I burnish leather skived down to 2oz, comparing two burnishing agents
Просмотров 3352 месяца назад
The first burnishing agent was Tokonole. The second was martins mix. Tokonole worked great and I’d recommend that for anyone burnishing edges this thin. Martins mix, which I actually normally recommend a lot, did not work very well here. Three challenges with in the video and for super thin leather 1. It made the edges too damp, taking longer than normal 2. It was difficult to control and the a...

Raw and Uncut Scene I Used in My First Edge Glider Ad
Просмотров 7404 месяца назад
This is the raw, uncut version of the scene from my Edge Glider ad that some have questioned. The leather in the video is a piece of black leather that has already been beveled. I chose black leather with good lighting to really highlight the smooth, formed edge that the burnisher can achieve. While you can’t feel the smoothness through the video, the lighting helps visually showcase the qualit...
The bookbinding burnisher-will the edge glider burnish 1-2oz (0.6-1.0mm) thick leather?
Просмотров 3824 месяца назад
I had a question from someone curious about the Edge Glider I'm launching. She mostly does bookbinding and the leather is 1-2oz or 0.6mm-1.0mm thin. Here I tested it out. The results: 1. Your fingers do a pretty good job 2. The Edge Glider does give it a smoother feel If you're interested in the edge glider, check out get.edge-glider.com/3 to pre-order it before the launch!
Introducing the world's first tabletop edge burnisher for finishing thin leather edges #leathercraft
Просмотров 4205 месяцев назад
This is the world's first tabletop edge burnisher, machined entirely out of brass. It has 4 precision polished grooves that work with any leather thinner than 3mm or 4oz. Because the tool works with the leather laying flat on the table, work-holding is easy and you can achieve excellent consistency of the formed edge so much faster and easily. For anything thicker than 3mm just continue using y...

To my surprise, I had a bunch of subscribers, lots of comments, AND there was still some steady new traffic. So people must be interested in making their own clicker dies. Really cool! I am giving this a try as soon as I get the material shipped in.
Aight where's the link lol
It's like on Kickstarter right now ! www.kickstarter.com/projects/kit/the-edge-glider-tabletop-burnishing-unlocked
Sorry but what ??
Expensive wood will soon be useful tool.
Hey you can make these on a 3D printer for a significant cost savings. I'd also look into a patent or copyright as your design could be remade.
Thanks for the ideas! I did patent this and I do offer a variant in Nylon 12 that is 3D printed and finished with vapor smoothing.
$150 🤣💩 For that money you could just buy a burnishing machine. Or just wrap some sand paper around a piece of leather and rub it against a piece of wood jfc a sucker is born every minute.
Dudes 3d printing and cncing snake oil hahahaha.
What about hacksaw blades? They are steal and would take an edge well
Can this do 8/9 oz? It would be nice if the tool could be rotated so each corner could do different thicknesses. Very neat piece you have there. Kudos to you!
Yes I'm working on a midweight one for 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, and 12oz ranges (works with +/-1oz)
If you have any machine shops near you they may be willing to give you one of the their used bandsaw blades when they change them. They can also tell you how they would form it to the shape you want.
Tried to find the kickstarter, couldn't. Help, I want one!
@ericscave it's not live yet, but we're planning to launch mid-October! Make sure you subscribe to our email list so you don't miss out on the early bird pricing at get.edge-glider.com/3 !
were can i buy that ?
@tazo1jd we're launching on kickstarter mid-October, so if you want to be sure to get the best pricing and in on the first production runs of this tool sign up at get.edge-glider.com/3 !
I use a lot of soft & thinner leather. How does this work for softer, more pliable leather. I’m imagining it might not be as easy to use due to how much softer the leather is.
That’s one of the advantages of keeping the leather flat on the table while burnishing. You can use your fingers or a ruler or something to keep the softer leather from bunching up while burnishing. This allows you to get way more controlled friction and finish those edges faster.
@@hapticwallets thank you! How do I reserve 1? also, when can I expect delivery?
Need one! Is there a link I can buy this tool?
You can reserve it at get.edge-glider.com/3 ! Im planning to launch on kickstarter mid-October
I like the ease of use, but $100 for that is a hard sell for me.
Thanks for the honesty! I get it, it's not a tool for everyone. I'm planning to make the Edge Glider in the USA, with high-quality materials. There is a lot of innovation, design, and precision that goes into making the Edge Glider-the end result is an incredibly useful tool, for those that need it.
I thought most clicker dies were made from steel rule.
They usually are made from either 2pt or 3pt steel rule. A band saw knife blade is probably closer to what a 1pt steel rule die would be and something that could potentially shaped with hand tools when annealed.
Butchers have bandsaws they have Hobart bandsaw boneless blades. These will bend and strong. I think they're just right. Maybe ask the butchers for one that they're going to throw away?
I want one, I'm making a thin leather wallet and this would be perfect!
Awesome! Check out get.edge-glider.com/2 if you want to reserve one. I'm hoping to have these shipped out before EOY.
Is this the tool you working on for 3 years?
Yes! You can learn more about the pre-launch here: get.edge-glider.com/2
Why not heat it first , then bend it , then heat it again and quench it to regain hardness?
This worked! I went and tested it and it was about 4x easier to bend. I didn't try quenching, but even without re-hardening it was able to punch out leather just fine.
Look into old clock springs too!
I'm here because I was really confused by the video title 😅
@@awldune hahahah
Me too.
Check out mini universal benders, they're vice-mounted benders for wire and narrow bar stock. You can get quite good control on the bends but there can be some limitations for more intricate shapes. They're usually around $30-40.
Have a like man, best of luck with your channel. I went looking for good leatherworking tutorials a while back, and couldn't find any good videos to teach an idiot beginner. Would be nice to have more of them on the platform
I do plan to have a lot of tutorial videos here, especially around finishing veg-tanned leather edges. I'm planning to release some of my minimalist design templates too and have explainer videos. One of my designs doesn't have any stitching and is what I use for absolute beginners in my 90 minute classes I teach in Hoboken, NJ.
If you have a blowtorch, you could anneal the saw blade before bending and then re-harden it once you've formed it. As the parts are quite small this would be easy to do.
That's a great idea! Honestly I bet you could get away with not even re-hardening the spots you used the blowtorch to soften on bends.
My god, why don’t you sell these anymore!?!?!
They're pretty tough to make mostly. I still want to bring them back or something like it.

