The Ultimate Rain Barrel Irrigation System

ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS/IMPROVEMENTS: Since posting this video, many recurring questions have arisen in three areas: 1) POWER OUTAGE In the event of a power outage, the auto-refilling solenoid would be in the "open" position. This potentially wastes some water as the barrels would fill and overflow into the downspout system until the power is restored or the backfilling line is shut down. In the...

I got mines and it's a GREAT product and i love it and enjoy it because it's my favorite Leslie model the 122.
thanks great video! I've been looking for this stove for a while!
awesome, thank you! great vid. i have that model and haven't fired it up yet. thx
Great system and ideas - very helpful for my own coming system. There is one contingency I thought of which to my understanding is not covered: In case of grid failure (or just a fuse burnout on that part of the circuit) the celenoid valve will be on (as there is no power and it is a "normal open" type) and so tap water will flow into the barrels irrespective of their water level. This will further flow out of the system through the overflow mechanism thus just wasting all that water. This can potentially be costly if the power is out for a longer period. Have you thought of this scenario and how to solve for it?
Just realised you have answered at least part of this in previous comments
Yes, you can put a second solenoid upstream, of the hose water coming from the house, connected to main power. It would switch off when the main power goes out. Also look into motorized quarter turn valves. Some of these will return to closed position on a power outage, and you could accomplish the same thing with one valve.

Dude, excellent video & great info. Do you know why my drone, goes up & comes right back down? Like it goes up for about a sec or two, then crashes i cant even fly, thats how soon it crashes
Sounds like an initial calibration or GPS problem.

Interesting video. Where is the pressure regulator installed for the drip system?
Thanks. It’s in-line right after the irrigation timer in the garden. These come with the micro-drip irrigation systems.
I love your system, it’s so cool!!
Thanks.
Thx !
Brilliant idea! Is there product for sale following this design?
Thank you for the detailed video!
Cool. Can you put an organ through it? For quiet practice.
I haven’t tried it. Seems like it would work. It’s a small speaker so doesn’t have a wide sonic range (for the lower bass notes, for example).
how do you replace the water line dispenser on a 42 inch Jennair built in
Fantastic video brother! Very clear a precise. Well done and simple too .
Does adding an extra tube hurt the engine in any way?
No. It is sold by the company as an optional attachment.
@dontscrewitup ok thank you. I bought the middle tube on Amazon it was $11 I just had to put a strip of velcro around it on the inside to make it tighter. Also I didn't know they make 2 Bzt 150 models. The one with the blue choke which just has the standard 2 stroke engine and the one with the red choke that you have which has the X torque engine. That engine is far better then the standard one and has more blowing power. Check into it.
Thanks for such a great informative instruction on how to use and handle this product. We live in Australia. Everbrite should have you on commission. Thanks so much. Also, great sense of humour and easy to listen to.
Thanks!
Orange gloves are tougher and thicker than those black gloves.
Thanks. I’ll try those.
Question what happens when that coating dies from UV. How do you get it off? So you can make your siding or doors look good again?
It’s been 5 years now and just starting to fade. I assume I can put another coat of this material on. Probably will do it next month.
One clean dirt off. Two apply something that loosens oxidation, then use a soft brush and use a pressure washer, and do a good rinse., romse and romse again. when dry, you will be amazed at the color and shine. Now, apply something to protect the surface from UV. Nev uses abrasive cleaners or sponges to remove oxidization
What do you recommend for a surface protector?
Thanks for saving me hundreds of dollars. I live in the country and just getting service for broken appliances is hard to get, not to mention the added expense of travel time. Your detailed instructions make this procedure a breeze and saved me probably an hour of “discovery time”.
Thanks ! I’m happy it worked for you.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Yeah this is fantastic, well presented! Thank you captain, going to get my system going here soon
Thanks!
Nice job with this fellow clevelander. Im a year4 gardener and finally getting some great yields. I have contemplated wifi timer modules and stuff but this is just way better. Have you made any adjustments or improvements to your original design?
