Dad Strength vs Sekiro | Owl Father Boss Fight
Просмотров 27Месяц назад
What’s with FromSoft and their Secret Bosses being some of the most difficult bosses in the series? Owl Father is a must play boss in my opinion, I regret missing this in my initial play through, but to be fair the quest to unlock the boss is very obscure. I plan on achieving the bad ending next to face the remaining bosses and then possibly stream one quick play through to achieve the default ...

    The old dog's still got some tricks, eh. Tough fight this one, since it's essentially 3 phases with Emma. No surprise why this is the bad ending, not only do you kill the waifu but also the cool old dude, then go on a full Demon of Hatred rampage afterwards. The jump sweep punish can be a little hit and miss, that's why I've always preferred Leaping Kicks/High Monk, it starts off with a jump so you don't even have to press the jump initially, then comes down with a massive posture damage attack, so you don't need to press jump again (and potentially miss). You can also use Ichimonji one the way down with mid-air combat arts but then you still have to do the initial jump so I've always found Leaping Kicks/High Monk easier. You could also Mist Raven the sweep (again skipping the jump) and then do combat arts on the way down but then you're using emblems, looks flashy as hell though and would still be more reliable if those double jumps are not as consistent as you need them. Anyway, good use of the shield there by the end with Projected Force. 👌 You don't see it because of the way the shot is framed at the end cut scene but when Owl comes back he's actually holding Genichiro's head. So he was off executing him while you had your hands full with Kuro's guardians. He took that other mortal blade by force. You can find videos about it on youtube if you want to see those scenes from a different perspective, I think Zullie the Witch or Sekiro Dubi have a video on it. Well, that's all the bosses. Has your big 3 changed or will it remain the same?

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      I was wondering what was up with the counter slash timing, I’ll have to try out the mist raven. Especially since it and the sabimaru were my least used of the tools. Damn Owl really was taking care of business, I didn’t even consider how he came into possession of the second mortal blade. Rip Genichiro, I wonder why they decided not to show it considering how violent the game already is. As far as difficulty goes, it is my personal opinion that Both Isshins are tied for the 3rd spot, with Owl Father at #2 and the demon at #1 most difficult boss. I have to keep in mind that this was new game plus 3, so perhaps it bumped up the fight’s difficulty. As for my favourites it goes Emma and Isshin at #3, Owl Father at #2, and Isshin the Sword Saint at #1. I just wish that the game didn’t finish this early for those who made the bad decision…

  • @undefinedvariable8085
    @undefinedvariable8085 Месяц назад

    GG man! Glad to see you post this fight. You were a lot more aggressive by that last bout, pushing Owl back to the walls, which is pretty much the strategy; relentless aggression. You can get him caught in a loop that way for the most part and force some decent deflects to keep pressuring the posture. A lot of interesting things about this fight. First off, he was there because in the actual events that transpired he'd just stabbed you in the back after defeating Lady Butterfly. His thrusting attack is actually an ultimate version of a Shinobi Art (Shadowrush) called Shadowfall which you can obtain under the Mushin Arts tree. He can also mikiri counter that attack if you try it on him, which I learnt the hard way too and I think my reaction was very similar to yours. Whenever he swiped his sword through the firecrackers it was momentarily imbued with fire, which is similar to the ultimate Prosthetic Art you can attain called Living Force, except you can't do it with your own firecrackers strangely, only your Flamevent and Divine Abduction. By the way, that prosthetic originally belonged to the shinobi Orangutan, who is actually the sculptor. It was actually Isshin who severed his arm to prevent him going Shura. The Prosthetic Arts were all developed by the sculptor. Good fight though, that old bastard is intense. 26:25 A lot of folks would agree with that ranking. It's usually always those 3 in various orders either way.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      Keeping up the pressure on Owl is definitely the strategy you’re right about that, his shinobi tools succeeded in distracting me from his biggest weakness (amazing boss design) Knowing FromSoft the reverse mikiri was probably planned before they designed the counter in the first place. They wanted us to use it through the whole game just to be caught off guard and reminded who the master shinobi is. I’ll have to watch another video explaining why he stabbed us in the first place, I understand lady butterfly was on his side, but wolf could have been brought up to speed with Owl’s new plan. That’s just me though, I don’t understand the story nearly enough to have any answers on this. Oh I thought the tools were Owl’s that makes more sense considering that the tools are for the prosthetic arm which was passed down from the sculptor. I guess Owl knew Orangutan because they were both shinobi’s until Isshin cut his arm off. As for my ranking, the top 3 just stood out from the rest. Especially since they’re all difficult for different reasons. Out of these three, who would you say was the most difficult boss on your first go around?

