Ableton Live Sidechain Compression Tutorial
I had been looking at the IK multimedia Uno synth, but the JT mini looks really interesting. Biggest problem for me are my giant gorilla hands.
Haha it’s surprisingly easy to get to all the knobs and sliders even with big hands. I really like the spec on the Uno but I’ve heard they have problems with the components.
It looks and sounds great! The features are amazing, esp the motion control. Already pre-ordered it from Sweetwater.
Yeah its feature list is amazing for such a small synth. Sounds awesome too! I think you’ll really enjoy it.
I think because it is so small, as a first synth where you still might have to learn to understand what everything does, it gets confusing quickly. The ms1 is more expensive, but I think larger and more simple to understand. Ps i have the jt4000 and in the studio its all so hidden away that i barely grab it
Yeah I agree. A lot of menu diving with the JT4000. Seems they sacrificed a lot of usability for the sake of making it as small as possible.
Oh! I didnt realize these were out yet. Very happy to see that they accept cc for its controls. Midi goblin should work as a patch librarian and patch morpher for the jt mini
Cool, too late for me to be my first one, but I’m still getting it!!!!
My first was the og Arturia Minibrute back in 2013 FOR 5x the price.... which I still LOVE. The Behringer JT Mini looks like the perfect day 1 synth for learning synthesis. I love my volcas because they sound great - but also being portable; I can sit at the breakfast nook with my coffee, or sit on the counch in the afternoon, or throw it into my backpack for sitting on the train. Does the JT Mini take batteries ?
No batteries but usb powered. I’ve been using it out and about with my MBP and Ableton Move as an audio interface. Very small and powerful set up.
Yeah it’s a great addition to any set up. Awesome sounds!
marry me
What a legendary guy you are and what a legendary little beast this is!!! 😮❤
Haha thanks so much! 👍
Can you tune the vcos independently?
Ooooooo!!! I’m keeping this for when I’m in mood to play stuff like Ghostwire: Tokyo c:🙌
Awesome!
It definitely has an old Roland sound. The paraphony is a bit of a limitation, but it does sound good. I have the other synth in this similar form factor, the VS Mini. I really enjoy that little synth and use it often.
Yeah the paraphony is a shame but at this price not a deal breaker. I haven’t tried the VS Mini. I’ll have to give it a go.
@robbiefithon The VS Mini is really nice, it can sound quite analog or digital (the analog filter is sweet). I find it a little difficult to program, but the new factory patches that were released in December are a much better starting point.
I appreciate these sound only demos. I'd much rather hear the synth than some guy talking about how wonderful it is or how much he doesn't like it. I can read what the controls do. I'd much rather hear the synth than some guy talking about it.
Haha me too! I don’t mind reviews if they’re creative, like they actually make music with the synth. Otherwise we just need to hear it! 👍
Sounds pretty cool. For $99, I'll get one, though I already own several cheap synths. Sort of reminds me of the Korg Volca Keys from what I can hear from this demo. I have the Behringer VS Mini and this form factor obviously owes a lot to that design. Looks like Behringer is creating a whole line of cheap synths based on that. Good marketing decision. I'm a big fan of Volcas in no small part because it is easy to go from one to another due to similarities in control functionailty.
Yeah, the Volcas are the closest comparison, these seem to have better midi spec though. Yeah Behringer seem to be using the same chassis for this mini range. Definitely makes sense.
I remember when there was controversy over synthesizers and sampler keyboards. They say they aren't real instruments. Then there was controversy over vocal effects. They say any tone-deaf person off the street could become a vocalist. Now there's controversy over AI. They say AI will replace songwriters. There have always been purists.
Yep, and old time music hall singers protested against microphones when they were first used. I guess all change brings an element of fear.
