This series is a record of my journey after a 40 year break from playing guitar semi-professionally in the ‘70s, changing career in the 80s and ending up director of a multi-media studio. In that role, I’ve been involved with music production and sound design, but in recent years as I took semi-retirement, I’ve enjoyed picking up the guitar once more to appreciate both the joy of playing and writing new material to record. But, if like me you’re also playing again after a long break, you too may be scratching your head at the bewildering amount of product out there. So as I’m in the business of film-making, I thought it would be useful to video my experience of catching up - and I also provide the backing tracks I use to demonstrate the guitars. For those just starting out, you may find the videos helpful, for the rest of you - you might just find them entertaining. 😉 Get in touch with your own experiences and tips - and remember to subscribe, hit the bell and all that stuff! Enjoy!

Very nice. It would have been so helpful if you would have shown the knobs of the Studio 10 to see your choices. Thanks!
Hi Oldtimer99... Thank you for chipping in... always appreciated. In regard to EQ settings, because I use different guitars and record different works of music I need to alter the EQ settings on all my amplifiers to suit - both when I am just jamming and when I am specifically recording. I did a deeper review on both those amplifiers if your interested - The Fender Blues here - ruclips.net/video/KDS_ZTNseJw/видео.html - and the Studio 10 here - ruclips.net/video/hgXKNtEr0wM/видео.html - You can see the Studio 10 being used quite a bit with the various pedal reviews I have done showing the all the settings used. These are mainly under my 'Unboxing Music Equipment Videos' Channel Playlist. Regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel Thank you for your kind response. I will check them; and actually several of the other videos as well. Highly educational.
@@oldtimer99 You are very welcome... regards: Stu

Hi Mr.Phats... thanks for chipping in... it certainly has that distinctive Texas Special twang... regards: Stu
Hi Stu; She is a beauty and sounds fantastic, pure envy on my part. That case needs to have some relic'ing done to it too to make it fit the guitar, maybe some stickers and scuff marks eh! Cheers. (Oh, I ordered some copper tape, high end stuff, figured it is worth a shot with my Gretsch).
Thanks Weasel... I did think about doing the case, but thought better of it... ;-) In the next video I will be taking a hard look at whether its all really worth the work involved considering what's available commercially today and particularly with so many interest free deals available. I'm not sure the foil is the answer to your electrical problem but it will be interesting to hear how you get on with this.... regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel Even if your home built costs the same, or more, you still retain bragging rights to having built it from scratch. Anyone can dump $$$ for a bells and whistle guitar.
@@weasel6535 Thanks Weasel... regards: Stu
I love those pickups, they sound really nice. 🎉Finally finished congratulations brother.
Hi Allen - Many thanks. The Texas Specials certainly have their own distinctive tone but they really do need EQ'd to get the best out of them depending on what's being played. In the next video... I am going to re-visit some of the items I used in the build and possible amendments to follow... speak soon brother... regards: Stu
@StuGuitarChannel anytime I've put new pickups in it seems I adjust the 1000 times before I'm happy 🤣
@@Allen-gj3qdYep.... we just can't stop always tweaking things... ;-) As I begin laying down some recordings, this is where I will definitely notice what direction I need to take.... ;-)
Nice to see what your finished build looks and sounds like - looking forward to the comparison and your conclusions, Stu! 👍
Many thanks Derek... it feels like its taken forever but its been fun watching it come together... but changes are certainly afoot... regards: Stu
@ Even putting two finished-body partscaster Teles together took me a lot longer than I expected, although I don’t have your skills! And they are still evolving, with neck swaps, pickup changes and hardware upgrades - it’s been a real learning curve and very rewarding experience. Two guitars that I won’t (ahem) part with! 🎸🎸🙂👍
@@derekclacton Hi Derek - Without doubt the Telecaster style format makes it a great foundation for folks at various skill levels to make something that is their own. I did consider carving out the body in various places just to make it even more comfortable and unique, but I'm just a traditionalist at heart... ;-) What pick-up have you been trying out? I am re-thinking the Texas Specials... I actually did not want the same type of pick-ups in this guitar build, but Fender only sell theses in sets. Regards: Stu
