Making History Come Alive! TTRPG Worldbuilding Tips

Every TTRPG world is improved by having a statue with a cone on its head. By that I mean showing how the great events of the past impact people today. I had a lot of fun running around my home town of Glasgow for this one. There's some local history mixed in with some advice which I wish I'd heard before my (many) worldbuilding sessions that went on til 4am. Image of the demolion work at The AB...

Why Don't Your TTRPG Sessions Feel Magical?
Просмотров 485Месяц назад
Let's bring a sense of wonder and mystery to magic in TTRPGs. Our games can so often feel mechanical, where magic acts predictably. Games like DnD are particularly guilty of this. I take a look at how we can change that; and make magic feel... magical! We look at the problems caused by over-analyised magic systems, and what it looks like to implement "soft magic" at our tables. The Renegade Rol...

Diversity! Deicide? TTRPG Talk with Adam Hancock of Gnome Made Games
So as part of character creation (session 0) you ask your players for their characters priorities and goals and then create the adventure with these in mind to build in the tough choices? Not sure I’d have the skill to weave in something for each of the players that doesn’t come across as contrived 😊
Asking directly can be really useful - both for players and GMs. In a game I'm a player in I gave my GM a list of character priorities in order, and she did a great job of weaving them in. Other times those priorities are emergent through play - in the example in the video, my character Juliana had absolutely zero plans to betray the party before the encounter with Strahd, but in that moment she realised that she didn't have as much reason to stay with the party as she did to find her brother (which was potentially a failure on our part to not make stronger character connections!)
All fantastic advice! The Statue of the Duke of Wellington will feature in my game now!
Haha! That's great to hear! I love the idea of a kind statue looking after the people who looked after him (basically the opposite of the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who) Very much enjoyed your Types of Combat video... though now I'm looking VERY carefully at my microphone to make sure it's not a mimic! ps Discord RenegadeRich if you're up for some tiny but mighty RUclipsr chat?
That gives me some things to think on, thanks for the excellent video!
You're very welcome - making these videos is also really good for me to clarify my thoughts on stuff, it's only when I write it down I seem to go "huh, do I actually think that?" The listing of character goals was one I'd been thinking about for ages, but it took prepping this video to realise there was a way to do it systematically.
I love the fact this comes out just after my PC Summer in our DnD campaign had to make the tough choice whether to bury her personality and identity as an entertainer to join the lycan gang or stick to her ideals and go her own path but by becoming an enemy to them. Yes she's a goodie-two-shoes and she will try to somehow find that third option that no one considered or nobody knew existed where lycans no longer have to live in shadow and she gets to get closer to the gang members but the path going there will be bumpy to say the least. It's not a journey I ever expect to be easy since no story that I know of ever goes beyond the fact that "well, lycans just kinda turn evil on a full moon and eat people, nothing you can do about it", putting them in a societal stranglehold where whether or not they get any choice or say in the matter just becomes a non-decision, kind of like stealing a player's agency would. So I already experimented a ton with the idea in one of my own campaigns where Shifters and lycans kind of undergo a spiritual training to gain perfect control of their lycanthropic side and wanted to see how other DMs would tackle that sort of thing by making a character who left her tribe too early to gain that ability. So now we're in this really awesome predicament where she _knows_ of lycans who do **not** go crazy and also lycans who **do** and her mission becomes figuring out how to become that bridge so that she doesn't just spread false hope but actually makes a difference for the betterment of lycan lives.
Great comment! I'm really enjoying our Sunday DnD game. My favourite part of it is seeing the thought and care that you all (especially you!) have put into your characters. It makes it really fun for me as GM to throw more nuanced obstacles in the characters way. Yes you'll have to fight monsters, and specters (and potentially the entire armed forced of Narnia) - but the interesting challenges are now like you've said: how will this character react to a situation where she is in a uniquely difficult place... she's not even in her own universe any more!
This Lucas Frost Jr. sounds very handsome.
Can confirm... and played with style by a certain Salty Nick! ps I probably won't make him choose between his life and the king... but I'm curious what he'd give up his new hurdy gurdy for?
@@RenegadeRolls Been thinking about this. "Lots of things" is the answer but I suppose the most interesting one is "what would make him think twice". Not sure yet. :)
“Toys are there to be played with.” What a wonderful and refreshing way to look at our campaign worlds! This vid was awesome!
Thank you! It's something I really should stickynote to my GM screen. Looking back on some of my old campaign notes, there's a REALLY strong example of the Sunk Cost Fallacy: where because I had put so much time and detail into the setting and lore, that when it came to game time, I was reluctant to allow big changes to happen in the world. Now my games are much lower prep, and I think better for it - even if I do have to improvise a lot more.