Thanks. No changes. It’s still running exactly the same way. I have looked at WiFi timers so I could easily skip water on days it rains. Now I need to manually turn off the timer and then turn it on the next day, which is not a super reliable or convenient method for me.
Great thnks for ur knowledge
Thanks!
The longest tutorial I've ever seen lol
👍
Good job. For all you instruction writers out there, this is how you do it.
Thanks!
I learned more in this video than reading that instruction guide for the last three months... Thank you so much, you have saved what hair I have left from me tearing it out of my head...kudos to you, well done explaining the ins and outs. I'm elated and elevated😀! 🛰
Thank you. 🙏
Exceptional video. Thank you. Our halogen puck lights are hard wired throughout the kitchen, into mouldings, ceiling, cabinets, etc. Is there any way to use the old AC wite to attach this to DC LEDs without us removing all the buried AC wires throughout the kitchen?
Thank you. Good question. Obviously make sure it is totally disconnected from the AC source, but it should work. DC is also a 2-wire system. I’d consult with an electrician. They may have a very simple way to do it.
@@dontscrewitup Wow - fast reply. I will certainly consult with an electrician on this. I assume that although it is also a 2 wire system and the gauge is different, hopefully this won't affect any electrical resistance as it would be a lower power going to the LED pucks. ON another note - love seeing the percussion instruments in your cabinet. There's nothing like a good old cabasa to keep the rythmn moving.
Thanks! I don’t think the thicker gauge wire matters. I think it’s a problem going the other way with too much voltage going through too small gauge, but that’s not my area of expertise. I have, and play all kinds of instruments.
Man, Nice job! Love what you are doing here!
Thanks!
Do you have a solar setup video for water pump? Im wanting to do this off grid
I do not. I looked into at in the past. You would probably want a DC pump running off of a marine battery.
Excellent video and the unit on this Jenn-Air is exactly the same as on my KitchenAid KBSD602ESS. Thanks!
Thanks!
Using existing tools to extend the worklife of other existing tools! Almost a lost art/science. Most excellent!!
Thanks!
Very useful. I’ve had mine 3 years and just now getting it out. I’ll watch this video several times. Thanks
Good luck!
Good design, but I have a question: When the barrows get empty, the float switch triggers the solenoid which turns on the tap water to fill the barrows. What if it starts raining while the tap is on? This means both the tap and rain are filling up the barrows at the same time, doesn't it? Depending on how fast the tap is running, only a fraction of the barrows will be filled with rain water in this test case, won't it?
Yes, that is correct. It will fill with both rain water and hose water at the same time. However, the rainwater is massively more volume than the hose water, so it will fill largely with rain water as soon as it starts raining.
Thank you for this video. Your content is excellent. I was thinking, "geez I know that voice... of course! He's my go-to sourdough guru. You wear many hats my friend, and you wear them well! ❣️
Thank you. I actually started making these videos during the pandemic when I was also making many of my sourdough videos. But a little different persona. 😆
Hello. Have you had issues with the float switch in barrel B shutting off the pump due to low water level, even when barrel A still has water? Ideally you’d want both barrels to be at the same level all the time. But depending on how much rain you get during the filling process, this isn’t always the case. I’m doing the same thing and I foresee this being a problem. Any advice?
Good question. The Y-connection hoses at the bottom drains both barrels at the same time, so the water levels equalize as the pump is running. The way I have this set up, when filling, the first barrel fills completely then spills over and fills the second one. If you assume they both fill to the top, then the level drops equally until both are almost empty, then the float switch trips and starts the filling process.
