Imagine being coerced by a powerful institution to breed your genetics - all while knowing that your children would be put into a coma and enslaved, without any autonomy or dignity. This is one of the subjects of N. K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth trilogy, and this song depicts the state of mind of the troubled man who decides to end the institution’s wicked reign. The ballad features a haunting vocal solo trading off with a slow and sad guitar melody.