    • @undefinedvariable8085
      @undefinedvariable8085 Месяц назад

      @@jakemanus Personally, it had to have been Owl. But I think that's because I fought him first out of the big 3. I think the gist of why Owl wanted Wolf dead was to get the Divine Heir's Dragons Blood, he knew Wolf would make that complicated. Wolf was just there to keep Owl close to the Divine Heir so that he could strike when the time was right, like during the Hirata attack. Which he had a hand in orchestrating with the Interior Ministry (hence the Loneshadows' presence) to make look like a common bandit attack. So Wolf would had to have been dealt with at some point to get him out of the picture, failing that, coerce him into obeying the Iron Code which, shocker, ultimately failed too.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      @undefinedvariable8085 That’s a great point, out of the big 3 I fought the Demon of Hatred first. Perhaps that isn’t a coincidence. I didn’t think of Owl simply using wolf to get within striking distance of the divine heir… Even he anticipated that wolf would become loyal to the divine heir and then like you said complicate his master plan. In the end he was right (depending on the players decision to obey the iron code or not) I’ll have to see what happens when we side with Owl instead…

  • @undefinedvariable8085
    @undefinedvariable8085 Месяц назад

    GG my dude! You're a Souls vet now, through and through. Sword Saint Isshin is a fantastic final boss precisely for the reasons you mentioned there at the end; it's the ultimate final test, putting everything you should've mastered throughout the playthrough to test, with subtle knowledge checks and a relentless intensity that doesn't let up (hesitation is defeat). That's what a good final boss for these kinds of games should be. That 2nd phase when he pulls out the sidearm and the spear of the general you see him defeat in the opening cinematic (which he later gifts to Gyuobu), followed by that lightning 3rd phase, chef's kiss. Between him and the 2nd Owl fight you missed out on, I can't decide which one I liked more. They're both on par as far as difficulty goes, although Isshin edges out a tad. So you managed to get the "Return" ending (post that giant snake execution as a short). That's the best ending you can get and does seem to suggest a sequel we never got to see (so probably the most canon of all the endings). They return to the "West' which is probably China, where the Divine Dragon originates from. The other endings are: - Shura (bad): follow the Iron Code and obey the Owl when he asks you to abandon Kuro. You fight 2 additional bosses here that you wouldn't in the standard playthrough, after this the playthrough is cut short and ends there. - Purification (good): this was the ending you would unlock if you fought Owl the 2nd time back in Hirata. - Immortal Severance (bad): the standard ending you would've gotten if you didn't complete the extra steps to get the "Return" ending. I've intentionally left out the fates of the characters from these endings but if you'd like to know any way I can give the summaries. Thanks for the playthrough man, I've enjoyed watching.

      I’m honoured… though I’m sure some members of the community might say I would need to play Demon Souls and Bloodbourne before accepting me as a vet. After having some time to think about it, I think Isshin is my favourite boss that fromsoft has crafted. It may be unfair to compare him to the other games because he pushes the player to master a more complex combat system rather than perfect roll timing, but it’s something to consider for sure. If the second Owl is only half as good as this fight I won’t be disappointed. I wonder what kind of new tricks he has in store for me at Hirata Estate. Once it’s done I’ll let you know what boss I prefer, I might even do an in depth ranking, though I know it’s not a unique idea. I figure that my first experience with the game may appeal to new players. I did manage to kill the snake thanks to you mentioning to use puppeteer for the kite. I’ll post the short as soon as I have the time to go back and find the footage. This game easily deserves a sequel, but I trust FromSoftware if they choose to make something different. I had no idea that the game has that many endings. Looks like I’ll have to get them all, especially if the bad ending has two new bosses. Those bosses must be really solid if the game ends there, arguably missing the best parts of the game. I’m happy with my decision to remain loyal to Kuro. Wait would that mean fighting Kuro?? Just a thought, I’d rather not spoil the other endings. Thank you for offering and thank you for your support throughout the play through. I’m not sure what game I’ll play after, I’ll have to take another look at my game library. I know Fallout has really resurfaced after the tv show, so Fallout is really tempting to play. I’m just nervous because I know the Elden Ring DLC is around the corner and it’s easily going to take priority over everything. I know you suggested hollow knight, but I just can’t get a copy of the game yet… Elden Ring’s DLC made sure of that. I digress this series has been a blast and I’m happy I still have some major bosses and endings to look forward to.

