Based on flavor without productivity and earliness, which figs are redundant honestly? So many like black Madeira but how many are really almost repeats in your experience?
@@xaviercruz4763 - I think all the Mt. Etnas are basically the same. Many people have one that they like the best. It could be that they have a strong tree in an ideal location. Azores Dark was sold at a major premium due to simple marketing. Many people say many figs are black Madeira types and they are most definitely not. So much misinformation out there!
Do u have cuttings of brown sugar c?
@@xaviercruz4763 - I have gifted around 30 cuttings to friends. Unfortunately, that is all I’m taking this year.
I wouldn't advise the use of hay to protect to protect the tree. Hay has lots of seeds and I know this from first hand experience of buying straw from my local farm that was more like hay than straw. Basically you may end up with lots of weeds that may then outcompete the fig and you will have to weed intensely. I would advise one to use the leaves of trees that don't have juglone and or wood chips. I'm still weeding my yard in zone 7B +2 years later from that one time I applied straw. Overall I agree with the importance of winter protection and the necessity of lignification and I enjoy your videos.
@@tiger1554 Good point!
It’s interesting that so many wild seedlings are found thriving in drainage ditches. Black Manzanita for instance - just a couple feet out of the center of a drainage ditch - and has grown happily there for many years. Perhaps the key is having them be adjacent to the main runoff so they can get water as needed but not have the roots waterlogged?
The difference is that a drainage ditch in CA is much drier than in the Willamette Valley. I noticed hundreds of seedlings when I hunted for wild figs near Oroville, CA. Our wet season is much longer than most of CA. The deer and figs were down at the drainage as we hunted in the 100F heat. It looked like typical desert as we hiked out. Look at the wildfires in LA right now. Those canyons are loaded with seedlings. You see how dry it is there? Fig trees need the extra water from drainages down there. The roots are not totally saturated for long down there. Not so much in the Willamette Valley! The two words I constantly repeat regarding growing figs are, “Location Specific”. I’m hoping others with more visibility start repeating these two words! Prayers go out to those affected by the wildfires in LA. 😢
I think your term waterlogged is spot on. I also like your theory about root proximity to a water source. Great thoughts. I appreciate your input!
Great video. Hope you're doing OK. I'm the one in Eugene with pawpaw trees. Just checking to see if I could get a few varieties of cuttings that I might not have. Thanks!
I have a few varieties that I am trying to get more established before gifting cuttings.
How does one go about buying a cutting from you?
@@C3Voyage - I just gifted all my cuttings for the year to friends.
Do you have any cuttings of this one available for sale?
I do not. Harvey will be selling cuttings very soon. His business is called Figaholics.
How far apart are you planting your trees?
@@LubyBendily 18’ between both the plants and the rows.
Thanks for the review, sounds amazing. If I already have calderona, do you think it's still worth picking this one up given the similarity?
@@elihart5951 Yes I think you need Borda Barraquer as well. It is different than Calderona. This tasting it tasted similar. Who knows, it could be different next year.
Im still lmao 😂😂😂 NOBODY i know has ever tasted DK main crop?? you are very bold my friend 😂😂😂
Eye size ?
@@jackhart1883 - The eye is tiny. Good candidate for wet climates!
@ that’s what I’m in need of. N.FL now all I have to do is find the cuttings. Thank you and Happy New Year Chris
It looks delicious, Happy New Year Chris 🎉🎉.. Seeing a fig video is the Best New Year present EVER❤ Who knew, something amazing came out of 9-11?? I've always dreaded that day, maybe it's time I moved on. ❤ thanks buddy..
@@telasims233 The mention of 9/11 is still difficult for me to this date! So many innocent people died and so many fantastic first responders made me proud - never forget! I have tears in my eyes as I write this. 😢
@oregonfigs3314 we'll NEVER forget, but, just seeing a perfectly ripened fig. In the winter is a sign that we can't live our lives hating the day.. there's beauty in every day..

Beautiful! Have you found this variety viable in -ground in the Willamette valley?
@@NavyDoc0884 - I put it in ground for potential Brebas. Much too late for main crop in ground! I really like the taste of the Brebas. We don’t know if it will be a PROLIFIC Breba crop yet. There are at least three of us with I258 planted in ground in the Willamette Valley. We will either all be happy or…. If it doesn’t work in ground for Brebas, I will pull it.
I’m receiving my rooted I258 cutting from you today. I can’t wait.
i havn't seen this one for sale anywhere, but I am keeping my eye out for it
I think part of the problem is the limited initial release of this fig coupled with a mixup from the original seller. I was lucky enough to get the real version. My tree has grown slowly and cutting it at this point would not be a good idea. I hope to share it in the future and have several requests for cuttings when that time comes.
thanks for the excellent and informative video Chris; I grow figs in Victoria, BC and have a hard time getting brebas on many of my trees. You are doing a great job with your figs! John in Victoria.
@@Athabina - Thank you John. Victoria is a very special place in the PNW - beautiful!🤩
Wow amazing video!! Thanks for sharing!! 🤗🦋🤗
I saw on FigBid that besides some figs, you are selling 20 varieties of pomegranates. You’ve been holding out on us! Why no pomegranate videos? So many varieties, and it’s harder to find information on varieties than it is for figs.