@ You made drilling the screw holes look so easy! I thought I’d checked enough times before drilling but found out the hard way some holes were out (less than 1mm) and that the tolerances are very small 🙄 Pickups are Tonerider Hot Classics (which are staying) in one Tele and the other currently has a Tonerider Alnico II Blues in the bridge. Trying a range of different neck pickup types with it - IronGear Steel Foundry single coil originally and currently a Tonerider Alnico II Classic humbucker. IronGear Blues Engine humbucker and Rolling Mill mini humbucker to test out next. I’m interested to see what sounds best, as they all have different Alnico magnets. I have a solderless harness, so swapping pickups isn’t too tricky. Likely I’ll end up either back with the single coil, or the mini humbucker - both of which have chrome covers that really suit the look of the guitar. Always a compromise with the pot and cap values and when I’ve finished tweaking those I’ll look forward to the next project! 🎸🙂👍
@@derekclacton Yes... drilling holes takes a bit of practice although there are a couple of inexpensive easy to use tools available to help keep your hand drill straight and true other than an actual drill-press. Do you notice a 'very' noticeable difference between all those pick-up changes? I must admit, I do prefer the chrome cover on the neck pick-up. I did toy with the idea of a humbucker and I may still give it a go although it would mean routing out the space for it. So.... what's the next project... ;-) Regards: Stu
What a great channel and tutorials you have Sir ! May I ask where I could have some waterslide decals made similar to the ones you have , they look perfect !
Hi Lou - Thank you for the kind comments... the transfers come from a company called "Rothko and Frost" and it appears they deliver worldwide. If you just do a search for their name adding either transfers or decals at the end or (.com) and you should find them easily enough. I can't write out the actual web address because it will not get posted by RUclips. You will see that you can go with various styles of ready designed layouts and or design your own. They really are very good quality. When doing small printed areas its best to use capital letters if you want them to stand out better. They give you extra transfers so you get enough to do some tests should you make a mistake. Regards: Stu
The "Bluebird" has finaly breathed life and wow. It looks and sounds just so amazing, Stu.
Many thanks Scouse... it is a lovely guitar to play but I'm having second thoughts about the pick-up layout... more to follow in part 10... regards: Stu

I forgot how much I really dislike the cold.... time to hibernate! regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel Hello Stu - if you put some cold air in cans and I bottle some heat and share the postage costs we could create temperature stability for both of us. Cheers🌍
@@robertcalvin2643 Mmmm... perhaps we might have a business opportunity here... ;-)
Hey, my fiesta red strat is named The Bird LOL I always wanted a blue tele, and you pretty much designed exactly what was in my head. Looks and sounds fantastic, texas specials sound overwound so they'll breakup great and drive the front end too. I'm an underwound guy, but that might be the only detail I would have happened to build differently than this. Nothing like a finished project tele to cure tele GAS. Good shot, old boy.
Hi Craig... I hope you have managed to get your basement back together and the various rep[airs completed. You are absolutely spot on regarding the Texas Specials. I actually did not want two of the same pick-ups but you can only get Fender stuff in 'Sets' and I thought I would give them a try since I don't have any Fenders with them in. I will be however, taking another look at this as I also prefer a less bright tone. Even pulling back on the amplifier or pedals can't really remove that break-up these pick-ups exhibit. For certain things I can see the appeal but it's not really working for me. When I put it up against my other Tele's in the next video the difference will be very telling... regards: Stu
WOW! I'm no expert but it sounds good to me - and I'm sorry I haven't had the time to get that campaign off the ground to get the populace marching in the streets in opposition to you destroying that beautiful gee-tar you built and justifying it by calling it 'relicing'! 😉 (Glad you found my last comments amusing too 😉😉😉😉) PS Watching the set-up was interesting. I've always wondered how it was done. Thanks for that. PPS Love the BlueBird name! PPS Too much hard work for me but I'm leaving links to this lying around for my husband - maybe too late for Christmas but my birthday next year may be long enough to make me a parlour sized version - without destroying its good looks. Maybe a pink one. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 PPPS The more I've listened to you playing - I'm falling in love with it. Well done! It's pretty amazing.
Well thank you very much Honey Bee-Dee for the kind comments... @@StuGuitarChannel Great tip, cheers 👍
Absolutely stunning work brother! Can't wait to hear it.
