CINEMATIC LIGHTING SECRETS | LIGHTING NIGHT TIME SCENES
Lighting a scene with nine fixtures might sound overwhelming, but here’s how I broke it down for a recent project. From wide shots to tight frames, I’ll show you how I used skylights, tungsten Fresnels, LED fixtures, and creative diffusion to replicate moonlight and enhance the scene.
Discover how each light contributed to the shot, the role of natural haze, and how improvising with tools like China lanterns added the perfect touch. Let’s dive into the details!

HOW TO LIGHT CINEMATIC EXTERIORS: DP LIGHTING BREAK DOWN

Lighting midday scenes can be tricky, especially in harsh sunlight. In this video, I break down how I tackled it for a recent TV show, shooting in an alleyway with limited resources. Using a 20x20 silk for diffusion, a 1200D with a narrow reflector for edges, and natural linen sheets for texture, we shaped the light to create dynamic, cinematic frames. From wide shots to close-ups, I’ll show yo...

Lighting a room at night can make or break a DP’s work, so let’s talk about how I lit this candlelit, first-century-inspired scene. In this breakdown, I’ll show you exactly how we made it happen-sharing behind-the-scenes clips, lighting setups, and tips to pull off that cinematic vibe. We kept it simple with just three lights: a Light Mat Plus 8, a Light Mat Plus 4, and a couple of ARRI 150W Fr...

This is great Rob! Love it
Yeeep. I'm in the same boat. It freaking works, and clients absolutely love that I can shoot video and photos at the same time. I'm using the 24-105 f/2.8 which gives me a ton of range. This camera just makes me feel good.
Nice work! Obviously just commenting off of seeing this video and not seeing the whole scene in context: I think the shot could have benefitted from a little more fill/stronger catchlight and more interest in the background. You kinda lose his presence when you’re playing it low like that.
@@NicolasWaldvogel thanks for the comment nick! I think at some point in the pipe line the image got a bit darker. In the show it’s not quite as moody! I’d agree it’s a bit dark in this video!
Ayyyy here within the first minute. Love this breakdown dude
Which lenses you using?
@@dandymedia9448 for this video just an RF 24-70. On other projects Zeiss Jenas, Fujinon 19-90, or DZO piktors
Sorry, I can't hear you well as the music is overwhelming your voice.
@@ontheroad_again the challenge is what makes it fun!!
I have seen ither reveiews saying the mark 2 has rucher blacks. Have you ever noticed this ?
If I rig out my R5C, it’s not defeating the purpose - it’s still alleging $3K vs going with RED. Plus I get full frame 😎
Great video
The WOW factor stops when RED starts(jerking back & forth) and AF stops tracking at iso 1600. 100% agree with your 5 pros. People forgot(Nikon shooters), Canon already raided RED’s raw compression patents, years ago, in exchange for RF/EF AF support on RED bodies. RED, just like ARRI natively supports Canon’s RF/EF lenses, not Nikon, Not Sony. There’s a reason why, Canon have all kinds of raw flavors and bit rates for both stills and video, nobody comes close. For heavens sakes….LMAO, Sony can’t even do internal raw in there ML bodies as of 2024.
Komodo colors are what make the Komodo stand out, and it doesn’t overheat during a 1-hour talking head recording. The R1 is a better choice over the R5 II due to its big battery, lack of overheating, and killer low-light capabilities thanks to the 24MP sensor.
@@rodrigodeantonibrito I would disagree about the Komodo colors. They have never stood out to me after shooting on everything else. In my testing shooting them side by side a few times the R5 ii is incredibly close on colors. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it for the first time. Also the R5 ii does not over heat in 23.98. So the interview would be fine. I also wanted the higher MP for my studio photo work. It’s been an incredible camera. Not even close to the crap we had in the original R5.
@@robtrent4167 ok! For me its another level. The grading possibilies on the Komodo are insane. Im own a Komodo OG and the R3. Will get the R1 probably next month. Low light photos are very important for me.
@ the 16 bit raw is unmatched when it comes to grading. Can’t argue that! I just don’t find very many projects take advantage off all that.
@@robtrent4167I understand, but my point is that the R5 II’s image is closer to the R6 Mark II’s than to the Red’s.
@@rodrigodeantonibritothe r52 look is far away from the r6 2, i have both
Well, if you just wanna show up with the wow factor buy a old red for pennies on the dollar and just show up with it but actually use the canon😂
@@whiterock1865 slap a RED sticker on the canon and call it a day
@@robtrent4167 An even better solution!!! ;)
Please make more r5m2 video content. Thanks.
@@RogerZoul more in the pipe!
Would love to see some side by side footage of r5ii and Komodo. Do you think the r5ii clog 2 footage has that same secret sauce the c70 does ? Something about the c70 footage just looks more cinematic and so does the komodo haha.
@@doktorr23 I honestly think the it does have the same sauce. I might do a comparison soon! I sold mine awhile back but I can track one down to do a comparison soon
@ Please do it man! Would love to see it!
Stop doing video. You look stupid.
I’m thinking about buying the R5C soon. Any advice between the R5C and the R5 Mark II? The only reason I’m waiting is to see if the R5C Mark II comes out in 2025 😅
@@yankfr I think the R5 II will serve you better for video personally. Better battery life and you get Clog 2 in 10bit modes. Ive personally not shot on R5C much, I know people like it, but I think the R5 II is a more fully featured camera.
I had R5C, now have R5 Mark II and it is a better option. R5II has features that R5C doesn't - Clog2 (better for dr than clog3), shoots full frame 4K raw lite (R5C crops raw).
What’s your setup can you do a video
@@MassMediaArtistry what kind of setup? I’m down for video ideas always
@ just to show how you shout with your markII Do you use a cage? How do you do audio ? Basically your setup I know you said you don’t like a 7 inch monitor but was wondering how your run and gun set up is
Glad you pulled the trigger. Love mine as well.
Great video man. Question, did you have any overheating issues during your shoots with the R52?
@@vizualsbynick hey man! I haven’t had any overheating problems at all!
Love the channel brother. Just subscribed. I've been thinking about getting a Dsmc2 RED Raven so I can have more compression control and alleviate the SDI madness
apparently there is a dual base iso 800/4000 for LOG+RAW (not sure for standard profiles, generally a stop before, based on r5C/c80)
Yes forgot to mention this! Gonna pin this comment
If only you named the camera.........
R5 mk ii. Sorry big dog. Just a cut down of the long for video on my channel
Can you make the background music more louder? I can almost hear what you were saying in the video

