Roads to Power is Reviving CK3 (Full Review)
Crusader Kings 3 has had an absolutely wild month, with Roads to Power giving the player base one of its largest spikes in recorded history. The question still remains - is it worth it? How fun is landless gameplay? What are the positives and negatives of the expansion? After playing through several campaigns and numerous adventurers, I wanted to give my full, honest review and talk about where the game is headed next.

    The idea that old civilisations have to die and get replaced by new ones isn't even the reality. Many ancient civilisations have stood the test of time and still with us today - Egypt, Iran, China, India, Greece, Japan, etc. Notice some of these have had multiple Golden Ages and keep coming back strong even after they've been down.

    Civ 4 & 5 were Great. 6 was down hill being alright & I suspect 7 will be lower on the ranking. Oh well we got 2 brilliant games & one goodish one as the cartoony direction with various changes that detracted from the series intended premise.

    The fact most of the “innovations” Civ VII presents are just “stuff sees in other games that failed to steal the thunder” gives me very bad feeling for the future of 4X. Humankind failed in every aspect of being good, despite coming from the devs of endless legends who seemed to understand much more on how to make an alternative 4X. These changes denote a complete lack of new ideas, to sell the “copied” as new. And let’s not forget I’ve yet to see any mention of religion. The fact they gutted out Hotseat gives me a clear idea of why: they are tired of balancing things out, and religion is either very annoying or very exploitable in VI. Overall, the message they are sending is that this is a game born of tiredness and should not exist.

    civ 7 looks like its too close to humankind. with all its flaws humankind was different, and gave a new take on a genre, and now the established series just copies some of them. like wtf, humankind wasnt even successful, nowhere a civ-killer, just make your own game, fix the mechanics people hate, and have your own ideas in it. how is THE 4X game series copying what others made

    If they wanted to do something where your civilisation why not make it so your civilisation evolves logically, say rather than start as the english the player starts as the Anglo-saxons who in real life evolved into the english or have the romans start as the latins in the ancient era

  • @AIRGEDOK

    The central conceit of Civilization was, 'what if X civilization lasted the test of time and didn't die off?' Is this realistic? No but this has ALWAYS been the central conceit of the series and let us play out this fantasy. For Sid Meier he imagined this with Ancient Egypt. Civ 7 takes the entire central conceit of the series and throws it out the window. and this was an idea that was done and failed already with a game that didn't catch on. When you break the foundational premise of your series you are going to create an uncomfortable feeling about the series and people will start to dislike it many without really knowing exactly why.

    Civilisation used to be immense. But something I noticed creeping into the game ideology and play mechanic was a bizarre 'cultural sensitivity' obsession. It's an irreverent game, not a history textbook. So you will see some cultures surpassing what would be their 'natural' technological and innovative qualities. My point being, Civ developers want the game to present cultures as being as 'historically sensitive' and authentic as possible, equality and progressive inclusion, but then they also will have Lady Six Sky of the Maya utterly dominate Rome when it come to military excellence or out industrialise the United Kingdom - which is just ahistorical. Also, there is bizarrely next to ZERO development regarding England in particular, we've had Queen Elizabeth from the off, a slight amendment but nothing else, no new rulers. What about King Alfred the Great or Richard the 'Lion Heart' of Aquitaine. Civ developers have had to utterly downplay and reduce the importance of European scientific, militaristic and cultural excellence in a bizarre effort to 'standardise' all cultures as being equal in all things and yet they also make lesser historical figures over powered in an effort to compete with their more illustrious counterparts. It is a game, so make it such. You don't need 'sensitive' historical depictions of cultures deemed 'oppressed'. It's a game.

    Additionally, historical eras don't have huge, clearly defined endpoints. It's a construct. Nor is the end of an age necessarily defined by conflict and disaster. In much the same way, conflict doesn't necessarily mark the end of an era. Economic collapse and war have at times only moved humanity in a minimal direction- for example, the collapse of the stock market in 1929 did indeed change things economically and culturally, but most people wouldn't consider it an era in the same vein of the transition between Middle Ages and Renaissance.

  • @jtreidno1
    @jtreidno1 9 дней назад

    So changing culture would be a realistic dynamic...but it should be based on contact with other cultures. Iroquois culture, for example, changed as a result of contact with European peoples. Romans adopted different military tactics based on their wars with the Spaniards. Arabic Muslims adapted Roman baths due to war in Spain. Romans adopted beards after getting their butts kicked by Germanic peoples. Civilizations don't just randomly adopt cultural traditions of people they've never met. That's not possible. An interesting way to do it would be to make it the result of cultural domination a la cultural victories in Civ 5 or 6.

    Those devs are extremely lazy and do not add any flavor to the content they release. The RDP mechanic is awesome but looks totally stale and repetitive without any flavor... It is a shame. CK3 is a bad GSG cause the AI is terrible and it is a bad RP game cause it is too mcuh repetitive. It is insane to see a 4X game like Old World having more events than CK3... with hundreds of new events released every year. It is a game where the core gameplay is 4X and still events are more varied than CK3's...

    I did not appreciate the civilization swap in Humankind. One of the reason is the the AI deoukd seem to take the civilizations first and leave you with the ones you didn’t want. The cities ended up looking like an ugly Disneyland theme park with a weird mishmash of cultural buildings. If Civilization does keep this mechanic I hope it is implemented in a much better way.

    While I have some smaller gripes with some ERE-based topics (The Patriarch and Senate having no role) and some flavour about uprisinings and claimants. It is still the best DLC to date, even better than T&T. My takeaways from this Chapter are: Let Core Packs simmer for a while. They need more work. Things like adventurers keep the ball rolling.

    They should've allowed nations to swap leaders instead of civilizations. A leader dies, every age, and is replaced by someone WITHIN the nation.