Hi Allen... Thank you, it's looking not to bad if I say so myself... ;-) But would I do it again? and yes the big question... how does it sound and what's it like to play... and does it come close to a Fender Custom Shop... all will be revealed soon... ;-) God bless and speak in due course... Stu
You know, when you first put down the blue I was like "eh, not my cup of tea but as long as Stu likes it then good for him" but seeing the picture of the finished product at the 20min mark, it is very cool looking and a great colour. Here is a question for you, off topic but since you mentioned ground loop problem, have you ever used or tried eliminating hum/buzz with copper tape? If so, was it successful?
Hi Weasel... Interesting thing about the blue which is due to the metallic... it looks different in different types of lighting and at various angles. In generally flat even lighting is where you see its true colour no matter what angle you look at it. I will be doing a video on various questions I was asked regarding the build and the big question - does it stack up against my Fender Custom Shop Tele 61 ;-) Copper foil... no I have not used it and I decided not to go down that route. I have seen and heard several tests where copper foil and paint have been put up against each other in a side by side bench test. The result were pretty much comparable and in one test the paint was a bit better. The only thing I would say about the paint is, it needs a good key so a light sanding of the cavities should be done. 3 coats are best and once completely dry, when I came to do the final guitar body clear-coat lacquer - I also sprayed the painted cavities. The lacquer (tests have been done) does not affect the paints properties but will help to stop the paint peeling and bits causing shorts on wiring connections. As I said in the film I had to insulate my jack socket prongs as they were touching the sides of the jack socket hole. Are you still having earthing issues? regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel Yes, just with my Gretsch Jet. I have switched where the amp is plugged in etc, sometimes it is stone dead silent, and then other times as soon as a string is played the buzzing and humming is awful. My luthier said nothing can be done about it, but I find that hard to believe and because I live in such a small place he is the only guy in town. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
@@weasel6535 Hi Weasel - If I can help it's my pleasure... its getting late here and I'm in the middle of finishing a job that came into the studio so I will give this some thought tomorrow and will likely ask you a few questions to see if we can resolve this... regards: Stu
Great finish on it, I'm interested how you'd get a better finish if you weren't relic-ing it. Overall thus far from a guitar newbie in general this has been a great education. Thanks for bringing us ( well me at least ) on this journey. I did fancy having a go until you got to the wiring a lot of which went waaaaaaay over my head. Tune next time maybe? All the best brother, great job.
Hi Pete... Many thanks... There are easier ways to get a standard clean finish and I'll kind of address that in another video as I've been collecting comments and discussions regarding various questions on guitar building - not that I'm any kind of expert but just my observations during this build. There are different approaches to wiring and I will cover that. Ahh yes... the reason I built the guitar... to play some tunes... ;-) It's actually playing very well without any set-up but it definitely needs set-up properly - so once that's done (and this is a very useful thing to learn) - it's "playing a tune time"... ;-) God bless... Stu
@ 😄
It's looking so amazing, Stuart. Love it m8ty
Hi Scouse... thank you... it does look quite fetching... ;-) Next week we get to hear how it sounds and was it all worth it? ... ;-) regards: Stu
Poll comment: Purposely crack the pickguard with a couple screws, or no? I was looking forward to this one, and the timing is great. We've just had the worst flood in memory which included every room, so I've been busy with roof, ceiling and floor repairs. No wall damage, at least. And almost no equipment lost, thanks to the fact I wake up at 5a.m..Finally after a week, I have a day to breathe because I just got word the new carpets will be a day late, so I have nothing to do today but watch videos and apparently catch a head cold? Curious what kind of wiring you used. I like gibson 50s style wiring in everything but my tele which I like to take the tone circuit out of the neck. Ideally I'd have broadcaster blend wiring but where the neck position is wide open not muffled, and the middle position is the blend. But I can't find anyone who knows how to do that lol I knew the checking would look great, didn't suspect it wouldn't show up well on camera. Mine shows up well, but remember I did it to a production line Les Paul Standard, so the paint is ridiculously thick. It's probably also the different colors, gold being lighter to show off the lines maybe. Now I'm curious how the ferule peel might be avoided? I think if they were recessed, it would wear like that anyway just not laterally, more heterogeneously. So maybe sand even more of the ferule peel away? I'm no expert, definitely don't listen to me lol
