The Sony Alpha 1 II | The Perfect Wildlife Camera - Field Test
What a huge honour to be amongst the first to use this beast of a camera out in the field. On the surface, the camera looks and feels pretty familiar, with the edition of the 4-axis multi-angle LCD Monitor, larger viewfinder eye cup and ergonomics just like the Alpha 9 III.
On the inside, the technology has been taken up a whole new level especially when it comes to tracking your subject. The snappy autofocus along with the AI subject recognition is beyond phenomenal - It literally sticks on your subject whether it’s moving sideways, forwards, backwards, through bushes and foliage, and even through dust. This sequence here is a testament to Sony hearing our wants and needs when it comes to...

Welcome to my RUclips channel! I'm thrilled to share my stories and adventures with all of you right here on this channel. I'll be covering everything from travel, lifestyle and wildlife :) Shot on Sony Music : www.epidemicsound.com Instagram: lifewithdan
This is incredible! I have no idea why you don’t have millions of views and subscribers. Also how did the 200-600mm perform. I heard from a few people that it isn’t the best lens for African safari because the minimal focal length is 200mm. Instead they suggested I look at sigma 60-600. But I still went with 200-600 because I think sony lens has better and faster autofocus and they are also compatible with teleconverter. What’s your opinion?
@@syedinamuddin6703 Thank you for the kind words! It has been my go-to lens whenever I’m out in the field. I would say it’s a pretty effective range to nail all the angles you need (especially if you wanna get that exaggerated compression of the sun with your subjects) - though if you can afford a 100-400GM and have only one camera body, I would recommend that lens instead. Ultimately I would prefer to use Sony lenses for the compatibility and reliable autofocus 💯
broooooooo
super good! Where do you find the perfect music?
@@filmmark Thank you! I spend a lot of time searching on epidemicsound and artlist!
This was insane! Bravo 👏👏👏
@@filmmark Thank you!!
*Super video. What is the name of the music at minute **2:40** Thanks*
Hello, thank you for your video. I know that in the first version of the Sony A1, the continuous shooting speed with third-party lenses was limited to 15 FPS when using the electronic shutter. Does this limitation still exist in the Sony A1 Mark II? Can we achieve 30 FPS with new-generation Sigma lenses like the Sigma 60-600mm DG DN OS Sports, or are we still restricted to 15 FPS? Thanks
I noticed you're using AWB. What about ISO? Have you set it manually? I have two A1 II camera bodies, and at the beginning of February, I’m heading to Kenya to test them in real-world situations. Could you please share more details about your camera settings?
@@vlastimilvajnorak6024 Yes I do use AWB at times. It really depends on the situation - I would use shade during sunrise and sunset. And if I would be panning in an environment with varying colours in the environment I would not use AWB. As for ISO for video I’ll set it at its native ISO - I’ll always use the best ISO possible to get the highest quality unless the situation calls for it. For photography, don’t worry too much about ISO, use the best lowest and best ISO range if possible but most importantly it’s about capturing the moment. If you have to go higher to capture the moment, go for it! At the end of the days it’s always about the moment and not the technicalities of the shot. You’re going to have the best time in Kenya💯💯
2:11 -> That ain't a 100-400mm here 😂 Did you also shoot with the 300mm? Or maybe those shots were taken separately, but if that's the case I guess there's a small story-telling mistake, hehe, should have put the 100-400 on 😇 Other than that, perfect video ! 👍
Hahah yes good spot! I was using the 300mm purely for the hero broll shots of myself. It was my B-cam lens for photos! :)) Thank you for the compliment!🎉
👏
Incredible !!!
Thank you!!
Unbelievable 🙌🙌
Thank you!! :))
salute to you cameraman
@@victor_6077 Thank you!!
Amazing! Which camera would you recommend the A1 or A7CR ?
@@contentm3893 Thank you! That really depends on your budget and the scope of what you’re planning to use the camera for. If you plan to do it professionally and intensively, I would say go for the A1 for that extra level of extra speed, 4K 120fps, better weathersealing(I used both cameras under intense dusty conditions in the field and the A1 handled it like a champ), dual card slot and handling of the camera. If you don’t have that extra budget, I would say the A7CR will do just fine. You’ll still be able to nail every shot you’d like to in the field when it comes to wildlife, landscapes or lifestyle content. Annnd, with the release of the new A1 mk ii, I think you’ll be able to grab a second hand A1 at a good rate right if you search hard enough. So I vote A1!
nice nice
@@PINKGOFFICIAL Thanks man!!
This is beautiful. Are any of these shots on a tripod or were they all handheld?? Were you using the 100-400 for the majority of the footage?
@@itsryanwilkes Thanks man!! Yas all the footage was shot completely handheld with the 100-400mm! And of course with the help of some post stabilisation to get it extra stable 🙌
you just earned a sub! absolutely insane visuals
@@JohnnyFoster-si7ek Thanks man!!💯 really appreciate it!
Wow Dan...the kind of moments captured are surreal....more than the camera this video shows the talent behind the camera...awesome footage...
