Welcome to Xephrost Gaming. I do dumb "challenge" run series content in a wide variety of series. From Pokemon, to Final Fantasy, to FromSoftware titles. I do a lot of different nonsense to varying degrees of competency.

Tuesday Afternoon Game Night: Nightmare Kart
Leaving Gau alone in a challenge run is your best decision, because he would otherwise break the game with just a couple of rages.
I get why it wasn't here, but that got me interested in a FF4 No Magic run (PR/originals. DS and PSP/Advance are an entirely different challenge). I don't think it's necessarily that hard, mainly extremely grindy. Trying to break FF4DS may be fun, though?
I see a Xephrost video on my top recommended, I click. <3 Also best magic system probably FF7 for me. I like that you were limited until the very end of the game on both uses and how many spells you could take etc., so you had to really plan out what you were using and when
final fantasy 2 didnt need magic at all? well. now i can finally play the game.
In fairness, the missile base having a self-destruct makes sense if you consider that you can program the missiles to target ANY coordinates. An enemy that takes it over would be able to just bomb Galbadia's capital at will.
For those who don't know FF2 well, remember that he's underselling how useful magic is in that game a bit - Haste, Berserk and Blink are all amazing, with the latter in particular being absolutely game breaking if you combine it with a priority on equipping for high evasion. That's right, magic is good...when it directly interacts with physical attacks. Okay it's also useful for high defense enemies and general instant death shenanigans but it's funnier to focus on how the best uses for magic either make your physical attacks better or make enemy physical attacks worse.
Have you ever thought about why most bosses only use Attacks? It's not poor game design, they're actually very smart! Also, PR actually reintroduces Magic Penalty, making it even worse, because using Magic means wearing no defensive equipment at all. I guess if you're doing a bare-handed challenge?
Hmm fair enough sir
Hearing the healing numbers for all these runs has me reminiscing about Lufia's item spread. I watched an "items only" run recently and they have 3-4 tiers of multiple types of damaging items, while the FF series has junk healing, great healing for the first 25% of the game, nothing, nothing, endgame full-healing. Where are the very high potions? The heavy potions? The demi-lixirs?
I think most final fantasy games would be greatly improved by a wider variety of consumables. That comes with it's own design/balance concerns, but I think it would still be a net positive.
@@Xephrost_Gaming It's not just variety that is important but availability. Several games have a good variety of consumables, but make getting stockpiles of the useful ones a pain which triggers "Too Awesome to Use" syndrome.
If it used Tales of system where healing Items are percentage based, you wouldn't need that many tiers.
Was it Casposaurus' run?
My first FF8 run was when I was 12 years old on release. It was absurdly difficult until I realized something was off. I forced myself to figure it out around the end of disc one. Then thought to myself, "but this feels like cheating".
It really does feel like that. Which is not a great sign for how well balanced the game is. Or isn't as is more accurate. lol.
Any reason you didn't do 9, 10 and 12?
12 I excluded because it will get enough airplay on the channel with job class challenges (and stay tuned for the next Final Fantasy series. It will include 12 and be... magic-lite if not magic-absent). 9/10 have party mechanics that are less versatile. Which means they feel different enough from the other games that they merit being included in a different series.
I thought you would try to do at least FFXII without Magic challenge too! 😢😢😢😢
Yeah, much as I would love to include every game, I do have to be judicious in how many/what games to include. Don't fret too much though. I'm working on recording a final fantasy series that will start airing on 2/28. ANd 12 will be included. It won't be fully no-magic. But it will be very magic-sparse.
As a slightly older kid playing FF8 for the first time, I do remember it being pretty easy to grasp how effective turning tents into curagas and HP junctions was.
It's just... too easy. Magic boosts to stats are flat values. i have to wonder if making junction boosts percentage based would make them less unbalanced (curaga boosting hp by 200% rather than 3000).
Do you have any particular feelings about the Sadness and Hyper statuses in FF7? When I was a dumb teenager I would keep my whole party Hyper for the limit gains, and didn't learn that Hyper and Sadness also affect the damage you receive until basically the end of the game. :D Hearing you talk about how strong and frequent limit breaks are just got me thinking of it. None of what you said about the balance of attacks and magic sounded foreign to me, but hearing it out loud it really is odd. I guess FF7 is what linear wizards quadratic fighters would look like? I don't actually disagree with using the Enemy Skill [command] materia, but it's funny that the first thing you used has "magic" in the name. XD
Fury and sadness can be very useful. Outside of the magic only run I did (where sadness reducing damage was a straight upgrade), you do have to be mindful of the impact the statuses have on the damage you take. But hypers are very useful for building limit gauges and learning new levels. I actually meant to use the Fury status in this run and just kind of forgot to do so? Not really sure where my mind was at.