This is a neat little drone and quirky. Kindve a "retro" drone at this point but I like that. Somethung nobody is mentioning is this drone within the same model number uses 2 different batteries. I just brought one off Amazon (new but open box) and then went ahead and ordered extra batteries for it. Well the replacement batteries were too thick. Thats because they are 2S. It was the spec thats in the manual 7.4v 1200mah. What came with the drone? 3- 1S 3.7v 1000mah batteries came with the drone. It looks like the opening in the side of the drone originally allowed 2S batteries to be used and the design was modified with an insert or modified battery tray to be smaller for the 1S batteries. Anyhow, I bought this (mainly over the HS110G) partly because it was listed as a 2S drone whereas the HS110 runs 1S. Im pretty sure the HS110 is basically the same 1S batteries I recieved with this drone. I would like to return it to 2S 7.4v especially now that I got batteries ready to go in that size. But surprisely nobody has come across this issue. Batteries are same length, width, and pin location. So if that battery trey was swapped out or modified it may work provided the electronics are the same rating as before to handle 7.4v
Thanks. I’ve not noticed the battery size difference, but I will look out for it.
Thanks for the vidéo. Very good cleaning and presentation. Now mine is full clean 🤙🏻
Thanks.
Brilliant
Thank you.
I'm incorporating you brilliant system now. I do have a question though. Did you wire your selonoid into your pump cord?
Yes. Both wired to same 3 wire grounded plug. I also use waterproof connectors there.
Thanks for the quick response.
Hey bud! Awesome review. Strongly considering purchasing. How is it holding up after all these years now?
Still like new. Buy a can of touch up paint (maybe it comes with a small can), in case you get scratches on it. I’ve only used the paint once. Glass still looks like new when cleaned. Inside of firebox gets ash colored. Otherwise operating like new. Easy to clean, and very clean burning. Chimney is still like new. No creosote build up at all. We burn dry, seasoned hardwood. I out a small circulating fan behind it (4 inch pancake fan) on a variable speed controlled outlet. It really circulates the warm air on coldest days.
@@dontscrewitup Awesome to hear! Just found out its only rated to 100 square meters for heating 😅 quite a let down for the price i think!
Yes. It is a very warm in close proximity, but does not throw off heat. However; with a small circulating fan, it heats our main living space, which is about 200 sq meters. But it has a pretty small firebox and is more of an “accent” or supplemental heat source than a primary heat source; in my opinion.
Spray it with a cheap harbor freight touch up gun
Won’t it gum up the tip? Have you done it with this specific product? It sets up very quickly.
Great stuff! Lots of usable and tested ideas. I use a lot of the same connectors and hose types for our property. Many thanks.
Thanks.
What psi is the pump? Your pimp l8nknisndead and I'm wondering the model or general specs to work well. Also as a second backup you can setup a watering trough water fill used by farmers for decades. Its a float attached to the house water to fill.
50 psi. Shurflo pump from Northern Tool. 198 GPH.
Hi Tom, thanks for your comprehensive review of the Stuv 30 C. It was very informative. I've just had one installed in our new house build in Australia and can't wait to see it in action... and now feel much better prepared to operate it, as recommended. Quick question, if you don't mind? I've been away traveling during the instal (still not home) and haven't had a chance to look in the box for what comes with the fireplace. Does the firescreen that you showed come as a standard inclusion or did you have to purchase it separately? If the latter, do you mind letting me know where, please? I can't find any reference to the fire screen anywhere online. Thanks, Tom.
Thanks! Your Stuv dealer should have a catalog of all the accessories. I believe the fire screen was sold separately.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Nice! You should do a 3 years later update. Issues, tweeks, advice..
Thanks! Setup is still running exactly the same. Many people ask about power failure and I’ve added an answer in the description of the video.
Hey Tom: Thank you for your 10-year's worth of effort to create this rain barrel irrigation system. I will be recreating your setup for my house. One quick question: since the solenoid will be constantly powered to stay closed, are you concerned about it getting too hot? Thanks again for all your hard work!
It does get warm. That’s why i keep the pump outside and in that three-sided housing. I would not put the solenoid indoors or in a closed housing.
where can i get those quick connects? amazing presentation thank you
Thanks. I got mine at Lowe’s and Home Depot.
