How To Care For Shoes: Introduction
I wear a 14 and would assume a 13.5 would be ideal. Apparently, if you are larger than a 13, you're not worthy of that luxury. I've found a couple of quality brands that offer this option but can't understand why the rest (including Jay Butler) don't. Too bad... look like nice shoes.
Hi - Most brands stop half sizes at 12, not 13. We also stop half sizes at 12. The main reason we, and other brands, do this is simply because there is not enough demand in the larger sizes to justify half sizes. We'd like to offer size 12.5, 13.5, etc but it just doesn't make sense for a smaller brand like ours.
I just got my loafers and truly are my new favorite brand, I have loafers from other brands like gh bass and j crew and this one’s are my favorites, only down side is they sell out too quick and can’t get them till they get restock
Thank you and glad you are enjoying your Jays. We just restocked on almost all sizes + colors!
8 years later and here I am. I had 1 come untied. Over the years I’ve always done what you showed as option 3. They do NOT stay. So now I have the one untied and I just tried option 1. I like it and it’s pretty close to the other shoe. I’m going to see how this goes. Thanks!
Glad to hear we've been able to be helpful.
I’ve been using the MDO Renovateur on light colored ostrich and caiman belly with no issues at all
Problem with me is one foot is bigger than the other. So with loafers one is always too big or too loose. I've given up on loafers
I condition my goat skin boots with bickmore after every wear to see what will happen. I use saphir conditioner on my alligator boots about once a month. The alligator boots cost to much to experiment on. I'm curious what would happen to alligator boots if conditioned after each wear?
I use Saphir delicate cream(no wax) once a month then alternate to saphir renovateur(wax)or Reptan(wax)once a month so every two weeks they get a treatment but I rotate between the three as to not build up the waxes but keep my caimans buttery soft. I feel like this process gets all the different oils and minerals from the three products without all the buildup of any one thing especially too much wax. If I only could use one on caiman I’d use Reptan once a month. Hope this helps
@CSwivel I've been considering saphir. Thanks for your help.
Would not advise conditioning alligator (or any leather) after every wear. It is overkill and the leather does not need it - you will end up spending unnecessary time caring for the shoes and not see any additional benefit.

This is the only tutorial that has worked for me so far, thank you very much
Glad we were able to be of assistance
So what happens to my suede shoes if the get wet from rain? Will they melt? 😂
they will not melt. and if your shoes get caught in the rain when you get home take them off, set them on their side, stuff with paper towel, and let them sit for a few hours-day. This will allow the shoes to dry out. Once they are mostly or fully dry place shoe trees in the shoes to help maintain or restore shape. do not put the shoes near a heat source and do not set them in the sun as doing either may deform the leather.
the problem is i have too many loafers. i dot know whic one to pick when i go to beach holiday next time. don't tell me to pick boat shoes.
Can I do this with my Dubarry boat shoes?
Since Dubarry is not our brand we would not want to speak in their place but will generally say that if the boat shoes are made of suede then you could use the same principles discussed in this video
Very well made. Ive worn loafers regularly since high school . I have over a dozen pairs. I rarely wear tennis shoes or lace ups so loafers I wear for everything . GH Bass, Gucci and Jay Butler are the only brands I buy. Jay Butler and Gucci are damn close in quality , they just cost 8-10's more. Jay Butler is my main choice if you prefer an elevated loafer with higher quality than most this brand fits the bill .
Thank you for the support and accurate comparison! We hope you get many more years of good wear from your JBs.
@@jaybutlershoes1702 Thank you very much. Keep making great shoes at a very fair price. Counts for a lot these days.
can i use this on a white loafer?
yes, process to clean and polish white leather shoes is the same, just be sure to use a neutral color cream and polish - do NOT use any pigmented creams or polishes.
I’ve tried over a half dozen styles of penny loafer in the past month, from G.H. to Allen Edmonds to whatever other brands they had at Nordstrom, and the consistent problem is that they fit fine around the toes and ball of my foot but my heel pops out. Then I go a half size down and the whole thing feels way too tight. I just ordered a pair of the Jay Butler Cromwell loafers in the hopes that these will finally be the ones 🤞
We too hope that our loafers are the right fit for you
@@jaybutlershoes1702 thanks!
You know when you have to save the video on the first intro. It shows that the information is high quality
thank you!
When unsure of size, always get them slightly loose. You could always make them snug with insoles and heel pads. I found the "slightly tight pair will stretch out after breaking in" to be untrue. Had to give away a pair that was quite expensive and it was frustrating.
I agree

