Just your average old guitar guy with a penchant for thrash, rock and metal. I mostly cover tunes I like and respect, but I'm down for a request now and again. I do reserve the right to post dumb crap along with lessons/tutorials and rants now and then. I'll tell you what I think.
My cover's aren't meant to be perfect as life isn't like that. They're just a way of saying thank you to the bands I love and show a true snapshot of where I'm at at the time. If I made them perfect, they would just be sterile husks; lacking liveliness and the human qualities that drew me to them in the first place. What is a guitar part without an extraneous string noise now and then and a few mistakes sprinkled about? Dead.

Savatage - Castles Burning (Guitar Cover)
Decidedly not thrash, the song holds a very special place with me. As taken from my post yesterday:
(Tonight, I learned a simple tune. Decidedly not thrash, but a good and sentimental one based on the listenings of an ill-fated move to Vegas 30 years ago. The second day was dawning of the overnight ride. The desert, plateaus crested with cloudbursts in the distance, purple in hue as we drove by was magic. This song was playing at the time and I think I'll have to cover it as it is forever synonymous with that imagery, possibility, and a new start. Skolnick-era Savatage, here we come.)
The drive down took 26 hours. This really was an amazing time and was a marked turning point in my life in ...

King Diamond - Amon Belongs to Them (Guitar Cover)

What can I say about King Diamond and his fantastic music that I have not already talked about in one of the previous covers I've done. Well, for starters, I can tell you that it took me a while to get into this tune. Side A had me enraptured, but the Wedding Dream kind of threw me off and set the stage for everything on Side B with the exception of Something Weird, Victimized and Cremation. Th...

The 666 Subscriber Special - Thank you!
Totally not familiar with the tune. Very well done (as usual) my friend.
This riff is so nice..well played..thanks!!
King and Andy always write great stuff. Thank you for stopping in!
Nice job bro!
Thanks man. I know it's not exactly the one that you requested like a year ago., and it's definitely a different era for that band, but I really needed to play this.
Great rants! Guitar players are overly self-important creatures with inflated egos afflicted with every possible social disorder. Love the playing and instruction tho, perfect as always!
Thanks man. It ain't just the domain of the guitarist though, but in general, people these have an over-inflated sense of self worth. This over-valuation inflates their ego and leads to the entitlement mentality we see today. In fact it feeds itself. Going to make a segment intro for the rants/grinds my gears bits. I think it's time.
Hilarious😂😂😂😂
I confess to laughing at this far too long before I posted it.
The album is a masterpiece
Agreed.
🤘😎🤘
👁🤝👁
Nothing like those screaming harmonics 🤘🏻🤘🏻
And in the intro to the tune as well! Makes quite a statement.
Really good cover, man! Reagrding the amps on this album: Andy said in a recent interview that they used am JCM 800 with V30s for rhythm guitars on "Them", "Conspiracy" and "The Eye". For leads they used on those albums the G & K ML 250 boosted by a Tubescreamer. I assume the rhythm tracks are boosted as well, but he didn't state that particularly. Cheers!
Thanks! Now about the amps... I had heard about the Marshall and Tube Screamer as recently as a year ago from an interview with Andy, but the Gallien-Kruger 250ML, I had not! I knew that amp as the secret sauce for several 80s Iron Maiden records, and maybe even Chuck on the Human album and Gary Moore for a bit, but... well that explains SO much! Its looking like if I want to replicate my favorite lead tones of all time in real life, I might have to pick one up someday. Thanks for the info! Really great!
@@YeOldeThrashDude Yeah, the interview is on RUclips. The channel is called "Riff Worship" and Andy speaks about the gear around the 34 minute mark. I love that kind of info as well.
@@DeathMetalManiac1988 Most excellent info man! Guitarcheology deep dive here I come.
Man, you CAN shred! Pure joy to listen to. Great job!
I play okay. 😋 You just feel free to comment any time! You are very welcome here! Thanks!
Watching your channel a bit. Subbed. I haven't ventured in to playing death/blackmetal for a while and though I have a few more projects to start, I think it's time for some old-school CoF and Dimmu. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@YeOldeThrashDude Thank you, man! Yeah, old Dimmu and CoF have a ton of great riffs - so much inspiration!
@@DeathMetalManiac1988 Bands like that carried me through the dark times of the grunge and alternative-laden airwaves of the 1990s. The spiritual successors to thrash and death. So many too. Too many to list.
Thanks for the lesson man! I'm at work but will check out the full version soon.
It's ready when you are: ruclips.net/video/ITNrs2bOyFY/видео.html And thank YOU!
Nice skills!!! Question tho, how much did the guitar cost???