I'm here to once again advocate for Bravely Default & Bravely Second to be played for the channel
I really need to look into those more. My biggest concern is bravely default are not short games. And I am way less knowledgeable than I am with Final Fantasy.
@@Xephrost_Gaming I 100% recommend that if you play them for the channel you set up a NG+ file. First playthrough experiences aside, there are a number of items and classes which are dated behind progression that could simply be used in a new game run. Such as starting with access to other classes, the items that let you grind faster, and other ways of bypassing obstacles. Every cutscene is skippable so the total playtime experience can be quite low. But still probably in the ballpark of 6 hours as any JRPG tends to be.
We need a do over on ff7. Using enemy magic is a disqualified in most of your fans books.
07:00 [Insert sad Kimahri noises here.] I swear the poor guy is the sole exception to "Blue Magic is pretty powerful" because he also has to shoulder The Dragoon Curse.
As a famous blue mage enjoyer, I really want to like Kimahri. He just really suffers by being a jack-of-all-trades character in a game where you can switch characters in and out mid-combat. It makes him always weaker than a more dedicated character.
Is Blue Magic that good in FFIX? I mean except the Frog move.
@shytendeakatamanoir9740 Even ignoring Frog Drop, yes, Quina gets quite a few pieces of good Blue Magic beyond the staples of White Wind and Mighty Guard. Night and Limit Glove are almost as cheesy as Frog Drop with the right set-up, and even ignoring _those_ too Quina still gets 1,000 Needles, Auto-Life, Earth Shaker, and some other quite usable Blue Magic that they can regularly use. Meanwhile poor Kimahri gets doubly screwed over by having the most mediocre & limited selection of Blue Magic *and* has it locked behind his Limit Break/Overdrive, meaning he has the most infrequent usage of it too regardless of Overdrive conditions set. At least Quistis's Blue Magic is degenerate(...or) for being Limit Break-only, to say nothing of how frequently she actually gets to use it because of _FFVIII_ being so broken mechanically even before the Aura spell and status existing. Kimahri meanwhile gets to use one Blue Magic spell once in a while that another party member can probably do better anyway, which is true even in the case of his best spell of Mighty Guard given Rikku has like three better versions of it. Poor guy is just bad at everything except being tall and physically blue.
@MusicoftheDamned Oh, right! It's been a while since I played either game tbh, so thanks for the clarification. It's sad because Kimahri was legitimately one of my favorite FFX characters.
I wish Khimari had a powerful early game spell that cost an absurd amount of MP to justify his Lancet ability. The idea of draining MP at will is cool, but you're never low enough at any point in the game to NEED it.
A rare correct pronunciation of "Cyan", bravo!
My pronunciation is often wrong (though I do my best). I always used to pronounce Cyan as the color until a much more knowledgeable creator said Kaien in a stream and I had to ask - "Wait, is that how you're supposed to pronounce that?"
An FF2 remake that makes the system better and fleshes out the characters more would be amazing
I know the FF7 remake has been a huge undertaking for square enix. But I would love for them to remake other games (they definitely don't need to go as hard as they did with FF7). Because none of the mechanics in 2 are fundamentally unworkable. They just don't work here.
I mean, there's the entire SaGa franchise. Including the weird magic system of Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond.
Seeing you play through these games helped me to see the good and bad parts of no magic And with eight its a cakewalk with or without magic once you break the system
Safe at home, once again, thanks to Xephrost.
What's everyone's favorite magic system? (Final Fantasy or otherwise)
My vote goes to Wild Arms 1 and 2 actually, a lot of it being due to the fact that you can combine spells with the Dual Cast ability to create entirely new spells, which was super super cool Also, if you’ve never played the series before, I highly recommend it! 😁
Ive always been a huge fan of the customisation of ff7s magic personally. Messing around with different materia setups is a lot of fun. Its a shame you dont get a lot of the fun materia until later though
Quest 64 is up there. It both feels good to navigate the weird elemental menu, and gratifying to unlock new spells. If the system didn't demand specialization and the levels were balanced, it would be great. I'll also praise FF7's flexibility. Such fun toys to play with. Magicka feels like an obvious choice too.
Grandia(the first one) or Golden Sun. Mixing and matching the powers of various elements across your cast to unlock differing spells for each character is really sick.
@Xephrost_Gaming my favorite progession system is FFX, favorite game is FFV. I like Blue Magic in the FF series when its not limited to only one character.
Yay! I’m super early for my Friday friend.
I spent so much time downloading and trying to make the translation patch work just to realize I preferred the license board
I recall only briefly trying to get the translation patch to work on the IZJS version. But I made no real progress. And yeah, while I very much prefer the job boards of the Zodiac Age, I do wish they had included an option to play with the original board for those who prefer that (like they did with the FFX remaster between the original and expert sphere grid).
