Great bit of history, I used to have a look through the Grey st one when I was young, and could fit thru. a hole, and nowadays I can still see a smidgen of the one at Waikanae next to the walkway. Good to see the old Home Guard, I reakon their may have been a few character's like in the tv program Dad's Army.

Hi Robert, unfortunately there are almost no photographs of the beach pillboxes from the time apart from the aerial photographs. On our blog you can see one photograph of the pillbox in the background of a post-war photograph (this is thought to be the one by the walkway now almost completely covered by the dunes). tairawhitimuseum.org.nz/2020/04/15/tairawhiti-ww2-memories-defence-preparations/ Aerial photographs from the era are our main source. We always hope that more photographs may come to light! Thanks for your question, Eloise Wallace

I swear, the family that owned the land would had been laughing. Also, timber/wood and sticks were left there so we could fashion time weapons. And then... We sitting in this pill box on a hill. With stick guns. Bro gets up. "Fk let's go home."

Myself and two older brothers were christened here between 1948-1951 by my Grandfather who was Vicar of the church at the time. Our family lived in the vicarage for a couple of years. He was minister in the 1932 earthquake and the falling roof narrowly missed him by the grace of God. After his tenure here he was vicar of St Pauls in Paeroa and became Archdeacon of the Hawkes Bay district. At the 39sec mark it looks like him standing beside the memorial but I may be mistaken. He died in Paeroa 1956.
