The thing is, though, when these studies were done did they separate out people who are considered biologically “short” sleepers, people who are biologically “normal” sleepers, and people who are biologically “long” sleepers? We know we have people in all three categories. We also know something like 90% of the population are “normal” sleepers. So if you have a person who is biologically wired to sleep 4 hours per night, could 5 hours per night be extremely unhealthy for them equivalent to or even worse than when a person who is biologically wired to sleep 8 hours sleeps 9 hours (depending on if it is total hours of extra sleep or percentage of extra sleep that matters most)? And is it also possible equivalent roughly to the person who is biologically wired to sleep 12 hours when they sleep 13 hours? Basically, is science finding that people who are biologically wired to sleep way shorter or longer than normal are by definition unhealthy, or is science determining simply that regularly sleeping more or less than you are biologically wired to sleep that is unhealthy? This difference matters a ton, and I never hear anyone talking about it when they quote these statistics. If these studies were done just on the population in general without first accounting for if a person is biologically a “normal” sleeper, then by definition the study is only going to say things about “normal” sleepers because such a high percentage of the population are “normal” sleepers. But if the study participants were actually separated into groups of short, normal, and long and there was a statistically significant number of participants in each group, then we actually can say things about hours needed of sleep instead of hours need ex compared to your BIOLOGICAL BASELINE. To use another example, adults on average may need say 2,000 calories of food. I know there’s some debate around that number, but it was said at one point. But if you have an adult woman who is only 2 feet tall compared to a male professional weightlifter who is 7 feet tall, do you really think it’s fair to tell the short female that she’s anorexic if she say only eats 1,000 calories or the weightlifter who is 7 feet tall that he is morbidly obese if he eats 3,000 calories? Individual baseline needs matter when determining the meaning of being outside the population averages.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed listening and learning. 🙏🏼 However, as I try to implement into everyday life, it’s difficult to sort through the multitude of products and variations. Does Dr Sims have any specific recommendations?? For example, when she spoke about the nighttime regimen to help her sleep while traveling, (200mg L-Theanine and 600mg Rhodiola)… does it matter if you consume capsules, powders, tinctures?? Organic (is there even such a thing 🤦🏼‍♀️)? Is this a regimen you would only recommend for a short period of time? Vitamin D - 2000iu recommendation, is that daily, weekly? Collagen peptides and undenatured collagen… how much of each and can you get them in one product? Powder, capsules… 😩 I’m 55 and likely postmenopausal (I had an ablation 15 years ago, so there’s no way of knowing my “last cycle”). I’ve been blindsided 🤯🤬 by the effects of menopause. I am mad as he!! that my body seems to have abandoned me, and even more disgusted that it was never even on my radar as something to prepare for differently. My theory has always been… age is just a number 👊🏻However, the more I learn about menopause, especially from Dr. Sims 🙌🏻, the more I realize how much I don’t know about this amazing stage in my life. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can’t get enough knowledge in my arsenal against aging!! Again, thank you so much for sharing this information! I certainly don’t want to come across as ungrateful, simply the more I learn, the more I want to learn! Cheers 🎉

Also ... feeding your children food that has been "fortified" is not a good idea, sorry. Our children are really, really compromised... in utero, at birth and beyond. 54% of children under 10 in the US have a chronic disease! OMG. 72% of the food our children consume is ultra-proceeded. That's 'average' therefore, that means a huge number are at 90%. Not a good idea. Yes, it would be ideal to not supplement our children, however, our 'conventional' food supply is toxic. Parents need to be diligent and purposeful. Build a healthy relationship with 'real' food. Period. Go outside, get dirty, avoid sunscreen (wear a hat midday), avoid screen time, talk to your kids, let them be your little helper in the kitchen & around the house. Move every day. Dr Sims I truly appreciate your work and have adjusted a lot of my protocol based on your recommendations (creatine, lift very heavy things) and I realize you don't focus on children. With that being said, your honesty about NO research on actual women ... there is NO research on our vulnerable children, either. Thank you.

Maybe 90% is good enough? It might even be the case that adopting 50% of his recommendations would give you 100% of the benefits, as long as your baseline diet and lifestyle are already optimized, or close to optimized. The benefits and effect sizes he cites are for those whose baselines are SAD and horrible. For higher baselines, the effect size is much smaller, or perhaps non-existent. I'm leaning toward not trying to do everything he recommends. My diet and lifestyle are already great. I do not think I will benefit much from most of his recommendations. Trying to do it all, and do it "perfectly," could even shorten healthspan and reduce quality of life because of all the complications, expenses, time, worry, and lack of a sense of freedom from worrying, fretting and fear. I would rather live freely. That makes for a higher quality of life, especially when there is little or no difference in the span. What about the opportunity costs also? Time spent "doing it perfectly" can be substantial. When you subtract that, the remaining time is shorter.
