    That log structure dates to the second half of the 19th century. The area was used to cut timber for the mines to the east, and there was a sawmill near the campground location. There were still crude intact buildings in the 1960s. There was a log flume all the way down to Owen's Lake. Cut and milled timber for mines were shipped across the lake, and then loaded on wagons to haul to the numerous mines to the east (such as the large ghost town of Cerro Gordo in the Inyos above Mono Lake and numerous abandoned towns and mines in the Panamints further east). There are also charcoal kilns still standing near the lake which used the wood to make charcoal for the mines. Owen's Lake is now gone - dried up by the City of Los Angeles when it acquired nearly all the water rights for Owen's Valley. They opened a 200+ mile aqueduct in 1917 to provide crucial water for Los Angeles, which is the destination for the water up there.

      Thank you so much for the info! How interesting and actually kind of sad that a lake used to be there that completely dried up. Do you have any articles about this history? Perhaps I will make a short follow-up video about this structure. It would be quite interesting. I'm always so fascinated about the history of places, and I hope that my viewers enjoy these aspects of my videos as much as the nature and camping shots. Any resources you have would be great, even for future locations that I visit. Again, thank you for watching my videos. :)

    In the Sierras, what you labeled as Newberry Gentia is usually referenced as Alpine Gentia. Both common names are used, but Alpine is what is typically used in the Sierra. It is also fitting as it is only found in alpine meadows at or above timberline. It's a beautiful thing that reminds you that you are in the high country.

      That's so great to hear, and you're not the only one! I posted the series on Facebook and got some similar responses. Maybe you found it there? Thank you for watching! I'm already thinking about my next trip, sometime in October or late September. I didn't have any problems with the elevation and distance, so I think I can push myself a little harder, perhaps head up a pass and maybe even attempt to reach a lower summit. Let me know if you have any suggestions :)

    • @HuskyMike
      @HuskyMike 8 дней назад

      @@adventuresandreams If you are talking about another trip in the Cottonwood Lakes area, I enjoyed our first night at Cirque Lake and would recommend camping there. Out of the way like Muir so less people (which I like). You could also camp at a lake near New Army Pass (High Lake or Long Lake?) and summit Mt Langley (weather permitting). There is also Miter Basin which is amazing (from the videos I've watched). Lots of choices. I have also done a 60 mile loop starting and ending at Cottonwood Pass that went: Cottonwood Pass to Rock Creek (Camp 1) to Guitar Lake (camp 2). Summited Mt Whitney then up and over Discovery Pass and down into Crabtree Basin (last two parts were off-trail, but not too difficult). Hiked down Crabtree Basin to Crabtree Meadows (Camp 3). Re-connected with the PCT (the trail I came in on) and out to the trailhead. The last day was a very long 20 mile day. I'd probably find a place to camp halfway or so back to add one more night.

      @@HuskyMike Thank you so much for the quick reply and great suggestions. I will definitely save those in my list of places I want to visit. 60 miles, that's quite a bit. I know that I wouldn't be able to do that in the time that's always available to me (Thursday - Sunday) because it takes quite a bit of time to film my adventures. I often walk the same path twice to retrieve the camera :D I do like your idea of Cirque Lake if it has fewer people, as you say. That's really important for me as well. It seems to be a bit harder in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to find super remote areas, or perhaps I don't know enough about the region yet. Several people recommended Cottonwood Lakes to me, and it was honestly pretty busy except for my path back to the TH. I think I'll definitely research some more out-of-the-way places next time.

    • @HuskyMike
      @HuskyMike 8 дней назад

      @@adventuresandreams Yes, it's hard to find much seclusion in these areas. If you go to Cirque Lake, take the South Fork Cottonwood Creek Trail. I didn't see a single person on my way to Cirque. Give Miter Basin a look too. Once you break off of the main trail and head into the basin toward Sky Blue Lake, it's doubtful you'll run into many (if any) people. Looks like youtube deleted my second comment (I think because I included my dog's social media name). I just followed you in case you want to check out our pics of the Cottonwood Lakes area. In that reply, I also included suggestions for Rae Lakes, Little Lakes Valley and Big Pine Lakes hike. Not very secluded but (I think) spread out enough that you could find some quiet, alone time). Enjoy.