    Now that's the way to start a Demon of Hatred video haha! You know it's serious when the death count comes out. Had a few good laughs throughout, unlucky on those close calls, but hey, that's the Soulslike experience for you. Good fight man. You adapted well throughout. Especially considering this is practically a Dark Souls boss in a game that's been all about deflects and posture damage up until now. I was glad to see you figure out that grapple hook over the shockwave slam too. Most people leave Malcontent to the last phase and then pop a sugar or spiritfall to maximise the AR. I think you would've found more benefit from the shield if you held it up during some of those fireball scatter throw attacks. But hey, the Demon is dead and you done it man. GG! The Demon is one tough bastard, but he was no slouch in his human days either, that is before his solitary idol carving days.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      Haha I figured that the video could use a little kick to start off the longest fight so far in the let’s play. The Death counter was warranted as soon as I didn’t realize how long I was recording for, I’m glad it was entertaining and that the close calls ended up being something people can laugh at. This truly felt like a fight that I had to learn from the ground up, as there were no techniques from previous Sekiro bosses that could be attributed to the Demons fight. You could argue the Guardian Ape fight, however I just don’t think it’s that much of a game changer. While I was editing, I realized just how long it took me to realize that there were grappling hook opportunities (some I didn’t realize until the end) Wait Malcontent works for the third phase?? I could have sworn the demon was not affected. Regardless, playing defensive by strictly using the umbrella ended up being the difference maker, as I think malcontent was too expensive. Wait you mean to tell me that the Sculptor was the demon ?? I knew he was quite the shinobi in his prime, but how, why? … perhaps it’s time for a Vaati video

    • @undefinedvariable8085

    Interior Ministry's forces don't fuck around. Trick to that Shigekichi fight was using the Loaded Spear to pull off his big boy armour so that you could deal higher damage for speedier posture build up. 3:58 There's a ledge below you can reach if you jump and grab it, then you just skirt around. Eventually leads you to the other side of that door at 9:41. But there's nothing important you miss there from what I recall. If there's anything you still wanted from the merchant you can probably find it in the offering box back at the shrine by Hanbei. Demon time, huh. This guy is tough. And a lot people opt out of this fight. Patience and the right tools can make the difference. Good luck (and enjoy)! 25:19 Nice! Happens in other Souls games too. In the air for long enough and you trigger a fall death.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      Ah the spear trick will help in the next play through for sure. Speaking of which, if there’s no items that I missed with that ledge then perhaps it’s a way to skip the chained ogre fight earlier in the game. I’ll have to check out the offering box for some last minute upgrades. You aren’t kidding about the Demon being tough, though I’ll let the video today speak for itself 😂 I had no idea that this was present in the other games too, I suppose that’s a good thing since I lost my loot. Shichimens and Headless are kind of gimmicky, once you get how you're supposed to fight them there's a steep drop off from perplexingly frustrating to silly little side distractions. You'll know if a boss resets when their health bar disappears from the screen, too late now probably, but anyway (the more you know!). Were you intentionally using projected force off your umbrella there at the end of that Shichimen fight at the Fountainhead? Couldn't tell if it was intentional or just bearing through the frustration because your confetti was out too but you weren't rebuffing 😅 The Lilac Umbrella can block those terror balls it just looked like it didn't work in that particular situation because your parry frames ended just as you got hit. That umbrella will also stay up if you hold it, just like a shield. So you can practically just walk over to the Shichimen with that up and he won't be able to do shit, beams, balls and all. You can also actually just deflect the beam with your buffed sword, seems unintuitive but after the initial deflect, the rest of the beam has no effect on you while in your deflect animation recovery frames. Then there's the anti-air deathblow, which you almost nailed at the Abandoned Dungeon, trivialises the fight (need to have your sword divine confetti buffed though, although not sure actually if the Fountainhead Shichimen Warrior jumps at all). And Lapis Lazuli is a worthwhile price, a fully upgraded prosthetic can be quite potent (pity it comes a little too late in the playthrough though). That Malcontent finger ring upgrade also works on the Shichimen, can't remember exactly how, but I think it stuns them for a time. Malcontent is also very effective on demons, remember that. As for the Shichmen, well none of this matters now because your done with them 🎊 Ashina has been cleansed! Headless you just got to keep smashing until that black mist AoE dispels and then it's the standard deflect and posture affair until they buff again, rinse and repeat. Feel your pain though, no need to suffer through them, unless you're a sweet tooth or a completionist. Found your way over to noble fish feeder I see, nice. Now that you're on feeding terms with the Great Carp talk to the pot nobles at Hirata Estate and the Fountainhead Palace (you know there's one there too right?), exhaust their dialogue and make sure you've been a good patron with your scales. That Sakura Bull actually has a stupid silly cheese, throw out a firecracker at the right time and it freaks out and just charges into the wall knocking itself over and giving you an easy deathblow. It looked like he was just about to do that actually when you threw out your first firecracker but then your second might've cancelled him out of it. For some reason it doesn't work where you ended up fighting him in that alcove, has to be in that passage area leading out.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      I also noticed I wasn’t holding the umbrella out I was just tapping the button, perhaps that was the difference maker. I wish I could take the credit for using projected force, but that was just me panicking and not knowing what I should do… it worked out I suppose. The tips to deal with these enemies will certainly make a huge difference for future encounters. As I’m reading your comment I realized you also noticed that I wasn’t holding the umbrella out haha I didn’t figure this out for a few more videos… I didn’t know malcontent works on sichimen warriors, as I didn’t take them for beasts. Though I did find it useful for a particular boss that is coming up for sure. I did end up receiving a bait to give to the fish, however nothing happened after I gave it to the fish, so I think I cut that part out. Aw no I wish I figured out how to cheese the bull that would have been both hilarious and rewarding after the first encounter before the castle.

