      Thank you for the comment! Yes, the LFK has become forgotten unfortunately. It’s such a great knife and its mechanism needs to be reintroduced. Imagine a BM Bushcrafter-style knife with that mechanism and a sturdy lock. It would sell well I think!

    Ive got a small size genuine troodon and a full size vespa clone. The genuine knife ive had for 3 years and with maybe 8 months of dedicated use, the springs now sometimes fail to fire the blade all the way out. By comparison, the vespa has way more power when firing. I've had it longer and it never fails to deploy. I just dont see the value in the real deal...

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC День назад

      I hear you! I love having the genuine model but Vespas are my EDC for various reasons. My Vespa Scarab is by far my favorite OTF and if I drop it, so what? It was 1/4th the price of my genuine model. If has virtually no blade play, has M390 steel and it’s never misfired. I genuinely enjoy every Vespa I have and I’ve had less issues, well 0 issues, with them compared to my authentic Microtechs. I get accused of pushing counterfeit products but in reality I’m only being honest. Thank you for commenting and take care!

      Hey my friend, I’ll add the link below. The non-serrated dagger edge is hard to come by at the moment but there should be more available in the near future. “China High-End EDC” is the store I typically use on DHgate or AliExpress but there are others that sell Vespa products. Be aware of the $50 Gen IIIs for sell, they’re good as well but they aren’t what’s in this video. a.aliexpress.com/_mruwLXE

    It's gotten a lot better, but one of the big problems with the Chinese clones isn't necessarily the construction of any particular example, it's that you never know what you're going to get. I have a few clones and a few real MTs. Obviously with the real MT you know exactly what you're getting every time. I've had clones show up without the springs installed, with a plastic body instead of aluminum, wrong dimensions, finish, or hardware style for the knife they're cloning, etc. Then if you actually get a good one, which happens, especially with recent Ultratech clones, you can't decide a year later to get another, because the listing and original seller are long gone.

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC День назад

      You’re absolutely right. When it comes to the counterfeit market, quality ranges wildly. If I find a good brand and seller I generally stick to them. Vespa, HiFinder, Miker and Jufule tend to be the most reliable in my experience. The pages are always being taken down as you said but from my experience, emailing them helps a lot. Thanks for commenting and take care!

    My Gen 3 rattles the same as this. My Hellhound Signature Series, Signature Series Delta Frag Combat Troodon, Signature Series Scarab 3, UTX-85, Magnacut and m390 ultratechs all have 0 to barely noticeable play. The longer blade has to have something to do with it. I edc the Gen 3 half serrated, even with blade play it still takes a beating and no issues. Just got home from running some errands and my elderly neighbor was struggling with some boxes, so my Gen 3 just got some more use cutting through plastic packing straps and cardboard like nothing. Blade play stays the same after use, it doesn't get any better or worse, so I guess it just is what it is.

    On the Vespa how does it hold an edge? And how is it to sharpen? Most if these clones, you can’t sharpen because it is too soft.

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC 8 дней назад

      I’d say the Vespa is really comparable to the genuine model actually. I haven’t sharpened my genuine M390MK Gen III but I have sharpened my M390 Gen II and other M390 knives many times. They’re both tough to sharpen and I can’t really say if one is softer than the other. Now, every other clone besides Vespa that I’ve had has soft steel that’s easy to sharpen, takes a sharp edge but dulls very quickly (HiFinder, etc). Vespa seems to actually use the steel advertised and they do a good job with their heat treat, there are some independent tests that compare them. I saw one on Reddit fairly recently. I hope this helps!

    • @keeperoftruth5951
      @keeperoftruth5951 6 дней назад

      Maybe 5 years ago but most clones that cost over $40 are using quality steel. The twilight years of the American knife manufacturing sector as a whole is not looking good. Wish it wasn't the case but we got beat in our game and we let it happen

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC 3 дня назад

      Unfortunately I think you’re right. Even $40 clones are using 7075 aluminum for the body compared to 6061 used by many American makers. I’ve dropped clones and genuine MTs, for example, and it’s absolutely obvious that the aluminum is better quality on the clones. There’s still a lot of clones out there that use poor quality steel but there’s plenty that don’t. People assume they’re all pot metal but it’s just as easy to obtain M390 or other higher quality steels in China. It really is impressive what they do for the price. My Vespa Scarab M390 was $170, my genuine Scarab was $600. I sold my genuine Scarab after getting the Vespa.

    Don’t know what everyone is expecting from mass produced production level knives. I own a gen 2 combat troodon and the firing switch has some play in it, is it the end of world? No. Was the pocket clip crooked? Bought a tool bit and fixed it myself. The customs wouldn’t exist with the tighter tolerances if people didn’t buy the production models. The only problem is most of us here can’t afford the exorbitant prices for the customs and are stuck with production models. I’ll say this, the 500$ price tag was worth ever penny. It hasn’t malfunctioned in the two years I’ve owned it. Remoil and a blast of compressed air each month and it still fires like the day it left the factory.

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC 2 дня назад

      To be fair, the Gen II Combat Troodon is supposed to have switch play as it has a spring underneath the switch unlike the Dirac. As for what people should expect, I’d say for the price issues like this are unacceptable. Particularly when there are issues that can’t be fixed by the buyer (incorrectly drilled blade holes, etc.) As for the custom Microtechs, from my experience and the experience of others there’s absolutely no difference in the tolerances. My custom CT was no different in that respect to my production models. I thought it would’ve been too honestly. It was one reason I purchased it and I know EdgedMindset thought the same too. Again, just my experience. Take care and thanks for commenting!

