    I was on sims for YEARS before I started my training and it helped me a lot. I knew more than most primary students about systems, VORs, cross country, many aspects of flight…because of sim stuff and because of my general geekdom. Once you start training, sims are most helpful with things like flow checks and emergency procedures. You can practice your “L” and “reverse L” flows for things like fire and engine out emergencies. You can practice departing from the pattern for cross countries and depending on the sim nav equipment vs IRL nav equipment, you can practice a bit of that stuff for cross countries, too. What sims really don’t help for is stuff like stick and rudder skills, etc. I maintain that it’s actually easier to land an airplane IRL than it is to land in a sim. You just don’t have the same 3D, seat of your pants feeling in a sim…and my landings in the real world are almost always much smoother than sim landings. The only other bit of advice I have is to be a geek. Learn EVERYTHING you can before showing…”what’s dead reckoning?”, “How do I read a metar or a taf?”, “how do I talk on the radio IRL?”…take a look at the typical PPL syllabus, sporty’s or king’s ground school and *complete* the course before showing up on day one. You’ll be ten steps ahead of the game and your instructor will appreciate the fact that you aren’t entirely starting from scratch, too.

      Hmm, this is a tough question. The cheapest way to go is to buy a joystick w/ a grip that rotates to give you rudder. If you want to spend a little more, you can shop for something with rudder pedals. I'm not up to speed on the latest offerings. My recommendation is you search on ebay and look for a deal there. There are some good video reviews on equipment on youtube...

    Thank you for great advices. Kindly clarify, are FAA rules allow use autopilot during Instrument Rating check ride or not ? Or student can use autopilot for just some phases of flight that ilisted in rules ?

      You have to demonstrate competency in use of the autopilot, IF you have an operable one in the airplane. That means at least one approach using the autopilot, and anything more the DPE wants you to demonstrate (this depends heavily on the DPE's preferences). One Cirrus-flying friend of mine was asked to do 2 approaches with the autopilot on, and one hand-flying. Seth Lake discusses this topic in his videos, as he is a DPE his opinion will be right on point.

    hello, i am new to xplane 11 and i got this plane. There support seems non existent. I am wondering if you still use this plane or if your issue got resolved. Also I am wondering if you know, based on the latest version of xplane 11. xplane 11.55, do you need to have the "use experimental model" checkbox checked in the xplane settings page for this plane flight model to work correctly? Or should you have it unchecked? Thanks.

      See my pinned comment below. Airfoillabs stopped support for this airplane over 2 years ago, so any bugs it has now (and there are many) will never be fixed. I am using the stock 172 for the most part, as it is the most stable and bug-free 172 I've found. As for the "use experimental model", that can't hurt to try. However, I think this airplane is a bit of a lost cause, TBH.

    What models typically able to fly at 170 knots in cruise? Are they running low altitide and engine at full throttle?

      Good question. F33a's could theoretically make 170 knots rich of peak EGT with an IO-520. These days at least half of the F33a's have been upgraded with IO-550s; with that engine 170 knots is more achievable, maybe even slightly lean of peak or at peak EGT. The v-tails are faster- a few knots b/c of the minimized empennage. The S35 is the fastest bonanza... with an IO 550 they can go well past 170 knots. As for the "the fastest place" to operate, That's around 8000-9000' for almost all normally aspirated airplanes. (for turbo charged airplanes, that's the low flight levels, but that's an entirely different ball of wax.) Always full throttle at those altitudes in cruise in an airplane with a constant speed prop- you tweak your engine's performance using mixture and RPM. In the debonair I fly I don't pull back from full throttle for the entire flight, until I am in descent and I am getting "too fast" to slow things down with mixture and RPM adjustments alone. Turbos can hit the 200kt mark in the low flight levels... Cirrus SR22s and a few others of the fast movers can hit 170 knots as well.

    Good information. Similar to landing on RWY 20 in Truckee (KTRK). Rule of thumb is to aim for 1000 feet after the threshold to allow for a severe downdraft about 500 feet before the numbers.

      XPlane 12 is the absolutely most realistic and high fidelity in terms of aerodynamics. If you care about the graphics of trucks on highways and golfers on courses get the gamer special (MSFS).

    Great overview/advice! I have been simming for about 10 years before recently going out to start for real. And essentially I've shelved the sim for now. People ask me what is different - it's the sensations - the vibrations of the entire plane, sounds, the g-forces you feel in your body just causes a sensory overload when you're new. Flying the pattern in the sim feels casual and as if you have all the time in the world. In real life that pattern (for now, me being new) still feels very intense and my brain is firing on all cylinders to make sure everything is happening when it needs to. I worried that doing too much sim time during training would have negative effects so I'm stopping for now. Especially training in a Piper 100i (g3x touch) which there is not a 1:1 equivalent for in the sim.

      By the way, my brain STILL has that "firing on all cylinders" feel when I'm in the pattern, even after hundreds of hours. It never feels routine, at least not yet.

