A New cEDH Banlist?
Today I'm talking about a new project I'm a part of, The cEDH Rules Committee. I'm discussing what this is, how it came to be, and the ideas behind potentially changing the format with the community. I go over the initial banlist people have seen, the members of this group, and how we hope to shape the format with players.
Let me know down below how you feel about the cEDH RC!

    cEDH should NOT have a separate banlist. It'll split the cEDH community in two, and its small enough as is. It'll kill the "format".

    Lol, if you are talking about banning study, I am out fam. I don't play cedh tornaments anyway so this probaly won't effects me however i could imagine edh players being annoyed by a seperate ban list of cards if they do play in tornaments. Are you only targeing blue draw what about libaray or black market connections or any other enchantment that give draw power for 3 or less mana. Cedh is about fast mana and draw power and the abilty to win consistently. Why are we attacking the draw power and the low cost ways to win?

    This is just a transparent attempt at a power grab. If you want to create a new format, fine, but don't call it cEDH. An alternate ban list is *not* cEDH, it's a new format entirely. Do what Conquest did and don't pretend like you have authority that you don't.

    Now I don’t really agree with rhystic study I think that card to be looked at for blue would be thassa. Granted this would change the entire format, turbo would not be as fast but Nether would some of the other decks. I just find it to be the feels bad win con that is also the hardest to handle. I don’t think rhystic is the issue struck because you can be responsible and pay the one unlike thassa that says win the game and is the main win con you see that can win by peoples turn 1 and turn zero for others.

    Hi Matt, I'm really happy to see you addressing this on your channel and just want to give my opinion on this topic. Please consider not doing this and encouraging others not to do this, I think for the long term health of the format it is not time for a CEDH RC. The format is still very young and growing and it needs space to continue to grow. Regardless of intention or the best of attempts not to cause a fracture in the community it seems impossible to avoid at this time and is a very real issue as you have seen fit to address those concerns as well. The community is not large enough or accessible enough for most players for it to have this kind of major shake up and schism without fallout, while it isn't guaranteed to cause issues for everyone, it is guaranteed to cause issues for some. I hold this opinion without any bias towards the proposed changes or potential members of a CEDH RC. I think that eventually a Rules Committee will be a valuable and necessary part of the CEDH community and CEDH tournaments but it is premature at this time. I truly want what is best for the community and believe that you and others do as well, so please feel free to reach out for more specific feedback or reasoning. Thank you for time, accepting feedback, and for all your prior content.

    I don't understand why people bother so much with RS, just play 1 mana behind and your opponent will not draw. It's so manageable. RS is a balanced card. It's not because it's the pinnacle of a color that should be banned..... Otherwise we are opening doors to ban Force of Will, Deadly Rollick, Deflecting Swap, Demonic Tutor etc etc... those are just GOOD cards on their color identity and will be used HEAVILY in most decks that run those colors. they are not unbalancing anything

  • @Joeled_Lotus
    @Joeled_Lotus День назад

    Im all for the unbanning part, except that I'm missing both Golos and Hullbreacher to be unbanned as well, but I'm not for banning of Rhystic study. Rhystic is a power house, that much we can agree on, and like many other cards in the format it offers a way to win just like Dockside. But just banning Rhystic and not other power house (like Dockside) will just make blue more weak than before. Blue is the color who is supposed to draw cards and control the game and rhystic does just that. It controls turboplayer that play a lot of stuff during their turn and banning rhystic will just open up more players to play turbo decks, especially those decks that have card draw in the command zone like BlueFarm or Mardu colors with Tymna. Other blue control deock without card draw om the command zone would just die becuase they are way to slow. I am a BlueFarm turbo player myself and my deck don't mind the banning of rhystic because I prefer playing ad nauseum, Necropotence or Necrodominance turn 1-2. Rhystic is just another way for my deck to adapt into the midrange / control plan if needed. If rhystic is banned I would totally discard those plans and go all in turbo every match because I will not expect to see a Rhystic study from my opponents and I will have an easier way to win myself. And thats why I think banning rhystic is a bad idea because every game would literally become like that, everyone try to win turn 1-2 with Ad naus / Necro plan. I also think that blue turbo player also gets an extra boost by unbanning Gifts ungiven, literally make it an easy swap from Rhystic to Gifts ungiven and thus boosting the ad naus /necro plan with another way to tutor for the underworld breach win. With that said I am all for unbanning Gifts ungiven, really wanna try the card, but I think banning Rhystic is gonna be a mistake.

