    Yes! Sourdough is so charming and inventive, badly underrated since everyone seems to only talk about Mr. Prenumbra. I am definetly hoping to get time to read moonbound this year as well, but I will look forward to seeing what you think of it, as I haven't seen anyone read it yet. I loved Steve Cavanaugh's Thirteen, he definitely does creative twisty unexpected thrills very well.

    It's a shame that the novelisation of "All Good Things" wasn't a much longer novel: a real missed opportunity to really flesh out the characters in the two alternative timelines of the two-parter. "The Ophiuchi Hotline" (off-e-YOO-ki) by John Varley was a real page-turner for me; following the many adventures of Lilo-Alexandr-Calypso's many clones. After I'd read the Gaean trilogy and a couple of short story collections, I was determined to track down a copy (before online booksellers was a thing) It was well worth the long wait. I now have everything Varley ever published - I don't think he's written anything since "Irontown Blues" (2018). "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" was the first book that I bought back in 1978. (Another page-turner; one that I mostly read in one sitting) It was originally conceived as a low budget sequel to the first movie...before that became a blockbuster.

      @TheBookclectic 27 дней назад

      I wonder what I'll think of All Good Things. It doesn't sound like you were all that impressed lol. I'm hoping I'll like that John Varley book. I haven't read too much by him. And yes I knew that about Splinter Of The Mind's Eye. It's part of why I'm excited to read it! I can't imagine it without Han Solo though!

    • @andrewhelm2813
      @andrewhelm2813 27 дней назад

      @@TheBookclecticActually, I was suitably impressed by the novelisation of "All Good Things" it was a good read...it even included some dialogue that ended being cut from the aired episodes, and additional scenes that I'm not sure were from the actual teleplay or the work of Michael-Jan Friedman himself. I remember at the time, I was a little disappointed that Han Solo wasn't present in Splinter of the Mind's Eye - but was soon drawn into the narrative anyway. 😀 The three subsequent novels, written by Brian Daley starting with "Han Solo at Star's End" more than made up for his absence.

      Oh ok great! I'm glad you liked All Good Things! I'm looking forward to reading at some point. I tend to like the Star Trek novelizations. And I took a look at the books that follow this is in the Lengend series and they do look like they might be good. My son grew up reading them, and they have his stamp of approval, so if I like this one I think I'll more. 🙈 I'll be cheating on Star Trek!

  • @BryanM.R.-wt9eb
    @BryanM.R.-wt9eb Месяц назад

    I'll have to check out the Patrick Stewart book. Much as I loved Next Generation while growing up, I was also a huge Arthurian legend nerd, so his relatively small role in "Excalibur" loomed large in my mind as well. 😁 Yeah, the objectification business. I don't know about that particular author, but as much as I love the Original Series, I concede that its treatment of women is far from enlightened. Although I've gotta say it's downright hilarious some of the unlikely ways they'll have Uhura contorted at her station to show off those legs. 😂 That being said, I do think people sometimes look too hard to be offended. For example, I was reading that some Original Series reruns eliminate that scene in City on the Edge of Forever where Kirk tries to explain Spock's appearance by saying he's a Chinese man whose ears were mangled when he got his head caught in a "mechanical rice picker" as a child. I mean c'mon, in context, it's a comedic scene where Kirk is inventing a ridiculous lie on the spot and realizes how ridiculous it sounds even as he's saying it. 😂 It's hardly the stuff of real malice, but I don't know; maybe I'm just obnoxious and privileged or something. 🙄

    • @TheBookclectic
      @TheBookclectic Месяц назад

      • I was also into Authorian stories as a kid. I saw Excalibur when I was in 1st grade with my dad! I totally forgot he was in it!! • I'm not at all sensitive about any type of social prejudice in older books. I place everything I read into the context of the time in which it was written, but I don't want to see those things in anything being published these days. People definitely know better now. Even so, it wouldn't normally bother me more than an eye roll, but in the case of those two books, it was out of place and read as creepy. I couldn't find the words to properly explain why. • Uhura's legs: I have laughed more than once during TOS episodes at the blatant display of female bodies. That show is so old now, that most of it is just funny to see in the midst of a serious plot!

  • @andrewhelm2813
    @andrewhelm2813 Месяц назад

    For me, Star Trek novels are my year-long comfort reads, although I have to say that I haven't read any of the books mentioned...my cut-off point was 2011 - maybe it's just as well; it sounds like these new authors don't know how to write Star Trek properly or have an understanding of its characters.

    • @TheBookclectic
      @TheBookclectic Месяц назад

      For me the issue has been only been with these really newer ones that come out in trade paperback only. A lot of the really old ones are out of character, but they are charming and fun. When new ones fail in this way, it seems to me that it's because they are taking themselves too seriously. There is no fun or life in them. But I also haven't read alot of these really new ones, so I don't actually know if that's going to be a blanket issue.

    Hope you have better luck with it than I did. Hypothetically, I should have liked it better than I did, but at the time, several of the characters kind of annoyed me, and when a certain plot development made me realize that Robinson would likely be including many of them throughout the entire trilogy, I noped out. I don't think it's a "hard" DNF though. I'd like to give it another chance in better circumstances.

    Yes, McCoy had a daughter. In the story outline for a third season TOS episode: "Joanna"; she was the doctor's only child, and was mentioned in *Star Trek Writer's and Director's Guide* - she was said to be a nursing student back on Earth, who only received an occasional letter from her father to remind her of his existence. For some unfathomable reason she was written out of the episode's final script: "The Way to Eden".