      @@flightlevel1803 reporting back lol! Just passed the checkride. I did end use my flight sim setup for training throughout once I got through my “beginning” phase. I used it to practice checklists , remembering clearing turns and maneuver procedures. Also practiced my cross countries with msfs since the terrain is so accurate. All in all I have found it actually is a great resource for training after you learn the basics of controlling the airplane

      interesting comment. IMO, it depends what your goals are- if you want great graphics and photorealistic scenery, FS2020 is the best bet. But if you want the best flight modeling and the most accurate avionics, X-plane is far better. Personally I use a flight simulator primarily as an instrument training supplement, so x-plane is a better choice for my needs most of the time. Even the FS2020 developers talk about how little effort they made to make their sim be a true representation of reality. X-plane is amazingly accurate when it comes to instrument training. FS2020? not so much!

      @@flightlevel1803 The scenery sucks, so bad, in X-Plane, it is worse than the old FSX, believe, me, I have a Honeycomb Yoke & throttle, and have everything tweaked, to achieve the most realistic flights, ever, my x-plane was only used 5 times, completely shitty sim.

      @@saminaneen you must have some problems with your setup. I have a flying buddy that has similar serious problems with the Honeycomb interface to X-plane, I guess it is a general problem. X-plane is 1000x more realistic than the old FSX. It's all good, the new FS2020 is great if it works for you. I love the honeycomb products, they are so nice! Sounds like you have a good setup.

      but i agree, the graphics aren't great, especially after you've sampled fs2020! given I am doing primarily instrument training and maneuver practice, it doesn't really matter to me tough- the realism is great w/ my setup.

      both are really nice. the seating is very different in the two airplanes... the Mooney is more like a sports car w/ reclining seats, while the deb is more upright. It's a matter of preference.

    Thanks for putting this video together. I have a 1965 Debonair. Just to add one little thing: The white lever below the prop control is connected to the engine intake not the static system. You pull this if the intake filter is clogged to bypass the filter. It could also free potential icing that has built up in the intake system.

    I listen to traffic early coming in from Phoenix. If it’s quiet I make straight in on 3. If it’s busier the direct overhead entry to 3 isn’t hard either. You’re right about staying high on final for 3, the upslope makes stopping easy and the extra altitude protects from wind shear. I love the advice to stay away if winds are over 10 knots in small GA airplanes.

      @@flightlevel1803 It was beautiful. We did the midfield crossing followed by a good landing in the morning sun. We took of from 21 with just below 10kt of tailwind and it worked out just fine. I didn‘t take any photos but definitely will remember this one! 🙏🏻

When I landed there 2 weeks ago, I had a newbie passenger and we did the route around the spires to the northwest of the airport... definitely a bit higher risk, but not unmanageable if the winds are down. We had a mid-size private jet take off from 21 before we landed, so we had to extend our downwind to give the vortices some time to subside before landing on 3. Really a gorgeous place to fly into.

    I bought one crashed and it is currently being put back in shape... The biggest challenge at the moment is to find a used and fitting prop. How much did you spend on the LED lights? Like your C33 a lot as well!

      The LED lights were already installed when purchased. Pretty awesome lighting on this airplane, it really lights things up.

      Glad to help. The simming does help an enormous amount. I flew with an instructor yesterday and he told me that I perfect certain things 5X faster than non-sim pilots in some areas. That's not everything, but certain aspects of working in the sim are enormously helpful. I'm planning a video on how to prepare for instrument training...

      @flightlevel1803 thanks for the response .I live in 🇨🇦. Was starting to work on my RPP.signed up for an online course pilot's training. Ca got the books and on line course but find the whole thing over wellming. Figured at least try the simulators. Give me some kind of idea .at least your video was not holding nothing back thank you again

      @@darylthompson5071it's definitely overwhelming at first. Just take it chunk by chunk, and slowly if you want. I started reading 2 years before I took my written exam, at a slow pace. It made it less stressful. Finding the right instructor will also help.

I've been into flight sims since the early 2000s and I've thought about getting my pilots license, but the financials or time isn't there, so flight simming it is, for now

      October/November & February/March. The hot months are very windy and DAs are high. Generally it's ok all year round as long as you go very early to avoid the afternoon winds and the higher DAs. You could get snow or ice in those months though... but it's not very common at that altitude.

    Got started a few months ago on my xplane journey. Thanks for the video. You mentioned leaving the link to VFR grand canyon route you downloaded through this video, but I don't see it. Where do you download fun or interesting VFR routes to fly for xplane?

      My bad. see this link: forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/39407-kgcn-vfr-tours/&_fromLogin=1 I added it to the video description as well. If you have foreflight, you can zoom in on the canyon, and corridors will appear (along with the restricted areas). It's pretty easy to map your own routes through the corridors. The altitudes and reporting points are visible on the chart. I flew a bonanza about 15 miles east of the Canyon on Thursday, it's pretty spectacular from the air.