Love the tune
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for the demo! But if you're only demo'ing the Behringer JT Mini for all sounds, I'd rather see only that (and no other decorative and unused synths around) and the midi synth / sequencer you're actually playing on / using :)
Thanks! Yeah I didn’t have room on my desk to move everything! I also thought seeing it alongside the other synths might give people an idea of its size. Having the midi keyboard in shot is a good idea too 👍
Cool track 🙌
Thanks!
My JT mini arrived two days ago.
Awesome! You’re gonna love it! It’s a keeper 😃
Great job!!
Thanks! 👍
Great 👊
Thanks!
Intriguing subject but those horrible clicking noises are not musical at all and I had to stop after 2 minutes 14 seconds I'm going to make sure Google doesn't feed your channel to me again
The clicking noises are the kick drum. You can’t hear the low end when you listen on your phone.
@robbiefithon I was watching that on my big screen TV with fairly decent speakers. Not studio monitors but I listen to a lot of music through it
@@davidrobertson4301 Oh no... do you need therapy? You must feel absolutely horrible now!
Just saw this as a post in Behringer FB group, brilliant job! 👏
Thanks! Can’t believe how versatile this little synth is!
Great track ❤
Thank you!
I would say you more than pulled it off. If you sidechained the drums just a bit and maybe came out of that super low sub bas muddy a round through ozone or the ios mastering app final touch… it would be a club banger !
Oh shit i left off an s on bass , what an ass.
Thanks! Yeah I wanted to leave it all as raw as possible. Maybe I’ll develop it into a track and put it out.
@_c_y_p_3 What an As
Cool, love these minis and micros, I have the JT-4000 and the Pro VS.
I just got the JT4000M. Can’t believe the sound out of these tiny synths!
Sounds great !!
@@jason.martin thanks!
make drums with it too. i bet it will sound better than any sample pack. does it have noise to make high hats?
@@ptah23 no noise but it could still make percussion sounds.
I'm trying to talk myself out of buying another synth , your just not helping 😂
Haha! It’s just irresistible 🤣
The price is just right for an impulse buy. 😅
All sounds from the JT Mini. Track produced in Ableton Live. Only processing is Ableton stock EQ, Delay and Reverb.
The MINI's FILTER ENV sounds like it doesn't have the ATTACK bug found in the JT4000 1.5 firmware.
@@BassFatCat yeah I’ve had no problems with it.
How many midi channels can you send to JT?
@@isaaccereijo5263 You can't expect multi timbrality on an analog synth at that price.
Just want to check - this is paraphonic, not polyphonic right? For $99 it's still an insane bargain of course, but I'm pretty sure the envelope re-triggers for notes being held down when you play a new note.
Yeah it’s 3 note paraphonic 👍
Yeah it’s 3 note paraphonic
Lovely sounds!
Thank you!
Great ambiant music, the analo synths sounds really warm. I’ve got the PRO VS mini, I think the JT mini will be my next purchase of these tiny synths.
Thanks! Yeah the JT Mini sounds huge for such a small unit. Definitely a must-have piece of kit.
Spotify has not been good for the music industry. Adding AI is not going to make it any better. Who do you think they will elevate: their bot or a human songwriter who demands royalties?
Good point and I completely agree. The less musicians think they have to depend on streaming for an income the better. Spotify is about some weird rich guy getting richer, it has nothing to do with music. The way to make a living from music is, as it always has been, building an audience by playing live and connecting with people.
AI or a drummer.... One shows up on time. 🥁
Snare fill 🥁
best demonstration ive seen
Thank you for your video. I must say, it helps me as a musician to be less afraid by AI. But it leaves some questions open. What about the huge ecological print of AI ? What about the fact that AI is accelerating the process of human creations being used to feed databases in the hands of a very small amount of persons (aka the billionaires who invested massively in this technology) ? What about this : "AI is the way rich people have found to take away from creative people the possibility to become rich" ?
I agree AI is definitely a big concern outside of the scope of this video. But I think as musicians it definitely helps to think of it as a tool right now.
