@@user-th6rh8zp3t you’re gonna wanna check back in for my new video coming out in a few days 😌
Yeah I hear you on trying gear first, had to take loss on a couple pieces, which I regret. As far as new gear, I try to rarely add new gear to my set up, there’s the learning curve aspect, then you have to fit it into your already established workflow, without it becoming a door stop.
totally! Especially when it comes to more robust analog investments like consoles, summing mixers, I/O etc. Definitely can be more of an obstacle than anything!
I worked 8 years only on these before Upgrading 😂
thats wild!!! you know exactly what these things are capable of and also where they falter! After years of working on them, I just can't seem to get them out of the studio! 😂
Hey man could you do an Video explaining What to Look out for in speakers past 2000bucks Range for a pair? ❤would be nice to hear your Perspektive
I most certainly can! I think this is a very relevant topic to most of us in the audio game! thanks for the suggestion 🙏
right now i’m trying to upgrade my vocal chain purely for personal use. the UAD Sphere DLX/Apollo setup i have right now isn’t cutting it for the studio-grade quality i’m looking for. The upgraded vocal chain I’m looking into is the Lauten Atlantis -> BAE 1073 DMP -> Neumann MT 48. for pop, r&b, hip-hop, and indie/alternative vocals, do you think this is a solid upgrade?
That’s close to my vocal chain and same genre Atlantis>Bae 1073>Avalon 737>Motu 828. If you can’t get it done with that chain, it’s not the gear. I’m not familiar with the MT, but make sure if you’re spending over $1k, you get a decent number of inputs/ outputs, whether you think you need them or not.
Honestly, the sphere and Apollo setup is definitely pretty good. Are you recording at 96k? I would recommend a stereo analog preamp and using the Sphere with that and seeing how you like that first and be sure to record at 96k, it will help open up the sound more and keep the recording flatter, perhaps aiding some of the sonic issues you're finding with it! Also, which Apollo do you have?
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR I’m using the Apollo Twin X Duo (first gen), and I’ve only been recording at 48k, will definitely have to try 96! The biggest issue I’ve been having is the vocal sounding really digital, lacking the 3D depth/width, and high end openness that I want. Any recommendations for a stereo preamp? I think they have a stereo version of the BAE 1073 DMP I was looking at
@ what genre of music do you make? What’s your voice type and range (tenor, baritone, etc.)? Do you have a loud delivery or a really quiet voice?
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Mainly more modern sounding genres like pop, r&b, hip-hop, indie/alternative. Not sure exactly what vocal type but I think Tenor, and I usually sing pretty softly
Great Information, I did alot of bad investments trying to chase what i seen on youtube, took the time to learn the gear I have and probably would never invest in anymore gear lol question what type of camera are you using?? I'm about to start recording more videos on mu channel and like the quality you have
I'm glad my story resonated with you and thank you! As for my camera, this video was shot with a FujiFilm XS20 camera and a Sigma 18-50 X mount lens. I actually like it a lot more than the Sony camera's we got around here!
The biggest mistakes I see is following the hype, and buying cheap cables.
@@RainAstonIV yes! Cables! BIG thing for me too actually, I’m so glad you mentioned them, I make a video on this! Thank you 🙏
I’ve had the SAME experience. When I moved to my atcs I started using a lot less outboard, and very selected and very specific. I could get away with whatever plugin basically, now that I can hear
@@lacollastudio2166 I’m really glad to hear your monitor upgrade is providing you with the detail you need to make confidence decisions! Plug-ins are more powerful than they seem until we can hear what they do!
Am very interested in this RME converter, so thanks for doing this. But can I ask how are you hooking it up to your audio interface? I have an Apollo twin duo, which has no Adat output only input and so want to know the best way to do so, or if it’s even possible? Thanks in advance.
@@riasure I actually usually just use the ADI as a standalone unit! When I want to record, I usually will just switch converters and if I want to be more seemless, I’ll run adat out of the prism Lyra into my Apollo to use the latency free plugin console from UAD and use an aggregate device I setup to use both the Apollo and RME ADI to playback and record simultaneously! It’s a little complicated for sure to set up but it maximizes and utilizes only the best parts of all my tools! There’s a way to route your system accordingly as well but picking which situation to go with depends on the use case for sure! Do you record vocals mostly and do you use outboard gear as well to mix/master?
