Follow me as I attempt to restore my 1971 Datsun 240z to all its former glory! I will be learning everything from scratch during the restoration and rebuild including panel welding and rust repair, body work, and paint, sewing and trimming interiors, restoring each salvageable part I can! Come learn with me!
History: I'm from the West Coast of Australia. I bought this 1971 Datsun 240z 10 years ago as a 23 year old, planning to drive it for a bit before doing a restoration. Well it did not turn out as planned and I had to garage the Z till I had a practical place to tear it down and rebuild it. The time has finally arrived!
Would love you to join me on my long and arduous journey.

Welcome to the 240ZBUILTBYME Channel! 240z Restoration Project Introduction
Hope you’re still out there working on this z
Nice work. I've had my Zed blasted and epoxy primed (a few yrs ago here in NZ) Hope to get into it soon (done all the mecanicals). Those belts sanders seem to do the trick really well, I'll defineately get one. Love watching your progress.
Where did ya go?
For the 1st panel you got did you measure the metal on new panel and cut the old off? Or just straight across i just ordered my panel to replace my rusty rear end
Hey bro i hope all is well, good to see you 're back
Nice work mate 👏👏
Where are you sending the dash for re skinning?
I sent it to my local vintage parts shop, they also reskin dashes. Where abouts are you?
I’m glad I watched this video, I probably would make the same mistake
Haha a few people have said they did the exact same thing so easy mistake to make! Good luck!
ohh dang another episode! Excited to see you back at it. That is a bunch of "bog" we say bondo here.
Bondo! That’s it lol I was trying to remember what you guys say and all I could come up with was filler lol cheers man!
Hey mate, any idea if the lower Valance panel would fit a 2+2? I had the same shocking discovery on mine but it was over rust! (Dodgy sods...)
Hi Jacob, I’m not an expert on 2+2’s but I don’t believe they are the same due to the different bumpers, but have a search around the forums and you should find the answer.
A smear of bog’s one thing but that was outta control! I really, really don’t understand how someone - a “professional” panel beater, potentially - could do such a crap job and feel good about themselves. Your work, on the other hand, looks to be great.
Thanks Alastair! Really appreciate your comments Lol I was astounded 😳 same quality of work all over the car….unfortunately
I’m enjoying the progress. Your video production is coming along nicely, too. They’re easy to follow and we’ll edited. Cheers.
*well, not we’ll.
Looks like a good solid base so far.
Lol it’s not, it’s actually very very rusty, but it’s what I’ve got now! Hopefully we will chip away and bring her back to life! Thanks for watching
You’ve got me hooked, Ryan. I’m going to subscribe. But first things first. Repeat after me: “Two-forty zeD! Two-forty zeD!” We are Aussies, after all. Looking forward to your vids!
Hahaha I get that a lot, I don’t know why I say Zee! Thanks for your support!
Well done fella....some of these old 'repairs' are horrific....good luck with the blast !
Filler / bog aint so bad..as long as its over primed metal and not rusty like yours (and mine!) make sure they epoxy prime the car right after blasting, and that they don't use too abrasive a material!
Haha too true! Yeah that’s the plan, epoxy straight after. These guys only do cars so they know what they’re doing in terms of abrasives, I can’t wait to get it done and start replacing metal! it’s been a long time coming!
I can understand your pain bro!!! Datsuns and rust is a battle that some cant understand 😂 we shall continue in the fight!!!
✊🏽
Nasty surprise, but the surviving z cars have lasted this long. Not bad considering the metal quality being used by Datsun - Nissan at the time. Fiat was also experiencing the same issues with there models in the 70s. To add to that these cars weren't worth that much a few years back so no one took the time to fix them properly. I'm afraid that's down us, the current owners. Take solace in knowing many have gone and are going through the same issues, just take a deep breath and focus on completing the job irrespective of the hurdles thrown at you. It's well worth it in the end. All the best with your project. Looking forward to more of your adventures and discoveries.
