And the end of the nice day... "Raise Your Hands" and this happend ... Or shortly a Gaastra harness line is broken.
Update: If you think, why i was so long underwater, then i was fine. Just my headcam come off and it take a few moments, when i catch it. I always have safety cord between cam and vest, so no problem, if it come off. 🤙

Super light wind !

Super light wind or 5-7 m/s. It means a big stuff and Formula board time. The sail is "Neil Pryde Racing EVO V 12.0". The fin is Z-Fins ZF-70. In this video you can see how much speed is needed when Formula board starts planing (approx. 15 km/h). Actually it can a bit earlyer planing, but it depends what weight rig is used. Here i have my biggest rig and this set weights over 10 kg.

    I went out on too small gear and couldn't get going. Then, as I was slow and the wind increased more than expected, I was heavily overpowered. Still, after the mark I drifted too low and need to make one tack, which cost me even more time. So I did finish it but somewhere in the back of the pack. Ok, we try again in 2025!

      It's good you had a coastguard pick up ! 🤙 One of my friend had same problem with Gaastra blackline boom. The tube is just broken from boom head. The problem is in material and design. Too soft alu alloy and it made of single piece. No double or triple tube in boom head curve area. In this video i use a uphaul line to fix it, but actually i had an extra 5 meter line piece in lifejacket pocket. just in case. By the way it's good to monitor the boom condition. If begin a season just measure a boom width in harnessline area. When next time you measure it and the distance is +5 cm or more grown, have to be careful, where to use it.

      Hi there ! Yes, this board can do easy pretty high speed, if you look my videoclip "One minute choppy ride." there can see, how easy it going over chop in speed 50+ km/h. In this videoclip is pretty flat water, so that's make possible going faster (60+). I use there for logging GT-31 logger. Later i bought a Sony AS-100V GPS Cam. The board have plenty of Vol. (125 L) to float safely in case of wind is dropping down, so safe to ride and no problem, if going off-shore.

      Hi ! Probably i just use it bit hard 😁. However i have a suggestion. It's good to monitor boom condition at least in begin and end of season. To do that measure the boom curve distance (between harness lines attachment points). There can clearly seen, is the boom bend at that point (distance is bigger, than previously measured) ? If so, then use it careful or don't use it, unless you sure, that boom head had no cracks. It's really hard to detect it by eye. You need to look it under boom grip and ideally if you have some access to ultrasound measure device can be sure it's ok to use.

If you not sure, is there any water inside, it 's possible to use a vacuum pump and bag. Put a board inside and leave it in suck an hour. If then you see a moisture in bag, then there is a water iside. If not, then board is just heavy, but tight. 🤟

      @@windsurfingfun4058 Thank you very much for the information, my Hyfly 330 board is all original, both the keel and the bowline (the keel that goes in the center). Even though it has a lot of volume, I think it's a very unstable board, the other day I tried to use it as a SUP (stand up paddling board) and it's extremely difficult due to the distribution of the greater volume being in the front part and it's considered a board narrow like the old ones, completely different from current boards. The Hifly 330 doesn't stop being a fun board for that, I just don't think I'll be able to glide as easily as on my formula board, but the fun is worth it. Many thanks for your information.

      Hi ! Yes, for SUP this board is not intended, but for windsurfing is good board for cruising and fun. The width in this board is 65 cm, so if compare to Formula board it's very narrow, however the 330 cm length is made it pretty comfortly to ride in choppy condition. It can reach easy to 40 km/h, but it needs a bit overpowered sail, because it's heavy board 🤙

I found your video very interesting, you can't imagine seeing it possible to sail with this board and such a big sail. My question is related to the keel, which measure are you using or are you using the original small keel with the bowline?

      Hi ! This board is really good all-round board, for long offshore cruising trip. Suitable for almost any type of sails. Normally i use there Neil Pryde V6 8.5 sail, but 10.0 can use wihout problem too. I have one formula and one slalom sail, both is 10.0 sq. In strong wind is no difference, but in light wind is slalom sail better, because boom can set lower than in formula sail (i ride with seat harness). I buyed this board without a fin and dagger. The mast track was also needed to repair. The original dagger is "Allgaier System O 62cm Dagger". The new dagger can buy in Exocet net shop and the price is 89€. The fin i use in this board is "Australian Custom Fins Company 330 mm." fin. Because board have a dagger, there no needed a bigger fin.