Hi Craig... Ouch!!! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles... that's quite a challenge to deal with... flooding is so destructive and causes so much damage in so many ways, really sorry to hear this has happened. Thankfully it sounds like your gear was spared from what could have been a very upsetting outcome, I do hope you are able to get your home back in shape soon. In regard to wiring - I used 'Vintage Stranded 22AWG Hook-up Wire' and the loaded control plate was a spare Fender Custom Shop Nocaster 52 fully loaded wired plate. I have to admit, wiring is not my strong point and I just followed the Texas Special pick-up wiring diagram that came in the box. In the next video (completed guitar) I will photograph the body from different angles with various lighting to see if I can get it to show up more on screen. I knew the ferrule hole area would get damaged and I was not bothered. Certainly, if someone wanted to avoid this then there are really good sanding pads available that don't need water and don't clog... but they are pricey. Otherwise, filling holes full of wax is popular along with just avoiding sanding with a block too close to the holes. I did think about peeling away more around the holes to exaggerate the damage but in the end I just wanted to get the thing put together... ;-) Next video is the big tell... was it all worth it? Take care Craig and all the very best with the house.... Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel I appreciate it. It's not as bad as it sounds once you know more. It's not the house I have the family in, so they're comfortable at what we call the castle, and it's what we call the dungeon that flooded (the cottage was spared as well). It's a berm home, concrete floors, buried rock exterior walls, no load-bearing interior walls, so it's impervious to structural damage. After a roof repair and ceiling patch and carpet removal and cleanup, we're ready to put in a new floor and start bringing gear back into the room.
@@CraigFlowersMusic Hi Craig... good to hear... I had visions of your guitar collection floating down the street.. ;-( The Castle sounds interesting... ;-) regards: Stu

Great review very informative Thanks
Hi Chris - Thanks for the kind remark, always appreciated... do take a look around my channel as you may find other video reviews done helpful... regards: Stu
Motor doesn't last long. Had mine for a few years now and the motor slows right down to nothing I've moved up to the the pro and works alot better for me
Hi Robert - Thanks for chipping in... much appreciated. Always good to hear other folks experiences. I've had the unit a while now and I don't use it that often but so far it's still working fine. Certainly if I did use a winder more frequently then it would be best to look at something built of higher quality... regards: Stu
Hello Stu. This is a great unit and if I didn't already own 2 Rack Mount Delay Units and 2 Boss DM Units I would purchase the Keeley. I have never experienced volume decrease with Delay feeding Valve or Solid State Guitar Amps. Cheers .
Hi Rob... Many thanks... Yes, it looks like you have yourself well covered there... ;-) I had a search around the internet and found a few folks with the same issue. Some wondered if this was down to a faulty unit but I have also heard of others with this problem concerning other pedal types as well. Regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel Cheers Stu. - Have a great week.
Is this available in the U.S.?
Hi Patrick - I do believe it is now... you might be interested in the upgrade I did with this which you can see here - ruclips.net/video/x0cxLtTouJs/видео.html - regards: Stu
Awesome video Stu have a great day also I have a fungal infection in my head ❤😢
Hi Amin... many thanks as always... Oh dear! While I am not a doctor, I understand that this is usually treated with antifungal medication or sometimes an antifungal shampoo if it's caught quickly. Do make sure you get this seen to as soon as possible and do take good care of yourself.... please do let me know how you get on... best regards: Stu
Gee, that is a $500 pedal in Canada, crazy. I had a Fender tube amp but had to return it for a Boss Katana digital, the tube amp only sounded good when volume was above 7, and that is rather loud for a bedroom player. Your rig sounds great though eh.
