Welcome to Xephrost Gaming. I do dumb "challenge" run series content in a wide variety of series. From Pokemon, to Final Fantasy, to FromSoftware titles. I do a lot of different nonsense to varying degrees of competency.

Red Mages Only: Final Fantasy - Summary
To bad Blue mage doesn't really exist outside of FF5, it is one of the more interesting jobs in Final Fantasy. I guess you COULD count a few individual characters from some of the other games though (FF6 and 10 both have Blue mage-esque characters) but those would be a very different kind of run. Thief, Monk, Ninja, Warrior/Knight are options.
Get in position!
I never beat this game. But only did the hunts. You’re making me want to go back and finally beat it
I recommend it. The game is very good, and the ending is great.
This game gives me fast food ptsd flashbacks
It does get very hectic very quickly.
Man I miss this game! I wish they'd do a remaster or something for it!
LOL they actually are making one it sounds like! BOMB!
Rumors have swirling about a remaster/remake for years. If that ever actually happens, that will be a day 1 purchase for me.
always so fun, thanks for the upload!
time mage in FF tactic??
Seems like the running trend with FFIII, fun game until you reach the final dungeon and the game is like " All right motherfucker !!! Fun time is over here's 6 bosses in a row all of them being big HP Sponge with 1 to 3 attacks cause we're lazy, with no possibility to exist the area, hoped you grind enough if not TO BAD." Honnestly even in a casual run the final part just ruined what was otherwise a pretty good game.
The fact you didn't try and abuse Vanish in a solo party astounds me. No need to fight every enemy if they don't notice you.
I'll be honest, I always forget Vanish even exists. I should really remember that for other runs. Though, it looks like access to it is pretty limited.
@@Xephrost_Gaming Pretty much. Not only do you need to recast it every so often, monsters will still notice you if you get close enough, and it breaks if you do anything besides move. Which means if libra runs out need to recast stuff. I got the windy esper way earlier than I was supposed to with it since the undead die to healing and I could Reflect/Spell spam the esper down. Of course I nearly died escaping afterward due to running into ghosts and a room with two disease dragons. It's specifically useful for the Time Mages. who already had their run.
The Sphere system in international does allow you to instantly go into a single class path. Though eventually you can by dent of sheer ap go into all parts.
love me some ff12! subbed
The irony of calling them your next GF like you're cycling girlfriends. This game is silly. (And then I hear the start of disk three. Never would have guessed.)
Small Child nopes local Demon out of existence. Is this Innocence?
Fun fact: If you cast reflect on all your party members and then hit them with a damage spell + all, it'll reflect onto all the enemies 3 times
Love the reference to T-Hawk's solo run. His and Sullla's runs have made me understand FF5 so much better under the hood. Thanks for your class videos 👍🏻
This game's leveling system is not a good thing given your spells require you to grind them against the wall of progress. Only to not matter cause Blink Spam beats everything. Game really wants you to use physical given Leon has the same MP he started with.
I remember doing an all time mage run way back with the izjs fan translated rom. I just always had a time mage bias eversince. Xbows with haste are fun and safe and drop enemies fast as you've noticed here. It's the combination of range, speed, armor, etc. that makes time mage runs viable. Even moreso now with 2 jobs.
Might be an idea to compare FF3 for DS/PSP as a comparison since the redesign is more than just changing max HPs (Cloud of Darkness has multiple attacks and three parts) and it uses an MP system rather than spell slots.
bro these are cool
2:24 Well you are Captain Basch. On a side note, the Sandsea is more spectacle and links to the Ozmone Plains via the underground. Along with the double supermob dragons and wind esper being located there. ... Honestly the entire cave feels like a puzzle to get through to the rewards tucked away. Or a stealth mission in my case cause man is it annoyingly high level. And trapped.
This endgame grind feels like Atelier Ayesha's final endbosses. Which take way too long to kill and can just murder you halfway through the fight. Oh, and they can all heal at phase change. The last of the four heals 10,000 HP during their third phase, and has 4 attacks not counting their delayed 4 attacks that knock your turn back. Given the rest of the game these four superbosses do not feel fun. They are in fact a grind against the alchemy system. On a side note, the second blinds, weakens, and recovers 100 hp an action with 3 actions and multiple full party attacks. With the chance to get to go twice due to battle mechanics. Also why do the special attacks deal less damage than normal skills? And endgame attack items deal less than a normal attack from Ayesha herself? Beats me. Took me far too long to figure out combination chains and this is the third time I've needed to make end game equipment. Everything else just died to the first version, end bosses included. Difficulty curve is not stable against 4 Red Power. *I am still here trying to beat them. The first DLC dungeon at least had interesting fights.* Rant over. Healing all your damage dealt is only a good thing if the boss is designed around that mechanic like the snek-dragon boss of FFV. Otherwise it's a bore and chore.
