The OTO Ranch is the oldest dude ranch in Montana, and its fate hangs in the balance. Largely dormant for decades save for wildlife and the occasional day tripper, a recent pop-up dude ranch experiment was a window into what the Forest-Service operated historic site could be. Upon invite, Mountain Outlaw contributor Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan attended a stay at the pop-up ranch followed by further...

Mountain Outlaw The Shooter Thomas Mangelsen Profile
Fascinating!
Why do people care about the bulls getting hurt more than the bull riders? Like the riders die and break bones when bull riding, and so do the bulls! But both riders and bulls get treatment when they are injured.
Wonderful poem that captures the conundrum of the disappearing West. Poetic parallels given much thought!!!!!
Thank you beautifully done GOD bless
Awe...
Soh ehn dohh, that’s the way.
Do or did people think the bulls were mistreated? Never even crossed my mind that these guys and gals would hurt their bulls.
Hoe zit het met die bewegende intieme gedeelte!?( al dat heftige harde heen en weer geschud ? )???..Is dat niet erg, of pijnlijk?
Very cool little documentary. Philipsburgh brewery is pretty cool. Was Friday night Pizza open when u went there?
Our most beloved and missed friend and neighbor
Thanks. Tap’er lite.
In my next life, think I might "raise "bulls, not breed them, my better half might get mad...no more for the season, ennitt!!
what breeds are they? always wondered that, they are really cool animals. Ive always guess Brahman mix but i dont know the other part!
Started out as, if it buckedcwell, you used it. So a LOT of mixing going on in the background, leading to some pretty specialized bloodlines at this point.
Sorry, this video did not answer how the owners got the bulls to behave like they do. Would you kindly explain the process?
They pretty much learned it themselves after doing it time and time again
Thank you for filming this video, it is very informative as the comment below said. I can now enjoy going to PBR without feeling emotional thinking they were getting treated bad but by all means they are treat like royalty and cared for. Thank you 😊
As it should be, its our duty as humans to provide and nurture animals.
Was that a UFO in the sky?!?😮 play the video to 41 seconds it’s in the sky til about 44-45 seconds then it jus vanishes in thin air!

After 35 years of running the Middle Fork I have seen a lot. And I know that this makes me old, but this is weird. See you this summer.
Are they penned like this all the time?
No. They're only penned like that at events.
I despair on the attitude of the authorities (Fish and Game+) and some others of our species towards these animals. Shame on them. Leave the bears be, stop hazing and stop hunting. We have a responsibility to protect our bear and animal population and not execute them for so called 'sport'.
These bulls are treated good you cannot compare with the Spanish bullfighting or for that matter... I like this PBR show, I feel more sorry for the Cowboys risking their lives and health but also have much respect for them... Wonder where I could follow this bcz I am from Belgium, and we not have these kinds of American sport even we have some serious bulls and powerful horses.
I follow it on youvtube....
Thank you Tom for all you do!
Very informative video, I truly think if bulls were being abused we'd have more deaths out on the Rodeo because those animals can fight back.