@ thanks so much for coming back to me. I didn’t think of setting up an aggregate device, as I previously tried that in a former setup, but it proved to be a little clunky, so I ditched that way of working😄. I only record vocals and so that’s why the Apollo is a good fit in that regard and I am working otherwise fully in the box with no outboard gear. I do record some external synths but that’s easy enough to do via midi etc…it’s just trying to integrate the Apollo into this potential purchase. I wanna think ahead and not come unstuck only to discover I have overlooked anything essential. So appreciate any advice you can give. Btw I have been watching loads of your videos recently-they’ve been very informative.
@ I’m really glad to hear the videos are helping in any way, thank you! And as far as incorporating your apollo into your workflow, I think a great compromise would be buying the RME ADI DAC FS. It’s a wonderful playback device that you can use along with your Apollo and creating an aggregate device using the DAC fs would actually be much simpler considering it doesn’t have any input, it’s just for playback quality on your monitors and headphones or for sending analog signal to outboard. In your case, if you plan on staying in the box, this solution could serve you well, provide great quality, and save you money! Hope this helps and be sure to demo or try any devices before committing to the purchase! 🙏
4:12 This just took a decision off my shoulders, or confirmed what I was leaning towards. I love your practical approach.
@@josuastangl7140 I’m glad I was able to help 🙏 thank you!
Calling yourself a Saviour is pretty fucking arrogant.. dont care what you have to say dick……
Definitely relate to this video. For me it was the complete opposite. I knew I wasn’t going to be working on bands. Most of my area is rappers and singers so I purchased things vocal chain specific knowing my audience and workflow…. Great informative video

As a visually impaired person myself the best thing you can do is get a analog board you can do all your projects without looking just my feel. in addition to the board I use a Alesis hd24xr I can do everything by feel. Find a good mastering engineer to to do everything else. Peace.
Don’t spend money on better speakers if your room isn’t treated.
Definitely be sure to treat your room as a baseline for any audio gear investments! I thought this was a given but I pinned a comment about this at the top of the comment section for those who don’t know! Thanks 🙏
Most important is room acoustic and then monitors. Period. If Your acoustics sucks your monitors won't help. If your acoustic is great, you can mix on cheapest PMC and get great results.
Definitely be sure to treat your room as a baseline for any audio gear investments! I thought this was a given but I pinned a comment about this at the top of the comment section for those who don’t know! The cheapest new PMC speaker is still a fanatic speaker as is not necessarily cheap either, but I agree grabbing a smaller PMC monitor will serve any serious engineers very well. Thats why I got my small PMC 6-2s! Thanks for tuning in 🙏
You’re absolutely correct my friend.
I’m not always right, but I try to be! Thank you 🙏
REAL ADVICE

@@BarcodezProduction thanks bro 🙏
Where can I hear your mixes?
@@BarcodezProduction check out my instagram page, linked in the description!
Hey Rayne i think a video about acoustic treatment is due, because alot of ppl dealing with little to no acoustic treatment in there home studios, I think great to decent monitors in an untreated room is just as counterproductive.
I totally take treatment for granted now because of how second nature it is to me when moving spaces and switching monitors or desks! I will definitely think on how to give some good value there, thank you for chiming in on this! 🙏
My budget vocal chain is Shure KSM32, Focusrite ISA ONE PREAMP, Golden Age Comp2A, Klark Teknik EQP-1A Equalizer and Audient id22. I get pretty good results.
@@efrainquin6903 ISA, a huge secret weapon for vocals when paired with Shure mics in general, even the 7B is dope with it too! Great list of gear here, happy you found a dope work flow 🙏
I’d also add that imo the most important thing to invest in is yourself. If that means buying courses or studying or just trail and error, it will be worth it. The gear doesn’t matter as much if you or the source can’t make use of it. An example would be me ig, I heard over and over again that hardware synths were better than software and while I had used hardware before, I wasn’t satisfied so I decided to get a new hardware synth just to realise that it was definitely fun but my skill level wasn’t there and I just got better results with software. And I as a person had different needs than others. Because while people were saying software was too much and distracting, I found the opposite to be true for me. Long story short invest time and potentially money into yourself and your skills and experiences before making any big purchases In my experience
@@anythingsimple1125 I totally agree with this comment and I appreciate you sharing your story here as well, it’s a great one that teaches the important of learning and patience in this insane process of achieving something special in audio 🙏 thanks for taking the time to share this
what camera you using?