    Yo don't you just love the smell of Ashina burning in the evening. There are some parts of the outskirts you can reach (via a certain kite). It's the forces that foot soldier asked you to reinforce (FromSoft's way of say "hey go look there"). But I think you might already have realised that by now. Forgot about that thing that happens in the guardian ape's burrow. Good thing you were so thorough and double checked your idols haha. Speaking of, forgot to ask in the last video but did you find that Sakura Bull in the Fountainhead Palace? I know you're not a big fan but if you are thinking about killing all bosses there are Headless in several locations that would be happy to feel you; one in Ashina Outskirts before the shinobi door shortcut that takes you back to Senpou Temple's Demon Bell, one in the Hidden Forest you already know about, two in the depths of the Fountainhead Palace you also know about, and one other in Ashina Sunken Valley in a cave you access via a brief swim through a pool by a burial mound where phantom samurai spawn. And while we're on the topic of ghouls, there's the Shichimen Warrior in Fountainhead Palace you know of and another in the Abandoned Dungeon. Did you ever pay that physician in the Abandoned Dungeon another visit? You remember the weirdo with the bloody scrubs. And then if you haven't already pay your homeboy Hanbei back at the shrine a visit and do him a big solid. There's also a thing about a giant carp, some woman's father nobleman, precious bait and some pot nobles but that just all fishy business. I think that's the final checklist. You've got what is arguably the best (and one of the most difficult) FromSoft bosses coming up and one of the most contentious in the community (if you go look for him).

It also works really well on those Sichiman Warriors to when they go for hang time. Did you get that bell from Emma that takes you back to an earlier time at Hirata Estate by any chance? It's like Hirata 2.0. And did you ever ride that kite back in Senpou Temple? You might need to pull a few (puppet) strings to make it happen. Into the final streatch!

Why didn’t I think of using the puppet ninjitsu for the kite that makes so much sense. I’ll have to go back and do that before doing anything else. @@jakemanus Yea, I think once you defeat the Divine Dragon it's too late for Hirata 2.0. You unlock a secret alternative ending that way (the "good" canon ending I think) and get to fight a much more challenging and improved version of the Owl. Still one of the best boss fights I've ever had in a FromSoft game. Look back on it often fondly because it was the first time, after nth amount of attempts, I became so precise and efficient at what I was doing that I felt like the boss bullying old Owl. And that's when it really hit home for me just how optimised the combat had to be. What other game makes you feel that way? I don't mean in an OP way, that's every rpg, I mean in a pure skill expressive way. Provided you do everything right and find the right flow of course but that's the dance. It was like Goku going super saiyan against Frieza. Anyway, I digress. Go back to that kite in Senpou if you can. There's a score you can settle with an old denizen of the valley. For the cinematics if nothing else.

      @@undefinedvariable8085 Shoot I was trying to defeat all bosses this play through. I suppose I could make a stream of playing up to that point after I finish the game. If the boss is as rewarding to learn as you say, well then it will certainly be worth it. Now that you mention it, I don’t know if I have played a game that has been this challenging while maintaining a fair and rewarding gameplay loop. Every time I defeat a boss it is a milestone confirming my progress and mastery of the combat, rather than just being a high enough level. Sekiro might be that game for me, though I can’t say that every boss is that way… a certain boss in the future was more of a relief that it was over than anything. If I had to pick a (non FromSoftware) game that has rewarded my skills in a similar fashion it would be Batman Arkham City. The difficulty may not be on the same level as Sekiro, however the combat has an in depth skill tree that is extremely rewarding to learn. Bosses can be dealt with in under a minute if you know what you’re doing, not to mention the stealth and melee combat interactions that can be completed even quicker. I’ll have to give the question more thought, but as for action rpgs that’s the closest game from my experience

    Fountainhead Palace is a beautiful place, glad I could enjoy it again in HD 😌 Spent a lot of time there farming for the last few skills. Perfected a farm run from the bridge idol, where you ended this video, all the way around to the other end where you drop down after the Corrupted Monk. Just murdering everything along the way, with a lot of stealthy death blows and shuikens. With the Ceremonial Tanto I could eke out enough emblems to make it efficient. You got the good old Fountainhead welcome haha. I was thinking there was no way you were going to get that Unseen Aid, but then Fortune smiled on you. GG on the Corrupted Monk, 2nd attempt, you should be proud with that. You could actually skip her entire 2nd phase by grappling to the branch she respawns below to get a free deathblow. You've got the Dragon's Tally Board now so pay all the merchants another visit. By the way, to get a death blow from around a corner while hugging the wall you need to be peaking around. You can chuck out a ceramic shard at an enemy while doing this to lure them to you. Probably too late for that titbit though but the more you know! Looking forward to the rest of the palace tour.

