Layout Update - The Bridge Trestle is Complete But What's Next? Channel Mail Calls
Thank you for spending the time to put this together. I got a lot out of this. I am successfully running JMRI now because of this video.
Awesome to hear! I've made some changes to mine since making the series but that's also because I did slight modifications to my layout and still doing so. If you have detailed questions, feel free to email me and I'll try my best to help.
What do you think about applying a sealer or paint to all the plywood first to prevent warping? I like that you are nailing the outside of the track ties and the cork roadbed rather than gluing it down. Nailing the inside of the track ties looks horrible. Nailing the outside of the track ties is barely noticeable.
Most of the time, it's already started warping at the box store because the lumber today is crap unless you buy the expensive stuff.
@@TheTrainFreak Excellent point and very true! Maybe creating plywood splines is the only practical way to solve the warping problem?
Possible but even their quality has gone downhill and that can be more expensive than just buying the better boards.
@@TheTrainFreak What would you suggest as a better plywood that doesn't warp that Home Depot or Lowe's sells?
Once you get everything screwed in as long as you have enough bracing (16" centers), I haven't noticed a warping issue with 1/2" ply on top. I also use project plywood that has one extra ply and comes pre-sanded on one side.
What did you cut the angled line in the plywood for the wall that's not square with? You didn't show that. A circular saw with a track?
Yes, I used a chalk line to mark my line and a circular saw to cut it. The angle is based on the measurements.
@@TheTrainFreak Thanks! Do you use a guide for your circular saw?
Very helpful video. Extremely well done. Nothing skipped.
it is specificaly 3 ft narrow gauge. Cape Gauge (the narrow gauge used in Japan and parts of africa) is 3ft 6in gauge.
Yes, it is exactly 3 foot in gauge. There might of been some logging RR's that used 3'6" but I wouldn't know of any from the top of my head.
Great tribute to Roy. I think my favorite Roy video was the one where did the work on the Evenston round house.
Thanks Chazco!
Why i hate helix was my favorite q
Mine too!
I run DCC for my HO layout and MTH DCS for my O-Scale Layout, Jason. Thanks for asking!
Very cool!
Very Nice Tribute to Roy, Jason. Roy will be missed. Rest in Peace, Roy!
Thanks Russ!
Nice tribute to Roy…gotta find that water fall video…
Roy did a waterfall video?
Very nice tribute to Roy, he will be remembered by all. I really didn’t have a favorite video as Roy’s videos were all great learning experiences. His talents were numerous. Thanks for great video
Thanks Ken!
Very fitting tribute to Roy, Jason - well-done! Enjoyed all the pix - some great modelers out there! This may sound like a cop-out, but I really couldn't pick a favorite Roy video, I enjoyed them all. Always found some inspiration in Roy's videos.
Thanks John! Yeah they all were great!
It has been so long since I watched one of his videos that I don't remember any of them. None of them are with Justin Case, I couldn't stand that character. But I don't have a favorite, I don't remember them enough.
Thanks Tim!
Howdy Jason! Man... some really talented modelers out there! I really loved the waterfall. Beautiful! I am not familiar with Roy's videos but I will add them to my list to check out. Well done and thanks for sharing 🤠
Thanks Steve! Definitely worth checking out.
Great memorial! I've watched his helix video more times than I can count. Solid advice.
Thanks Aaron! Agreed!
Justin Case...Top 8 Secrets for Becoming a REAL Model Railroader is a good one made me laugh
Thanks Dwight. Very good choice!
Great episode Jason. Roy will be missed. He was a true pioneer and into us all
Thanks Dave! Don't forget to go answer the question of the episode. ;-)
wow that was a long video lol but it was a nice video its good seeing shots from people layouts
Thanks Dwight! Don't forget to go answer the question of the episode. ;-)
@@TheTrainFreakyou need to watch my short i posted today since your the one told me that you thought i could build a crop duster plane
Hi Jason 👋 What a nice memorial...well done . Roy definitely was an inspiration, he will be missed 🙏 👍 DD
Thanks Darrell! Don't forget to go answer the question of the episode. ;-)
Don't forget to post your answer to the video below. Another great part of this community is sharing! Thanks! - Jason
nice tribute to Roy
Thanks Joe! Don't forget to go answer the question of the episode. ;-)
The one (Ones) of Roy I liked best, he and I joked about is "Justin Case".
Thanks Lynn! Anytime Justin Case popped up, it was definitely worth watching. He is such a hoot!
Murphy Mill
Nice day for it! 👍
That is was John! Thanks for watching!
nice update, I have 2 of the walthers turnouts I will be putting on the second level of my layout, seems we both have been playing with some switches for some major changes on our layouts,
Thanks! Looks like we do. That's why I don't glue my track in place and use nails to make adjustments as needed. Once I'm happy with what I have, the gluing in ballast also glues the track and roadbed in place.
Oh my!! My brain just shorted 😂. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
double crossovers are so nice, they save a lot of space. nice work Jason! :)
That they do! I had space limitations here otherwise I'd rather have single crossovers.
What a nice crossover!
Thanks!
Jason one question , what is the track center for your crossover, looks and works fantastic, lots of work to build it
2" center, NMRA standard for HO
Glad you built that and not me trying 😂😂…yikes…logging facility looks really goood
I got faith in you Anthony! I bet you could do it with a little practice.
Nice update Jason
Thanks!
All this electronic stuff goes straight over my head lol
It can get confusing at first but isn't so terrible once you grasp it. Just don't let it intimidate you.
Sorry we missed it 😊
No worries!
Howdy Jason! Well done sir. The wiring sounds like a nightmare - glad you were able to figure it out! Thanks for sharing 🤠
Thanks for watching!
Great work and explaining to us Jason! Nice work! (Dave).
Thanks!
@@TheTrainFreak you're very welcome.
You are a brave soul for tackling that thing! Curious, and others are probably too, what is the cost difference between the Walthers vs this one? I am thinking not just $, but also time to install.
Materials in rail, copper ties, and wooden ties is probably around $50 at most for this build. I spent maybe a total of 10 hours (not waiting on glue to dry) on the build process. You'll have to buy a point form tool but that can be used for single turnouts as well and if you buy the jig, the price does goes up at front but the more you build, the cost spreads out over time. I was told that if you buy the jig, point form tools, rail, and ties; it would take roughly 25 to 30 turnouts to offset your cost but I've never done the math. You have to think of this as a long term investment rather than all up front cost.
