Final Flight
This was a heartfelt video that was put together by a great friend of mine, shortly before my final flight for the Riverside Police Department in May of 2020. As luck would have it, my actual final flight was in our Cessna 206 airplane. At the time of my final flight, our city was in the midst of civil unrest that had swept across the country. My final flight was an unprecedented operational roundtrip flight to Casper, Wyoming, from Riverside Municipal Airport.

"Retirement" Picture Collage

This was a picture collage that was put together by a dear friend for my "retirement" party, when I left the Riverside Police Department and California for Tennessee. The short video at the end was my final flight for the city, as I landed our Cessna 206 at Riverside Municipal Airport, after a long flight from Casper, Wyoming.
A new name, a new gig and a new ride.

As you might have noticed, I have changed the name of the channel, as I am no longer flying for law enforcement, nor am I flying the MD500. I left California last year and have been flying EMS in Tennessee ever since. It has been a great transition. Sadly, that means no more cockpit videos, but I did recently get a Mavic Air2 drone, so we'll see where things go from here.

In cockpit video of the multi-agency law enforcement helicopter missing man fly-over at the 2015 Riverside County Peace Officers' Memorial, in downtown Riverside, CA. The flight was lead by Inland CHP Air Operation's 'H-80' and joined by Riverside PD's 'Air-1' & 'Air-2', Riverside County Sheriff's STAR-9 and Ontario PD's 'PD-10'.

A friend was in the back seat and captured a portion of a recent vehicle pursuit. Both suspects were eventually taken into custody by ground units after we directed them to their location.

What a coincedence. I am a German police-officer, and back in the mid 2000th I was visiting a friend of my wife's who lived in Riverside. They had a friend, who was a Police-Officer, as well and who was able to arrange it so I could participate in such helicopter patrol flight. Best day of my entire trip, even surpassing a weekend tour to Las Vegas. I remember they had a display cabinet with a lot of emblems and other souveniers from visitors from around the world. I had brought with me a baseballcap with some german police symbol on it, which was originally supposed to be a present for my host, but probably landed in that cabinet, too. I had taken a lot of photographs and videos durig that trip, some years later though my computer had a system crash and everything was erased. But the memories of it will last as long as I live.

Flying helicopters is my favorite thing to do, business or pleasure.
Probably the best part of this is to watch the unmanned right side flight controls to study the amount of input the pilot is putting into them since they are connected to and move along corresponding with the left side flight controls.
Does going from 5 blades to teetering system take some getting used to?
Not really. The semi rigid rotor system definitely isn't as responsive as a fully articulated system. We obviously have to be concerned with mast bumping and negative g maneuvers, but EMS flying is definitely not an agressive style of flying, so it really isn't an issue.

Most likely not. Most if not all HEMS operators require a sterile cockpit.
I would love to, but unfortunately, we aren't allowed by the company to video flights.

Ive met Rocky several times, his stories are incredible, and the flir story with the eye in the sky seeing an unknown creature stalking the officers really hit a nerve, same thing happened to us before. Anyways, safe flying
I would do damn near anything to be a helicopter pilot, sadly my GI Bill couldn't be used to pay for it in California. No where close enough to Riverside offered an approved program.

Is this the C20B enhanced turbine or the C20R engine?
It's the enhanced turbine C20B.
MD500RAT Does the enhanced C20B engine have more benefits than the C20R engine? I know the fuel burn isn’t as bad but is there a power difference? Would the airspeed be greatly impacted?
@@hondo500e I haven't flown a C20R to be able to give you a fair assessment, but we saw a huge performance improvement when we went to the enhanced turbine, especially on high DA days.
How many hours do you have in the 500E?
About 3,500 hours between the D and E models, with the majority being in the E model.

Some police departments direct hire for the aviation units. Some require patrol experience and train from within.
Loachs are found in the 160th Special Ops and the Nasty Guard. When I was assigned to Korea in 92, one of my fellow pilots flew loaches for the 160th. You had to be very detail oriented and mission dedicated.
When I was flying in law enforcement the early 80's I took my full size video cam up a few times. Had some cool shots of the grunion running. All that stuff disappeared during my divorce... Good times.

I know it's work when you do it every day but man I love those MD500's and I'm so jealous. I doubt I'll ever get to a turbine but I'll dream while I toodle around in Robbies and make my own turbine noise at start-up. ;)

Sorry there hasn't been anything new lately. In addition to being back on our night crew, I've also been busy for the last couple months adding on my commercial, instrument and multi-engine airplane ratings.

In 1985 I had the pleasure of a flight in a MD500D, I was only 16, ever since then I've been hooked on helicopters, I have a 700 size electric RC heli now which is fun, and I've done about 9 hours in a R22 just for fun, at £380 per hour for a R22 it's a little cost prohibitive. One day I will pay for a flight in a MD again, full respect for what you guys do, and that heli is awesome!