Powe-...wati...Supre-...no... uh... HEALERS ARE FUN.
Makes me wonder how difficult a Machinist Only run would be. No magic or blades, just bringing a gun to every fight. On a side note, Espers stats scale with your character's level. It's just that Zodiac massively buffed their hp. Level 1 has it doubled and others have triple. And a good few have augments to ignore reflect and/or vitality. Including the very first one, Belias. Alongside some upgraded movepools like the Renew of Famfrit. The optional Zeromus is the strongest since it's Gravity Well attack is fractional based on it's current hp against it's max. With Bubble this becomes completely busted since it ignores defense entirely. On top of half element damage taken. If ever you need to completely cheese a boss Zeromus is the goat. Big Bang, it's finisher, deals (Max HP - Current HP) x5 instead of x2. Ignore Vitality is why most of the Espers can hit so hard with basic attacks though. But Zeromus is how I beat Ultima, alongside Holy Absorb.
I will be doing machinist in 12 at some point. Very curious to see how that goes.
Wow, I forgot about Byblos. There are plenty of parties who get sandbagged there because Protect drags their damage under the amount he Drains. But to think that his entire moveset debilitates White Mages in particular. That's an *awful* time. Thank you for trying, and thank you for stopping.
Tiamat is weak to "Break".
If agility works the same way in the Pixel Remaster as it does in the original, then agility -> higher hitrate -> more hits per turn. That's why when you cross the 32% hitrate, your damage just about doubles. (that's when you go from 1 -> 2 hits per round). Each hit rolls its own accuracy + damage, which is a big reason why you seem to have a lot higher chance of critical hits in the late game . . . if any of your hits are critical, the entire damage amount is reported as a critical hit. So it's not only "missing less hits", it's making more hits in the first place. Which are then x2 by haste, and a black belt has another x2, (meaning they can hit for 32 attacks when hasted and above 224% hitrate). Temper raises your attack by a constant 14 points, and Sabre increases your attack by a constant 16 points + your hitrate by 10 points, (you can cast it using Giant's glove), so a few rounds of sabre bring you to maximum attack * # of hits per turn. The difference between a weak and strong combat character is then only a couple more rounds of castings. Protect/Protera I'm assuming is Fog/Fog2, and in that case it reduces enemy damage by 8, or fog2 which also aids the entire party, by 12. This might sound bad, but because of the whole multiple hits thing, it can prevent, say 8 hits x 8 = 64 damage from a single cast. Some enemies become entirely trivialized by just a few casts of this! Sadly, Chaos hits like a truck, and only deals 1 hit, so Fog/Fog2 are very low priority in the final battle. Ruse increases your evade by 80 points, probably called blink in Pixel Remastered, and Inv/Inv2 increase your evade by 40 points . . . and they stack. So, lots of casts of Inv == very, very, very good.
BTW, this continued to be moreorless the same underlying battle system, just hidden more, right up through FF6, so you can apply some of the rather unusual hitrate = more hits logic straight through the first 6 FF's to understand a lot of the damage logic a lot more.
Might be interesting if you included the Bravely Default games into the mix. These games feel like the true sucessors to the Final Fantasy turn-based games as opposed to the action rpgs that ended up overtaking the franchise. You could do actual full white mage runs as well as other similar classes as you have with these challenges. The original Bravely Default games might be hard to get recorded as they are stuck on the 3DS, but Bravely Default 2 is easily available on PC.
Thinner air means airship has a maximum height it's propellers can lift. Using adamantite to reinforce the drives means the propeller can spin faster. Without breaking the shaft and crashing. Crashing is bad, you should know this given the number of things you broke.
Ohhh. It's to reinforce the engine. I've crashed so many airships, I just assumed we wanted the hull to be sturdier.
Why no 10/2 white mages?
My one question is if FFV would beat out any of the other ranked despite the drawbacks of a dividing wall. Like why is that a thing.
The better way to beat Byblos with White Mages is to Grind to about Level 30ish and grind out a ton of elixirs in the wind shrine and just wait out his MP(This is also the strat used for Atomos, that fight is just way worse). Still mind numbingly dull and tedious but it's faster than grinding to the level Cap in World 1.
I feel like FF3's endgame is balanced around Ninja, which is why it's easy enough in a normal playthrough but a slog on most single class challenge runs.
Yeah, FF3 is quite fun casually. But any sort of restriction makes the ending section an absolute slog.
I always love these summary videos, and can’t wait for your next series!