    Great video. Thanks for catching us up...from last year's BookTrek. I've read a number of these books, too. I loved the Prey trilogy...and I ALSO hadn't read Khaless yet, either. I now have it, and will be reading it in the near future. A few years ago I read the first book in the 50 Years of Star Trek. Had the same feelings that you did about the struggles between the actors on set. It left a bad taste in my mouth, so never picked up the second twenty-five years. Because you enjoyed it so much...I will be picking it up, soon. Thank you. Have you ever read I am Not Spock by Leonard Nimoy and then the sequel I am Spock? If you haven't, it is a time capsule moment in his life, and how he felt about his career and not being pigeon holed, as an actor, then later embracing it. Really feel they are must reads for Star Trek fans. Thanks, again...will be back for more of your videos.

      I started Kahless, and it was fine, but I set it aside in favor of a few other things. I'll finish it soon though! And The Next 25 years is MUCH better than that first. I'm certain you will enjoy it! I have not read I Am Not Spok, but I'm sure I'll get to it soon. I've been making may way through all the memoirs. Thank you for watching my videos, and I'm glad find another BookTrekker!

    Oh, this is amazing. I am an avid fan of Star Trek, and for over a year, I've been reading TOS novels (which was my entry into Trek...with syndication. I was born in 1966, and when syndication became a thing, we watched Star Trek: TOS every weekday at dinnertime. I owned all 79 VHS tapes of the series, and watched them into my adulthood. SO, hearing about #BookTrek2024 is amazing. I've read a number of the books you held up in this video. Really enjoy the TOS era books, my first love. Without knowing about this readathon, I decided to start reading the Trek Lit Reading Flowchart on the first of June (coincidence? ), and started with TNG. It is now the end of June and I have read 17 novels in June (so far, it being June 28th...might be able to read one more). 1) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Death in WInter by Michael Jan Friedman 2) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Resisteance by J.M. Dillard (aka: Jeanne Kalfridis) 3) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Q & A by Keith R.A. DeCandido 4) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Before Dishonor by Peter David 5) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Greater Than the Sum by Christopher L. Bennett 6) Star Trek: Titan - Post-Nemesis: Taking Wing by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels 7) Star Trek: Titan - Post-Nemesis: The Red King by Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin 8) Star Trek: TNG - Post-Nemesis: Articles of the Federation by Keith R.A. DeCandido 9) Star Trek: Titan - Post-Nemesis: Orion's Hounds by Christopher L. Bennett 10) Star Trek: Titan - Post-Nemesis: Sword of Damocles by Geoffrey Thorne 11) Star Trek: Destiny - Post-Nemesis: Gods of Night by David Mack 12) Star Trek: Destiny - Post-Nemesis: Mere Mortals by David Mack 13) Star Trek: Destiny - Post-Nemesis: Lost Souls by David Mack 14) Star Trek: Voyager - Post-Nemesis: Full Circle by Kirsten Beyer 15) Star Trek: Voyager - Post-Nemesis: Unworthy by Kirsten Beyer 16) Star Trek: Voyager - Post-Nemesis: Children of the Storm by Kirsten Beyer 17) Star Trek: Voyager - Post-Nemesis: The Eternal Tide by Kirsten Beyer SO...as you can see...I've been having fun in the Summer...with #BookTrek2024, not even knowing it existed. Thank you for this video. I will now be looking forward to your videos, and checking out the other content creators. Thanks for doing this. It is now going to be my destination for MORE Trek reading each Summer. Talk to you, later.

    "The Fifty-Year Mission" sounds like a good read - I do have "Captain's Log: The Complete Voyages", and its two TNG supplemental guidebooks written by the same authors - I haven't read those in years, maybe it's time to delve back into them. 😀 The novelisation of "Star Trek The Motion Picture" is a good read; and, in a sense, a look-see at the path not taken - that of *Star Trek: Phase II* . Speaking of which; a good reference book is: "Star Trek - Phase II: The Lost Series" by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I've had the "Prey" trilogy on Kindle for quite awhile...now I'm intrigued enough to give them a go. 😏

    Great review! I decided to read the Barsoom series after seeing Cosmos in which Carl Sagan spoke so passionately about these stories that he loved as a child. So I started to read A Princess and soon I too was in love with the world of Barsoom. How many of the sequels have you read so far? Most of them are very good in my opinion. My favourites are in fact the fifth book The Chessmen of Mars, and the sixth The Mastermind of Mars. 4:44 Yes, Dejah Thoris almost laughs in John Carter's face when she's talking about 'the hideous contraptions that earthlings insist on wearing on their heads (hats)' :D 11:22 Well I think this is something that old science-fiction wasn't too bothered with: in old Star Trek you also got people who have a human and alien parent. I think at the time people didn't think of life so much as the result of random evolutionary processes, but more as created by the Supreme Being - maybe not consciously but more subconsciously. So it was totally acceptable that aliens looked exactly like humans with some minor variations and could also breed with eachother.

      Oh interesting introduction to the Barsoom novels! I just read Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagon. He didn't mention the Barsoom books though 😂. I've read the first 3 in the series and have the first 7. Yes true. There are actually lots of inconsistencies from every time period, but the egg laying thing struck me as particularly blatant and funny 😂 ❤..

    One Shatner-verse novel that people seem to have forgotten about is: "Star Trek Academy: Collision Course". A reference book that I *really* need to re-read for Book Trek 2024 is : "The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion" by Larry Nemecek