      Yes, it's good stuff in light wind. Very quickly and easy planing. But for beginners i not recommend it. In high speed it's sensitive and board nose is very fragile, if catapult and hit by mast. Mine board is ok, but i know some owners who damage it, and one more thing, this board is not foil compatible (for me it's not problem, im not foiling). Mostly i use Z-Fin 70 cm fin, but sometimes i ride with JP 56 cm slalom fin. It's faster, but it have lower lift, so need more speed to go sharp upwind.🤙

      Hallo Tom ! Thnxx and best New Year wishes to You ! Yeah for some windsurfers is "old school" (not to me), but this Fanatic from 1988 is surprised some new riders too, by it's allround capability. By ths board i ride from almost no wind up to 18 m/s without any loss of control. By new wide and short type board it's not possible to handle so high wind range, In very high wind it start tailwalking and very light wind is needed a dagger to maintain your upwind course. So then is needed two board to handle it, instead you need only one.

      @@windsurfingfun4058 fully agree and a modern board is going to be little if any fun in very light winds. Really good to have wind range in the kit, especially in these colder conditions where chopping and changing equipment really just adds to the delay and the cold factor. @@windsurfingfun4058 thanks for this, well worth knowing. I have a fanatic cat and a Hot Rabbit. Both have an aluminium inset track and at the moment I can use the pin-type base that also works with Mistral and Bic. This is good on the cat as I can then still use the sliding mast track to adjust trim whilst sailing. The Rabbit is a short board and there is the option to convert using the Chinook Nut which would then allow it to use any standard mast base- I have a few of these including on from Decathlon which is okay and works well considering it is a cheap brand. I was curious about your board as some of the older Fanatic use an external track on top of the board- there ware ways to keep them going but not always so easy. Anyway, I really like your board and I think the colour schemes from the old days look excellent and so much more appealing than much of the new gear, especially that 'carbon wash' effect stuff crap. And one thing is for sure, the new gear is very delicate and nowhere near as easy to repair- look at any 5 year old board second hand and usually it will have significant repair damage. Amazing that you can have a 35 year old board and keep it going. Great stuff!

    Shark was released in 1993 (I'v got the mega Ray of the same year). Regarding to the graphics, yours is 1994. Why did you put the mastfoot so forward ?? What is the wind speed ?

    • @windsurfingfun4058
      @windsurfingfun4058 2 года назад

      Hi Peter ! The reason, why mastfoot is in maximum forward, that 7.5 sail is biggest recommended sail size in that board. If i put there 8.5 or bigger sail, then CE (center of effort) comes too close to CLR (center of lateral resistance) . And one more reason there, if rigg is in forward position, then it keeps a board more flat in high speed, but it needs a stronger wind too also In that case board keeps nose down. But if mast is in center or back position, then board comes early planing, because rigg lifts more board nose up, but in high speed can board go in tailwalk 😉. The Mega Shark have a trimbox fin system, so the fin position in bigger sail is in maximum back position. In this video was weather tricky, as you see at the start there really so so windspeed, but after about 600 meters from shore it going rapidly up. Out in the sea was maximum some +17m/s and wind it getting up very quick from 6-7 m/s only in half of hour. That's why there's not yet any bigger waves are visible. The maximum speeds in ths day was a 68 km/h or pretty good for older slalomboard. Maximum speeds in that board are bit over 70 km/h, if only weather and wave condition are perfect 😉 If interested, i have a same and some more videos in Dailymotion too. www.dailymotion.com/mcm-t 🤙 😉

      Hi Alex ! Im not sure, how much is weight a similar Ultra series board, but my 291 Mega Shark weight is 8.8 kg with footstraps and Fanatic 330 cm G10 Glass Slalom fin. The Ultra RAT 1991 was a 280 cm and 105 liter board, so it's a bit different size and shape. Mega Shark is 291 cm. 59 cm width and 125 liter vol. so a bit bigger board. The Fanatic Falcon 293 Racing XL 129 liter vol. (1996) is maybe closest to my board and the weight of that board was without fin and straps 7.1 kg. (factory data). The construction all these boards was similar a Carbon Honeycomb inside.