Wait what branch? I was up on branches trying to evade the shadow slashes, but you’re telling me I could have accidentally skipped phase 2. Probably how someone found the skip in the first place. The merchants will certainly be payed another visit, I’ll try and get as many prostethic upgrades as possible. The ceramic shard trick makes sense… I was out here trying to get the corner take down from the Arkham games. Aaah Mibu Breathing! Go back now to Hirata Estate and every other location with a body of water deeper than a puddle and do some exploring. There's some good swimming to be had right by the village. 5 stars. Water tastes like carp's piss but nice and warm. This boss is the health bar to posture bar dynamic on full display. It's posture recovers quickly at high hp but as soon as you get it down by even a third the recovery rate starts to fall off drastically, at that point deflects become a viable strat again. The snap seeds are the gimmick item that just helps you get there immediately, you can snap her with 3 seeds for a chunk of hp a piece. But this only works because she's an apparition type enemy. You done well though, better than I remember doing on my first double digit attempts. The shuriken was always the default in my playthrough and I remember the Chasing Slice being quite useful to close the gap on targets quite rapidly (got some good range too). That 1-2 combo was enough to kill a lot of weaker enemies outright. The next skill is Mid-Air Prosthetics, also useful with the shuriken, especially when grappling in on enemies, but it's useful for other tools as well like the Loaded Axe since it comes out much faster in air than on ground. More spirit emblems never hurt either. But you might find better use for your emblems from other skill trees like the Ashina and Shinobi arts (all the passive buffs are kind of a no brainer, set and forget sort of thing).

Double digits wow I think I would have blown a gasket, this boss made me rage really quick and perhaps a little too much in my opinion. Chasing slice… I’ll give it a shot, as closing the gap could be the difference between a big enemy regaining there posture… though I am noticing spirit emblems can run out if used to sparingly so I’ll have try and get both.

    The Black Lotus is one of the rarest and most sought after cards in MTG (no longer in print I think), banned in tournaments as well for being too OP if I'm not mistaken. Don't play the game myself but had a friend group that was pretty big on it back in the day. Fucking nerds. GG on that ape. I think you got your revenge pretty solid there. Did you manage to backtrack and get those items in that poison swamp cave that you couldn't get to before? Even if you did, you might want to go back through that area again. By the way, did you speed run the Hidden Forest?😂 A few things you might've missed: a merchant just outside of Mibu Village, treasure carp scale lying around that general vicinity too, the other half of the village across the lake (short swim, if you don't mind getting wet), prayer bead on the 2nd floor of that building you found ASMR gulp guy in. You're going to find the next boss fight super frustrating but just keep pressuring and eventually you'll get the posture break. Terror baby! That's how FromSoft tells you about it; when it surprises you with it. It's Sekiro's very own curse or death blight, an old favourite trick of From's. You done well to bust open that first phase with the Firecracker. Because it's a beast type Flamevent is also helpful, it has a chance to stun, just like the firecracker, but it also inflicts burn status which helps tick down the HP. The 1st phase is all about ticking down that HP to get that posture bar up faster. But the 2nd is all about the deflects, the posture bar builds up much quicker this way. And because he's got a sword it actually becomes easier than phase 1's wild beast swings, even if it is a little unconventional at first. Firecracker won't work here anymore since he's no longer a beast type. But you know what will? That Loaded Spear of yours. All I'll say is; look out for the big overhead downward swing of the sword and be sure to deflect it for a big stun. It's easy to see coming, he holds it above for a bit before bringing it down. When you get the deflect off and he's on the ground for a bit, use the spear on the bloody stump for massive posture damage. Make sure you have enough emblems. Oh and that umbrella is a good sound barrier too, whip it out next time you find yourself in the middle of a terror scream. This is one of those fights that can be made so much easier with the right tools. By the way, how the hell did you figure out that puppet ninjitsu diversion trick on the monkey in cave? I'm impressed. Those items you saw looking back from atop that cliff, you were on the right track to get them. Just missed a grapple point to the left near the entrance of that cave coming in (where the Snake Eyes mini boss was standing outside of). Precious item ahead, you'll want to go back for it. I see you're a man of culture who appreciates a good ichimonji too, one of the best posture damaging skills you can get. Do you have the "Mid-Air Combat Arts" in the "Shinobi Arts" skill tree? You can jump and ichimonji while still in the air with this and turn perilous sweep attacks into massive posture damaging opportunities.