Hey thanks! The answer might surprise you. I bought it at auction. It was new, but had some gnarly body damage. I repaired and refinished it, replaced the EMGs with far better passives that are awesome and dirt cheap (electronics too), some minor fretwork, and had to replace the bridge's baseplate. Did all the work myself. All-in, about $500.00. New, and in perfect shape, an M-400 would normally run north of $1k. You can call me "frugal". As for the playing, I can still do that on my $89.00 fully stock Squier Strat, so there's that. So can you, for that matter. It isn't the guitar, it's the dedication. Put the time in, practice well, and see results. Also, just noticed your name. One of the guitars I built is named "The Rat". Neat.
You crushed it! Sure you had that one oops moment, but... seriously, who's out there doing better? Thoroughly enjoyed it and Hopper really helped set the mood. Rhythms looked really simple in this.... solos, well, you know.... shredzilla. Amazing work as usual my friend!
The oops I left in mostly because I kept goofing the rhythms. It was like take 20. I was ready to move on. Hopper was there pretty much the whole time. During Andy's parts I was having much the same hang-ups and he was there for most of that. Even put a paw on my knee once as if to tell me it was going to be okay once. XD In the instruction vid, you'll see that though the rhythms are fairly physically easy, like you thought, but they are moving around a lot and are not always in commonplace keys (Eb, or G#). Why is that a thing? Most guitarists actively avoid playing in keys like those (and C minor) because they lay between common keys and cause your brain to pop a tire on that sharp gravel-laden road to no-man's land. Still, it's wholly worthwhile to learn.
@@YeOldeThrashDude Isn't all King Diamond worth learning? I mean.... c'mon. Hopper, he's a good boy. So supportive.
Well yes. On both counts.
Perfect as always
Aw shucks 😊. Instructional video to follow soon.
Kitty hammin' it up @ 3:36
That's my boy!!
Never heard this song bu awesome work! That solo is burning a hole in my head.
The dynamic duo of Andy and Pete NEVER disappoint. They are thoroughly worth investigating. I gotta say though that I missed one note in Pete's lead, but I'm going to live with it. I'm totally dyeing on the inside though.
Nice! King Diamond is my favorite band.
Thanks! They're definitely in my top 10 for most influential for me. LOVE THEM!
Man thank you very much ive been shearching for this for to long and i finaly find it
Hope it's helpful!
Great lesson!
Thanks man!
Sorry about the poor audio on this one. Experimenting. All will be returned to normal next week.
Hello and welcome, it’s running man time.
And that time is now!
Nice tone and playing as always, Cheers!
Thanks man! Hands were feeling a little brutish yesterday, not good for music surgery, but okay for a Maiden lead, I suppose. The tone! Thanks man! That's the NuX Trident. Bought it for "band practice", but I'll be darned it just does the job my real amps have been doing all this time. It even FEELS like an amp. Very impressed.
@@YeOldeThrashDude Wow cool Nux Trident, impressive bro, thanks for the info.
@@ericbabl It's pretty nifty, I have to say.
Thx❤
You're quite welcome. Hope it helps.
You know Eddie is turning over in his grave you do know that right
You do know EVH had a sense of humor, most do. It's something you prove you have a lack of by commenting and taking something titled "crap mashup" seriously. Have you tried therapy? Maybe meditation? Go to church? Smelling roses? Get a life, you poor man. 🤣
You're playing a perfectly good music and adding a drunk crackhead to sing. Doesn't make sense
You're comparing apples and oranges. You killed the song. Please stop it
Because some rando said so? Never!
OMG you actually pulled off playing the meow on the guitar!!!!
Haha, yes well I should tell you I've played "meow" much better in times past. This one came out so exaggerated and crazy I had to keep it. It cracked me up. 😹😹
amazing!! what a great album!! I did the cover of Bizarre Cosmic Industries but in the drums
A drum cover? Do tell! (Okay I had a look. Great job!) I see you also did a cover of Welcome Home, mine will be out in October. 🎃 Nexus IS a great album. I must have played that to death back in the day. So many great cuts! I picked Bringer because it was the first tune I ever heard from them and I have a buddy who would have loved to see that played. In Times Before the Light is much less cosmic, but pretty good also. Respect!
Thank you for this !
You're welcome! I hope it's helpful.
🤘😎🤘
🤠 🙌
Top job
Nice of you to say!
Nailed it! There’s your own style in the cover and it fits perfectly!
Thank you. I respect the material far too much to ever add my own melodic noodles anywhere but at the end. They wrote a great song!
Killer Solo brother. Loved it
That lead is a long standing favorite of mine! John Christ really hit a home run when he wrote it. And thank you!
You are a thrash treasure. Hope you are up for some work.
I strive just to get close to your speed and playing ability
Aw man, you gotta strive higher than that. Don't low ball yourself! But thanks, man. Seriously.