      @@tonesmith909 Haha, yeah, it sure is an investment. I think it was a bit cheaper when I bought it back in 2018. Just think about it this way: it's a tent for life! If you follow Hilleberg a bit and see their posts, you will see that they show tents in use from 30+ years ago. I may have to replace the cord inside the tent poles at some point, but otherwise, this tent will last. I would also like to buy the Soulo soon, but I lack the funding for now. Wow, the rocky, rugged coast was beautiful! I've never camped by the ocean before. I like places where the forest comes to the edge of the water. So nice! PS: There is a way to erect a double walled tent in the rain by putting up the fly first, then getting underneath to attach the inner tent. It's a bit awkward, but doable. However, I know you're now using a lighter, single wall tent.

    • @adventuresandreams
      @adventuresandreams 18 дней назад

      Thank you so much for heading over to this video to check it out. I'm glad you liked it. Yes, this location was super special, and many of the campsites were near the water. I think it's pretty busy there on sunny days, but this was the Easter weekend with storms and rain, so I had the trail to myself. I tried one time to set up the rainfly first and then the inner tent, but it was so hard. I always wanted to do that again and film it, though. I really should. It would be a good skill to have. I will still use this tent if the hike is less strenuous or if I go canoe camping. I love this tent, but the lighter one makes more sense in the mountains. I still want to get a lighter winter tent as well. My Hilleberg tent is very spacious but incredibly heavy. I have carried it a couple of times, but it works best with the sled. I have several winter camping trips on my channel, too, if you want to check them out. :) Thank you again for watching and for your support! I hope to see your comments again sometime. :)

    I was over on Facebook and saw your post about this trip and followed the link to RUclips. I posed a couple of questions on your FB post only to see them answered here.😊 Before you went on your trip I'm the one who shared with you about using my Ursack at Cottonwood Lakes a couple of weeks before your trip. I'm happy to see you, too, had a good experience with your Ursack there. It's such a good feeling to wake up the next day and see that it was left undisturbed!😂 And I was really glad to see you work hard to get the mouth closed, it's a piece of work to do so, but so needful. I'm glad to see your experience with the Goal Zero solar panel. I'm seriously thinking of getting one for the same reasons you mentioned. I hate the added weight, but some things are just worth it. I'm curious what your pack weight is, without water or fanny pack. Mine currently weighs in at 23 lbs, but I think by redoing a couple of things I can get it down to 21. I'd ultimately like to get it down to 19-20 lbs, it would be so much nicer to carry. Thanks for sharing your trip, I enjoyed watching. PS: I can relate to sleeping in the car at Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. Not the most comfortable experience, but it's nice to be able to do so when necessary. However, now that I'm retired I go up three days early to acclimate which I'm finding to be very helpful after coming from sea level.

      It's so great to see your comment in my video, Ronnette! I really appreciate it, also your Ursack comment a few weeks ago. You convinced me to use it instead of buying a bear canister, and I'm so glad that I took it. I've had it for five or six years now, and never had a problem with it. A friend of mine watched my video and offered me her somewhat smaller bear canister after her upcoming trip. She will no longer need it and wants to gift it to me. That is so kind, and if I ever make my way into a National Park, I will surely use it. You asked about the pack weight. I wish I could tell you, but I never checked it. I should do so for my next trip, and I'll let you know. But I have to say, my new tent, the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid 1, has made a HUGE difference in weight. It's 1/4 of my previous 2-person tent. It weighs only 16 ounces + the tent stakes. I don't know what gear you have and if you could deal with a somewhat more primitive tent setup, but it's so worth it for the size and weight difference. Now to the Goal Zero. I truly can't recommend it enough. It's very lightweight, and I would consider taking a smaller power bank if I had one because I can charge it all day. It works surprisingly well in the tent and on cloudy days. You'll see more of that in my next Sierra video if you want to watch it. If you want to find out a bit more about the Goal Zero, you can check out my review here. I was on a multi-day canoe camping trip and filmed the review with many great shots of the camping trip itself. I think you would enjoy it :) ruclips.net/video/el6GeOFCn0Y/видео.html Also, I admire you for going up to the mountains days before your actual trip! That's so amazing. My husband needs the car three days a week, so the earliest I can drive there from Irvine is Wednesday evenings. That gives me just one night to get used to the elevation, but thankfully, I had no problems at all on my last trip. It surprised me, and I'm ready for a slightly more challenging route next time. I'll be sure to ask for recommendations in the FB group again, or do you have any? Anyway, thank you again for your comments here and in the FB group! I hope to hear from you again soon, Ronnette :)

