Magicland Dizzy - Classic Edition + (2024) Speedrun (13:17)
A speedrun of Magicland Dizzy Classic Edition + v1.1 for ZX Spectrum
This is a revision of Magicland Dizzy by Dr. Titus who has also made Extended and Classic editions of the first 3 games in the Dizzy series.
There are no major changes if you play the game as you remember but Titus has added a use for some of the junk items which allows Dizzy to save another member of the Yolkfolk and get a brand new power up enabling completion much faster than normal. But he also patched out all the fun glitches :( so all the yolkfolk need to be rescued.
This run was fine I guess. Volcano luck was bad, the rat boost failed but it wasn't too sloppy. Enjoy.

Played on Fuse 1.6 Emulator Speedrun of Treasure island Dizzy for ZX Spectrum. World Record on publication. After running the new released versions of Treasure Island Dizzy I went back to the original game and improved my time. I have taken over 30 seconds off my time just from playing better. The route is essentially the same but a couple of minor optimisations in inventory management.

*Edit* this is the maximum score if you do not use tricks that allow dizzy to fall out of bounds. Using glitches I have been able to score 146100. which is 8000 more than this video.       Previous record was 18:39. I have already got my best time down to 13:07 and am trying for sub 13. Going through the rat is difficult but it saves 7 seconds if you get it and costs nothing if you fail. It is about 50/50 whether I get it.

    Очень нетривиальный ход - сделать упор на устранении Зака, не спасая родственников Диззи. Ну а достичь этого получилось с помощью фирменного хождения сквозь полы экранов. А в этом видео - уже и сквозь стены. Знание таких игровых тонкостей и их чёткое претворение в жизнь должно быть вознаграждено овациями стоя! Но я всё же надеюсь, что это предел совершенства, так как немного обидно за игру, на прохождение которой 25 лет назад я тратил 1,5-2,5 часа. И было приятно играть всё это время. А тут такое... Но если автор собирается улучшать и дальше прохождение этой и других игр серии - это всё равно будет неплохо, так как мне также приятно и то, что Диззи занимаются до сих пор. Желаю успехов!

      1,5 - 2,5 часа это уже итоговый результат, как я понимаю? Вспоминаю свои Диззи - на большинство из них уходили недели, если не месяцы игры. Постепенно, без мануалов и бессмертия, открывая локацию за локацией, вечерами или когда получится - но это был реально длительный игровой процесс и получение удовольствия от него. Вперемешку с другими играми, естественно. Кстати в данном случае, никаких обид нет и не может быть :) Это уже как спортивная дисциплина, причём придающая новый смысл всей игре. Пройти мы все её так или иначе прошли, а вот устанавливать такие рекорды, оптимизируя геймплей, оттачивая точность передвижений и управление, используя неочевидные фишки и даже глюки - это уже искусство 👍

      @@user-hd5bz5jj3v Да, конечно, поначалу совсем не так быстро! Впервые играя в неё в 96-м я не мог пройти дальше тролля на мосту (при том, что описание игры у меня было), потом не мог понять, как в ледяном замке подняться наверх - к Заку и к шахматной доске: ведь видимого прохода там не было! А сразу догадаться не получилось. Как итог, в том году игру я не прошёл. А потом неудачно нажал кнопку записи как раз в начале загрузки программы: всего несколько мгновений, пока я опомнился, но этого хватило... Другой копии игры не было, поэтому четвёртую часть я прошёл уже только спустя несколько лет (в 2000-м, кажется. Тогда-то прохождение уже занимало те самые пару часов). В конце-концов тогда игру нужно было ещё и загрузить. А учитывая возможные сложности с этим и гораздо большее время на их запуск, чем сейчас, можно понять и другое к ним отношение тогда. Как минимум, гораздо более внимательное и осторожное: чего бы лишнего не утворить, чтобы игра не слетела и не пришлось загружать по новой. Сейчас отношение к таким играм гораздо более спокойное, так как много больше возможностей по обращению с ними (и извращений с ними)). Но на самом деле я не обижаюсь, если что. Поэтому и смотрю такие видео с удовольствием, так как сам уже не играю. И приятно видеть, что другим это до сих пор интересно.