Thanks mate, I honestly feel like giving up every second or third day lol 😂 just gonna keep chipping away
Time to go over the rest of the car with a fridge magnet.
And a screwdriver…. Wait till you see what’s in the roof…
I feel your pain, got mine blasted after finding filler everywhere. Saved loads of time but it came back looking like Frankenstein's Daughter...... prepare yourself.
I’m honestly expecting the blaster to just hand me back a few drums of sand lol 😂
welcome back
Welcome Back!! :D
Thanks mate!
Glad to see ya back bro!!! We will building Zs together!!!
great to see you back at it !....great vid...well done
Thanks, that means a lot! These sort of comments keep the motivation up! Thanks for watching!
Man, so glad you are back, I'm rebuilding a' Z' and you was/are my go-to channel. Please, don't leave it so long next time! Thank You.
Man that means a lot to hear that! Haha It wasn’t an intentional absence, went through some difficult times losing my mum last year but we’re definitely back in action! Thanks for watching
I feel ya!!! Lost my Dad at 55yrs old from Alzheimer's 2yrs ago. Keep your head up bro!!!!
I will be referring to this video for sure when we get to the interior portion of our 240z build!!!
@@DustyMacsGarage sorry for your loss mate, it’s a rough ride for sure. Gone too soon…
Come on Ryan, We need an update 🙂
Hahaha I appreciate the pressure! It’s coming soon, I’ve been very lazy with my editing lately.
Great job mate! Built not bought. Will be staying tuned for this build. I think you’ve had plenty of welding practice now while building the rotisserie jig. Should be ready to do some nice welds on the Z.
Cheers mate! Yes I’m definitely confident enough to start some metal work on her. Had some personal things going on last year but getting back to work on the car very very soon hopefully!
It's been too long.....................
Haha I know right…. I have just started up again. Next episode in a few weeks hopefully. 🤞🏽
Bro you good, just went through your series but u suddenly stop it
Thanks man I appreciate it! Yes my mum was unwell all this year and she just passed recently so I have been preoccupied. But the build is slowly progressing behind the scenes in terms of buying parts and tools I will need. I plan to start up again soon, thanks for reaching out!
@@240zbuiltbyme5 Hey man, sorry to hear that.. im very interested in ur progress keep it up. I planning to get my self a Datsun to i might need sum advice
@@240zbuiltbyme5 I just stumbled upon your channel, and was wondering why you havent posted in a while. Sorry to hear about your Mom passing!!! Thoughts and prayers with ya!!!! Im Re-building a 240z for my wife on my channel and man is it alot of work. Best wishes bro!!!!
@@DustyMacsGarage thanks mate! I’ve been working in the back ground, just being slack with editing. It’s a lots of work as you know! I have a bunch of your videos on my watchlist but just haven’t got round to watching!
@@Ryan-wf7sh I completely understand bro!!! Filming and planning and editing take up sooo much time!!! Glad to hear your still working on your Z. Also stoked you have some of my videos on your watchlist!!! Stay in touch bro!!!
2:42 "Mooiiiisssssssst" :P
all my bolts got mixed up for the rear end. a bunch of 7's and 9's at different lengths and some have built in lock washers and washers.. need to know where they go. i saw that you labeled yours. my son did not. pretty much need to know the bolts, lock washers, and washers for... arrestor brackets to body; front diff x-member to body; transverse link braces to body and link; rear sway bar to body; and rear lca brackets to transverse link. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi mate if you google “list of fasteners 240z” you will see a classiczcars.com link as the second result. Go into that thread and someone posted pdf called “S30 hardware pictures” which has a compilation of pictures and labels for all the fasteners. This should help you organize what you have. Hope this helps
@@240zbuiltbyme5 hell. yea! ty soo much!
That spatter you're getting might be a setting. I think you might be too hot. Just a thought. Beautiful work though!
I did think it might be a setting, I tried playing with the wire speed to get rid of it, my welder only has 3 settings for voltage and it’s set on the correct one for the thickness steel I’m using... 🤷🏻♂️
You mad man. How are you doing those smooth panning/sliding shots?