This is great advice, thank you!
great video! looking forward to seeing more from you :D
I think, one of the most smart worldbuilding method is doing FromSoftware way: build a civilization then destroy, build another one on top of the ruins then destroy it too. Doing this enough of times, you won't need to info dump. There will be no one that can info dump. There will be gaps but they're justified bauacse everything is ruined.
Am I a masochist. I create worlds in my head, and want players to wreck them?
Yes. Yes you are... but weirdly it's the healthiest attitude to have. Few things bring more joy than seeing my players forment revolutions in towns they visit. It happens with unnerving regularity tbh!
I *love* your retellings of local events in the language of D&D.
Thank you! I had loads on a list that didn't make the cut - my favourites were: Two factions alike in villainy who have been warring for so long that they have formalised their battles into a sport which only occassionally spills over into actual fighting. - Rangers and Celtic A palace built by the people, for the people - right in the poorest part of the city. - The People's Palace
Amazing video. Especially your examples helped so much by showing exactly how to make this work
Great system. I've used it for horror sci-fi and whimsical fantasy, cyberpunk and gritty westerns. Low HP and easy mechanics that don't get in the way of the game. Great online community too.
A great use off accents is for shibboleths. We could tell what street someone was from, or what school they went to, back in the day, and by this determine "what foot they kicked with". Hilarity and sectarian violence were equally possible outcomes. A great example of this is the bar scene in Inglorious Basterds, although that was more gesture related than accent. Dialect words added to the accent adds to the mix. I moved to Grampian many years back and was bewildered when asked if I wanted a "fancy piece with my fly". To me a fancy piece was a posh sandwich and a fly was a fly. In fact I had been asked if I wanted a bit of cake with my cup of tea.
Saw the Duke. Must be a Weegie, says I. RPGs? Attention grabbed. You have a new sub, comrade.
Heheh brilliant - I approve of the efficiency of your decision making. Happy to have you here!
Awesome
Thanks for an entertaining presentation of incisive takes.
Love this! Instant subscription.
Great video. Great to see Rich on the road, those story fragments were really fun!
The stories were a lot of fun to put together - ps the city of Glaschu i mention is Scots Gaelic for Glasgow
I just recently fully comprehended that I am also a LLM so I should just respond appropriately to players. I need to prep the scene a bit to understand what's in front of the group, but it just works. My best scenes are when i am fully present and ignoring the cognitive load
Wise words there - the big challenge is being fully present when as GM you're spinning a load of plates, even if it's just to make sure the session wraps up on time. I now prep the scenario, and the motivations of my NPCs: if I know who they are, I'll know exactly how they'll respond to anything the players can throw at them!
I love this concept and thank you for putting words to something I’ve been struggling with <3
You have a great ear for story telling about story telling. Cheers
That's a very unique compliment! Thank you! Hopefully the actual stories were fun too - I had to cut them waaay down from what I had in my script - especially the one about the statue that gains sentience! He'll maybe make a comeback in another video...
Another fantastic video!
This was a completely random video on my suggested list and I'm glad it was! There were a good number of tips in here I've never heard before and I listen to a lot of DMing advice videos and have played for a long time. I'll be watching more of your stuff
Aw thank you! The Great Unknowable Algorithm remains a total mystery to me, but I’m really glad it led you here! I try my best to find interesting takes on things, and stuff that I’ve not seen elsewhere. As someone who also watches a LOT of DnD/TTRPG videos, it’s a challenge sometimes!
🥳🫂👍🏿
Most spellcaster classes can be "split" into a "master/minion" variety. So a druid can either have learned it through study or they might have been gifted by some form of natural spirit. If they learned it through study the class works as it always have. But if the player wants to be a minion they keep the skill list but instead of earning spells they earn the ability to ask the spirit to help them. (Doesn't quite work with for example warlocks they have their own mechanics for their interaction with their boss. But most classes can be done that way.) Now you don't always know how your spirit will help out but it will help. You don't get to say "I want to cast X" you instead say "please help me in this fight" and the GM then decides what spells gets flung around. As a tradeoff you get 20% boosted exp alongside a novel play style that works if even just one player wants to run a more chaotic way while the rest of the table wants to stay traditional. It's not a perfect solution but its a way to introduce a wilder/softer system to the table without stuffing it down the throat of the guy who wants to play hos class/race combo his way.
Congrats on a viral video! Super helpful, fun history, and great editing definitely make it deserving of the thousand views it's garnered in a day, my friend. I'm definitely going to be using that second tip about 'time and place for everything' to shape up my upcoming adventure with my friends this December to make a big paradigm shifting event in the world. Looking forward to another video :D
I've been using a homebrew world that I've spent over 20 years expanding on. Tons of crap that's ultimately(probably) only for my own entertainment. When a campaign ends I usually roll the story forward 10-20 years and let the characters succeed in their goals. For example I had a group that played bad guys and ended up establishing a cult. Now after the campaign ended that cult have flourished and grown into a large villainous faction. And in the new campaign the heroes wind up facing off against the original founders as the next BB.