@@YeOldeThrashDude You've seen my playing. While it has improved over the past 2yrs, I still have a long way to go. I'm happy to keep improving though here in my early 50s.
Of course, man. We both are, but I got to say I'm far cry from the point I was at, like 16 years ago. But I'll tell you though, dude. Just like you, I don't strive to be as good as I am. I shoot for a higher point than that. You should shoot for a higher point than me, LOL. Go ahead, man. Set that bar away up high.
Still missing a beat. Ya its crap alright
Beat missing? Factually incorrect. Crap? Emphatically.
I dig, I hear a loop, but would have some fun on this drumming, lots of open space for quick fills.
Of course you do! Unavoidable. Had to get this idea fragment out and I wasn't about to let programming stand in my way. 😋
Sorry Chris, you know I'm odd, this stuff is right up my alley. I think "The Kirks" should record something together. LOL
If we only new a bassist who also was named Kirk. I mean besides me, but I'm only a guitar player on a bass. What did you have in mind though?
@@YeOldeThrashDude Welp, I may just have touch with a bass player named Kirk, we've never connected, but its the way! I do have other connections on bass though. Feeling a little Vai in this one, well done. Maybe send me a track with one of these ideas? I take this track without OG drum track but with the click or a tempo I can set and throw some drums at this stuff?
@@KirkNowlan I too know other bass players, but none with that special 4-letter-name panache. Would be pretty cool if we can take the "We Three Kirks" and make it real. As for this track, I did not save any of if, though I'd be happy to recreate it within the next few days. Saving the stems separately for transport and replacement.
@@YeOldeThrashDude Yes, stems are cool brother, I will pry your contact details from CM! LOL! \m/
@@YeOldeThrashDude PANACHE! LMAO!
You should listen to The Black Dahlia Murder version of Paint It Black.
Made it halfway through. Could be that it's too early for angry. I'll try again later. I have a historical preference for Glen Tipton's version. It retains the character of the song while injecting some metal energy. Vocals are so-so.
@@YeOldeThrashDude In my experience it is never too early for The Black Dahlia Murder. Either you are going to like it or you aren't. I still love it.
@@thrashnbash314 Flavors, right? I like spicy foods, but not always for breakfast. Likewise, I don't like hot sauce on fruity pebbles, but on pad thai at noon? Perfect. Timing and setting is everything.
@@YeOldeThrashDude Timing and setting certainly can help. For me, either I'm fired up - or I'm sleeping.
@@thrashnbash314 Oh man, I just can't do that. All on, or all off? You can have it. As I talked about in the stream, I believe people generally are more dynamic than that; even you. Breakneck 5 minute intervals of extreme ups and downs all the time is probably indicative of a problem, but ups and downs, twists and turns, and even loops and helices are pretty normal for everyday peeps. Just like when covering a tune, it's all about nuance. TBDM is not nuanced 😅
The guitar is just absolutely beautiful. Came out amazing.
I am very happy with it. I'll be even happier when phase 2 is complete.
That was both cool and lovely.
A mixed bag, right? Dark to light.
@@YeOldeThrashDude Definitely. I didn't find it eerie so much. I did love the sounds of keyboards intertwined
@@thrashnbash314 for the first half I would maybe use the term dark whimsy. Like if Danny Elfman met Thomas Newman and Bach at a party. The doubling is something I love to do whenever I write lead parts. The layering of different timbres really adds intention to the phrases.
Not my style but still cool
I'll take it.
Brilliantly spooky, like vampires and mummies
I'll take it! 👻🧛♀
🤘😎🤘
👁👁 👃 👄 Thanks man!!!!
Awesome cover! Just watched your live and almost didnt recognize you with the hair! That boss part really is something!
It is. It really is. I have an unlisted video from earlier that week of me nailing that part, though the rest of the lead was a little wonky. Let me know if it helps at all. ruclips.net/video/sjqPmFuyOJg/видео.html By the way, the mistakes I made in the final are a testament to how over practicing can sometimes lead to worse results than you might have if you didn't play the same thing for about 3 hours a day for 2 weeks. I should have recorded right then and there. The hair! Man, it's just now getting weird to see me with it. I just chopped it off a couple of months back.
What an ambitious project! And you really did a fantastic job! A pleasure to watch and listen to! 🤘🤘
You know, after you commented on Shades of a Heavenly Death, I "almost" mentioned this one, but I figured if you wanted to find it, you would. Thank you. Ambitious? It was my Mt. Everest. Now for total tracks and videography, this only ranks 3rd, but for memorization and skill level required, it was a 9/10. So thank you very much for your kind words! You are welcome to come back any time.
Heck yeah, GREAT job on a classic! 🤘🤘
Thanks man. It was a challenge!
Great 🎵🎶🎵🎶👍👍👍