Hi Weasel - Yes, it's not a cheap pedal (although certainly not the dearest) but it does have a very clean spectrum of tone that does cut through well. I often find delay / echo units can be a bit hit or miss if you are looking for a really tight sound. Unfortunately, valve amps tend to sing sweetly at a given volume - which is usually... very loud ;-) The Bad Cat Black Cat actually sounds very good at bedroom volumes (hint of edge of break-up still possible) but comes at a price. My Marshal Vintage Studio Plexi I reviewed needs an attenuator to drop the volume levels needed to get the best out of that amplifier. I will give a thumbs up for the little Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 I did a review on. I still have it as it's a super little valve/digital hybrid capable of valve crunch tones at bedroom levels. The Katana is a popular choice, I've never tried one out myself. Regards: Stu
Not explored the murky world of effects pedals greatly so this has helped a little. I'll wait until I get an amp amd have gotten to grips with actually being able to play something coherent before I explore. However, interesting to start out with at least an idea of what does what. Thanks Stu, all the best. GBY
Hi Pete - Thanks for chipping in... if you check through my channel list - the unboxing list - you will see a whole range of pedals that I have reviewed. I think a multi effects unit would likely be a good place to start as you get tons of effects all in one box - here is one I got very early on - ruclips.net/video/CztZzleeySk/видео.html - speak later.... regards: Stu
I use upwards of ten different drives for voicing, but my only time based effect is a 1981 stereo memory man, and I like it that way. As an ironic result I can't speak on time based effects at all whatsoever. A blind spot in my love of gear, just because I love my piece of kit so much lol
Hi Craig - I tottally understand... ;-) I started out using a noisy tape based Wem Copycat - playing stuff like 'The Good The Bad & The Ugly' which use to go down really well... ;-) As I became more involved with performing, the engineer would use a tape based Roland Space Echo and ADT when I did certain lead breaks. And now today, the simple Mini MXR Carbon Copy Delay was as far as I wanted to go... however... this Keeley has changed my mind. Old dogs can learn new tricks... ;-) I'm preparing the hair-dryer and compressed air cans this weekend.... ;-) regards: Stu
Nice review. Amazing what you get for the price and certainly a good option for modification using a Fender authorised platform. I love the colour and will certainly consider this telecaster when back at work and the folding stuff in surplus.

The upgrades sound fantastic, and I would encourage anyone who is looking to build their grail on a budget to be paying attention. For me, I have a vast collection, and they all have their place. My Squire debut strat is my (working overtime on 3rd shift) practice machine. In the end, y'all, don't get too invested in cheap gear, because the day will come when you want something better, and you will be stuck with either unwanted clutter, or a serious loss. Great playing as always, but we all don't need a collection of grail guitars. Believe me. It cause many problems. Have you grail(s). Have your beaters. But don't go nuts with it. Diminishing returns are destined.
Hi - Thanks for chipping in... Yes, collecting guitars can be a bit of a hazard... ;-) I suppose... if it's a hobby where collecting lots of guitars is part of the fun of that hobby... then no harm done. Yet, like most collections, they can become a bit of a liability for different reasons. Thinking back to the early 1970s as a performing musician, I was doing well if I ever owned more than 2 guitars at any one time... ;-) Hence the reason most of us back then, just repainted our guitars to get a new look... was that a good thing? for sure, it was not so much about the instrument but more about using it... regards: Stu
I do like a les paul, good to know about the P90's as I was thinking about cjanging mine eventually. Used to have them on my wildkat but only played quietly. Great review, very thorough. Shame about the qc fail but I guess these things happen but at that price point it should be better. Sounded good though.
Hi Pete - On a Tea-Break are we... ;-) Yes, the P90s do have a tone all their own although they can be a little noisy (hum) but not an issue at bedroom volumes. I'm not actually sure about fitting P90s to your Epiphone LP Standard... these conversions are not always that straight-forward and a bit of homework would need to be done. I would say at present - just keep up the practising, you may find that further down the guitar journey you could pick up an effects pedal that will broaden your tonal choices before dismantling the guitar... ;-) Next time your up here... you can have a listen to the various pedals I have to help you hear how they shape sound. God bless... best regards: Stu

Impressive content, Stu's Guitar Channel. Looking forward to your next video. I smashed that thumbs up button on your upload. Keep up the fantastic work! Your attention to detail in the relicing process is remarkable. Have you considered experimenting with different aging techniques for the hardware to achieve a more unique look?