      Haha I almost forgot FromSoftware never explained cursed or death blight… Your advice regarding the second phase of the boss is priceless… the downward attack was a must deflect. I’m not sure why I was trying to dodge it, maybe because the first phase? (Idek myself) I knew I was going to surprise at least one person with that haha, but I assure you with the amount of trial and error that actually took place… it was not very impressive. I couldn’t even keep it in the video because it wasn’t even funny it was just sad, plus being sick just made it more depressing. I tried all my tools and both ninjutsu’s once I found the monkey. The blood smoke one was the one I thought would work (of course it didn’t) That item that you said I was on the right track of… I tried everything in the wrong room… even trying to use the puppet ninjutsu to get them to shoot down the item. 30 mins later I moved on haha. Ichimonji is just really fun to say… saying it in the air, well now you got my attention.

    So you've found the Sabimaru, that's actually supposed to be quite effective against snake eyes. Although the wind up is a bit long initially the combos are quite fast and aggressive and can stun lock. That perilous grab attack she was doing to hook you in and blast you, I think you can just dodge into it (if I recall) and start attacking. I see you've met Blackhat Badger too since you have that umbrella. He sells that anti-air deathblow technique. Definitely worth picking up. Those sunken valley clansman are a good farm for yellow gun powder, which is an uncommon upgrade mat you'll need for your prosthetic tools. By the way, you only get back health if the deathblow is stealthy. Long Arm Centipede fight here is mostly a fight against the camera. Did you explore those depths you saw below just after the idol and before encountering the mini-boss? A special something down there. That Divine Abduction is probably the weirdest and most circumstantial tool you'll get. Monks really love it. Useful for farming though. Next time you drop in on that committee meeting of monkeys pop a firecracker then bloodsmoke ninjitsu one and let the chaos ensue. 20:18 Yea, he is the skill-check. The "final exam" for term 1. This is why I think Sekiro bosses are some of the best in the FromSoft Soulslike lineup, it's challenging but never feels unfair. Having a narrow scope of finely tuned and optimised combat mechanics with few variables (unlike a wide range of build variety) makes this possible. This is how you get moments like: "show me your thrust counter", "show me your sweep counter", "show me how good you've gotten at deflection". It's constantly testing you. Even in the second phase, the plunge attack into perilous thrust changes to a plunge attack into perilous sweep. Everything is well telegraphed and when you screw up you know exactly why and how you should deal with it next time. It's not a mystery and you're never asking yourself "do I need to respec just to deal with an unbalanced mechanic that feels cheap or gimmicky". That's the issue I have with waterfowl, nothing preps the player to deal with it in a reasonable and sensible way throughout the entire 50+, 70+ 100(?)+ hour play through. Even turtling behind your shield feels like a punishment because she still heals (even on a 100% physical dmg absorption shield). And even once you learn how to dodge the attack you can still be screwed if she starts up while you're still stuck in recovery frames of an attack (that you started when she wasn't attacking, also known as an "opening" (dear FromSoft)) because you don't have enough time to react. I rant, but I must've helped 1000s of people by now as a co-op summon for this fight and 9 out of 10 of them end in that one move alone. Crazy. Any way, back to Sekiro. As for how all the combat arts and prosthetic tools find their place in all of this, they're just the flavour of sauce (you choose) on a steak that is already grilled to medium-rare perfection. A good steak is even better with a good sauce, too many folks try and gum it down dry and they're missing out honestly.

      I agree completely, Genichiro Ashina is testing everything the player should know from encountering previous enemies and bosses. Extremely balanced and fair, to make your point further the game even explains how to counter the lightning in phase 3 prior to the fight. Sekiro is honestly a different game and in my opinion isn’t a “Souls Game” that’s not a bad thing though, it has its own identity and I can’t fault it or the other games for not following previous principles the players have learned from other games. This does go both ways and while I appreciate where your coming from with Waterfowl Dance, I think FromSoftware had a difficult time balancing her as the Endgame option Boss like Nameless King, however this was even more difficult to do because summons change the formula. I’m not saying Summons are a bad thing, it just makes the game very difficult to balance. I love build variety and it’s one of the reasons Elden Ring is in my top 5 favourite games, but like you said Sekiro is able to focus on one class and make it the most balanced combat ever while still making it challenging. That was a long rant haha you’re not the only one. Once I’m done the first two reviews I’m working on I’ll be able to get it all out…