@@margaretmarshall3645 - That is Ian who is located up in the Portland area. He also supplies trees for One Green World. I like his name though 😁
@ Oh, I see. Thanks for the quick reply-and for NOT holding out on us. 😉 Now we just have to persuade HIM to start an OREGON POMEGRANATES AND FIGS RUclips channel!
@@margaretmarshall3645 That would be cool.
Great video! From your influence, I rooted a Crozes last winter that’s in the ground now but only 1 foot tall, here in SoCal. Hoping I get to taste it next summer. It stayed HOT here through mid-August this year. Cool now as Thanksgiving approaches, but no hard freeze yet. The one fig tree I’m still getting pretty nice figs off of is my first year graft of Del San Jaume Gran. It may be too late a fig for your area, though.
Oregonfigs, you also grow Calderona figs. Do YOU think they are the same? If so, which do you most recommend? Oh Never Mind, I see you have already done a video comparing the two, and determined that they are pretty much indistinguishable. Thanks! I’ll watch FigBid and try to pick up whichever is cheaper!
@@margaretmarshall3645 - I think they are so close that it does not matter which one you get. They both fight FMV in my yard!
You're so blessed to have a season that lasts almost till Nov. Our season has BEEN over. I wouldn't DARE eat a fig now, unless I just love torture 😂😅😂
How do you prevent or lower the risk of transfer shock to the plant?
@@geriannroth449 - Very little transfer shock if you do this before bud break in the early spring.
Do you sell cuttings for the roxburgh fig too?
@@geriannroth449 - If I sell early next year, it will probably be on the Facebook group called USA Fig Sales & Swaps.
@@oregonfigs3314 fabulous
Thank you very much for the great advice!
Thanks Chris! I’m always trying to gauge whether a particular variety can be grown in the PNW without extending the season.
Yum! Did it have a head start and/or finish in the green house?
@@jonahschmidt5117 - This one got a three week head start in a pop up greenhouse. I never extend the season in the fall as I would rather have figs before it gets colder.
So, eh then.
@@C3Voyage Still a young tree - it should get better!
Curious, how productive is it? It sounds great but if it only produces 5-10 figs, than it is not worth it to me.
@@Memyselfandionyoutube - Not very productive for me. I have a difficult time getting a significant main crop on most lates. This would work best in a Zone 9 or above.
What have you tried to tackle these late season issues? I.e. have you tried using canopies to fend off the rain? Have you tried heat sink stones, pavers, etc. to raise soil temps? Having them in ground obviously makes hauling them into a greenhouse unrealistic, but I’m curious what if anything has worked for you. I’m in the Willamette Valley too and love your channel.
@@jonahschmidt5117 - These lates were all grown in 15G pots. I do not manipulate the trees at the end of the season. I’ve been growing for here for eight years and I do not have the energy to try to extend the season. As my buddy Eric says, the lates are no more than a novelty for us”. His RUclips channel is Loftinart. I am trying to get my 15G pot total down to 20 (eventually 15). I have done well with potted lates grown in a favorable microclimate. My real excitement is with my orchard trials. I’m doing something that has not been reported on here and believe I have an obligation to spread the truth. Hopefully, this helps many focus on what makes sense here.
Looking forward to your end of season orchard walkthrough, when you talk about winners and losers and strategy going forward. What you're doing is really important, and you're doing it well!
Thank you George. I think I should discover several varieties that people do not typically associate with the Willamette Valley. Hopefully, I have opened eyes about Campaniere, LDA, Brown Sugar Crunch and Biffaro Zeus in ground here. I have so many new Breba trees planted that I’m really excited about. Always appreciate your feedback!
I was looking forward to that LAST fig? They looked SO AMAZING, think about it, he could have easily lied and said, they were SO sweet, I would have totally believe it... I really enjoyed the season. ❤
Hi Chris, how's this fig performing this year in ground? Any main crops ripened for you? Thanks for the insight!
@@ZhangSailei - Tons of main crop figs that ripened too late. It went in ground for Breba crop. So far I have not had any Brebas either. I will get a few more years in ground as the Breba crop can take a few years.
@@oregonfigs3314 thank you Chris for the info! For my limited space, I think it will stay in pot 😅
@@ZhangSailei - Keep it in a pot!
Great videography. The blurred greenery and darker background contrasts with light reddish color of the fruit and amber honey dripping off it in the foreground; shading; and crystal clear focus makes the tiny white "hairs" on the fig branch visible. @@oregonfigs3314 I am. Greetings from Norway. 🤓
You have really nice trees, I like the space you have for all of them. Would you consider doing a trimming back video? Oh by the way, are the Turkeys gone now, or are you having one over for Thanksgiving dinner....... Just trying to think of an up side...
The turkeys have had their fill and are still around at this point. Your Thanksgiving dinner comment made me chuckle. Most of my trees are very young and won’t be trimmed for three more years. I could do a video on my small group of trees that I planted several years ago.
