EP 54: Subframe Restoration / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
I decided not to powder coat the subframe. I ended up just painting it with a spray can, and it actually turned out pretty nice. I also upgraded to adjustable spring plates, which required having to source a pair of shorter Type 1 torsion bars to go with them. While I have everything out, I might as well replace all the rubber bushings that I can.

EP 53: Subframe Removal / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
Просмотров 35714 дней назад
Subframe Removal will probably be as far down the disassembly I'll go. Any more than that, I don't think I'd be able to stop fixing all the small things, and this would take much much longer to get back on the road. Perhaps in the future, I'll separate the Pan/Body, but today is not the day. I decided to remove the entire rear subframe to be able to replace all the bushings. The ones that came ...
EP 52: Short Axle Swap / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
Просмотров 67821 день назад
Okay, maybe I haven't dug around as much, but I could not for the life of me find any videos of any type 3 short axle conversions. Since I was already doing the work, I figured I'd do an in depth video on how it all gets put together and what parts are needed. Hopefully this helps! If after watching this video and you still want the novel version, here's the write up! Let me know which one you ...
EP 51: Engine and Transmission Removal / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
Просмотров 95821 день назад
There's a bunch of stuff I need to do, but in no particular order. I decided to pull the engine and transmission before putting the beam back on. No reason, just felt like it. Big plans coming up! EP 50: Brake Disassembly / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
Просмотров 31521 день назад
With the gas tank removed and the front beam out of the way, now is the time to also remove the brake system. I've had all the replacement parts for a while, so now would be the best time to work on this. Continuing to strip this thing down until I get to a point where I'm ready to build it back up. Просмотров 725Месяц назад
Okay, I've been able to visit some of the VW events I've been waiting for. Now that's out of the way, time to dig into the Squareback again. The rebuilt beam has been sitting for some time, and it's almost ready to go back in. First thing is to get the old one out of the way. There's not a lot of info online on how to do the removal, so hopefully this helps some of you guys out. Instagram: @sir...

If you're in Southern California, or at least in the greater Los Angeles area, you'll know that June is the month of Volkswagen. Building a 1776cc with my Kuya
Просмотров 276Месяц назад
So my brother Ian has been wanting to rebuild his engine since the day he bought his 1974 Karmann Ghia a few months ago. Small upgrades here and there have been done to it since, but we finally pulled the trigger and started working on it. We ended up going the same route as what I did with my setup, but wanted a little MORE POWER BABY! 1776cc seemed like a nice little upgrade from the 1600cc, ...

There's still so much left for me to do before I can actually play around with wheels.... but if you know me, you' know I love love wheels. They completely change the look of any car. I still have to work on replacing my front beam to the one I've built on the side, as well as a number of projects I have planned for the square before I can actually change my wheel setup. EP 47: Straightening out the Front Apron / 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback
Просмотров 7983 месяца назад
I've known I had to fix this ever since I bought the Squareback almost 5 years ago. I'm definitely not a body guy. I can fix almost anything mechanically and some electronically, but body work is a whole nother art that I am by no means good at. I've pretty much avoided this up until I absolutely had to fix. Now because I've spent so much time/money/effort in getting the front beam rebuilt, the...