There is tons of space, though. You just have to plan ahead a bit. After a couple of nights, I set it up even better to have more room. I filmed a super detailed review and setup guide for it that might be interesting for you. I'll be working on those videos after the trip videos :) If you didn't see it, I have a link at the top of the description that goes to a blog post describing my adventurous drive to the parking lot. Thanks for making this video. I just got a katadyn pocket filter also but the water that is coming out from running already filtered tap water theough it has a very strong unpleasant chemical-like smell and is extremely bubbly (it has no smell before going through the katadyn filter). I've cleaned it thoroughly and applied lubricant to the threads but no change. It seems like the smell dissipates somewhat if I let the filtered water sit out afterwards but I don't feel comfortable drinking the water that comes out of this because of how strong the smell it adds to the water is. Have you encountered this issue?

      @adventuresandreams Месяц назад

      Hi there, thank you so much for watching my video. The issue you describe is new to me, the smell at least. I have encountered bubbles in the past from pressing the water through the filter. I don't want to give you any wrong answers, so I will contact Katadyn for you and find out about it. It's a good thing for me to learn as well. They are pretty fast in responding. Perhaps you can hold off on using the filter for a couple of days while I get the answer for you? I hope your filter is ok, but if it's a new one and the ceramic element is faulty, they will replace it for sure. If you find out about it before I get back to you, please let me know here as well. I am currious about this issue for sure.

      @adventuresandreams Месяц назад

      Hello again, I already heard back from Katadyn, and this is what they wrote: "Thank you for your email. We have not received complaints of a chemical odor from the Pocket. The Pocket is only to be cleaned with water and no cleaning solutions or soap. If cleaners are used, they could be absorbed into the filter and that could be the cause of the chemical odor. That is just a guess. The customer might want to try soaking it in 1 tbs of household vinegar to 1 liter of water. Perhaps that might remove the taste. " Please let me know if the vinegar helps. Good luck, Andrea

      @@adventuresandreams Hi, thanks for your reply. I was planning to contact them also if I couldn't find anything else out online otherwise but.. just to clarify, the smell I was getting is on the first use, after cleaning with only water and nothing else. @@improvetheworldnow Interesting. I hope that the vinegar works, followed by lots of clean-water rinsing. I've had mine for many years so I honestly can't even remember my first use. Ha, thanks for watching! You are right. The weight difference is ridiculous, and I will only take the bigger tents when I'm canoe camping or perhaps car camping out in the dessert or so. Otherwise there is no reason to take so much extra weight! I just came back from my 4-day backpacking trip yesterday, and I have to say that the much smaller space took a little time to adjust to, and It was "raining" condensation in it one morning, but otherwise the tent was great. More to come in my next videos from the trip and the Mid 1 itself :)

      Thanks for watching my video! I'm glad you got the filter, and would love to hear from you how you like it after using it a bit. I think this filter is super useful in some situations, but definitely not all. I took it backpacking one time, and the weight was just too much for that. I'll take my BeFree filter any day with my backpack, though. But when the water is super dirty, I would trust this filter more than any other, and it lasts forever. I think it could be useful for off-grid living and very long tours, also canoe camping where weight doesn't play as much of a role. What did you buy it for? I'm currious! Take good care of it and let it dry for a very long time! :)