Good to see someone with sensible comments and a level-headed approach rather than the usual hysterical anti-AI nonsense. It's a great tool - in all fields, not just music.
"hysterical anti-AI nonsense" You could also talk about the tech bro pro-AI nonsense.
👍
thnx bro
👍
Im gonna get one but I'll definitely hook up my keystep 37 to it. I dont think that tiny touchpad would be all that usable. I like the sounds better than the vs mini for sure
Yeah it’s pure analogue so sounds amazing. Keystep 37 would be a brilliant companion for it 👍
@robbiefithon nice. Its on preorder everywhere I look tho. How'd you get it so fast? I guess they had a small initial production run or something
@ yeah I think I got lucky getting it so early. I think it’ll be worth pre-ordering as I’m sure they’ll get more out quickly.
@Will-xf3qe I ordered one from Gear4Music on Monday and it's arriving tomorrow. They had two in stock (plus a nearly new one). Worth checking.
The VS Mini had crap presets, and is a bit hard to program. I bought some great patches for about $10 for it, have a better starting point for my own patches. Now it sounds amazing.
Filter is nice. Other than that, not sure. If you can play it in mono with three slightly detuned oscillators, though…
Yeah the filter is very nice, and the sound with that detune is massive 😃
Live Jam with Behringer JT Mini AND massive FX which is not from the Behringer.
FX are Valhalla Vintage Verb and Ableton stock eq and delay.
Sounds great
Thanks! 👍
@robbiefithon 🙂
Has a big sound for something as small as the JT, had mine since Monday love it 😎
Yeah it sounds massive! 😃
Good jam!! Very smooth.
Thanks! 👍
Sounds nice (especially for the price). Did you add any effects?
Thanks! Yeah Valhalla Vintage Verb and Ableton stock delay and EQ.
Good vid again thanks for sharing. How do you add the effects in ableton ie are you using a midi or audio track and then I presume you are running a line into ableton /pc from the head phones jack on the mini?
Yeah, effects are Valhalla Vintage Verb and Ableton stock eq and delay.
@@DavidRozier-tj6uhyeah I’m sending the midi from Ableton (using Ableton Move as a midi keyboard) and audio from the JT Mini is coming back in on an audio track.
Very beautiful sound. I’m expecting mine sometime next week.
Finally, nice! But is MPE necessary? Im asking because when I used FL Studio like 10 years or even more ago I was able to do similar stuff right into fl :)
The fl one wasn't able to do it with 3rd party plugins only stock and samples. Idk if they've updated that now. With mpe you can do it with anything that supports it
@@lilwombat Ah, true. Can be possible (mostly used it in 3osc to make sirens). But I still feel like I did it with Sylenth1 or so, but you will be right.
Yeah it uses the MPE tab in Ableton.
Thanks for the first demo I’ve heard that really exposes the real Tone of this instrument. Looking forward to my JT mini!
Thanks! You’ll love it! 👍
Sounds amazing, these mini synths that Behringer make give people the opportunity to have big synths for minimal cost and a minimal amount of studio space. Where did you get it from?
Yep and they sound awesome! I got mine from Gear4Music. Really fast delivery 😃
@@robbiefithonMine also..G4M were the only store that actually had them in stock read to ship!
is between a juno 106 and jupiter. i own the juno 106 and some sounds can't be reproduced. de tuning and some bell sounds, are more jupiter related. i hope with some effects and effort the behringer can convince me. else i have a 2nd juno in my set for 120euro which is quite nice 😊
Sort of in the same way the Juno was a stripped-down Jupiter but with DCOs instead of VCOS and chorus to fatten the sound to compensate for lack of detune. The JT Mini is a bit closer since it's probably using VCOs, and it can detune the oscillators.
Behringer is killing it with these minis and micros
Can hardly keep up with their release schedule! But can’t wait to see what’s coming next 😃
Thank You for the great demo !
You’re welcome! 😃
