The cultural meaning of filial piety in imperial China 孝
Просмотров 163Месяц назад
Filial piety is one of the most important Confucian moral values. This moral principle also plays a significant role in the laws encoding Confucian moral values. Some Chinese scholars argue that it was first encoded in I Ching as a sacred law endorsed by the Heaven. This video clip traces its origin from the I Ching hexagram.

That's interesting! Both water and monkey belong to Yin phase and would enjoy success for any business related to women. I wonder which profession you are in. Hope you enjoy a prosperous year!!

Wow, thank you. It is wonderful that you notice this detail.

Thank you!!
Thank you Dr Gao. Subscribed now. 🙏
I'm a long time Taoist 53 year old gweilo(?) with a long time interest in Chinese philosophy/religions. I am wanting to learn Mandarin Chinese, but poor as I am, living away from the cities, the internet is my only teacher, but as you may know, Chinese isn't the easiest of languages to learn alone. That said, I am very grateful for your insights into Chinese folktales, philosophy etc, so once again, thank you Dr Gao... 🙏
@ Thank you. I am very happy that my videos are useful to you. If you are native English speaker, there are a lot of Chinese native speakers who would love to exchange lessons with you. You can get on the Rednotes, now is so popular, and find someone who would exchange English lesson with Chinese lesson. I find teaching and learning are the two sides of the same learning process benefits both the teacher and the disciple!! I hope you find someone soon!
Very interested to see the beautiful art of Chinese calligraphy addressed here. I have the impression that most of the most esteemed Chinese poets are not particularly remembered for their calligraphy, while most of the most admired Chinese calligraphers are not particularly prized for any efforts at poetry. Are there examples of historical figures who are honored for both poetry and calligraphy?
Most of the scholar officials from imperial China were quite good calligraphers because their exam papers were the first thing to be judged. Those with bad writing would be thrown out right away. But there are a few poets who were also known for their calligraphy work such as the Song Dynasty poet Su Shi. There are a lot of his calligraphic works online. Just search 苏轼书法作品, you'll find them. It is just that his poetry outshine his calligraphic works.
@@dr.gaosclassroom Thank you for the informative reply!
I think you are confusing 草書 with 狂草。 草書 is actually highly regulated. 狂草 is free style.
Thanks for the extra knowledge.

wow, so beautiful to see how Chinese writings developed trough times and spece!
Yes, every Chinese character has a story behind it. I had a lot of fun digging them out!!
"...for an abusive husband" BIG BEAMING SMILE. I loved the big smile. Quite funny.
I knew you would appreciate my giggling over the story. The Tang Dynasty was the most friendly time towards women. However, women's position in Chinese society were getting worse and worse since the Mongol invasion. The last dynasty was the worst when women pretty much became domestic slaves to their families. Fortunately Chinese women's position in the family and society at large has improved substantially since the fall of the Qing Dynasty and are getting better and better.
@ Yes! The bout of delighted laughter was satisfying

love the motive "silver river" somehow more, as it is more close, and it can reflect upon "the milky way"!!!
Great point!
Simple, elegant, expressive and full of meaning. Perfect start to 2025!! Maybe that could be the theme for 2025.
Great suggestion!!
I've never seen the word thurible before. I knew cataract but only as a medical term, not a waterfall.
Interesting points!
David suggested these two translation to give the poem a grand and mysterious air. What do you think? Did we achieve this goal?
Cataract is used for waterfalls on the Upper Nile, I think, but like you said, I had never heard of “thurible”. I had Google it.
Prefer Silver River. Milky Way sounds too Western.
Nine Ding also symbolizes the Emperor, as I am sure you know.
謝謝,老師!Thanks for this introduction to a very important topic

Do you think these stories go back to the chinese neolithic?
I am not sure. The poem I presented in the related video was the first explicit gay love poem. Some Chinese scholars claim that a few poems from the Book of Songs are for gay love. Those poems are the earliest poems in Chinese culture that goes back to about 10th century BCE.
@dr.gaosclassroom its incredible we have documents that survive from that long ago.

For some reason any comment I submit to your video on filial piety does not get accepted. Not sure what is the problem. I tried to post it on the filial piety video on the community page and that too did not work!! It would be understandable if it was the video on ghosts.....

What is the poem that states i go where there are nonold friends
Do you know who is the poet? Maybe sending me the whole poem can help me to figure out?
Thank you for your introduction to the concept of 同. Ihave read parts of the 仪礼and 周礼in order to understand the use of bronze ritual vessels, but never the 礼记. I am not sure I have the patience to start on such a long book! So much other Chinese literature to read and so many Chinese characters to learn. I really enjoy your explanations of Chinese poetry. Maybe one day you can discuss one of the Chuci.
Thank you for your kind words. 礼记 is a manual for the rulers and the officials about how to run an empire. It can be a bit tiresome for us common folks. But it would worth your while to read some part of it such as the chapters of 礼运,学记,大学,中庸,etc. They present the basic moral framework for imperial China. Yes, I am planning to present one or two of 屈原's poems. His poems are often way too long and complicated to translate and explain. That is why I haven't translated any of this poems. Now he is on my to do list!
I came to this video, and consequently this inspiring early poem by the great Li Bai, after watching your episode on Du Fu's late poem that references this work. The contrast between the young Li Bai's optimism and the elderly Du Fu's resignation is profound and moving. The poems function like bookends to a shared human life, two hearts meeting across time.
I am glad you enjoyed these two poems. It is fascinating to see how these two poets viewed life from different perspectives.
This late poem by Du Fu is heart-piercingly beautiful, and is my favorite among the poems of his I have encountered. Your persuasive argument that Du Fu references an earlier work by his beloved friend just enhances its power. Incidentally, there is a 1974 song called "Seagull", by the English musical group Bad Company, that reminds me of Du Fu's great poem, though I doubt there is any direct connection there.
Thank you! I am so happy you share my feeling about this poem. I'll definitely check out the song.
By the way, could
By the way, could you explain the last two lines?
Sorry, I meant the last two lines, especially 含 and 泪. Many thanks.
You can check out the full featured video where I explained all the characters one by one. I posted the link at the end of this video. 含 normally means to hold something in the mouth as well as containing something in a container or included in something; 泊 literarily means to moor a boat. Both characters are verb. and pronounced in the second tone.
@ Many thanks for your response. I will check out the link.
Many thanks for introducing this poem.
My pleasure 😊
Awesome analysis of classical Chinese poetry and culture. These phrases came to my mind, but they don't fit the poetic structure you explained so well. Stars suspended o'er the vast plain, the moon shimmers on the great Yangtze's flow. I feel privileged to hear your presentations on this poetry. Both poems have universal meaning yet Du Fu's interpretation of an old disappointed scholar official is especially appealing. As far as a similar practice in 美國 i don't know, but I might fear unjust accusations of plagiarism. Perhaps that's unreasonable.
It is so wonderful to have someone like you to share my passion for Classical Chinese poetry and admire the beauty of classical poetry as well as the human connections in this poetic tradition that is quite uniquely expressed. It is quite interesting you point out the concerns about plagiarism when it comes to citing or copying poems from other poets. There has never been concerns about originality and authorship since ancient China in Chinese literary tradition. Even today concerns about plagiarism is still not a topic worry in Chinese literature which cause quite a bit controversy when interacting with the West. I guess this one of the most significant cultural difference from the Western cultures.
