    Why would you assume that revealing evil as stemming from human psychology or personality would provide a greater truth or understanding of the Holocaust's atrocities? Metatextually, this movie is a deserved and extreme reaction against Hollywood's portrayal of the Holocaust and its many awful tropes. Although it suffers from its own art house tropes, this context is key to understanding many of the movie's themes. Near the end of the video, you imply that a neutral viewer would not gain much clarity or understanding from it. This viewer does not exist. The real audience for this movie has seen the historical facts and seen the characters of the Holocaust cartoonishly twisted or have been painfully asked to sympathize with or excuse the “good Nazi.” In a deeper way, the revulsion at the film's formalist treatment is connected to the revulsion at the banality of evil. This is intentional. The refusal to see, built into the film's form, does not hinder the theme but creates even greater clarity and connection to it. More importantly, I don’t see how a deeper understanding of the characters would provide insight into the banality of evil. Showing more characterization than the movie already does would not enhance this theme. I actually think a bit too much characterization of a unnecessary kind is included. Much of our lives (as unromanticized as possible) consist of inane moments that don’t offer insight into our character or motivations to the uninvested observer. Here, the superficial is all there really is. To me, the banality of evil includes a inability to see on the perpetrator's part, as you noted - a key aspect of the film, but also a sense that you could have been situated in the same world and found yourself doing the same things (not Hess specifically jesus). Many of the men and women in the Nazi party lived unremarkable lives and participated in an atrocity of enormous scale in ways they could never understand. Now, the view of these people as “avatars of history” is all we really have. Pretending to greater understanding, especially through the seemingly inappropriate form of film, partially reflects the motivation of the Hollywoodization tropes mentioned above. We do not need to intimately understand the Hesses to grasp the potential of evil in banality; their awful lives can serve as examples. As you say, the banality of evil fully encompasses the characters' minds, “so that there is nothing to see.” The true experience of this banality includes this flat, equal cinematographic treatment (as expressed by the camera). Here the formalism reflects the themes. I would also question your assumption that this formalism represents the implicit evil of humanity. Our flat spectatorship brings us closer to the characters than any more exaggerated characterization could. While many might reject empathy with any Nazi, this movie does not entirely ask that of the viewer. Even when flatly disgusted, viewing this film places you closer to the reality and banality of evil than any dubious explanation from psyche or nature. I think the form fits the message well. As an aside, the vision of the future does not imply or assume that the Hess family had any idea of the measure of the atrocity they were part of. I see the sickness we see unfold before that shot as what might be the last human spark of revulsion from the Hess patriarch, not some clairvoyant moment of cosmic justice. In short, the movie’s refusal to see “what makes up man” is not a failure on its part. However, I do agree with some your criticisms of some of the formalist aspects and art house cliches. I tried to make that coherent. what do you think about the above?

    I think this is a great take but I also wonder if the central issue isn't that the Hoss's dont see, but that they don't really have to look anymore because they understand that what is happening in the camps is a foundation to the building of their home. Sight is insufficient and the behaviors and relationships with what is seen is more pressing. They know what they are doing, everyone knows what is happening and recognizes it - the Hoss's are contrasted with the person who goes by night and leaves food deposited where the forced laborers of the camp work. I think for me even the aspect you point to where there's a level of assumed knowledge about the holocaust is telling here - we have been presented with images of the holocaust which range from the Good German of an Oskar Schindler to the sentimentalist gas ovens of the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. We have seen, but seen in ways that act as if seeing is sufficient and even then only seeing in certain ways. The Hoss's themselves are constantly making reference to their own home making, to fighting for their home, they are given recognition for establishing a German home in the lebensraum, the Polish "frontier" of settlement. The film, I think, might be making the point that this project of mass murder is constitutive of the comfort and domesticity that the family is enjoying, and given the climate of the film WRT Palestine, I think there is a very pointed way in which the film might be asking us to consider how genocide and our failures to do anything with our perception of it other than make that perception convenient to our lifestyes and sweep away the moral/social consequences is foundational to the society - the patriarch Hoss can't even vouch for a Banality of evil case because the full moral impact of what he does is evident in the wretching itself, right? Perhaps the film is saying, in this historical case and still today, that we build our world off the back of murder, theft, and displacement, and are far less ignorant than we plead

    Thanks for an interesting take. I think I agree with you that the movie places too much emphasis on moral attention, as though awareness alone could have stopped the Hösses. Still, for me, the movie is a success just because it is such a perfect and thought-provoking melding of form and message. Anyway, well done on formulating what I'm guessing might be a controversial opinion!