Great video excited to see you finish it! ✌🏼
Yeah buddy! All clean and all good! The saw mark scribe lines are genius! Im excited to hear how it rides with the adjustable spring plates. Are they also extended to correct rear toe?
Lowering is hard on suspension components.
You’re hard on suspension components
Bro.. next time you need extra storage for feet pics, let me know! I gotchu!
Ah good to know. I’ll just need you to sign an NDA first lol
Great video ✌🏼
Awesome as always. I’ve got zero experience but have read that it’s not really feasible to combine the subframe and tranny off of the car and install it as a single unit. Maybe someone else who knows better can elaborate. Cheers.👍
I appreciate the comment, dude.
Well done Jeremy. Appreciate all of the hard work and videos you keep producing for the Type 3 followers. Cheers.
thanks, bud!
Graet job on the video it was very intriguing. And it sounds great 👍
sounds really good!!
Very satisfying video. Not sure why, but it almost seemed familiar..
It’s actually the exact same set up as what I used for my very first engine build time lapse from several years ago (the very first video in my squareback restoration playlist). Same pieces of scrap metal bars with the same hardware to mount the (newer) camera onto the same engine stand :)
@@jeremydoc if it works..
Dang you guys work fast!!!
Dope
Nice work. My advice is to do subframe, then trans.
Wow you are tearing her down!! You should drive down this weekend to the San Juan Capistrano VW Take. Over this weekend ✌🏼
Nice job!!
Great little tutorial!!!
Cant wait to see the new set up!
How did I not comment on this! I wonder how a more narrow tire would work on those rears. Like a stock 165/80/15
Innovative repairs are fun to find! I once made a bushing out of an old socket on my old Mk2 Jetta. I wonder if anyone will ever find it
At least use a 10mm socket so it’s more of a “gift” to the future owner 😅
Man I remember showing someone my squareback fresh out of paint and bragging about all the shaved bodywork when he said “I hope you never have to replace your shifter linkage” 😮😢
Did you block off that plate in the front?!
@@jeremydoc the circular plug hole in the front clip
Such an awesome event
While watching you fighting the removal of the lines, it made me think of how I use my mighty vac to suck new fluid to each brake. It might also work to evacuate the lines of fluid for an operation like this.
That definitely would have been wiser than just letting them drain like I did 😅
@@jeremydoc I can throw no stones for doing whatever in the moment! Most of my good ideas happen after I’ve done something!
Heck to the yeah man this will look killer all narrowed up
Also, I think I recall somebody mentioning putting a thick dab of grease on the back side of those side plates to hold them in place
Snap ring pliers. You're making me hungry to pull my engine and transmission. Nice being able to live vicariously through you on this one!
Yeah, brain fart on the pliers. “Thingy” is my go-to haha.
@@jeremydoc no judgment from this guy.. just understanding!!
Nice job as always!!!!
@@billcamp2351 I appreciate that, bro
Nice work Brother. I can send you a plane ticket anytime you want to come to Florida and work on my race car. You are an excellent mechanic very good at attention to detail.
Very nice of you to say, I won’t turn down a free plane ticket haha. Just out here trying to be like you, Darrin!
I did this same swap years ago now but only recently added/welded the original Z bar guides to the axle tubes also.
Dude, I was just talking to my brother about this. Did you chop off the ones off your Type 3 tubes and welded onto the Type 1’s or did you just custom fabricate your own and welded onto the tubes? Also, before you did this, did you notice any significant difference when not using the Z-bar?
@@jeremydocI found a second set of the type 3 axle tubes and cut off the z bar guides as I wanted to keep my original set as spares, then welded on the new while the tubes were still attached to the box. My car is still in resto so I haven’t driven it yet.
get yourself a proper distributor with vacuum, the carbs are designed for it.
Refer to Episode 36 haha
6:14? 🤷🏻♂️😄
Damn bro Now you got me wanting to tear apart my 67 🤦🏻♂️✌🏼
I’ve been wanting to do it a while now, just been waiting for the right time to do everything all at once. Maybe start making a list of everything you want to do, and eventually, it’ll be worth your while haha.
nice new Saturday upload🎉🎉. Missed you at Doheny buses at the beach. There was a great turn out
thanks Joe! yeah, these next few weeks, i'm taking a deep dive into working on the square so I can get it back up and running ASAP. I've got a few videos-worth of content I have to edit as well so I won't really be outdoors anytime soon haha
What year is your tacoma?
It’s a 2020. But this will the the same for all 3rd gen 4x4 Tacomas, 2016-2023
Orange trick is a Mexican model.
Yep! I figured it was something out of the US. We don’t get any cool cars haha
Hormiga- The working ant!
More one... Thanks for the video, Jeremy
. Nice and again now I can do mine. Thanks for the video. ✌🏼
22:59 you can see my truck in the parking lot. lol
white, black, grays, or silver? haha
@@jeremydoc it's the gray truck next to the white car that's next to the silver SUV that's next to the gray SUV. 😁 oddly enough there is a blue Mustang in there.
Great video sorry I didn’t drive my 67🔳. ✌🏼
Nice job. Welding and grinding on any gas tank is dangerous. You should have mentioned this plus had a fire extinguisher handy.
You’re right, bud! I should have.
Gteat detailed video, i like how you show your mistakes, it makes it more real. Those oil pump nuts are too deep as the nylon is not locked onto the thread. So 1 year on, how did it run?
Beauty
I’m so jealous. Makes me want to build another aircooled!!
Dope.
1st
Hey, you got a similar ride to mine. The two differences being, mine's a 61 and yours is nowhere near as rusty as mine. Thanks for everything you're doing bud. Cause of this I might just make it through this colossal pain in the ass of a promise bound passion project.
Hey bro what’s the process of replacing your add cuz I know you have to drain the oil out but What’s the torq spec for the bolts to get it back on and how much oil do I use and where do I put it and is there anything else liquid or stuff like that that I will have to add back in after doing this?
I found one other video on removing my cooling fan. My fan is now bent up. Your video shows a much better way. Glad I have another fan.
Glad it helped, buddy!
I have to find a fix for my truck. It has ADHD 😊
Ritalin lol
Great knowledge here... please use fuel hose or silicon hose instead of soaker hose from lowes
Yes sir! Updated it in my video description as well
It's amazing the number of VWs you see with clean, fresh bodies and interiors but the same old rusty ragged out engine and transmission they've always had. I like this take much better, focus on the mechanicals first!
This was 100% my approach when starting this project several years ago. Gotta make it run/drive first before I make it look pretty. No use in a good looking car that rides like junk, or not run at all haha
I was about your age when I did up a 59 sedan. Fun times. Oh you could have simply squirted some silicone sealant over the two bolts.
If you look on the inside of the wheels it should say the size. I don’t know if there are old and new rivieras but there are fake and real ones and that might be the difference. Also, a smaller tire in rear might give the clearance you need.
If not you could raise it up a notch
