    I think you've found maybe one of the key things that will determine who stays past this season and who goes. For KAT and Ant to be basically on their own islands throughout a season just doesn't make any sense. And, for better or worse, the burden is on KAT (once again) to prove he can adapt to a new reality and facilitate (and benefit from) a synergy that just hasn't been there before. If he can't, I doubt he stays with the Wolves after this season.

    Not a wolves fan. I’d like to ask a question for actual wolves fans reading this. Do you guys want to keep BOTH Kat and Gobert? I doubt the team can compete/acquire enough talent while having to pay both such big contracts. I would trade one of kat or gobert and insert Naz into that starting lineup. Also trading one big contract like Rudy’s means you could turn him into two contracts = more depth. If they continue down their current path, relying on a rookie guard to carry a lot of responsibilities, and overpaying for too many bigs just seems like it puts a ceiling on what the team can accomplish. Wolves imo will still be a clear top 4 in the west but until things change I struggle to see them making a finals appearance.

    NO. Not with Rudy getting meaningful minutes. If you swap Rudy's minutes for Naz Reid they might reach the conference finals but this team as is, does not have enough WEAPONS. If KAT can take a huge step forward into the 26-10-5 range their chances increase. I'm not counting on Dillingham to have a massive impact this season, so it's basically the same unit unless Dillingham shatters all expectations and becomes a force by playoffs. It's possible because he's elite but I'm not banking on it. But Gobert is the heel of the team in the playoffs. No way around this.

For comparison, Rudy and KAT pairing got a 9.09 Net Rating in 313 minutes and Rudy and Naz got 8.81 in 151. The team plays better with Gobert on the floor. Period.

    KAT needs to be more involved in flow action tbh, he's too good of a shooter to just be parked in the low block in a lot of these actions. He's gotta be the one running around screens putting shots up imo. I think the team is fine letting their best volume 3pt shooter putting up something close to 10 threes a game. The other guys just need to be better at boxing out and digging out long rebounds. It seemed like the opposing teams were getting all the long rebounds last season and that led to easy fast break points for them. Also, the team needs to run more. Ant tends to slow down and kill all the momentum on rebounds when he can easily run into at least 2 people and draw a foul. I guess with Rob and TSJ this can be a thing now.

      @TheGreatness-gg1jx 7 дней назад

      He also needs more HELP on offense. It ain't just a conditioning issue. He can't go hard both ways in today's league without serious help on offense. No team is asking their superstar to go that hard both ways without significant help on one end or the other. Look at Luka and Jokic for example. They play basically NO DEFENSE and rely on the rest of the team to cover them so they can work on offense. Ant is the best defender and the best weapon on offense. Either KAT has to take a massive step forward or Dillingham will need to be ROTY for anything to change in the playoffs. Just look at the rest of the West and those upgrades, especially OKC and New Orleans. GOBERT MUST GO for this team to take the next step. He's a liability on offense and way overpriced for his value.

      @@Oreosaysgo Lol you can't really compare FIBA and NBA defense or offense. The Wolves are a way better scoring team than France, but also in FIBA system, shooting rates descreases, making lesser shot even more unplayable. In the same time, zone defense doesn't have same specialization, plus refing is different and doesn't allow moving screens (not that necessarily is detrimental to Gobert, but it's a different team defense system). NCAA players are thought to be athletic and score to go further to the NBA, whether it's driving at the rim or at the perimeter, whereas euro players are taught a more tough defense and differently spaced offense, and France especially is teaching kids to go all-on defense (and not 1/1 defense). It's not remotely comparable. You may not need Rudy on the Wolves (I'd argue he'd better playing for the Mavs), but he is not redundant like in France's team with Lessort, Wemby and Yabusele. Just watch the prep and group stage where he was playing, and you'll see why he wasn't needed. It's not about his defending prowess.

    I was disappointed by Ant's performances in this series. A) Mavs didn't have anyone on the wing who was supposed to lock him up and yet, Ant failed to score at least 30 points in all 5 games. B) He was way too passive way too often. Him averaging 8 APG was not what the Wolves needed. That's like asking Kobe to pass the ball instead of scoring. C) Ant's crucial TO at the end of game 2 led to Luka's gamewinner over Rudy. All we had to do was take care of the ball and that was on Ant. D) Game 5, first quarter - I think Rudy had the most shots on the team (7), Ant was nowhere to be found and came alive too late. It was already over, Mavs were leading by 30 and not really defending anymore, when Ant suddenly hit 3 threes which helped him to boost his overall averages in the series, but without this little sequence, his overall numbers would look worse. I know he is young, but hopefully he learns from these mistakes...

  • @MichaelMayerVocalWisdom
    @MichaelMayerVocalWisdom 18 дней назад

    For me the big issue was the terrible plan on the ball when the pick came. The defensive scheme was flawed. They insisted on always going over screens regardless if the ball was in a three point threat position or player. I understand going over with a Curry or someone who will bury a three from behind the screen. But there really aren't that many shooters that require going over the screen every time. But for some reason the Wolves did it, except for Conley. He was the only one who was smart enough to do it right - quickly get under the screen and cut off the drive to the basket. The problem is when going over the screen the defender is completely out of the play. Now the ball has a clear path to the basket and someone has to pick it up. When that happens there is always an open man next to the basket for an easy finish. So the whole defense is broken just from the initial decision to go over the screen. Yes, occasionally there might be a three given up or some other break. But not nearly at the same rate they give up easy baskets by always going over the screen.

      Difference was celtics had Tatum on Lively. They were a very switch heavy team so nobody ends up in drop coverage. Second thing Mavs struggled to shoot from top of the key. So even if the Mavs managed to get the switch they wanted they would cheat heavily from the top of the key player(DJJ, PJ, Maxi). Which made it very hard for Kyrie and Luka to get theirs.