Hi Keyser - Thanks for the support, very much appreciated. Did you have something in mind in regard to a 'unique look'? I'm not sure how much you have seen on my channel so without boring you... ;-) I use to work in a number of engineering jobs, part of which was customization of cars and motorcycles and I have worked on apocalyptic style machines where we had to make various materials look a certain way. My job in the media production industry (photography, film etc) I was involved in many special effects models and again we used a lot of techniques to get a particular 'look'. Even recently working on a model railway documentary series we needed to 'age' locomotives, buildings and railway track. So.... that's a long winded (sorry) way of saying.... yes, I'm familiar with various effects techniques. I did not go wild on this guitar, it's quite a conservative relic job which is what I wanted to do. I'm considering doing a Strat heavy relic but it depends on my work schedule. I did consider doing a more unique custom style guitar that would be very different than the normal and perhaps in due course I might just do that... it's all a bit of fun... anyway... many thanks for the kind comments.... regards: Stu
Those pick ups from Fender were much fuller sounding , Currently watching your custom Tele build .
Hi Dave - While the Debut pick-ups are actually pretty good for the money, there is a greater dynamic response from the Custom Shop Texas Specials... but when you factor in that the pick-ups cost a good bit more than the actual guitar... ;-) I hope to have my custom built tele style guitar completed in a few weeks and I will compare some side by side clips from the Debut loaded with the Texas Specials and the new Custom Build... should be an interesting exercise... regards: Stu

Great review , I like a lot of other viewers thought the pick guard changed and improved the guitars look . I bought a Fender Tele a few years back but never gelled with it and moved it on , but do have now an inexpensive kit type Tele I bought on ebay part finished . It came with a bridge similar to the one you have there and when I strung it up the strings lifted the saddles off the bridge , some head scratching and thought ! I bought some ferruls and drilled through the body converting it to through body stringing and hey presto sorted , sounds great and as it is inexpensive I have tried lots of different pick up arrangements ,its great . I wonder how the Debut would react to a similar conversion , may improve it ? I liked and subscribed .

She is going to be a beauty Stu. I am still fighting with the neck of my Gretsch Jet, wiping before playing helps but I think it may need a sand job over the rubbing compound, at least lightly anyway. I love that Gretsch makes beautiful guitars, but the necks are like glue. I cannot remember if you stated in your earlier videos if you were building for a specific genre of music or an all around guitar.
Hi Weasel - I was almost tempted to finish the body today but managed to hold myself back... ;-) In regard to the Gretsch... Don't do this if you are thinking of selling the guitar! You could take 5000 or 7000 grit paper to the back of the neck which may do nothing, but it may just take that sticky feel away. Once I polished the back of this neck a slight stickiness returned and that's why I gave a light rub over with 7000 grit and left it, and now it feels super fast. Regarding musical style for the guitar... I will be putting on a set of 10-48 strings to help thicken out the Texas Specials a little since they are bright tonally. Telecasters cut really well in a recording mix and are so easy to work with regardless of musical genre. My own compositions are both cinematic and ballad style blues rock and this guitar should cut well in the mix. Regards: Stu
Rock on Stu 😊
:-) Well it will not be long now.... regards: Stu
It's starting to look like a guitar! What are you shooting for, about ten parts or so? By the way if you're looking for video ideas I recently stumbled across something called Barefaced AVD cabs. They make bold claims, but the science adds up. Might be worth looking at, I dunno. Also congrats on 1k! That's a number I look forward to with warm fuzzies.
Hi Craig.... it certainly is.... ;-) Yes, I reckon 10 parts should do it... I have a couple of wee surprises along the way ;-) I had heard of Bareface but had not had a good look around their website.... until this moment... I like the green tolex finish... Do a time-lapse film of your LP in a freezer and that should get you some attention ; -) I would definitely watch it... regards: Stu
Would you say this would be a good purchase if you were looking for a tele strictly to record with specifically for situations where you want that very unique telecaster tone , particularly from the bridge pickup? And also noting I would be ok upgrading the electronics if I felt it warranted…I actually like the thinner look of the body …seems it would make for quick handling in the home studio…but wonder if the all-important feel and playability of the neck would make it less enjoyable and easy to write and record with. As with you, I’m 100% only into writing and recording and this would be a tool for those specific situations when I want that unique bite and twang of a tele’s tone. Great channel , btw, I subscribed.
