    I’ve had my baby crested gecko for about a month now and have only been able to hold him once. (I usually just hold my open hand near him and stay still but he eventually runs away) Whenever I try to get him he runs away and hides and doesn’t come back out. I don’t want to stress him so I leave him be for a couple days but nothing works. Not sure what to do…. Also should I be waiting until he’s awake and active at night or should I be waking him durning the day to practice handling?

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters 29 дней назад

      A lot of that will change with time as long as you consistently work with her. It can be really helpful to reach in and just let your hand hang out there and then wait for her to calm down so she can learn that your hand isn't scary. If she likes bugs offering them on tongs can be a great way to get her to come toward you rather than feeling like you are chasing her. And then giving it time is the most important factor because she has to learn that you aren't going to hurt her. :-D

    I did get a crested gecko. Got a sub adult. He looks just like snowflake you just showed at beginning of the video but he also has Dalmatian spots. He is 25 grams and I have him in 12x12x18 enclosure. I did paper towel for a week and then switched it with eco earth. His humidity stays above 60% most of the time but hardly ever goes over 80%. Sometimes it will drop to 50%. The eco earth helps with the humidity. I can go 3 or 4 days before I have to mist 1 to 2 times. It’s pretty humid where I live. He drinks from his water bowl. He also only ate 1 roach. Can’t get him to eat another one. He actually walks away and turns his head away from them. But I feed him the Pangea figs with insects. Most the roaches I have I feed to our hamsters. They love them.

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters 29 дней назад

      Congratulations on your new gecko! Your humidity situation is definitely a reason that "blanket advice" is so hard to do. You definitely have to adapt it to what works for you, in your area, and your enclosure type. I'm glad that it sounds like you have figured out the humidity part. Some crested geckos just don't like bugs and others like certain bugs but not others. You can also try dipping the roach in the Pangea to see if he will eat it that way. :-D

  • @lovelydreamer5575
    @lovelydreamer5575 Месяц назад

    Also, just because you get a gecko for less than 3 digits doesn’t mean they weren’t cared for properly. I got mine from an expo for $60 and all of that vendors geckos had their tails and looked very healthy. You’re not even paying high dollar for quality but more so for the morph itself. I got my second one from Petco on sale half off and it was also a healthy gecko and I only paid $44 for that one. He eats more than the one I got at the expo too.

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters Месяц назад

      It's true...Just because a gecko is less expensive doesn't mean that it wasn't properly cared for. However, an inexpensive gecko may very well be less cared for. Many people started breeding crested geckos thinking that they would be able to make good side money (or even a full time income from it) and have become burned out, tired, and overworked so when they are selling their geckos cheap it is possible that they might not be taking care of them. (I have talked with a few people who I believe that to be the case of at shows we have vended). I start my geckos at $75 and they are all cared for well whether they are going to be sold for two digits or three. As for pet store geckos...the general statements don't necessarily mean any one gecko at a pet store isn't healthy, but...the geckos bred for chain pet stores are mass produced and that makes it less likely that bad things were weeded out and that inbreeding was avoided. They are also less likely to be taken care of at the breeding facility (in a way that a person would care for them). There are some amazing pet store employees who love the animals and take amazing care of them, but some pet stores don't have that and then the gecko isn't cared for at the store. I'm very glad that your gecko is healthy and happy, but...I still don't recommend buying animals (geckos or otherwise) from chain pet stores. (I bought my chameleon from Petsmart so I am not immune to how adorable they can look...sadly he has not been a super healthy chameleon and the vet believes it is bad genetics because of his breeding...I still love him though and will do my best to keep him as healthy as I can for all of his days).

  • @lovelydreamer5575
    @lovelydreamer5575 Месяц назад

    Because I use a plastic bin type enclosure, I don’t mist at all. I provide them with 2 water bowls. One for keeping humidity up and one to drink from. Misting was keeping the enclosure to wet inside for 2 long. As far a diet, I do give mine a variety, not just powdered diet alone. Sometimes they get mushy carrots , bananas, etc with calcium and bugs added and they love it. Sometimes they get bugs alone. Love my babies and check on them daily and clean their enclosure weekly as well as daily spot cleaning.