It's really disgusting and disturbing how many of these writers are portraying all the NTs as just SO burdened and put upon and "victimized" by the disabilities and disorders and differences of others. It's beyond cruel. Not too mention the stories are often very thin and the characters incredibly cliche. BTW, NOBODY should feel obligated to make excuses for these kind of productions or those involved who could've, but chose NOT to, do much, much better. And yeah, I'm on the spectrum.

    when sister and scotty go to the hospital they all loose their temper, and act out. this is the perspective of some on the perspective. they neurotypical people behave in nonsense and abrupt and abrasive ways too. and also, this has been my experience. its being gaslighted. talked down to, or made to feel like I have to prove I can act normal, whilst everyone also acts immature and don't bother to read deeper into others' creativity and internal world. well I personally was really frustrated by her sister. I think that's part of the aim of the film though, too. Wendy probably feel frustrated also and sees that it is unfair. but she doesn't say it. its an isolating feeling we can relate to.

    “It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. “There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion. “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice! “Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.” - Umberto Eco

      Hi Rachel, sorry to hear you were offended by the video. I’m autistic and have certainly experienced meltdowns the way Wendy does many times in my life. Further - I put a lot of work into these videos and they are informed by disability studies discourses. The comments made here are a direct out growth of quite a bit of other academic critical commentary on disabilities representation in film. I would also encourage you to remember that this is a critique of a fictional film, not of real people. I’m not a clinician and certainly would not take it upon myself to critique such from a clinical perspective. However, as an academic and cultural theorist - I believe representational critique is integral to understanding how such portrayals influence public perception. I don’t believe the film is an accurate portrayal of autism - but you, of course, are free to think that it is. But wouldn’t you prefer representation created by autistic people? Such as this video - made by an autistic person. Thanks for watching.

      @@lexiescineobscura I would prefer someone watch the movie from both characters perspectives. And I wish people would stop almost romanticizing being neurodivergent. It’s very difficult to understand and cope with. Love only gets you a part of the way. I know my son better than my college major for sure. I went to school for early childhood development. But they also make sure the parents are mentally prepared and understand that they may raise a child that needs help for ever not everyone becomes an Elon or Einstein. It’s very emotional as well. We shouldn’t judge someone that clearly couldn’t handle or understand someone different and give that person resources. That’s literally the best thing she could have done. She gave her sister the help she needed to survive.

    Those type of videos are always super weird. Just because it doesn't resonate with YOU, doesn't meant it's the same for others. This movie is recommended and loved by many autistic people and they feel represented.

    • @lexiescineobscura
      @lexiescineobscura 8 месяцев назад

      I am sorry you did not enjoy the video. As a scholar, theorist, and autistic person myself, I stand by the robust critique of narratives such as these. This film in particular, and those like it, are not created in consultation with autistic people. It's unfortunate that autists don't have access to mainstream content created by those like them. But of course, anyone is free to enjoy any portrayal of anything they like, just as I am free to critique it. In any case - the critical lens applied here, in this video, originates in Disability Studies discourse. In particular, I am referencing the theories of David T Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder from their excellent book "Narrative Prosthesis: Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse" which argues a narrative theory that positions disability as a device of characterization. For instance: Wendy is autistic. Autism is characterized as a disability. Wendy's autism (as outlined in the video) is the thing that drives the story. The film uses Wendy's disability as a "narrative prosthesis" to demonstrate the emotional growth of the other characters, but not Wendy. Wendy's growth is rooted in complying with what others want of her. Shocking but true: one can both enjoy films, and be heavily critical of them. Whose to say I don't like the film?