Thank you I enjoyed listening too ur play through. Very soothing voice you have. ❤
lol im doing a new plathrough and had this awful idea and ofc someone already did it on youtube
“Guy can speak beaver…and they Guy’s us through.” 😂 comedic genius
We can pretend that was a joke and not just me doing a bad job speaking. lol
@ a w is a w whether or not it’s intentional
35:23 Nice.
Very cool! FFT is my favorite game! I make fft music covers
Would reis count as a dragon in this challenge run?
Dragon reis would. She is unique but follows the mechanics of monsters. I probably would have recruited her and Worker 8 if tiamats had been less game-breakingly broken.
You both did a great job, so glad these are back!
These are so fun! Glad they're back!
Monster eggs match level to a random party member
I actually loved the motorcycle game at the time, it was my favorite minigame. A few years later, in college, I even dug deep into the snowboarding and loved it. My 20-30-year-old memories are clearly more trustworthy than this weeks-old playthrough!
Yeah, if you have fond memories of the motorcycle game, I recommend you DON'T replay it. Cling to those positive memories. lol
There are actually many good Steals in FF7, from the top of my head there is Striking Staff in the Train Graveyard Carbon Bangles and Hardedge in Shinra HQ before you get captured. Shinra Beta on the Cargo Ship Right Arms from Bombs on the way to North Corel Gold Bangles from the Dragons on Mt. Nibel Turbo Ethers in the Nibelheim Mansion Adamantine Armlets from the Adamantoise on the beaches near Wutai Circlets in the Great Glacier Shinra Alphas in the Underwater Reactor Also at 18:00 you can use select in battle and it will start showing the target’s name (and HP if you’ve used Sense)
The only time I ever had difficulty with FF8 was on my first playthrough. I severly underestimated of important junctions and drawing of spells were. I replayed it in 2023 and things got a bit smoother, though I made the mistake to draw every spell to maximum in case I needed it. Today, I know the only status ailment spells I need are confuse and sleep in case I encounter a Malboro on the Esthar Fields. My characters can still run while berserk. Or was it run while confused? It certainly was a lot smoother, though I only scrached TT on a surface level to get Squall's second to last weapon on dis 2. Sure, I could get Lionheart on Disc 1, but I didn't felt like that..
I wonder how an "intended" run of FF8 would even look like. like the devs must have tested it and determined it was good SOMEHOW.
I’d love to see you do all the final fantasy 5 jobs
I will likely do most of them at some point. FF5 is great and has enough jobs to almost always slot into a job class series.
Kinda broke the challenge being able to use magic to junction. The only 3 spells u need in the game are curaga, full life and meteor
I absolute adore FF8 partially because of how easy it is to break the game wide open
So basically a normal run.
I have a challenge request for you! Final Fantasy 1 NES Magic Only I recommend 4 Black Mages since you can learn Nuke upon promotion. 😊😊😊 I've done this myself, so it is possible, I usually try to do runs myself before I request them, so I know they're possible. I love your content! 😊😊😊
I wonder if "No magic, GF, Fight, or Limit Breaks" would be interesting. Obviously, some concessions would need to be made to be able to get the ability to deal any damage at all... but could be fine as a minimalist run.
Could be interesting. I'd be limited to basically the draw command and unique gf abilities (treatment, mad rush, etc.). Could be fun.
Fun run! I did a gf abilities only run recently ( So your darksides, revive, recover, etc) Mad Rush was actually pretty powerful lol!
FF8: Cards are fun to play and also broken. FF9: Cards suck to play and are also useless.
They really could not decide how impactful to make card games. lol.
The challenge of FFVIII is finding an actual challenge
I don't wanna yuck your yum but this is how everyone plays already :D The only challenging boss in the game is Omega, and you can cheese that with items anyway. I think the only way to make the game hard is to never use card mod. Maybe I'll give that a shot someday.
0:02 no pls i don't wanna CUM IN
an actual challenge is no cards and it's still not that hard
Yeah, that would be a tiny bit tougher early game and then basically the same. lol
@Xephrost_Gaming Yeah, when I did it, it became a non issue once I got Lvl up and down. The one challenge I've ever seen be difficult was no GF at all, including junctioning... that ended up being just Selphie using Slots with a chart to guarantee The End
FF8 is my favorite broken child Almost everything can be trivialized and the game becomes more of a "meta spreadsheet knowledge check" making it an entirely different kind of game altogether... with that said I've replayed at least eight times and still have fun breaking it in new ways
Yeah, I think I'm probably in the double digits at this point. It's not a hard game, but it is fun to break.
You sound like you're......... Well I'll get in trouble for saying Also I didn't know this was a challenge run. Played this way since 98 or 99 or whatever