I love this approach, but also like it within characters lives. This also lets you play different kinds of campaigns. Like maybe in the first campaign your characters are young adventurers, but their victory leads to them being granted lands and titles and settling down. Fast forward to fifteen years later, and now some threat is encroaching, but instead of just a group of adventurers, they now have retinues to lead into battle against different kinds of threats.
No matter how dramatic past or current events, life goes on, and people cope with it. And someone will probably put a cone on it. If you want your life-changing lore to seem realistic, make it dull. For example, if you do have two empires locked in a thousand-year war, the place to look is probably somewhere like North/South Korea and India/Pakistan. Yes, there's tension and skirmishes, but the war has become very formalised. Maybe the yearly peace talks have become a festival people look forward to. Maybe there's one valley where soldiers stare at each other from barricades, while on literally every other part of the border people are trading and commuting. There's a popular series of plays about the war, played in both empires with the names switched around. The evil emperor's ambassador is coming to the wedding of the lord tyrant's daughter next week.
That's a really interesting idea about intentionally making things dull. I think it's a really fun motivation for a character: "why are you adventuring?" "because I was bored" is awesome - and would make a fun character to play. The dull background worldbuilding also totally works for horror settings too. It's only once "normal" is established that you can twist it with something scary. ps great to meet another Eluvietie fan! They're so so good... and the lyrics are great inspiration for worldbuilding!
The last character I played was an man servant, who had come looking for the ranger in the party, who had run away from home. My previous character had a more typical tragic backstory but no real connection to the other player characters, so when he died, this new character made for more interesting roleplay.
Basically. You can't be at war for a thousand years and have too much going on. There'll be skirmishes, and the borders will change here and there, likely back and forth around strategic points, but nothing dramatic. things that truly change things up tend to be fairly quick, with a long aftermath of people putting things back together.
Great video! Earned my subscription!
Aww thank you! It was a lot of fun to make - I'm still amazed there was no-one pulling faces in the background of my sections at the statue. It's even more of a Glasgow tradition than giving statues traffic cone hats!
I LIVE in that dark playground.
I really love this! Thank you for sharing good advice and glimpses of real-world history around you. Very inspiring! I swear I thought that traffic cone on the thumbnail was a flex of your Photoshop skills and not the real deal 😅
You mean you don't routinely give traffic cone hats to your statues? In Glasgow there's genuine outcry whenever the city council remove it. Luckily some enterprising (drunk) person rectifies this at the earliest opportunity (the next Friday night)
this was such a charming video; here's to your deserved future success 🥂
Whoa! You are awesome at this!
Ah, show not tell. GM Gold right there 👍
Always! The Wizard voice is a lot of fun to do (though it hurts my throat as much as the death metal Demon voice) I love the idea of places having different meanings and different uses over time. The dungeon that our heroes cleared out could become a storm shelter for the people in times of need... the party now need to defend the villagers from whatever creatures are left: a very different "win condition" for the dungeon than the first time they were there!
Wise words and inspiring thoughts!
Keep up the good work!
🥳🫂 👍🏿
As to 2:40, I catch myself worldbuilding while writing the Secrets & Clues part of prep. Usually deep stuff the PCs aren't likely to find out during the session.
Great video and spot-on tips that can equally apply to any GM running one-shots for new players 😊👍
That was a really fun intro! And this is the first time I've seen the min-max side of you, Rich! ;) On pregen characters, it really depends on the player. If someone asked me to play a new system but said I *had to* use a pregen character, it would be an immediate no from me, because making characters is such an important part of the TTRPG experience for me. <-- Dan, making entirely custom parties in Baldur's Gate since 1998. That said, I wouldn't expect the GM to help me out with character creation, either, but I guess it could do down badly with other players if only one ends up with a custom character. I guess the "talk to your players" advice is key here.
There's definitely loads of styles of play - I get across later in the video that all different ways of playing TTRPGs are valid. As usual talking to your players is the way to go, especially before a game. If folks have time to make characters then great, but for a pickup one-shot I'd prefer to get to playing asap. For anyone curious, that AC30 Fighter / Wizard combo character in the intro is totally possible. Dan can show you how: ruclips.net/video/zpd_KKz6jZE/видео.html
A lot of good advice here, well done!
This video is a treasure trove of great advice. Keep up the wonderful work!
I just kinda say, "Group, I've got this RPG I want to try. We'll do a one shot and if we like it we can add more. Oh, you want to play that other RPG? Cool, so you're GMing, right? No? Alright then, well I'm going to be GMing this one. I'm sure we'll get back to the other one too."
Tough love for your players :D