The life of a bucking bull is getting abused
Schleich Person100 plz explain how there abused? There not shocked yes that’s a myth you guys made up. The flank strap is covered with cotton so it’s not painful it just helps them kick up and out more. They work for 8 seconds and then are done for a while. They get some of the best feed out there, there treated like kings lol
Lisa Britz the spurs that stab and rake at their sides also the bucking strap doesn’t ‘help them buck’ it irritates them so they do buck
Schleich Person100 didn’t say it helped them buck I said it helps kick out and up more lol if they don’t wanna buck they won’t. I use spurs on my roping/ cutting horse and I’ve never raked him or made him bleed he can be a little lazy at times so it’s just a reminder I’m still there and it’s not time for a break. If you look there’s no cuts on the bulls that were created by spurs they look like there healthy and well taken care of
Lisa Britz it’s a routine that is why they buck and don’t tell me the spurs don’t hurt spurs are made for a small graze at the sides not continuously jabbing at their sides these people are misusing them and it’s disguising I can’t believe u would support this
Schleich Person100 yes there are some nasty people out there that do misuse them and only in it for money that I don’t support and anyone that wants to be respected would never support that. But it’s very uncommon to find rodeos like that thankfully! There’s just as much abuse and cruelty in the English world to there no more or no less in both disciplines. I’m in high school rodeo and the spurs really aren’t much more then nubs the spurs aren’t what makes them buck they do that themselves if the bulls doesn’t wanna buck he won’t I’ve seen it a lot of times where the bull just walks out or stand in the gate which proves that there not shocked. Some ppl believe they are but it’s not aloud in rodeos
Don't look like much of a life just standing around in a pen. He don't even have blades of grass to count. Give them something to stimulate their mind CMON dude you can do better than that. They should be stimulated at least 3 hours a day or when he wants to. But best feed best Dr buck a few cowboys the rest of his life he is watching paint dry. Wow
They had them penned up to shoot this segment. They don't keep them in there all the time lol.
@@kanthony1446 I hope not he looked pretty bored
They were showing his bulls in the pens at an event. They are turned out to pasture when they are home.
You act like all they do is sat and around in a back pen their whole life 😂😂 that’s only for a few hours a week bro!
And when there is a show those bulls don’t sleep in those pens they go to a barn close by and sleep there. PBR makes sure they are well housed
Everything involving our animals is at risk of a future because of the animal rights crowd. They have a fetishism for abuse and see everything threw that lens. Every industry must be on the offence to save our lives with animals.
@@horseygurl143 my point proven by you and your comment. Thanks.
100% true!
@@horseygurl143 Cheers from Santa Barbara. Please don't let the cruel behavior of a few, well publicized individuals, ruin your opinion of the entire Bucking Bull industry. This man, with this video, is showing his own personal truth. That he truely loves, cares for and respects his animals, both inside and outside of the Arena. He is proud of his Bulls. His Bulls get quality feed, regular turnout, and quality Veterinary Care. The PBR considers Bulls to be athletes, as well as the rider. This care and dedication is something to be admired, and promoted, as an honest depiction of the animals who are working in the arena, at the Professional Rodeo Circuit. You may not agree that Bulls should be used for Bucking. That is your belief, and I can respect that, and I won't challenge you on your personal beliefs. However, the Professional Rodeo Circuit DOES NOT condone, or recommend, "Electric Shock" for Bucking Bulls, prior to going into the show arena. This practice is illegal, and not supported or participated in, by the Breeders, or The Professional Rodeo Circuit. Have a great day, and I hope this helps alleviate some of your worries. The Professional Rodeo Circuit DOES NOT condone the use of electric shock to torture their Bucking Bulls. It is illegal. People who are caught doing this, are sanctioned by the Professional Bull Riding Association. You can call and ask. They are very helpful with your questions. The PBR is an excellent organization. There primary interest is the welfare of their Bulls.
One rabbit gets a little cut from a fence Animal right activist:you mosters
@@ratherbwithhorses I agree
I think professional rodeos in general are cruel. Look up SHARK (showing animals respect and kindness). They have hundreds of videos of rodeo animals being mistreated as well as numerous deaths that went unreported by corrupt rodeo officials and vets. Please look them up.
Just Julie You’re obviously extremely uneducated on this matter and have no business whatsoever chiming in. You’re just like the rest of the idiots that feed into the fake news and bs and hang your hat on the first thing you hear. Bulls are for the most part taken care of better than humans. Don’t be such a tit bag.
3reasons GCF the fact that you sunk so low as to insult me, personally, and resorted to name calling shows everyone how intelligent you are.
The same could be said about hospitals. Bet you still go to one in an emergency. The ratio of incidents to number of events is staggeringly low. There are some bad apples out there, I'm not going to pretend there isn't. But any reputable livestock contractor takes care of his animals better than himself. The ones that don't, usually don't last long as word gets around. Also, the majority of individuals crying abuse, especially in regards to the aids used for bucking/riding the bull, have zero knowledge as to the anatomy and behaviourism of cattle.
kanthony 65 I agree that a livestock contractor takes very good care of their cattle, equine etc. What happens to the animal after it is sold or leased is beyond their control. "Big Rodeo" is bad, Cheyenne, Calgary, Salinas etc. Small rodeo is good.
3reasons GCF BTW, do you love trump?
Chad Berger's the best with bulls, hands down! The Best Ever!
I believe as a country, we are all loosing a connection to the Wild Wind. Your title is Facing the West Wind. We forget the soul of the West, is "Wild." This, in itself, speaks to authenticity. My simple, but not easy idea, is to integrate Bison, in with the current cattle industry. This business model could help mitigate problems with the wild wolf population. Bison could also potentially be used, in addition to cattle, for the Professional Rodeo Circuit. Leather goods, tourism, and Bison meat, are also viable commodities that could be utilized with this integrative business model. Thanks for your consideration. Sincerely, Rayven.
Good morning Montana OutLaw, From Santa Barbara, Ca. I have a question regarding Bison, or as more commonly described, Buffalo. Do you think there is substantial enough interest, and any viable reason, for the Professional Rodeo Community, to include Buffalo on the Professional Rodeo Circuit? I, for one, would like to see Buffalo used, because they could bring additional interest to the sport of rodeo. Also, buffalo could potentially be used for team penning, cutting, and calf roping. Please let me know your thoughts in this area. Thank you, so much, for the information regarding the care of your bucking bulls. Your Bulls are stunning, and the picture of health. Have a great day, Rayven.
Low blow: Montecito rocks!!! Goleta, too!
Make it happen, if you can figure out how to do it. Throw some good added money into the events and they will enter.
@@Josephguestable Sounds like you like the idea of Bison being used on the Professional Rodeo Circuit, too. I believe it could be fun.
Low Blow I think it would be neat for team roping if you could make a header harness fit. I’m just not sure what other events you could put them to work in. I’ve seen a beefalo or 2 in the back pens in my day as well 😂
@@Josephguestable I'm just a novice Bull Riding enthusiast. My thought was that buffalo could easily be used for cutting, calf roping, team penning, steer wrestling, Bull riding, racing, ext. They are a type of bovine, after all, aren't they? Perhaps not so easily. I do Dressage, which is the training of the horse, for Sword Fighting. Those Europeans. Also, I do 3 day eventing, which is the Military Training For War, on Horseback. Cavalrymen type riding. I just think buffalo are cool, a native animal, and a viable animal to put to work, as well as a potential boost to viewership.