@@Platnumbaby I use a three different camera’s for these videos, fujifilm XS-20, Sony A7IV and a Black Magic Pro Cinema Camera. Lately it’s been just the XS-20. We got a commercial production company out here so the film locker is different
@ thanks for the reply
lol. I buy gear cause I can. It is truly a waste but its a hobby like any other for me. I have tons redundancies and I love. No one is digital only, it went through analog and then mixed.
@@Platnumbaby everyone’s got their own gear journey, I just try to help advise anyone trying to make a living off this stuff while also feeling fulfillment from the process - achieving the dream of making dope music to support their family with 🙏 everyone’s got their process for sure!
@ I understand if you have to eat. I am thankful it’s just an expensive hobby of love for me. I just wonder how my wife going to get rid of all this stuff when I am gone. Cause it’s a lot. To be honest it’s scarier that people do this for a living that are not pros. People just don’t won’t to invest in themselves and the prices of gear is ridiculous. I been doing this for over 30 years and the prices have doubled, now that’s crazy.
@ honestly investing is gear is actually a good long term investment but is unfortunately so market dependent. That said, some dudes are getting Grammys mixing in the box. Skrillex does is, Jon Castelli and Teezio are very minimal with they outboard utilization, Andrew Schepps is completely digital but his monitoring setup is like 200K usd. It all depends on the persons needs and the situation but I’m glad you are enjoying your gear! You’re in a great position to be able to afford what you have for sure, thanks for tuning in to the channel 🙏
3:20 i think the oc818 by austrian audio is making a good case
I’d love to try this mic out! I haven’t used it before, how are you liking it and what do you pair it with?
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR i have the 0c18 which is the same but cardioid only. best mic i have ever used on vocals! easily better than the u87 that i had and a bit more detail than the tlm103
@ wow that definitely peaks my curiosity, I gotta get my hands on one to cut some vocals! Sounds like it’s a more open version of the U87 with the clarity of a 103 based on what you said and that is exciting to hear for sure
Headphones>monitors

A lot of what you are hearing in a Vintage Neve from a console that people find "magic" is entropy. There is a lot of dragon chasing when it comes to Preamp coveting. A 1073 is a great design but not a difficult one to approximate. There is nothing exotic in any of them and the implementation of the circuit is almost exact in all of them. Almost all of them do a pretty great job of being almost exact to an original Neve. It's that 1% difference that keeps engineers up all night doing A/B tests searching for "best". I have the bug too. I took an entire weekend White noise testing every DI in here and making notes on pieces of tape stuck to the top of them. Stuff like "-1dB @ 12K" and "4.5k +1.5db". Totally useless. I just grab whichever one is closest when I need one., but I did it. And I'll do it again.
@@kniferideaudio maybe I’m a little neurotic but I definitely hear a different between them all with my own ears, but not a difference that makes or breaks any recording or creation! I find it to be helpful to understand the difference in feeling between the options out there, especially in pursuit of the sound in our heads BUT making sure speakers and monitors aren’t lying to us along with a quality room and DAC will assist in this process greatly so that we aren’t wasting money chasing out tails
Very true
💯💯💯
I agree with you here I went down that buying gear road and it was addictive, but it wasn't needed, with that said I do have a pair of barefoot monitors, and they sound amazing, also I never really used a summing mixer which one would you recommend
@@JdsBleedo I went down that road too brother, it can be a long and expensive road but I’m glad we both got through our gear addictions alive! That said, I really appreciated the RND Orbit summing mixer for about 50 percent of my summing needs. I’ve used the Sigma as well but wasn’t in love there. The SPL mix dream is another really good one. Not a fan of the dangerous summing box either. That’s the extent of experience with summing mixers!
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Thanks!!! the orbit is on sale so i might give it try for 30 days and see if it enhances my sound quality
@@JdsBleedo Please let me know how you like it! I recommend starting using it on drums and and bass lines, amped to hear how it goes!
U87 for Condenser. M88 for Dynamic. You can do almost anything with a M88. I also have a soft spot for KSM32 and 44 which beat our 414's in EVERY shootout we ever did with any client. Sleepers. Give me a high gain low noise preamp, doesn't need to be some transformer balanced vintage Neve or API , Sytek or Blacklion Auteur is great and doesn't break the bank. Quiet and neutral gets you farther than flavor. Just turn it up and go. Comp, Distressor, or I'll even take the RNC or RNLA, which punch far above their weight class.