      @@jakemanus So here's why I personally consider Sekiro a soulslike. It's my own personal metric for assessing a soulslike. Subjectively, there are 3 fundamental design aspects of a soulslike broadly speaking; combat mechanics, environmental design, and the levelling system. Crucial elements to the combat mechanics are high commitment actions, opportunity trade-offs (e.g. speed over power, attack or evade or defend, etc.), punishable/vulnerable (health) recoveries, and stamina management. Sekiro posture mechanic is a stand in for stamina, functionally very different but a good example of how fundamentals of the soulslike formula can be iterated on and adapted in the right way. Characteristic level design features are hazardous environmental elements (i.e. traps, lots of booby traps) and ambushes, secrets and discovery, and some sort of sequential progression (usually linear) identified by checkpoint mechanics like bonfires, which also tend to reset the environment/world state. Key aspects of the levelling system should include some sort of currency, risk of losing that currency (typically on death after failing to retrieve it), and attributes or characteristics to improve (i.e. level up) which this currency gives you purchasing power to do. This is to say nothing of build varieties. That doesn't need to be an essential part of a soulslike although I do think it completes it. Although this can be accomplished to some degree with some loadout optionality through things like prosthetics, or charms in the case of another soulsike, Hollow Knight. Still Hollow Knight would be considered primarily a metroidvania rather than soulslike despite it sharing a lot of the above characteristics. I think if a game has most or all of these characteristics if could be considered a soulslike. Many games have one or a few and are still considered soulslike. But hey, this terms is thrown around like confetti for hype and click bait so gotta take it with a grain of soult ; )

      @@jakemanus Honestly, I think most of the imbalance with ER comes from the weapon skills and AoWs. You see this a lot in pvp. But yea, you could tell From had some difficulties balancing the game just by the sheer scope of it. Way too much to possibly account for. In their previous titles it was enough to programmatically punch some numbers into a multiplier and just scale everything up or down but that doesn't port over well to a game of the sheer scope and size of ER. I was wondering how they were going to deal with this in the DLC without requiring people to level up even more and further push out online multiplayer meta levels. And what do you know, they've decided to go with the same approach they've used here in Sekrio, where defeating a boss increases your overall attack power. Interesting to see mechanics first implemented in Sekiro now find their way into the quintessential representation of a soulslike but I'm not sure how well it'll work. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Also not sure if they'll some how deal with damage absorption in same way implementing something similar to prayer beads. ER summons were a great addition to the game though. From could still balance those sufficiently with good ol' scaling. Even dumbing down the AI (specifically for the mimic tear) which one of the early patches actually rolled out. Personally I would've preferred a smarter but weaker AI summon. But then again I'm sure the majority of players wouldn't prefer their mimics being instantly deleted because they were true comboed into oblivion by the waterfowl.

      I could make a whole video breaking down what you just said, but I can honestly sum it up with a cliche… When you put it like that, I agree. Sekiro is more similar to Dark Souls than it is different, maybe it was extreme for me to say a completely different game. The level design is a mix of DS1 and 3 and the risk to reward system a different adaptation of the traditional souls experience. Now that you mention the benefits of Sekiro’s approach to precise and fair combat, I’m curious to see what fromsoft could do by focusing on each unique build for their own respective game. I do believe scaling is the answer to the problem, even though I know some players will be turned away due to the lack of broken builds” Before I “Got Good” I preferred broken builds to stay in pve and balance pvp differently. Another way is using the Mist Raven tool that you already have, just activate it on ground without pressing any of the directional buttons, you'll be launched directly into the air above with your blade charged, ready to send back to the target. You can expand it to kill the little guys on the roof and the monkeys down below cliffside as well.

    Those poleblade monks are some of the toughest enemies you'll come across, they're no joke. Easiest way to dispatch them is with the aerial deathblow skill when they launch themselves into the air for that perilous attack. I've read the flamevent works pretty well on them too inflicting burn status easily and preventing their quick posture recovery. Otherwise the shuriken as you've used it, drops them out of the air and can interrupt most of their attack wind ups. Yea, Armoured Warrior is pretty gimmicky but you figured it out on the first deathblow, it's usually a head scratcher for most at first until they realise the environment around them is destructible.

    • @jakemanus
      @jakemanus Месяц назад

      Yeah the pole blade monks really caught me off guard, the shurikens seemed to work most of the time which was very helpful. I’ll have to get that skill, I have a feeling it will be invaluable in the future. The Armoured Warrior was a good boss in my opinion, another clue I forgot to mention was that he did not have a death blow counter at the top left of the screen. I don’t think I noticed this until the first death blow, but it’s worth mentioning.

The snapseeds are super rare by the way, and you don't get refills on every retry as far as I recall. You're supposed to use them when she summons in those ghostly apparitions that attack you. The prosthetic that she's weak to was the shurikens, you smack her off her floating strings for major posture damage. You've got the sakura droplet now so extra revive on deck. Looks like you're ready for Senpou Temple.