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters Месяц назад

      I'm so glad that you love your geckos. :-D There are definitely multiple ways to keep animals and keep them well. Personally, I think each person does need to evaluate humidity according to the enclosure types and their natural environment (someone in North Carolina will naturally have higher humidity than someone in Utah) to determine what works best for them, but I would still recommend misting at least occasionally. Many lizards don't like drinking out of water bowls and may be dehydrated if there are never water droplets to drink. I have even started misting my leopard geckos enclosure because I just learned that morning dew is one of their main sources of water and they are much more likely to be properly hydrated if they have water droplets available for drinking. When crested geckos were first kept it was common to feed them mushed or blended fruit with bugs or baby food with bugs and many of them weren't getting enough minerals and would in turn develop MBD. It's so sad that MBD is so prevelant in many commonly kept reptiles because people don't realize how important the supplementation is, but in crested geckos it isn't that common if people are feeding a high quality meal replacement powder because they are getting enough calcium and micronutrients to help them avoid that issue. So feeding a varied diet can be a good thing, but it needs to be done very carefully with a lot of research and it is probably better for most people to just stick with the prepared diet.

    what do you feed your tricolors?

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters Месяц назад

      I believe that tricolors eat really well and most will readily take mice. My experience has definitely been so. Some do feed a varied diet and I do believe it is probably better for them, but I am also afraid to offer them choices and then make it so that they aren't easy feeders. Some do believe that feeding them an all mice diet shortens their lifespan, but without further research I believe it is hard to know for sure and they already have a shorter lifespan than most snakes.

      When I purchase new isopods I put them right into 6 quart bins. I bought a few larger bins from other people off of Craigslist and decided I liked the 6 quart ones better because they are easier to stack on the shelf and it is easier to control the humidity in the bins, so I have never moved a colony to a larger bin, but I do have a few that need the substrate replaced and to do that I will pretty much start a new bin and then move as many over as I can. I can do a video of that and show you my process for refreshing their setup. :-D

      This is most likely just fine. :-D They really can do well on almost anything, just benefit from things that work well for them to eat. They won't eat mulch until it starts to break down so it works more as a filler than a snack, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad or wrong. The organic planting mix likely has lots of stuff in there that they can eat as well.

    A Q-tip with a little isopropyl alcohol on it works well; just touch the Q-tip to your skin beneath its grasp, they will let go - don't put it in their mouth as the alcohol can damage the snakes mouth, typically the evaporating vapor is enough to make the release. If this does not work, try a gentle stream of water over the bit site... Prying a snake off of you skin can damage the snake and your skin. There are other methods to be sure, however, these have worked best for me in the past.

      She definitely has a bigger mouth than anything I have been bitten by at this point. :-P There was a little girl at a show who was probably 4. She had her hands in a bin of baby rats playing with them and then a guy with a burm came in and she ran over to pet the snake. He was encouraging her because he didn't realize that she was playing with the rats before hand and the mom was clueless. I was like, "Don't let her near the snake!" (Probably sounded like one of those people who wants to protect little kids from big snakes) and then was like, "She was playing with the baby rats!" Both the mom and the burm owner were glad I had realized what could potentially happen. The little girl loved all animals too...it would have been terrible for her love of critters if she had been bitten by that burmese python. I'm glad you survived your bite. :-P

    • @danellescritters
      @danellescritters 2 месяца назад

      Congratulations on your new "baby"! Often times adult crested geckos who have their tails will keep them as long as there isn't a breeding related incident. That being said, in February one of my adult females dropper her tail while in an enclosure all by herself so...it can happen for no known reason. Geckos are going to breath kind of fast, but mostly in the throat area is where you see it when they aren't stressed out. If they are breathing really fast in the chest area it is usually a sign of stress as are the adorable noises that they make. The number one thing to do at this point is to keep handling sessions fairly short if she is showing signs of stress and to try and end on a positive note. I know that hand feeding gets a bad rep, but it is a great way to show the gecko that you aren't just something scary. :-D I'm glad you enjoyed the video and hope you enjoy others as well!