@@Samiscool I was thinking about it for awhile but it might be better to start with the plans on this. Perhaps I’ll draft them up if someone wants them…
@@hapticwallets good idea. good luck
That's a relatively clean workbench. No empty space on mine, stuff stacked a foot high.
Hahha I’ve been there many times. I’ve been putting it into boxes when I need to have a clean desk lately. Now I’ve got a bunch of my stuff scattered in boxes :/
@@hapticwallets Organized tools/parts into labeled boxes. After digging through 10 boxes looking for that tool/part but still not finding it. Easier to buy part/tool to fix problem. The part/tool will always show up weeks later, when you're looking for something else.

@@hapticwallets I would very much love to hear what this is. My own use-case here is homebrew gaming components - it turns out that making custom cardboard tokens and cards is surprisingly non-trivial
Seeing the “April 2018” in the title and that you’re referring to in the past tense. What ended up happening to the idea? I checked out your Etsy store to see if it was there or a feature offered on any of the available models but didn’t see it (maybe it’s on The Money Wallet? I read the description but didn’t see mention of it there either)
I'm going to upload more recent videos of this wallet soon. But you can see the final product on my instagram instagram.com/p/BpcrVCBBrWy/
cool
Looks like a promising idea 👍
Clever idea I will definitely use! Thanks! …d
You can make a vegan version of your wallet as well. It's called a rubber band. I couldn't resist.
hahah yes -- but it won't patina very well.
Oh wow, I see that this video was made 2 yrs ago, it's quite interesting, but have you done anymore videos pertaining to this type of thing. I was wondering, I have an embosser, I put plastic folders into it, it has awesome imbedded designs on them, I usually made greeting cards & tons of other things, but I am wanting to use my embosser to cut strips of faux leather to make bracelets. So, I won't have to keep cutting them all out with scissors that is taking way too much time, have you ever thought of making something like this? I'd imagine it can't be too thick, as it has to go thru the embosser, please get back to me on this, I'd love to hear back from you about your steel die bender & anything else that you have invented, thanks.
Cool idea embossing plastic folders. Regarding some ideas you might try -- there's a really cheap 45mm rotary cutter blade you can pick up at walmart. You might be able to attach this loosely (so that it rolls with the leather being cut) or statically to your embosser to cut the leather while you emboss it.
I used to braze large dies for cutting synthetic fabric. Brazing is less prone to cracking than welds and easily melted for repairs (these were high volume production dies for the long-defunct Eden Toy Company). If you make larger dies for heavier cuts a small oxy-acetylene torch is quite handy.
That's a great idea -- would definitely try that out if I get back to this.
Neat idea!
Thanks!
Do you make custom clicker dies for people? TIA
No, I was more looking for an middle step between hand cutting everything and purchasing a professionally made clicker die. As a hobbyist, this would be a pretty useful in-house capability.
Turn your two pieces of angle iron around the other way
Definitely! They were very weak in my first iteration.
There is better profit in the tools than there is in the project you are creating!
Have you no die makers in your area who serve the packaging industry with dies for there die presses ? Surely they would knock you some designs up for next to nothing from old stock rule.
I'm not sure but I'd love to have a local connect for this. How would I find them?
Reverse your die on your machine so that your machine is not in the way
hi i am a professional die/knife bender i can produce all shapes and sizes of blade from 23.80-100mm high blade if this is any help to anyone
Your contact, please.
I had to go to a Canadian belt buckle company just to get a silver buckle made. American companies have became delusional with all the government handouts. These days you have better results making your own dies yourself! In my leather Hobbie I use a 3ton press and a hydrolic press to do some of my leather work. I am not spending thousands on a machine that a simple harbor freight 2 hundred dollar press will do.
Quizás es muy obvio lo que diré pero creo que tú troquel cortara más fácilmente si le sacas filo. Excelente aporte para quienes queremos hacer nuestros propios troqueles.
I assume life took over and prevented you from making more videos about this, but it would be really great to see any progress you may have made even if it's only in a short or two. Regardless, thanks for making this video!
Life definitely took over for awhile but I'm getting back into it. I never got around to building out a version 2 of this. The real challenge and weak point is the plywood I used to hold angle iron. As you'd expect, the plywood wasn't able to hold the angle iron at a 90* angle and this caused the steel rule to bend oddly so it wasn't flat.
@@hapticwallets Hi, what is the exact name of the push tool , am searching here india can't find it
@@Csb66let me know if you find out
Piece of advice when using an angle grinder or circular saw never wear gloves like that. They will get snagged/caught on the blade and drag your entire hand in there and will do so with such force you can’t pull it out on time due to the gloves being pretty strong. I know people who have lost their hand and fingers from an accident like that.
You do realize you need to heat treat the dies right? I definitely don’t think this is good enough for leather.
The steel rule I purchased already has the edges heat treated and sharpened.
thanks for good instruction video. i have a question about cutting blade. where did you buy the cutting blade for clicker die? i can't find any sotre to buy it.
I purchased about 10 3' steel rule dies on ebay for about $60. Honestly it was great to have this around and I made quite a few small cutters for leather, such as corner cutters etc.
