There is, within each and every moment of experience - regardless of the context, quality or any other elements of that experience - an element that is inexpressible, formless, hidden and non objectifiable. This element is the *bare knowing* or experiential element of that and all possible experiences. Within any experience, free of all contexts, qualifiers or appearances of all "other" elements of that experience, only its bare knowing is what is meant by "consciousness." This conscious element of bare knowing is however "concealed" behind the appearing particulars of each experience - which qualify and obscure it by means of attraction, aversion and distraction. The conscious element of bare knowing cannot ever be perceived as an object of an awareness, in the same way that the eye cannot ever directly see itself. When analyzing this or in meditating on this, if any aspect of this experience (of knowing) appears as an *object* appearing to an awareness of it, that appearance is then NOT the knowing element, but is merely an appearing element. This last point is crucial to understanding the nature of reality because grasping cannot be "released" as long as one holds onto objective appearances. None the less, there is nothing within any experience, no matter the context, quality or any other elements of that experience, that is inherently attractive, aversive or distracting within that experience, and therefore there is nothing that actually conceals, obscures or inhibits its knowing element. There is nothing to grasp. If all this is known in a single instant of experiencing, that experience is itself pure being or "consciousness." Whatever analysis or verbal explanation follows from that experience is NOT itself an actual presentation of the element of knowing, but is merely a conceptual elaboration - like a finger pointing the way. Sitting alone in silence (meditation) is an invaluable method - analogous to the experience of recognizing the bare knowing element - that serves as a conditioning template for the eventual pervasive and persistent experience of this "knowing." In other words, analysis of experience should be alternated with silent (non thinking) meditation and this process is to be repeated continuously and progressively. 🙏❤