      @@SaintIerovoam-kc4uh недавно говорил с приятелем - у него дома до сих пор реальный (железный, а не эмулятор на ПК) Спектрум. Сейчас вроде доделывает к нему дисковод с поддержкой SD карт, вроде так это называется. Но что ещё интересней, буквально месяц назад узнал, что в Англии официально (!) было выпущено продолжение линейки компьютеров ZX - Spectrum Next. Причём в разработке принимали участие люди, которые приложили руку к компьютеру ещё в 1982-м году. И даже дизайнер корпуса и клавиатуры что у оригинального Спектрума, что у Next один и тот же человек. К сожалению, не так давно он умер. Ну а для меня Диззи начался с третьей части году в 1991-м. Никаких инструкций, всё сам, помогло любопытство, терпение и знание английского. Потом были первая и вторая часть, а далее в хронологическом порядке. Самой красивой по графике - с невероятным пламенем факелов и шикарной анимацией воды - была шестая часть. Потом ещё и спин-офф в виде Сеймура от той же студии, там геймплей аналогичный, отличается только главный персонаж. Ну а российские версии мне не зашли, ни по задумке, ни даже по графике. Да и Спектрум был отложен в дальнюю коробку, хотя на эмуляторе ZX32 нет-нет, да и запускал что-нибудь старенькое.

    Really impressive! But how did you manage to pass the dragon in the beginning, while he was breathing with fire? 🤔

      The dragon has static RNG from when the game is first loaded. So every time you do a hard reset the dragon will fire the same way and the head will move the same way. Simply holding right allows Dizzy to pass.

      Crash was a UK gaming magazine for the ZX Spectrum and 93% was their review score. Anything scoring over 90% was called a Crash Smash!

    Just discovered this extended version of the game and recently completed it (slowly!) It's very nicely done but the new puzzles are not really guessable. I had to watch a walkthrough to figure out what to do. I assume it's no longer possible to use the dry ice next to the Leprechaun's wig right? Any idea what Mr Gek and Mr Chuck refers to? I think the keys for the two prisoners can be used interchangeably... Very impressive run! I think you have found an optimal route. I'm surprised you are no longer able to do any OOBS! They really tightened up the bugs it seems!

    WOW! Under twelve minutes! That is crazy! 1:14 did you just DIE to get across the screen quicker! Genius! The shortcut at 6:43 is awesome! I'm confused by the total time though - the game may not end until 11:38, but Zaks dies at 11:02 and it says "Congratulations". Isn't that the end?

      The death at 1:14 isn't just to get across the screen. The main glitch abuse in this game is that when Dizzy dies he goes back to the position where he entered the screen AND then you can jump immediately when you respawn so the death allows Dizzy to get extra height to get up to the platform on the previous screen. The timing ends when the game stops. Dizzy can still die! So you need to wait for the victory fanfare to signal that you have beaten the game. You can also do extra stuff after killing Zaks. In 2 other categories All Eggs and Total Destruction my runs finish the extra objectives after beating Zaks.

    Hi Faddy. This was a great speedrun to watch. I've just managed to get my Drawbridge drive to allow me to play my old Amiga floppys on the emulator. (I know, not really necessary but i can play all the old demo disks i've got laying around now) anyway, i was thinking of having a go at speedrunning the Amiga version of Dizzy, it doesn't look like anyone else is running it though and i was wondering if you had any hints or tips i might be able to pick your brains for. I already know Amiga runs a lot slower than the zx did so the optimal time is going to be nowhere near the zx time. I guess the rest is just going to be experimenting to see what works.

      I have run the Amiga version of Magicland on emulator. I used FS-UAE and emulated an Amiga 500. The games on Amiga are completely different to the Spectrum. Amiga games can be compared to DOS or Atari ST times because they are all basically the same game as far as we know. We have Spectrum and CPC on the same board, and Commodore 64 on its own. Yolkfolk.com has all the games officially available for download. There might be info about tricks and glitches on their forums but I don't know too much about these versions. All I know is my one Amiga video got way more views than my Spectrum runs so there is a least a small audience who wants amiga dizzy content. Do a run and put it up, don't worry about it being perfect.