Almost forgot, I have 4X Oktava Mk012's that get used on every session I ever do. Kinda cant live without them.
@@kniferideaudio this is a really great comment, and as far as mics per mic category, I totally agree with the value in this comment! If I could take the combo I’d definitely consider the same choices! 🙏
Took me 20 years to figure this out. I struggled with mid grade speakers for ever before finally getting something actually good and it changed everything. I wasted a ton of time and money chasing ghosts. Buy good speakers, learn how to treat a room. That's all you need.
@@kniferideaudio couldn’t have said it better myself 🙏 happy you were able to figure everything out bro!

I have the apogee symphony desktop. Had the Apollo x6 before this, apogee is definitely a step up from the Apollo to my ears. Ive considered the Lyra 2 for the I/O and possibly better conversion. The age of the prisms kept me from buying it over the newer offerings. Ive had the mt48 as well. The mt48 was very flat and clean but not as inspiring as my apogee and I feel like the symphony desktop is very close in quality with a slight edge for the AD going to the mt48. I kept the symphony out of all of the ones ive tried. It's the best bang for the buck but also to my ears punch way above its class for everything apogee is giving you. That being said I still would like to compare the Lyra to the symphony desktop just so I can say ive tried , Have you compared both ?
I have definitely compared both and I would definitely say they are very different sounds. The Lyra has more depth and is more natural sounding but the Symphony really sounds musical and awesome as well. I definitely prefer it for recording vocals cause it just sounds “right”. DAC wise, they are very different. The Lyra has more depth and detail but the apogee is more open and 2D sounding as well, I think you’re in a good spot with the Symphony and maybe adding in a DAC or separate dedicated converter to along with it for monitoring and outboard processing
Almost agree. A pro studio is built around the speaker (its physics, precisely); so buy the speaker that you like in test listening anywhere, and double its price to have the real total starting budget incl. room treatment. Yes, speaker + room treatment. DSP room correction is the final ~20 % touch.
@@LipazMusic I agree! I realized should’ve covered room treatment after I posted this video but speakers + room + playback measurements are huge! Thanks for tuning in! 🙏
Excellent advice but with the same emphasis on acoustic room treatment!
@@riktascale4 totally agree! Thank you 🙏
Great content brother - Speakers in a shit room is still shit though, which makes it the most important variable. I'm guessing youre operating under the assumption that your audience knows this, but they may not.

@@Mike_Benz_ I agree definitely, room treatment is key for sure and I definitely appreciate the Alpha lineup from Focal, I used the 65s at length and definitely did a lot of good production work on them. For mixing and mastering I’m not not really a fan of Focals until you get into the higher end stuff and even then, I’d probably lean towards something else unless production is more of a focus personally! But definitely give them a try for yourself and let me know how you feel about them as well 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Thanks, I am considering them as I can get them at a good deal during black Friday but not certain.
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Sorry to hassle, but have you used the Neumann KH-120 II? I feel like they would be a better option as they are a similar price tag, thanks.
@@Mike_Benz_ Don't apologize bro, happy to help! I would definitely highly recommend the Neuman KH120s, both MK1 and MK2. They are great monitors but I didn't recommend them over the Evo's cause they are more than double the price of the Evo's. If you can afford to squeeze up toward the Neumanns, I would definitely go with them 🙏
what you think of amphion two18
To be honest, I haven’t used them enough to confidently say what I want to say about them, but I will try to get a pair in to demo because I’ve been meaning to make a video on them!
So trueee bro I got the CLA 10s their like the newer ns10s and I realized it was hard to make my mix sound good on them but when u do it’s magic 🫨
@@Thereal12prodigy the magic is in the midrange! I’m glad you have a workflow you can trust 🙏
Here´s my take on this topic/where I´m at with it. I fell into all the pitfalls with plugins and bad mixes constantly. Long story short, now I only use stock and a few free plugins for mixing and mastering, and I only use 150 dollar open back headphones for mixing and mastering. And here´s my point, I don´t do surgical EQing, (only hipass)! And I don´t reference my songs on the phone or in the car or any speakers because my channel strip that I came up with all on my own experimenting through years of trial and error ensures that I don´t fuck up anymore. It´s such a joy every time I play my music on different speakers because it sounds amazing! All in the box, just a 2012 macbook pro and my headphones, that´s it! (I don´t even have speakers) Matz Bearpath on Spotify, YT etc. So you know I´m not bullshitting. And, with only headphones, you don´t even need room treatment... Cheers!
