A problem with the NHS is not the NHS itself, it is who is using it. Brits pay into it all their working lives and expect to receive prompt and good care. I have long thought that the NHS really should look into using a 2-tier system. One for Brits and one for immigrants and illegals. My 90 year old mother should not have to wait behind a person who arrived in the UK last month! If one surveys doctors' surgeries a huge number of patients are not Brits. Non Brits use the services of the NHS much more readily than Brits and so it is no wonder that many non urgent surgeries have a long wait period. We are a small country and we simply cannot afford to be giving non Brits all the services that we Brits have paid for and continue to pay for.

Unless you have lived in the US for an extended time or actually been sick and received bills, people in Britain have NO idea how awful the for-profit health system is. Over 50% of all bankruptcies in US are due to medical bills. I have had extensive experience in both systems and I thank God for the NHS.

It's all about collective bargaining , the more of you join the gang, the more power you have (sadly, our Tory party hates that, like Trump) you want good emergency access & health care throughout your life ? Don't vote Tory (or Reform, they're so much further right than even the Tories)

The NHS isn’t perfect. But, when my daughter was born my wife had an emergency cesarian & almost died. I can’t imagine dealing with all of that….then get a bill. God bless the NHS, you’re one of the things I’m proud of Britain for.

There a number of American-discuses-NHS videos. None appear to discuss dental care - which is a 'problem' in UK. How does that compare - of course there is the trope that all British people have bad teeth!

You ain't gonna die from a bad knee. You will get bumped down the queue by more life threatened patients. Your 9 month wait, I wouldn't hold your breath. Some granny takes a header off the toilet, and her hip gets your surgical slot before your knee. Rest assured you WILL be bumped, but triage is a bitch.

The NHS is so cheap (even via tax) because we don't tolerate the profiteers much. The industry charges way more there for the same thing. Remember Biden's initiative to cut the cost of insulin ? That problem runs right through.

As I am of a certain age and I have a compromised immune system (diabetes) I get all these free of charge. I have also been vaccinated for everything you can think of, virtually since I was born.

I looked after my mother in her house for a year of her life. She had twice weekly home visits from a community nurse. Frequent visits from physio therapist her doctor and a nurse practitioner, who actually turn up a couple of time unannounced just to check how she was. We were given a hospital style bed a wheelchair and other aids to make her life easier All her medication was delivered. We had to call an ambulance about 5 times all arrived within 10 minutes. We are so grateful that my mother was able to spend her final year in the home she loved without having to worry about the cost

UK: my friend is 68. He was a low paid worker in earlier life, and never paid much into the system. He was diagnosed with chronic lung disease in his 40s and became unable to work. Then in 2017 at 60 he had a life-threatening cardiac arrest and has a defibrillator fitted. Since then he’s also had urgent bowel surgery and gall bladder removal. He lives comfortably and quietly in a small flat on benefits and owns a vehicle . He has appointments with various medics regularly (at least once a week) and is on loads of daily medication. All at no charge. He has no savings really but has no financial worries. USA: Meanwhile one of my brother’s in-laws in the USA had to have his child airlifted to hospital a while back. The initial charge wasn’t all covered by insurance and he spent months negotiating to the costs down from around $100k to nearer $20k. The stress of that kind of financial pressure must make people ill.

The struggles the NHS has is a choice by government. Some think it's a drain on our economy, but if your population is healthy, they will be well enough to ensure the health of the country and its economy. That said, the NHS runs on tea.

US healthcare tiers: 1. Get elected to congress, get free healthcare for life while trying to pass laws to take benefits away from your fellow citizens. 2. Be wealthy enough to be able to afford the best healthcare, with the best benefits, and call everyone else lazy for not being able to afford healthcare. 3. Be middle class, have your healthcare cost a disproportionate amount of your income, go bankrupt if you ever have a serious disease. 4. Be poor working class, get subsidies or Medicaid, worry about it being yanked out from under you (see #1), be treated as a burden, rather than a source of income, by the industry. 5. Be very poor and single ages 18-65, with no dependents, and don’t qualify for any healthcare at all. Nope, not Medicaid, and not ACA subsidies. Serious disease? Hope you can find charity because your only other choice is death. Did I miss any?

Did you know that American tax payers pay 3-4 times as much as UK tax payers per capita in funding Healthcare. This figure for the US does not include Health Insurance or other healthcare costs. The UK tax contribution covers everything. I big chunk of this money goes directly to the Health Insurance industry and Drug companies to encourage them to keep prices "affordable"... That is CRIMINAL.

I'm a Brit that has worked in America. When I raised the NHS over there the standard reaction was disparaging - thats socialist medicine. I would reply firstly I'm not a socialist but if I was is that a sin? I found many Americans brainwashed about this while getting bankrupted by their healthcare. Any Americans I have worked with over here are like these folks - they undergo enlightenment and no longer live in fear of a health episode they will get first world healthcare and not be frightened of the cost. Will the Trump Republicans with their 'concept of a plan' improve this? No. Well you voted them in now if you get sick God Help You.

In Northern Ireland (and I believe in Scotland) prescriptions are free. I have a heart condition. My medication costs me zero and there's a lot of it. Waiting times are long for planned treatment. Emergency treatment is pretty much instantaneous, in that you're triaged and initial treatment is very quick. Waiting for a bed is a bit of a nightmare apparently although I've never had an issue.

The National Trust AND/ OR English Heritage memberships are wonderful value. Look at the properties both of them offer. You might prefer one to the other. EH for my family. Some properties are both NT and EH (eg Studeley Royal is NT + Fountains Abbey is EH, near Ripon) so both sets of members get to go in those two properties which adjoin each other. I am sure my wife and I save money each year on our membership of EH as a result of the places we visit. Whitby Abbey (a MUST see), Pickering Castle, Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle, Fountains Abbey, Middleham Castle, Richmond Castle, Mount Grace Priory, Walkworth Castle etc etc. That is just a few of the Yorkshire sites! There are Welsh (eg Cadw) and Scottish equivalents, too.

Hopefully it is just peer pressure and not bullying, if your children are confident enough they will find their own feet. The 4 day fine is new to me - as I am Scottish educated. Scotland has its own educational system which differs. I wouldn’t say it was better or worse. In a couple of years ( which may seem a lifetime to your girls at the moment) will soon pass. And things will hopefully seem different. All the very best to you all. Rab from Scotland❤