      Apollo is great at coming forward (she definitely loves her bugs), but she definitely isn't a "cuddly" leo. :-P I am very glad that she can live her best live here though and get taken care of. It's sad that so many animals are abandoned in terrible circumstances. Joker sounds like a lot of fun. A lot of people ask me how easy it is to handle leopard geckos and I'm like, "Well...Apollo is a terrible example". It is really cool to see each one has their own personality though.

      Crested geckos feel very different from leopard geckos and gargoyle geckos feel different from both other types of geckos. :-D Leopard geckos are land geckos so they don't have the suction cup feet and that makes a very different feel. Crested geckos are really sticky and will climb right up the glass, but gargoyle geckos don't do that so much and their feet feel very different because of it. Just remember that short and regular handling sessions is the biggest key. I hear a lot of people who are all like, "He doesn't enjoy handling and so I don't do it." which works as long as it works for the people involved (I don't handle my leopard gecko who clearly doesn't like it), but it also doesn't let the relationship grow. I firmly believe if the time is put into it then you can grow the relationship. :-D I started working with Pin (the grumpy gargoyle gecko) last week. We will see how it goes. :-D

    Great video! I have wild caught native isopods, and I use a good potting medium for substrate. The only trees we have around her are elms, and my neighbor’s yard is where I got the isopods, so I can get some established in my compost bin and new flower beds. I have wood from an elm tree stump, probably cut down 30 years or so ago, that my neighbor dug up and it’s beautifully decayed and rotted. I took all of the stump, and also collected bark from another dead tree and that’s my wood for them. I do scald and bake the wood and bark because we have fire ants here and wood roaches. But because I’ve sanitized it, before I put any wood “crumbles “ in my terrariums that all my isopods are in, I soak the wood for a couple days so it gets nice and hydrated. I feed romaine, zucchini, powdered roach chow, other greens when I have them, and now and then bits of apple. Fish flakes are a fave, and when I have dead crickets I’ll toss one or two in each terrarium. And the molts from my dubias. Egg shells that I wash and pulverize in my food processor. I grew pumpkins last summer and the small decorative ones kept well in the fridge, so I chopped them up in food processor and used Knox gelatin and combined with grated carrots, spinach, apple and froze the mixture by spoonfuls on a cookie sheet then bagged it. My isopods, dubias, crickets and dogs love it. I let it thaw and they go nuts for it.

      They are amazing. I'm totally in love with them as well and love watching them come out and explore their turf. I'm going to do a giant bioactive build for them! It should be so much fun to watch them in it. The baby will eventually be able to go in with the adults as well creating a trio of beauties in there. :-D It sucks about the restrictions. So often they are created with good intentions (like making it so people don't take them from the wild, to try and protect people from dangerous species, or to protect nature from potentially invasive species), but so often they don't accomplish their goals while also making it where law abiding members of society can't have amazing critters. Here they have banned the black and white tegu because they feel the potential is too great that it could become invasive even though studies say it gets too cold here. :-P Oh well though, at least we can admire animals we can't have on videos or in places like reptile zoos and such.

      @@danellescritters a bioactive would be A-mazing! Will you be recording the build? I'm planning out a 4x2x2 for my Brazilian rainbow boa, but have to wait for warmer weather so I can work outside. I agree on the restrictions being largely ineffective. Some are even counter-productive for conservation breeding programs, if people working with them can't get new bloodlines across state lines. There's got to be a balance. We can have tegus in VT, but I really don't have space for an adult enclosure right now. I love watching videos of them and learning, though.

      I am going to record the build! I actually have one I am starting tomorrow that I will be recording. I have never done a custom background so it will be interesting. :-D The first build is 12x12x18 and it will be for our baby giant day gecko and then I'm going to add information for other species. That size enclosure doesn't work forever for all animals, but the info can be applied to bigger enclosures as well. Then I think before the garter snakes enclosure is done I will be doing a huge 4'x2'x4' enclosure for a secret project that I will reveal in the near future. :-D So gonna share a bunch of enclosure stuff coming up!

Now, about 85% of the time, she’ll let me take her out without any fuss and will even hang out on my shirt while I work for short periods. I think there are ways to try and gain their trust.