    So what's going to happen when another group pops up and claims to be another cEDH RC? Are we going to be expected to follow their arbitrary rules changes, too? I appreciate you guys showing the care for the format that you do, but the reason the concept of the RC works is because they've always been there. People follow WOTC's banlist for Standard because they have to. With EDH being unofficial, the only way standardized rules work is having something EVERYONE follows and respects (except for rule zero, which is only accepted because of the RC allowing it) so trying to add stuff in brings a lot of issues. I play in tourneys and I get where you're coming from, but everything has a meta and ours is diverse. This runs a HUGE risk of affecting small shops by random shop owners picking and choosing with their cEDH banlists.

    While I do think a banlist specific for cEDH would be a great idea, I don't get what this proposal is aiming for. I see 4 contentious points: - Rhystic Study: I'd thought Study is fine in cEDH and, if it's not, what about Mystic Remora? - Fastbond: this is dangerous, it could ruin the meta (after all, it's banned in Legacy and was restricted in Vintage until not long ago) or be almost unrelevant. Either ways, I don't see the benefit. At the very least, I'd rather focus on other changes before addressing this one. - Leovold: turn 2 Leovold, turn 3 wheel, you win. It's a 1-card-0-skill combo, it might even be too slow for the current meta, my point is: do we really need it? We've just had Nadu on green, I understand you're fine with it. Do you want even more? - Gifts Ungiven: it's 4 mana, you could assemble breach lines with less, I don't think it would change much. I mean, I'm totally fine with unbanning it in cEDH but, again, what's the issue that you're trying to solve here? In the end, I don't see how these changes would lead to a better environment. To me they could only span from irrelevant to plain obnoxious. I would have expected some additional bans instead, I could understand Rhystic Study but what about Dockside Extortionist then? It's a conditional Black Lotus, it's even easier to recur and abuse, and Black Lotus is banned. What about Thassa's Oracle? It's too brainless of a combo, with Labman you could tinker with Doomsday piles etc. Now all that is pointless. Even Protean Hulk could just fetch Oracle, there is no point in being "clever". What about Ad Nauseam? It's a 1-card combo, it makes a thousand plays unrelevant, you either have it in your deck or suck. What about Nadu? This I don't really get it, everyone is shouting at it and you even propose to unban Leovold instead. Then why not Golos? What's the problem that Golos has that Leovold hasn't? You said Rhystic Study is tedious and time consuming to play with, doesn't Nadu play the same way?

    I am a little sad that the EDH rc neglects the desire of a thriving community for OFFICIAL moderation. It would be really cool to get one or even more members of the RC on the show to respectfully discuss the topic in depth. This way the community does not just get some short statements from time to time and can maybe really understand. Still, I think forming a cEDH RC is an interesting step and experiment. cEDH is already a format where turn 1 wins are currently possible. What is the point of having a ban list at all? Whatever you ban, will move the meta to the next fastest wincon, so any ban is basically trying to make the format slower and in the process will remove alternate wincons from the meta. I would suggest testing games without the EDH banlist, and seeing if any of the "problematic" cards in the current cEDH meta keeps "being a problem" when you have new cards to use in the pool. Another alternative to banning could be assigning point value to the cards, as in Canadian Highlander, so yes, you can include the "broken" cards, but it will cost you, and you will have to leave aside other powerful options. The most unbalanced aspect of the game is the play order, not really the cards. Players who go first have a significant advantage over the rest of the table. If you have four identical players, same skill level, same decks, same initial hand, the first one will definitely be in a better possition. If cEDH will be basically EDH but without rhystic study, and allowing underpowered cards, let's just organize EDH tournaments! Whatever you do with cEDH, it should never be more restrictive than EDH.

    Just unbans and no bans please. Rhystic Study feels like one of the main pillars of the format and it helps slower decks vs turbo. Giving green some upside is highly welcome. And unbanning Leovold seems also good.

    Ahh yes so this boils down to: “Me and 4 of my buddies are taking control of the format because we believe that there’s too competitive of decks and everyone is playing the same cards” Like bro it’s cEDH which is Competetive if you split the format with a new ban list it’s not EDH anymore. You didn’t even leave it up to a vote or anything you just said “we’re in charge now and we decide what gets banned” so like you’re just gonna spike ban list cards when you unban them? Additionally splitting the format we can’t even play EDH unless we bring cards to swap in and out? Let alone international play which aren’t gonna follow your rules. Overall there’s not an inherently broken deck. There’s no “Hogaak” situation like modern was. There’s 5 top decks that people play and there’s enough new cards coming in and out that sooner or later there will be better decks you guys are just trying to take hold of a format that doesn’t truly need fixing and for that you can kiss my ass if any of this comes to fruition.