43 eu is a uk 9, not 8
It's both, depending on the brand.
@@weuek No sorry that’s not true. UK 9 is 43. If the brand is not true to size then that’s the fault of the maker.
@@robfulano2552 The only logically acceptable sizing system is the Japanese insole length.
Socks, yuck
What's wrong with the socks :) ? I like that color, but when I pair socks with loafers and shorts, if I'm not wearing sandals, I'd avoid scrunched socks, though he pulls that off imho.
Nice loafers and sockless is the way to go. 👣
My new loafers run big but I cant return them... What can I do?
Justin Jeffers, in the video, recommends: After applying Saphir Creme Universelle, let the shoes sit for "10 minutes" before buffing off the excess. 3:52 After buffing off the excess, let the shoes sit "a few more minutes" to let it dry out. 4:07 After applying Saphir Shoe Polish Cream, let the shoes sit for "10 ~ 15 minutes" to let the Cream dry before buffing to shine. 5:27
The problem I have with loafers is, that they fit will but the heel has too much space, so when I walk my heel slips out of the shoe, because the loafer doesn't catch it. Or when I move down half a size, the loafer is almost too tight.
Same, i think i have wide feet.
Yep. I think some of us have a very narrow heel and a very wide ball of our foot, which shoes just aren’t designed to accommodate. I’ve ordered the Jay Butler Penny loafers in the hopes that this will finally be the one, because I’ve literally tried over a half dozen other brands with no luck
I have wide feet and I’ve tried a size up…. Yeah that didn’t work, I’m a 8.5 so I went to a 9 (42), to big for me, had to go back to a 8 (41)
@@lukasjr2920heel grips never last on me. They always start to unstick after a few times.
I will say then the shoes actually don’t fit well. Because even if they fit across the toes, your heel should not slip out and it could just be the last shape isn’t one that works for your foot.
I’ve totally given up on loafers as a size 14. They either completely constrict my toes or don’t come in my size! I only have one pair that fit and they only fit in one specific color from Cole Haan!!
Unfortunate, but not unsurprising to hear. It is harder to get a good fit with loafers as you get higher in sizes. Should you be willing to give our loafers a shot - remember that shipping + first return is free on domestic orders over $125 so the risk is very minimal to try them out.
I’ve got a pair of the Jay Butler Cromwell loafers on the way in the hopes they will finally be the ones, because I’ve been having a similar problem. If the toe fits, the heel pops out. If the heel stays in place, the toes are cramped. It’s driving me nuts. BTW which Cole Haan loafer did you try, the pinch loafer? I was considering trying those as well but hadn’t gotten around to it yet
who the heck polishing shoes on a kitchen counter...this is ridiculous
Perhaps that was the best “location” to film the video!

What size would you recommend for someone who is an 8.5 d on the brannock device?
we recommend you start with an 8.5d - just go with whatever size the Brannock device give you. When you get then, be sure to try on on carpet so you do not scratch soles so that if you need to exchange for a different size you will be able to without issue.

1:07 nice toes
What a magnificent shoe!
Very nice video. I gave up on loafers many years ago. I need a tight fit across the vamp area to keep shoes on my feet. The only loafers that did that were Florsheim that had an elstic piece hidden under the high flap on top.
Hi William, Give our shoes a try, they are designed to be snug around the shoes and ball of foot.
What if they fit in the toes but your heel still slips 😢
Hi GN, A few options: 1. try half size smaller if they are not snug around toes (shoes will stretch a bit on width so if snug around toes you'll get a little more space with wear) 2. place some heel pads around the interior of the heel to close space 3. wear as-is 4. return shoes Hope this helps!
I'm from Malaysia and thanks for your videos mate I've learned alot ..I own a Bally Loafer with full grain leather and I will buy Saphir Reno for my shoe 👍👍

Well first of all, he’s running a company, and there’s nothing evil or bad about advertising your product. Second, even though this is focused on his loafers, this is actually good advice that you could apply to any pair of loafers. Why be so negative? He seems like a nice, honest guy trying to run a good business. We need more of those

Why do they skip double D and go right to E ?
Hi Alex - no one really does a DD. They all go from D > E > EE > EEE. We went with EE because E does not give enough extra width for guys with really wide feet - we only plan on have one wide width shoe so its help a greater number of guys than an E width.
@@jaybutlershoes1702 it wasn’t a “personal” type question, per se. Like, why doesn’t Jay Butler skip, it was more a question out of curiosity. It just doesn’t seem like a “linear” progression when it comes to sizing. But you rock for responding. I’m finding out quite quickly how different brands fit SO differently. Especially when different brands use different names for its lasts. It’s a bit frustrating. I’m learning trial and error is a price I must pay for quality footwear that’s not either a sneaker or bought at the mall or retail store. Thanks for the info.
@@alexsherel3344 - trial and error is often the only way to go. the last dictates most of the fit of the shoe and since a last is a unique 3d form the slightest variation from last to last can have big implications on fit, feel and look of a shoe. Loafers are a particular type of difficult since there are no laces or straps to tighten or loosen shoes. Godspeed on your quest to find the right fit.
Never seen or heard of DD
Length is one of the critical factors I neglected when I purchased my first few pairs of loafers. The shoe can feel tight when you first try it on but as the vamp loosens up around the instep, if the shoe is too long and accommodating in the toe box the shoe will be too large.
yes, accurate. We tell our customers that loafers will stretch a little on the width but not the length. However, as the shoes stretch on the width they will seem longer
Hi Justin. Do you recommend to wear sockless loafers in suit or tuxedo?
Hi - for more formal black tie events, wear black silk socks. For less formal ones you can get away without socks but you might get some unfavorable looks. When in doubt, wear socks with a tux. I'm probably 80/20 - 80% of time I do with tux and 20% of time I don't.
You should never wear shoes without socks. It is unhygienic and a sloppy look.
Do you apply the lotion / moisturiser after each use? How does that work?
Hi Jeremy - no do not apply after every use. every 2-4 months will work well, depending on how often you wear your shoes.
@@jaybutlershoes1702 Thanks for answering! Say the usage is averagely 3x a week So the correct way is to moisturise via lotion + polish it (via leather cream or wax) every 3 months on avg. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@jeremylee3827 Yes that should be fine, if you see the leather wearing or look dry at all before then you can use more frequently. Exception being if the shoes get caught in the rain or mud and need a good cleaning - then you might want to address quickly.