Hi Chatter - Thanks for subscribing... much appreciated - you can also private message me (many do) if you prefer to chat about what you are up to and looking to achieve without giving too much detail on the open message forum. Anyway... to answer your question... I'm just in the middle of a job just now but will reply in a couple of hours - those are good questions but to answer them better... I may have some questions for you... be back shortly.... regards: Stu
Hi Chatter - To try and answer your questions I have done a couple of videos on entry-level telecaster type guitars - The debut model I have already done an upgrade on, which you can see here - ruclips.net/video/x0cxLtTouJs/видео.html and another model from Gear4Music you can see here - ruclips.net/video/EWSD9s6iaA0/видео.html So to answer the question of - are these entry-level guitars (sub $150.00) purchased brand new worthwhile upgrading? I suppose the answer is both yes and no… so much depends on who the guitar is for and what environment will it be used in. While, like you… I am very much centred on writing and composition, I am still however, very much connected to feel and tone that sits well with myself and helps me produce high quality results without annoying equipment related issues. So… while the Debut Telecaster is certainly a lot of guitar for the money that has the ‘Fender’ approval badge (if that’s important - and for some, it gives confidence in the product) it’s not a guitar I would personally use for my own personal reasons. However - Yes it does give a reasonable Tele Type Twang tone… But is it worth upgrading the pick-ups etc, do watch my video on that upgrade video to get a fuller explanation and illustration of the upgraded Debut before and after. Briefly though… unless you can get quality pick-ups at a very good price… I would say it could be a false economy. Playability… that all depends on what you are use to playing? Out of the box - its pretty nice… On the upgrade model I sanded the back of the neck and that helped a lot to get a better feel. If you wanted to go further… then rolling off the edges of the fretboard is an easy job and really makes a difference - you can see a video on how I customise a neck for my Custom Build T-Style guitar here… ruclips.net/video/BFosHko3b0U/видео.html What I would point out is this… the guitar I received needed a proper set-up as there was string buzz and string choking higher up the neck. Also, the action was far too high and the strings were pretty poor. After setting it up better (still needs a tweak hear and there) with a decent set of strings it was much nicer to play. Again, it depends on what you play - if you need to play all over the neck… it will likely need a good set-up Concluding remarks… yes it’s a decent enough guitar to write and record with, and you will get the Telecaster sound. If I was starting out or on a tight budget, I would be pleased with it (As long as it had a set-up). I apologise if I have said anything you already know about. As I’m not aware of how long you have been playing and what your actual goals are, it can be difficult to answer more specifically. Hope that helps and you find the videos helpful…. Don’t hesitate to comment or ask further questions… always happy to try and help if I’m able… Regards: Stu
@@StuGuitarChannel great info to consider, thanks!

Nice up grades. I did the same to a build I recently did. I used Alnico 5 pickups, changed out the saddles to bronze, and a black pickguard on a deep red body.
Thanks Tim - Being able to easily flip out parts is certainly one of the great things you can do with Fender style instruments. It's just a pity we can only buy sets of Fender pick-ups here in the UK making mixing things up more expensive to do... regards Stu
@StuGuitarChannel You don't have Temu over there? They're a Chinese online company that has a lot of parts. I've actually found some decent stuff on there. They have a lot of budget guitars, parts of all prices, but mostly Asian made guitars under $500
@@TimRock1269 Hi Tim, thanks for that... yes we can get Temu here, I did have a cursory glance at what's available but when I started my Tele style Custom Build I preferred to go to the various outlets that I'm familiar with in my neck of the woods. I have a good relationship with some of the stores here and I can usually manage to get some good discounts. Without doubt, there are so many great options available now for anyone wanting to put together their own guitar and its really good to see so many folks having a go at doing that... regards: Stu
I like the pickguard choice. Pearl gives the guitar that vintage look.
Hi Tim - Thanks for chipping in. Yes, I bought a few pickguards from Kaish Music which is available on Amazon. They were around £10.00 each, so a lot cheaper than the Fender original plates. The quality is very good and it's certainly a cheaper way to give a Strat or Tele a new look without breaking the bank. I went onto fully upgrade that Squier guitar in this video - ruclips.net/video/x0cxLtTouJs/видео.html - which was just for a bit of fun.