      Yes, it's from same limited series board, that made for Neil Pryde team in 90's. The origin of that board is not clear, but i buyed it few years ago from Germany. The board is all original (incl. original fin and footstraps) and not restored, as you can see that neon text sticker is sun bleached ;-) Board itself in very good condition and easy to ride. If compare to same vol. new boards, it need a bit more sail (add 1 -2 sqm.) and ride position is similar to speed boards. In other words all power in front foot and avoid much pressure in back foot, otherwise it may spin out. The fin lenght in this board is 320 cm and by profile is slalom fin (better lift).

    То же есть Fanatic Lite Viper. Синяя, пустотелая. Какого года не знаю. Досталась с мусорки. Загерметизировал и убрал какую то нашлепку для крепления мачты. Есть стандартный погон под шарнир. Сначала учил новичков, вставляя огромный шверт-лопату от еще более древней доски. Потом сделал нормальный убирающийся шверт, взял парус 9,9 метров от формулы и получил веселый аппарат. Хожу, когда на формулу ветра не хватает. Такой мини-яхтинг, фитнес :). Удовольствие от чистого, не замутненного скольжения. Еще и с веслом можно ходить, как на SUP только ощущение что на бревне.

    • @windsurfingfun4058
      @windsurfingfun4058 3 года назад

      Yes, there was a pretty choppy and windy condition, but here is again oldschool board works perfect. Going like a train straight forward. In this condition doing a waterstart i go in footstraps, when im still in water or sometimes i put just backfoot only in strap. Frontfoot in that case is in board centerline, because then board is in level and when i power up a sail and get out of water, then board going straight and not turn in up or downwind. Doing this way it helps to prevent fly over board nose too, and you can accelerate planing much faster. I have biggest sails a 10.0 sq. just not needed any bigger sail by now. Actually i have two 10.0 sq sails, but both are for different purpose and board. One sail NS Warp 2004 is Formula sail and second is ART Ellipse Race sail. Main difference is in shape. Formula sail have a boom head place much higher, so i use there a longer harness lines, because i ride with seat harness. In Race sail can more relax and ride hours without being exhausted.

    • @windsurfingfun4058
      @windsurfingfun4058 3 года назад

      Hi Peter ! Yes, actually i always use straps, when i have enough speed to planing. In light, but gusty wind (non planing condition) i use only backstrap, while front feet is not in strap and i keep it in close board centerline. Doing that it helps to keep board in level and it going straight. And as you see in this videoclip in strong wind and waterstart im already in straps before im getting up from water.

      @@windsurfingfun4058 ok ! so the wind is quite high ; I use my old Viper into 10-13 knts of wind with a 7.3, and quite never use the straps (because of not enough speed) At 13-14, I swap the board for my 119 JP freeride that goes on the plane instantanely

      @@WindsurfingNelson Hi ! Actually im still mostly oldschool windsurfer, but of course it's good to try something more modern. I had a plan to try some Formula windsurf race, and that's why i buy this board. But since now is that travel problems between countrys, it's difficult to find a time for it, so hopefully next season i can take a part of some race. The company, where im working is in different country, but all my windsurf stuff is in Estonia. So, that's why i have to delay my Formula racing plans. However, my experience of the Formula board is fun and positive. Meanwhile the oldschool longboarding is still my favourite, with 300+ cm board can surf all day and offshore, without being exhausted. ;-) Some surfers was asking, why is needed a board long front part, if the board is planing, then it is not in water ? Well, actually in choppy sea long front part is working as schock absorber, and board is more in level. The downside of course is a little loss of speed, but no matter, if not in race ! :-)

      @Windsurfing Fun ! Thanks for your answer! Formula is certainly a very special niche and very physical for me. Although I am using a 9.4 quite often, both on fin and foil, I find the 11m sail is intimidating. I hope I find the fitness to try the fin again, even if it just to see the difference. I loved my first formula board because it was flying in so light wind. In those days that was quite frustrating for all the others, waiting for the wind to come while I was flying around on my F2 T-Rex. Never felt good enough for a race, though. (Here´s my last take: ruclips.net/video/W4Hd6WZ9SAo/видео.html) 👋😁