  • @whatfor5
    @whatfor5 17 дней назад

    Your story of instant dulling sounds like edge drag to me. If the knife's geometry isn't right the edge will ride on one of the latches or on the handle track itself. Given that tape isn't very dulling, even against a crap heat treat, that sounds like what might be happening to you. I bought two microtechs. First one I thought must be some kind of un-funny joke it was so bad. Bought a second and it was even worse. And it isn't just aesthetics and fitment, the heat treats on both is remarkably poor. Edge geometry is also pretty questionable. We're these made as cutting tools or toys? Will not be buying a third. I did buy a Kershaw Livewire and (from my sample size of 1) have been extremely impressed. Every single aspect is better. From fitment to edge retention to blade geometry. How does Kershaw do it for half the price?

    Ewww why do you support counterfeits? You really think that’s m390? That’s just bumper steel. You are supporting counterfeit operations and hurting real knife companies. Also these counterfeits are smuggled into the country usually and are not legal either. OTF produced outside the USA are not allowed to be imported. Remember that counterfeiters participate in all kinds of shady practices and the $$ goes back to communist China/terrorists. Think human smuggling, drug dealers, etc.

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC Месяц назад

      No, I’m reviewing two knives honestly for what they are while being as objective as I can be. I don’t have an attachment to any brand but I’ve said many times that I like Microtech, I support them, I want them to succeed and I want them to fix their customer service/quality control (which is the reason I looked into Vespas to begin with). Solely because I like them. I’ve had about $7.5K+ worth of their products over the years. These videos also help people identify a counterfeit product so they don’t get scammed - I’ve been told this several times. I’m sure you realize that counterfeits have gotten extremely good and it’s harder and harder to tell which is which. I’ve never bought a counterfeit without buying the real version either. Not once. As for the M390, yes I do. In this case. 99% of advertised blade steel on AliExpress, Wish, DHGate, etc. is false advertising, of course, but there are makers that actually use the real thing and it’s rather easy to verify. M390 in particular is easy to obtain. Last point before I get off the soap box - I’ve said in my videos that counterfeits and clones have a place. It’s not black and white. Many people buy one and like it so they save to buy a real Microtech or Benchmade. It’s what many have done including myself. Virtually no one ever “prefers” the counterfeit - it’s just a bridge until they can afford the real thing. If they can never afford it, they were likely never going to be a customer anyway. If not for my first fake Ultratech I would’ve never bought an actual Microtech. I know it’s a long reply but I feel strongly about this. Take care my friend.

    I recently purchased Vespa Combat Troodon in the classic design because I wanted a John Wick knife. I'd prefer the original Microtech any day, but I live in Russia and Russian law limits the blade length of automatic knives (OTF and Button Lock) to 90mm. Although they are not considered edged weapons, they are prohibited for circulation. So, unfortunately, it is almost impossible to purchase an original Troodon in my country. We have to console ourselves with Ultratech. 😁

      @GigiEDC Месяц назад

      Thank you for your comment, your country is great by the way! I visited there and miss it very much although the knife laws should be changed. After all, criminals don’t follow the laws anyway. The Vespa is great even when compared to the original. If it’s your only option, you’re getting great quality at a great price. The Vespa Scarab is even better than the Vespa Combat Troodon too if you’re looking for another. Take care and I wish you the best!

    The blade weight is going to be directly correlated to the strength of spring needed to launch it stiffly and force needed to deploy it, so when they skeletonize the blade, the switch would have gotten a bit lighter to activate. Considering theyre still a bit of a PITA im not too mad at it.

      Anytime! It made me nervous too coming from full tang is king fixed blades but they really are little marvels of engineering, MT deserved their profit but i think theyve taken it to a point of explotation, at some point we gotta call it public domain for the sake of healthy competition. Your review of the vespa CT Gen3 gave me the confidence to pull the trigger and I'm absolutely thrilled with the purchase, if they don't want to make an affordable otf somebody else will lol. Appreciate ya!

    • @GigiEDC

      Brother I absolutely agree. Although their original mechanism wasn’t made by them, Microtech deserves their profit because of the innovation they’ve brought to the OTF world. Especially recently with the dual fuel system and the new Atreus’s lock up mechanism. Like you said though - there’s a fine line between profit and gouging. Their customer service is what originally sent me to Vespa though, not the prices. I hope they realize these things. I hope you enjoy your OTF my friend and I’m glad I could help!

    what really pisses me off on these knives is the moronic longitudinal grooves the top and bottom sides of the knife. if there was a flat surface, then you could use an anti-slip self adhesive tape, but no chance with these grooves (at least if you don't remove them manually). and about using underwater, well, again, this is marketing, partly for the above reason. the knife absolutely does not give a chance for reliable retention!

    Clones are a plague on the knife industry. When you buy a counterfeit, you're supporting some of the worst people - people who smuggle drugs, counterfeits, humans, etc.

    • @GigiEDC
      @GigiEDC 2 месяца назад

      While I have no evidence that knife counterfeiters are sex trafficking or selling drugs, I see your point. As a point of principle I won’t buy a clone without buying the original so the genuine manufacturer doesn’t lose a sale and I just enjoy comparing them. The sad part is that SO many people are being scammed online thinking they’re buying the real thing. I’m working on buying several Benchmades and their clones to help identify the differences. They seem to be faked more than anyone and it’s gotten out of control. Thanks for your comment and take care!
