Hobbies are something to keep you from going insane, and in that sense stuff related to one are very much like toys. Hobbies also turn to professions way more often than you tend to think, be interested in something and you'll learn. That being said it's healthy to keep the scope of your hobby in mind, oscilloscopes are neat but not necessary for the vast majority of computer fiddling. Being as expensive as they are, it might be better to mess around with stuff until you feel like getting one would be worth it. If it hasn't been that long since you bought your memory kits, you could always return them. Selling second hand is also always an option. I'm sure they won't stop making good memory any time soon, and the prices will probably keep dropping.

Yvette, you might want to look into woofing. If you want to get some exposure in farming. My sister has a goat farm and takes on boarders that work on their farm. They provide housing in exchange for work. wwoof.net. My sister gets people from all over the world to live on her farm for a season. Woofers move from farm to farm and get agriculture business experience. I would do this for a while before buying land to start a farm. Take care.
