Asimov. Herbert. Bradbury. Clarke. Dick. Titans of Science Fiction have risen from the faded, low-quality quagmire of the pulp era. Yet for every one Vonnegut Jr, there are hundreds of hobbyist writers who had access to a typewriter, an idea about giant bugs, and an unapologetic urge to self-insert. But perhaps there are hidden gems - treasures buried in the pile of blatant sensationalism found at every thrift shop and grandfather's attic?
Join Jake as he delves into the world of mid-century trashy science fiction, buxom space babes, fishbowl helmets and alien creatures a 5-year-old could've drawn, to see if he can find something truly remarkable. Or at least mildly entertaining.

😆😆😂🤣🤣 The intro alone is worth an emphatic sub. This book sounds bonkers. 😆
Haha bonkers it was. Cheers!
Just discovered you. You are very good and entertaining. Review some Doc Savage.
Welcome Steve! I happen to have a couple of the good doctor's books, any you would recommend?
@PulpMortem "The Man Of Bronze" of course. "The Brand Of The Werewolf", "TheMonsters", "Fortress Of Solitude", there's 181 plus novels to choose from. Hopefully you're a fan of hero pulp fiction of the 30s and 40s. Doc is more adventure with elements of science fiction.
@stevegreenfield758 nice, I'll have to check but I think I have A Man of Bronze. And yes, my local bookstore is bursting with Doc. Thanks!
This sounds like a blast. A head seeking laser blast. 😆 Great review.
If you enjoyed Dimension, you can't miss Mindswap: even better,a totally wild one!
@@giuseppepicciariello9412 I have that one, I'll put it on my list. Cheers!
Great book! It reminded me of Poul Anderson’s Time Patrol and Isaac Asimov’s The End of Eternity, especially toward the end. I also thought the ending really elevated Dinosaur Beach from good to great. I loved the ambiguity of what exactly becomes of Ravel in that very last moment. Does he get a happily ever after, or does he share the fate of (spoiler)? It could be either, or maybe both in a sense.
Great review, Jake. Funny intro and the review itself was so well thought out that I’ll know to save myself the trouble with this book.
Build a wall. Keep those peppers out. Not the orange ones though - they are the same skin colour as a certain racist president
That intro, pure cinema. You're the next Herk Harvey.
@@TOLW_LeviWallace out of everything on my bingo card for today, I never expected to check off Herk Harvey. BINGO!!

haha too on the nose?
@PulpMortem yeah. That's it.
Different scenes at the same time?!?....shoot me now. Great entertaining review as always Jake!
@@GrammaticusBooks oh it was brutal. There's a good 16% that I still have no idea which scene I was in. If I had to guess Snyder's career, maybe something in screenwriting? Because the jump cuts were like a hack trying to emulate Edgar Write's transition and montage style.... For an entire book
Who hurt you? (Was it me?) A great review of a book that sounds interesting and you saved me the trouble.
its a fun intro, i liked the joke. i just have a feeling for the future Seeing the way your new government is starting 2025 makes me feel like this kind of joke will age Like (hoping its not going to be but it feels like) Berlin wall germany / post berlin wall germany
lol, great review. I think I might skip this one, even if I find it in the wild super cheap. Even though that cover is pretty good!
I really wish you guys would start keeping a list of gonzo bonkers novels. I’m looking for the prose equivalent of the movie Eliminators - ninjas, jungle adventures, time travel, Roman soldiers, Mandroid, Denise Crosby - but in book form.
@@Strangepaper how have I not heard of this movie???
Pretentiousness is the pitfall that any writer can stumble into. POV hoping is difficult even for great writers. To include animal POVs is ... a choice. Great review. The joke that led to your opening was to sophomoric to post in the first place. It annoyed me but i won't unsubscribe over it.
That intro was fantastic 😂. Great review and I will just trust your judgement and find something else to read.

This is for you having to make that thing at the beginning. 🙄🙄🙄 This is for the fun review. 😄😄😄🤣
@@StormReads haha the beginning was fun, especially the cluster of homeless folks that were watching the entire Press Release and laughing! I'd feel bad about offending people, but the people who get upset over a joke are already upset about something else :)
Great review. It sounds like a new author who has promise but was trying too hard. Jumping around in the narrative to the point it becomes very confusing makes it seem almost as if he was attempting stream of consciousness, like James Joyce's Finnegans Wake or Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. It was a little pretentious of Guy Snyder to write as if he was already a literary genius, and a little unfair to his readership who was probably expecting simple entertainment with a bit of a twist. Not a genius work they have to slog through and in interpret like some poor undergrad trying to pass an English literature exam!
I agree, I feel like I would have loved Snyder's 4th book

Quoting Neil Breen has elevated your work to the next level(?) Testament XXI sounds like a fine premise that was much better done but much better writers. If you know Norn' Irishers you'll know he's only "takin' the p!ss" with that bio, seriously. The bit about "writing professionally as a hobby" is hilarious. Typically dry Northern Irish wit :D
@@Crabby303 hmm, I didn't read it like that, but you may be right. Have I been hating on White all this time without cause? I'd re-read this to be sure, but it was so boring haha!
@@PulpMortem I dunno tbh, I've not read any of his stuff but I've heard he could be great, mediocre and bad...but the bio.. hard to imagine any Nordie writing that straight-faced, especially way back. But then again who knows, maybe he actually was that much of a d!ck!
Black Easter was reprinted in last summer. I’ve read that one and A Case of Conscience, which won the Hugo Award, though I preferred Black Easter. I don’t mind fix-up novels. My favorite fix-up is Stormbringer, by Michael Moorcock.
Never disappointing

When I was in the Army, I served with a lot of different people. Some of the African-American soldiers were father figures to me and taught me to be a decent person and a leader. I’m really struggling today because my country has elected someone with a platform which says non-whites shouldn’t be hired at the VA because they don’t represent the typical veteran. If you’re interested, the section on the VA begins on page 641 of Project 2025 and it’s full of policies that discriminate against my brothers in arms. I don’t know what you’re going for here. Humor or something? It just comes across as insensitive and not reading the room. It’s not what I signed up for anyways. I’m interested in books, not cringey meme takes. It’s your channel bro, you do you. As for me, I’m out of here. Peace.
@@CptSamelsSigils No discrimination, I'm from a mixed family. Humor can often come across as insensitive, but I'm just poking a bit of fun at Albertsons abysmal ad layout - in fact, I poke fun at everything, myself not least of all. The 'Of Man and Manta trilogy' (Omnivore, Orn and 0X) is my favourite. I'm intrigued to hear what you make of it. And Philip Jose Farmer is excellent. He also wrote a 'biography' of Doc Savage.
I'm excited to read it. So many books, too little time!