Just on the tripod! I realized I need more B roll, and looking to transition to doing my narration post vid instead of during. More interesting that way and my sound won’t suck so bad!
This is going to be a great restoration
Aww shux bro! 🥰
LOL
Great job man !...enjoying watching your progress from the UK !....keep at it...cheers
Thanks Graham! It’s a slow process.... only get to work on it once a fortnight but we’ll get there! Cheers for watching 👍🏽
Wish you luck
Everything can be fixed with enough money.
get ready to replace everything and upgrade everything,,,better have deep pockets
That’s generally how a restoration goes... pockets are plenty deep, don’t worry your little head about that
Looks like you’re having a great time with the Zed. I just caught the Engine removal and noticed the Break Master Cyl on the bloody wrong side, which means you’ve gotten yourself a Fairlady, good for you! You’re probably gonna hate to hear this but did you attach a string or wire to the rear wire harness so that you can fish it back up and over the wheel arch? Making mistakes is the best way for all of us to learn. Lord knows I’ve taught myself quite well due to the level of effort I seem to have for placing myself in situations. Mistakes are not a problem for those people who understand that they have been given a challenge especially when you’re faced with the consequences of mistake or over sight to solve or create a solution. Engine removal video case in point! Have Fun, Work Hard, but more importantly Be Safe! Cheers Kevin
Thanks for watching Kev! Yes I’ve made several mistakes so far but nothing that can’t be recovered from. I agree nothing teaches you quicker than screwing up! No I didn’t do the wire trick for the rear harness, however I have to cut the rear arches out and could install one while I’m doing that, good tip, I’ll put it on my list. Thanks again Ryan
Hey Ryan how can I contact u I’m in Perth too. Thanks mate
Hi Leo go on my Instagram and send me a pm, 240zbuiltbyme
Hey bud are you in Australia? Just wanted to know where you got the roof panel from? Thanks
Yeah I am mate, got it from a local z guy in perth. He doesn’t have any others unfortunately, they’re pretty rare nowadays which is why I grabbed it as soon as I knew he had one.
OMG!! A bee's dick! LOL!!!
Hahaha 🤪 🐝
Nice job on the jig. I found when taking on projects you haven't tackled before you can run the risk of job overload in your head. Just pick them off one at a time and you'll get there. Best wishes with the rest of the project.
Thanks mate! Yes I hear you on that one, I run a excel sheet jobs list and organize my brain on there. Cheers for watching
Great work. You're doing a very detailed job of the restoration. I'm glad I found your channel.
Thanks mate! I’m getting quite impatient, want to get stuck into the rust repairs already! Thanks for watching
Loving the build, keep up the good work!
Thanks mate! Appreciate you watching! Can’t wait to actually fix something... Soon hopefully!
Glad to see you got a better roof :-)
Yes it needs some work but much better shape that mine!
@@240zbuiltbyme5 not totally convinced that the replacement roof is better! The fold above the rain gutter looks a little softer than it should be and it might be full of bog too! Might just be the shine on the paint on the camera but excited to find out! Please get a bottle of gas and ditch the flux core wire. Thank me later.....
@@benheynen2705 hey Ben cheers for watching, my spare roof is most definitely in better condition! I can see all the spot welds in the rain gutter so no bog. Haha don’t worry the gas less wire came free with the welder and will only be used to build the chassis jig and rotisserie. Once moving onto body panels gas is given.
10 years... that’s commitment to a dream.
Sure is... it’s not really commitment though if it’s just sitting in a shed rotting away lol now is when the commitment really starts! Thanks for watching
What did you use to take the seats out I'm a beginner and I been having a very hard time🤦♂️
Hi Juan! I just used an open ended spanned to undo the bolts. Yes it’s an awkward job! Just have to get the bolts loose then I undid the rest by hand. Thanks for watching! Ryan
Great job on that chassis jig. Very clever and looks good so far. Excited to follow along with your restoration process!
@ZCarGuide thanks mate! Do chime in with any advice you have along the way! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