@@MatsBP I actually have a video coming out about headphones and wether or not I think they can be used for all steps of the process! Without giving away the content of the video and long story short, I think you’re definitely on the right path and respect that journey fully 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Thank you, cool, FYI I use Sennheiser HD599, I have the 650 too but the low end extension on the 599 is better suited for me. Hipassing the low lows correctly is key, and I use expansion, saturation and harmonic distortion instead of compressing, when I do compress it´s super light, less is more. Same with limiting, never over half of DB, gotta be extra careful with that when it´s all digital.
@ Senheiser has some great headphone options for sure! I’m glad you found a great workflow on them. Sounds like you have spent a lot of time learning them and how to get your desired sound 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR Indeed, I would not wanna use any other pair. Yes I can hear clearer on the 650 in terms of fidelity, but it´s minute, but the bass response weighs it up for me. Appreciate the talk! See you around (:
@ my pleasure bro, thanks for tuning in! 🙏
Soooo true, I started with room acoustics, then onto monitoring., and finally broke down and brought a vocal booth last year. Once you get those things squared away, it’s amazing how much faster you get things done, although I’m still learning, so still not fast enough.
@@CliffMoir that’s incredible bro it sounds like your on a great path and have a wonderful space to craft your sound! 🙏
@ Appreciate that, thanks!
which one do you think is better for vocals?
@@LyricLyricLyricLyric depends on the vocal chain and vocalist! Bae for female vocals and brighter voices as well in my opinion, but the AMS with a U87 and a good compressor sounds great on male vocals!
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR the vocal chain I have is similar to yours (not sure on the microphones u have). MICROPHONES (EITHER TOWNSEND L22 OR C800G) -> cl1b hardware male vocals. UAD-> WITH NEVE 1084 PRESET(want to buy hardware) I know the order which I named it would be different once I buy the hardware just cause there is no actual hardware preamp I have so I just go straight to the compressor for the preamp ,does the vocal range matter? such as countertenor etc.
@ the range is somewhat important for sure, what genre of music are you making?
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR hard to say cause I try to experiment as much as possible but rnb/alternative/hiphop. Those I would say are the most common, but it changes everyday based on feeling
@ then I’d probably lean toward the AMS 1073 in that case bro, if you can demo that and see if it fits - I think you’ll be happy with it considering everything else you have already 👌
Don’t forget to treat your room too gang! Room treatment is a given but for those who don’t know, even a little goes a long way! 🙏
This.
How little? What's a good starting point?
@@MadelnMachines it’s really hard to say without seeing your space. I’d say that if you don’t have good startup capital, put 50% of what do you have into your room treatment. Otherwise, utilize thick blankets, mattresses, pillows, and anything else you can find and use at home to start DIY treating your space! Treat your space as best you can until what’s coming out of your speakers sounds more focused and until the reverb and reflection points in your space are almost muted. Then focus on the corners of your room if you find the low end to be a bit muddy still. The answer to your question is nuanced for sure but hope this is helps!
it's funny you mentioned that because I was mixing on some Yamaha HS80m's and while mixing a harsh sounding vocal and come to the conclusion that is was the sound of the Tweeter that I was fighting, not the vocal itself. I love my Yamaha HS80m's monitors. I got lucky and got some free Event 2020 BAS. Hearing the difference and realized the cheaper but still great HS80m's was the reason my vocals didn't sound good with them. The distortion on the HSm's was too aggressive for the job. But to each their own, still gonna set them up when I have more room for them.
@@rusj5273 honestly, it’s so hard to part with monitors that you know so well and have served you in many ways. I had a similar experience with Focal Alphas and even still, I find myself wanting to find room for the pair because they still did a lot of good for me when I had them. Thanks for sharing your experience with us bro! 🙏
@@RAYNETHESAVIOUR For Sure I Love Them and will continue to use them. Space is always the Biggest Problem we as artist and engineers have to work with and/or figure out how to deal with.
Your Channel is really underrated 🔥
@@TeezoTarantino thank you bro I appreciate this 🙏
Hmm no mention of room acoustics that's no 1
@@lj9732 I realize I should have at least mentioned it in this video too 😂 thanks bro!