It really gives a great outside look on how relatable, and how easy it is to connect with such a great character, especially when watching your reaction to his passing and seeing how emotional and authentic it was. Ayyeeee, thank you for your support throughout the series! This has easily been one of the best experiences that I’ve had with a video game. And my best experience so far as a newer RUclipsr. Arthur Morgan’s story is tragic and yet so rewarding. The developers certainly used magic to get the player to care about him, despite all the horrible acts he has committed at the beginning of the game and even before then. After spending as much time as we did in this world and alongside Arthur in his path of redemption, we truly believe that Arthur is an honourable man. I don’t want to say too much, as I want to review this game after the Epilogue, but just know that this is already one of my favourite games of all time. Just like you said, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an experience. And I will always recommend it to people who haven’t played it for themselves.

    Ey Hirata Estate! You pick up so many important early game tools here. Flamevent to help you with the ogre, fire gourd to help you with the bull, loaded axe to help you with shields (and those annoying little fiends with the shield hats you find just after Gyoubo). Did you find that loaded axe by the way? I didn't see you pick it up. I see you have the firecracker now. If you ever feeling pressured and need to get a mob off your back just toss it out. Whatever's chasing you will flinch momentarily giving you room to reset. In terms of intended game progression players should complete at least the first half of Hirata before progressing past the ogre (you find one of the first spear ashigaru right by the ogre too, just when you should be familiar with the mikiri counter). You're entering the estate proper so it's about to get interesting. Also, find that pagota that looter merchant was telling you about.

    Ah, the Seven Spears and Lone Shadows. These guys are no joke. A real skill check at this point, pulling out all the stops. I remember raging and struggling with spear guy there for a time. Fun fight once you have it down though. Apparently you can time those mikiri counters by looking at the glint that appears on the opponent's weapon just before the thrust. When you see it, that's when you know you should counter. Although I'd always found it more intuitive to rely on instinctual timing so can't vouch for this one. By the way, you can also get a deathblow on that ninja if you take the less conventional route into the reservoir. There are some latent skills that'll help with building posture quicker after deflects and the like if I recall, they're passive abilities so definitely things you want to pick up. You were doing all the right things otherwise, just keep attacking to keep any posture built from reducing between deflects and counters.

    @undefinedvariable8085 2 месяца назад

    Ey! Good job on the commentary, I think it covered everything adequately enough. You must've bumped the mic in the right way again after your break this time haha The bull boss is tough. Everything up to then has been conditioning you to deal with humanoid enemies then From throws this raging abomination at you. I believe it was actually nerfed in a patch shortly after launch to increase its posture damage build up. As you guessed, there is actually a shinobi tool that temporarily stuns it (you can get that from a merchant hidden somewhere outside Ashina Castle's wall, keep an eye out for the crows) and another item that reduces the fire/burn build up you get when deflecting its fiery charges (this item you get from a completely different area you've had access to for a bit now). But you managed just fine without them. It really comes down to deflecting enough of his charges, to build up the posture damage enough, until he gets into a rage and charges into a wall, which then knocks him down allowing you to swoop in for the deathblow. This is the quickest way but not the simplest as timing the precise perfect parries on those charges is easier said than done. So I think most people just end up going the endurance route and breaking the posture by chipping away enough health. Looks like you have those samurai general bosses down to a T now. You took that guy out first try, you could get a sneaky deathblow on him from the castle above as well, but you didn't need it after all. By the way, have you taken a look at your shinobi skills? A lot of latent skills that can start being really effective and essential in the areas you're about to traverse moving forward. And something to put all those exp points towards you've been gathering. There's multiple routes you can go now, so you have some choices. Explore well there's a lot to uncover and discover that will reward you well for the challenges to come.

I’m glad they nerfed this boss in particular because I’ve searched every level I’ve completed to the best of my ability and did not find any more tools. I only found pellets and other consumables. I’ll check all the merchant shops again just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I did pick up some skills with the mikiri counter and the slash attack that can hit multiple enemies, but that’s all I could afford with my xp. Man, how's that voice acting for Gyoubu? Guy probably couldn't speak for a week after recording that. So used to hearing the Japanese dubbing for Gyoubu. If I recall right your 2nd revive circle fills up with deathblows. so if you ever need to go in with max revives do a few deathblow runs on the rabble around. Another interesting titbit, the posture bar fills up faster when an opponent's health is lower, but this is not really relevant in most cases since perfect parrying is usually all it takes to max out that posture bar as quick as possible. But this is not always the case, there are certain bosses you'll eventually encounter whose posture bar doesn't seem to break, that's when you focus on health first.