Will we ever have any other FFIII runs? Because fighting the Big Rat without any spells just seems like too much of a pain tbh
I will probably still do more runs in FF3. It really is fun for MOST of the playthrough. But yeah, dealing with that rat in the nepto shrine is definitely gonna be an issue in non-caster runs.
I appreciate that you have the self-respect to say “I’m not doing this” when needed.
I know it really only exists in ff12 but i would love to see a machinist only one shot from you about it
I will at some point be doing a run through 12 with every class. So I will be doing machinist. Eventually.
@Xephrost_Gaming I also just thought of gunner in X-2 but that's still not enough for a series
Machinist also exists in FFT, but that means basically a Mustadio-only run or using mods (probably recommend)
Okay, time to check backlog buster and see how their white mage only run went.
Oh, that hasn't come out yet. Oh boy, sounds like that will be torture of an episode.
@@sam7559 Still wonder which one will go worse between that and Thief given the other two problem child classes are out of the way with Bard and Berserker, Freelancer is decent even without learning from other classes & has excellent equipment selection (since it can equip everything IIRC including Ribbons), and Mime comes so late that it misses most of the game anyway.
half of the wind crystal jobs haven't been done yet, although he announced that the next video is Thief so maybe soon.
@@MusicoftheDamned yeah I don't see freelancer being an issue, gets to use whatever is the best equipment available at any point and if he needs magic rods are looking quite smashable.
Oh that seems like an easy one. Probably never die but takes forever to ki- *looks at Byblos. Scratches out the “never die” part*
FFV would be possible in a reasonable amount of time if white mages could break the elemental rods like every other mage class in the game. Still tedious, mind you, with all the additional money you would need to grind for to afford all the necessary rods, but possible.
Yeah, having rods would definitely make it doable, if a bit tight on money. Without that, white mages are just not strong enough to make this feasible.
There *is* a staff they can break for early Holy casts, but... the staff in question is a drop from a late world 2 enemy so that's not exactly gonna help much of the run...
I don't even know you personally but the title of this video made me go: "What'd you do...?" lol
Oh yeah Byblos was awful for a four job fiesta where I got White Mage, Berserker and Ranger for the first three crystals. Pretty much went with one zerk and three mages keeping the party as healthy as possible.
Now do more FFXII content please <3
Thank god, new Xeph to sleep to
So, in other words: FFV White Mages only is like FF3 red Mages only. Except the road block hits you like a truck way before end game and with equipment options that are just as inferior if not worse. Good riddance, that would carve away way worse at my sanity than the Red Mage FF3 run.
Yeah, I have never hit a brick wall in a run quite like Byblos. White Mages just have absolutely nothing at that point in the game to make this fight manageable.
3:15 Rod smash?
White mages in ff5 can't use rods
@@Raziel_The_Soul_ReaverYeah, if they could Rod Smash, then they wouldn't notorious for their lack of damage and being such a slog in a same-class _FFV_ run. (See also: Thief.)
Yeah, as others have said, white mages can't break rods. FF5 only lets you use this weapons in combat to cast spells if the character can currently equip them. I only discovered this in my black mages only run when I wanted to use the Masamune to cast haste and discovered I could not.
The only "rod smashes" they could do is Staff of Light, and that is acquired through rare drops in Galuf's world, and that is _far_ after encountering Byblos. They are also, well, a rare drop. So good luck spending an eternity farming those.
Love the channel man, one question tho why didn’t you smash the elemental rods in ff5? I would think you could have beaten the game that way
White mages can't break rods. You can only use items to cast spells in FF5 if the character can actually equip the item. Since white mages can't equip rods, they also can't break them to cast spells, they don't even show up in the item menu in combat.
@@Xephrost_Gaming TYTY
They can break Staff of Light, but those are a rare drop in Galuf's world. Also, you still have to get through Byblos before you can even get there. They are also, well, a rare drop. So good luck spending an eternity farming those.
Have you thought of doing ff8 with only the magics refined with L-magic refine for White Mage, T-Magic refine for Time mage, and so ?
Monk is my favorite melee class so I would love to see a monk only run
Monk is definitely on the future series list. I've used monks but never extensively, so I'm very excited to find out how well they stack up to an entire game.
What job class series should I do next?
I think either monks or rangers would be interesting.
I think Samurais or monks would be fun.
Monks sounds totally doable, but *the light dims, thunder in the distance* have you considered geomancers?
Summoner, samurai, ninjas
With the daggers 5 aspect from the XII video I think Thief would be a fun try.
This should be easy. Literally just watched someone do a speed run of FFT and Black Mages were essentially the meta.
