    As a systems engineer and having worked along side many devops teams I see a couple issues. One the orgs I have been part of put too much on them when we are still there and are pretty capable of helping with these tasks. Two way too many devops team will do all this work and not really ask for our help and then complain about what they have on their plate. Devops teams should be working along side the Saas teams and admins to make this all work and so no one is doing more than they have too.

Looking to get into development and data engineer side of things. I'm happy to continue in a support role within the cloud to start though, like a support engineer would be great I enjoy helping users. It's so nice not having to deal with physical infrastructure. I've been dealing with it for YEARS.

    • @homebrewhenry
      @homebrewhenry 15 дней назад

      The responsibilities are very similar. “Cloud Engineer” in one company may be equivalent to “DevOps Engineer” in another. Just depends on how they decide to advertise the role. Broadly though, Cloud Engineers will be more familiar with a particular cloud platform vs DevOps eng. DevOps may be more familiar with other things like CICD. But there’s a lot of overlap.

    Great video! Your video should get more views. I have a few questions: If I choose AWS, which programming language should I learn? I'm a 37-year-old help desk tech aiming to transition into development or DevOps. My workplace uses Microsoft and C#. Should I stick with Azure since it's offered at my job, or should I pursue AWS? Which Azure certification would you recommend?

    • @homebrewhenry
      @homebrewhenry 12 дней назад

      I’d recommend learning Python. Although, this depends on the company that you’re looking to work for and what language their codebase is in. Python is the most widely used for general DevOps/cloud related scripting tasks. Can’t comment on any particular Azure certs as I haven’t done them myself. But I’d suggest taking a look at Microsoft’s suggested roadmap.

    What really bothers me about DevOps is that it's not uncommon to hire a "junior engineer" with nothing to their name but an AWS cert, who is then delegated authority over seasoned and experienced engineers and administrators to build things that they don't understand. The problem with DevOps is that it's a shortcut that exists to handle widespread inexperience and incompetence. It has not been proven worthy of this purpose.

I always tell my friends in networking that they should reinvent themselves as soon as possible since the legacy network engineer is going to dissappear soon (only big organizations with private DC will have jobs for them). • @satysin630

    DevOps isn't an "entry level" job. It's where you go after you've been something like a junior developer and/or junior sysadmin moving up the career ladder. It is more of a mid-to-senior position just like how SRE isn't an entry level position either, it is where you go as you move up from a junior position. Nothing wrong with that. After all you don't get your MD and skip being a junior doctor and become a consultant or registrar either. I was doing DevOps before we called it DevOps. I was a hybrid developer and sysadmin within the company. Then we moved to cloud services rather than on-prem or self-managed data centre based servers. I was a senior system administrator and then a Solution Architect for a large blue chip company when we reorganised the titles and we renamed positions to the more modern titles of SRE and DevOps Engineer, etc. So the reality is a DevOps Engineer/SRE is the "new" title of a Senior System's Administrator/Integration Specialist with production ownership and responsibilities, etc. Not things you would put on a junior employee straight out of college.

    • @naordaniel
      @naordaniel 2 месяца назад

      Very true

    • @nestharus
      @nestharus 2 месяца назад

      Huh? With tools like Terraform and Wing there's no reason why a junior engineer can't be part of the devops team. From all the internal tools you develop for product teams to managing infrastructure junior devs can contribute to all of that. As far as prod is concerned all teams are responsible for prod. Devops is just one of many teams. Unless you're doing a large complicated manual process (why) then you can easily have junior devs just like with any other team.

    • @satysin630
      @satysin630 2 месяца назад

      @@nestharus Oh for sure you could have a "Junior DevOps Engineer" role. And I have seen such positions from time to time. However generally when you see a DevOps position advertised they're looking for someone with experience at mid-level or usually senior level. Someone who has a few years of real world use of Terraform, Anisible and development in Golang, etc. building deployed solutions. These are things you just don't really find in a fresh graduate and so we see more junior positions as either system administrators or developers with some cross over to develop DevOps skills. It's not a knock at graduates of course, it is just that "DevOps" isn't all that well defined across the industry. Many companies (and by that I mean management) don't fully understand (or care much) the difference between dev and ops sides of things, to them it is all just technical stuff with strange words like git and terraform and CI/CD. Whereas they have a bit of a better understanding of "software developer" and "system administrator" roles. When I first started working in IT back in 2001 DevOps didn't exist. There was no "cloud". All our servers were either in a dedicated server room on site or in a data centre. Many things transitioned to VMs yet remained either on-prem or in a DC. Then things moved to the cloud and a whole new skill set of rapid deployment and scalability emerged as hardware was no longer a hard limit that required speccing up, ordering, delivery, setup and deployment. It became a budget meeting then a few clicks in AWS (or whatever you use) and you could scale away to your hearts content without having to worry about buying a dozen new servers (massive CapEx hit) and all the baggage that comes with ownership of the hardware. If things change you are left with hardware doing nothing whereas doing if things change you just scale back down. Anyway I am writing an essay now so I will stop 😁 I do agree with you is my point, it is just that the industry and specifically management hasn't really caught up fully as DevOps can mean many different things in different companies and so when a company says they want a DevOps engineer what they're (usually) saying is they want a senior person with a lot of experience to save them money and build them more reliable infrastructure. These are things they don't feel comfortable hiring a fresh grad for but rather someone with a good 3-5 years experience under their belt.