@@Durga_Garapati Hey thank you so much 🙌 that means a lot!! 💯💯
superb videography! thanks for once again proving that its the photographer who makes images, and not the camera. double thanks for a 'practical' in-field demonstration of talent, compared to the 'theoretical' spec-sheet based reviews from people sitting in studios and saying how this body is underwhelming or nothing more than a 'firmware update' of sorts.
@@mks0 Thank you so much, I really appreciate it 🙌 That’s exactly what I had in mind - to showcase exactly what you can achieve with the camera out in the field 💯
Imagine just how much better this would have been with Nikon Z glass and bodies. Nice try, though. You did the best you could with what you had.
$6500 for essentially the same hardware..
Incredible video. Great talent. Very underrated channel. Great job!

that was awesome
@@mikejennings7897 Thank you!!
Very impressive! Thanks for taking the time to share the footage. What was your goto lens or lenses?
Hey thank you! For wildlife definitely the 200-600 or the 100-400. For the smaller subjects I’d use the 90mm macro :) For everyday shooting, the 24-70 F2.8 literally stays on my A1 ever since I got it early this year. Before that I was always shooting with either the 20mm f1.8 or a 35mm 1.4
Wow. I don't know what else to say. Just, WOW! Very impressive work. The light, the compositions, the action, the timing, the positioning. Even the editing and music were extremely well done. As others have said, this is work worthy of National Geographic or similar. And absolutely should be used by Sony for marketing! (I will never do work at that level. Even so, my A1 II is on order. Trading in my a9III and my a7r5. I do mostly landscapes and some youth soccer and wildlife. But no where near what you are doing here.) I sold my 100-400 for the 70-200 II w/ extenders when it came out. But if they bring out a new 100-400 with similar improvements in weight, size and features then I may go back to the 100-400. But for right now, I'll be focusing on getting and setting up the A1 II.
Thank you for the compliments, I really appreciate it :))) I put a lot of thought into every little element of design and art to create the experience, thank you for noticing that 🎉 It's literally a combination of the 2 cameras you sold along with crazy video/low-light capabilities. You're going to have the best time with your new camera. I can't wait to receive my unit too. Same here, I'm hoping for a new 100-400 to come along, its the perfect lens!
how did you film those venomous snakes
All of the snakes featured except one are constrictors and non-venomous. There was an expert on site with me to assist with the filming, ensuring that the snakes were comfortable at all times when we were filming it. Instagram: @marcoscarello
Sony is the King of cameras
I fully agree :))) It just simply works and nails whatever you need it to do!
@@lifewithdanng it's always criticized for its color science but in all technicalities, it is the best camera brand for everyone. learning to color grade gets you out of your comfort zone and it's an awesome skill to learn
Very interesting - also shows top-end cameras video AF still struggle a little bit with keeping the subject in focus with live tracking - wonder if this is due to lens lag more than the camera algo?
I feel that the AF on the A1 II has a HUGE upgrade compared to the the A1 (I was using the A1 as a B cam and the A1's AF loses focus whenever my subject moves towards me, while the A1 II locks on fully and literally sticks on to the subject no matter where it moves in the frame) During the 10 days when I was testing it out in the field - whenever I missed a shot or if the AF took a split second longer to focus, it was due to a user error as I was shooting fully handheld or it was due to the vehicle engine vibration as it wasn't at a full halt.
Great video and photography. Is it possible to take pictures when shooting videos at the same time with this camera? Kind regards
@@leoven99 Thank you!! Not possible yet but hopefully they come up with a software that allows that. Right now I’m switching the photo/video dial on the fly to capture both video and photo at the same time. But when doing that, there’s a chance you might miss moments. The best way I tackle this is to preset your custom menus to have the right settings in both video and photo so there won’t be any fumbling when it comes to switching.
Epic footage and editing! How do you get and keep focus on the leopard when it’s behind the grass? Manual?
Thank you so much! Yes I do manual focus whenever the situation calls for it (especially when the subjects are not in a clear open scenario) What I do to make it really convenient (especially when panning with your subject as it moves in an open area to e.g a bush) is to customize the button on my lens to switch to autofocus or manual focus which allows me to react on the fly to not miss a shot.
Absolutely astonishing!! I’d love to see a behind the scenes/tutorial. Where was this? Seems like it would’ve taken a whole crew years to gather this footage!
Thank you! I'll try and piece together a BTS for future videos! This was all taken in Maasai Mara in a span of 10 days in the first half of November 2024 :)
Breathtaking 💥
Thank you!!
Dude, what a great job showing g us what the camera can actually do. I’m frustrated seeing all the videos of people almost yelling for attention. You video has no words but it’s worth a thousand. The only thing I I think it’s missing is sharing some raw photos so that users can play with them without nice LR updates and see how Dynamic Range behaves.
Thank you so much! I really really appreciate that 🙌That is really the ultimate goal of the video, showcasing exactly what the camera can achieve and do out there in a real world scenario 💯 Alright I'll take note and work on it for future videos :))
Just wow! You're crazy!
Thank you!!
I wish this video gets atleast 1 million views!
Hehehe thank you!! Let's get there! :))