Where is the best place to find amateur photographers? I have lots of work for one
@@quintondoody2560 I’d look on some facebook groups. I bet there is an amateur photographer facebook group for your area that you could post in saying you need someone. Also not a bad idea to go into a local camera store and ask around!
Interesting video, thanks! Have you run into any/much overheating at all? Or do you tend to do more “stop-start” shooting? Currently running two R5’s but I’ve just sold one to put an order in on a mark ii. Also have you used the cooling grip at all, and would you think it would be necessary for a more “stop-start” kind of shooting environment? Cheers
@@gavthane hey man thanks for the comment! I have not run into the overheating issue. I’ve had the bar pop up on my screen but never go more than half way! If I’m recording a frame rate that over heats (like 120) it’s much more stop start. When I sit down and film a talking head in 24fps 4k for RUclips (maybe 30min) the temperature bar doesn’t even come up. I’ve held the cooling grip and I wasn’t a big fan. I would recommend getting the R5 ii first and see if you run into any overheating. I think you are gonna be stoked on it!!
@ oh that’s great to hear! Were you in 4K standard or 4K fine? Either way, I’m incredibly stoked indeed
@@gavthane just standard 4k mainly! Haven’t done a lot of testing with fine mode yet. But I’m excited to see the benefits

Why not the C300 Mark iii?

I’d be curious about how the DJI system performs in low light conditions. Working as an AC for higher budget narratives or commercials, I often noticed on lower budget monitors, that they cut the shadows. So especially on feature film sets I experienced quite often to shot in seriously edgy light conditions on purpose, so the image I got was sometimes hard to judge weher something is in focus or not. Especially remembering the old Paralinx or bolt 500 systems. There was quite a compression going on. I noticed a big improvement since Bolt4k was released on that. Also the monitor performance for this on the Cine7 is outstanding, in my opinion. Daylight viewability I’d be also quite curious about for the DJI system. Long term reliability for sure is the next thing. How does it behave in high and low temperature environments, how in high humidity environments. But for sure that’s not something I expected you to test here ;)! For that price it’s a fair deal to just have one or two monitors and Tx as a backup. Also one thing I had in mind when I saw the test. Did you check the systems also one by one? There is much likely some interference cause from one system to the other. The distance of both transmitters was not even 50cm as both were mounted on the Komodo. Which normally is the very minimum you should have transmitters next to each other. Better further away… So I could image the performance of both systems might be better without having another transmitter sending next to it. Also for the receivers I could imagine some distance of at least one meter, the signal could benefit from. But anyways, I highly appreciate the effort you took to show the most obvious and important real world results from comparing the systems. Cheers!