    Honestly don't understand how ppl can blame Rudy for every defensive collapse. Ant is terrible at navigating screens which leaved Rudy with a 2v1 every single possession. Jaden was also not effective at the point of attack against Luka because he was always behind the play playing Luka from behind and was a literal non-factor. Rudy has to cover his teammates' asses on every single defensive blunder and yet he's always the one getting the blame. Instead, it should be Ant and Jaden being criticized for their nonchalant defense at times which puts the team in a bad situation in the first place. The defensive rotation when the team was forcing the ball out of the Luka's hands was also terrible which could be seen in around the 5 minute mark. Long story short, defense is a total team effort and Dallas was able to preserve tons of energy on that end while doing whatever they wanted on the offensive end. It's honestly a miracle how so many games were close and winnable. With that being said, the team can only get better.

      @@vantianhergheligiu12 he didn’t win 4 dpoy because he’s elite at locking down ball handlers on the perimeter. He got them because his presence on the inside disrupts his opponents’ shot diets so much that his on/off is a superstar level impact. I’m not saying he’s immune from criticism. He’s amazing at the things he’s good at and very bad at things he’s not. I used this metaphor earlier but I think it perfectly captures my argument. Nobody would say Aaron Donald is the worse player in the history of the nfl or a fraud dpoy because he can’t lock Justin Jefferson up 1:1 on an island. People who watch the NFL are smart enough to realize that that isn’t Donald’s job. Same logic applies to Rudy. It’s just weird how it seemed almost like there was a coordinated attack on Rudy for a week where all these personalities decided they would tell the world he sucked. He absolutely doesn’t suck. He’s the second best player on a championship contender. He’s better than 99% of NBA players who have ever stepped on a court.

    Dallas' playmakers simply outplayed our defense in its entire scheme. That's a failure from the top to the bottom, and while Rudy is a part of that, he wasn't the main problem. But he is the load-bearing part of that structure, and he is the DPOY. So if they don't get it figured out this year, I do see a reconfiguration afterward that includes moving on from him and Elston Turner as the mastermind.

      I do think they'll have to change their philosophies somewhat if they don't summit the mountain this season as well. More so on offense where I think they need a pretty big overhaul of their structures. Turner just led a ridiculous defense so I think he's probably bought some wiggle room to try and tweak it to suit the playoffs better. The players themselves have to be better (and in better shape for a long run!) though.

    Plus, Gobert's on-ball defense is kinda trash. He's done nothing to improve it over the years. His base is too tall and his lateral movement, in base, is atrocious. He gives up on lateral movement and starts chasing after a couple of moves. Luka didn't even do much on this play. Gobert is WILDLY overpaid.

      Asking Gobert to go 1:1 against Doncic is like asking Aaron Donald to guard Justin Jefferson on an island.

      @suikinng4232 18 дней назад

      First, lateral movement can hardly be improved when you're a 7 foot player Second, his on ball defense isn't bad at all compare to people with his height, as he aggressively cover with arm movement, length and positioning. You cannot ask for a center at his height to cover guards as well as him while providing excellent paint protection.

    Rudy IS a liability in the playoffs. ALL one dimensional players are liabilities in the Curry Era. He's been in the league how long and can't do anything but dunk and block shots??? Really? This is nothing personal against Gobert. It's simply the reality of CURRY ERA NBA. He entered the league before the league leveled up to the Golden State level, so his weaknesses weren't as significant. Now, however, we can see why Utah was never able to advance with him, despite his shot-blocking ability. In the Curry Era, whatever your weakest link is will be targeted and exploited, on offense or defense. Ask Luka how it feels to be targeted. Minnesota will NEVER get to the conference finals with Gobert on the team. It's that simple. The team is Defense heavy and Offense Light. A one dimensional rim protector means every time he's on the court Minnesota is playing 4 ON 5 when they have the ball. Take away the lob and he is neutralized. This is basketball tactical analysis, not "Rudy slander". NAZ REID should start and take Gobert's bloated contract. NAZ REID was the reason they beat Denver. Not Gobert. Because Reid is a threat on offense and can actually play better defense on Jokic. This is simple math and I'm sure Connelly sees exactly what I'm writing about. That's why he drafted the way he drafted but dealing with Gobert's contract is a different issue. It also would require an extremely ruthless mindset. But with the West's various upgrades I don't see Minnesota getting as far next season as they did last season, so Connelly will have an easier time dealing Gobert and adding more offense.

      He cannot shoot, he is a liability on the offensive end, the game has changed dramatically and on top of that, he is not Shaq and it's hard to understand why he's not more dominant in the paint on the offensive end, it's a two-way game yes, he has elite rim protection ability, but it's so much more than that... Everyone including Anthony Edwards and Karl Anthony towns has received criticism, I think Rudy deserves the criticism because frankly, he's one of the max players and, he hit one beautiful hook shot but otherwise, has shown absolutely no ability to be out on the perimeter offensively and that's a liability for us

      @@RJLKMRDHow do you evaluate defensive capabilities ? Because there's now way Dray is a better defender this year than Gobert. Dray was a great defender, now he's better than average, but not dpoy level. A lot of people evaluate the player as a whole and not as a defender (which is literaly the point of DPOY). Dray strength is his passing ability and his 1v1 defense. Gobert strength is rim protecting and paint detterence. Just having Gobert in your team is making it top 5 in defense every year. Basketball isn't 1v1 and Gobert's value is not in 1v1 match-ups, even if he's more skilled than everybody says.