    Nice run. In addition to the version of the emulator should also specify the version of the game, so there is no confusion. Many bugs in the latest versions are fixed and some skips can no longer be performed.

      I think there is only version 1.1 for the Classic verison on the main thread of ZX-PK and Yolkfolk But I assume there will be updates like for the Extended Version that remove the fun tricks. I'll put version numbers into those descriptions.

    Amazing run. The sea creatures weren't very nice to you though. The timing has to be perfect. Can't be helped sometimes. You're eating away at your time with each run. Awesome.

      The sea creatures are exactly the same every run. They always start in the same place and only move when on screen so I know when I have to wait. I might look into beating the little green fish on the way back with the axe. And possibly beating the purple stingray but that screen is time limited by the bubble spawns so that may not even matter.

    Pretty flawless run. As many times as I've played and watched speedruns, I've never noticed the score before. The extra screens really do fit in well with the game too. I might even give this a try myself.

      no problem. Sorry to use you as a go between but Titus asks on zx-pk why I did not clip out the grave in this run. The answer is because you can't clip out the grave in this version. The attribute of the tile above the coin has been changed. Titus must have made the changes when removing the interaction with the pick axe. imgur.com/q3Fg6eY The red overlap with Dizzy is different in all versions of the game. The Classic Edition is the cleanest version.

    It is possible to go through the extended version more quickly. For example, in the Joker puzzle, you don't have to touch the 'three', 'seven', 'ace' or 'queen of spades' cards. You just have to enter the corridor where the card is, and you can walk back out.

      Thanks! I do read the dizzy threads on zx-pk with google translate. So I saw this comment there. I think I tested that when I was playing the game but I must have made a mistake and failed the puzzle. So I assumed had to Dizzy touch the card. Around 14 seconds lost. :(

    It was both strange and fascinating to see new screens in Treasure island Dizzy after 32 years. I remember jumping out of my skin the first time I saw the lightning strike me. That takes me back. That was a good run. Very well executed and near flawless.

    That was pretty amazing. Congrats. Especially getting under the well. Made me chuckle. You know this game inside out, which is never an easy thing to do with any game. Despite having such amazing games to play these days, I always find myself going back to the Dizzy games. Great run. Well done, I enjoyed that.

    This is a beta version, the first release of the game with many bugs. In the official final version (1.5) there is no auto-collection of coins. It turns out that all speedruns are cheating.

      1.0 version, officially released on Yolkfolk dot com. It was even promoted by the Oliver Brothers. 😜 I know there is fristration on your part that glitches exist in the published game but that is part of the fun of speedrunning, to find the things a developer has overlooked or not intended to included. (The mushroom glitch in your Crystal Kingdom Remake is a very fun glitch) I personally think the coin collecting text is a bad design decision. The coins in this game are closer to the Stars in The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy. There are so many of them. There is one screen with 5 coins, to see the text appear 5 times in such a short period ruins the flow of the game imo. More coins than screens, never seen before on Spectrum Dizzy.

      ​@@faddy91 Unfortunately, the Oliver Twins gave us an unwarranted time pressure. They had a desire to release the game a week before Christmas, which did not allow enough time for deep testing. Otherwise, they wanted to release an unfinished dev release without a final cut scene. Later, under quiet conditions, testing was carried out and a lot of fixes were made. I do not recommend using version 1.0 for speedruns. As for CKD 2017, I think a redux version will be released in the future. The plot will be closer to the original according to the letters from the past from The Oliver Twins to the Codemasters devs.

    Interesting. I am wondering why you keep filling your inventory where it seems better to drop something straight after use (power pill comes to mind). Is it a menu speed thing

      Opening the menu to drop things costs time where as i get to drop it with no time loss just by picking up other items I need. For the same reason i carry the cat to the well. I have to open the menu to use the handle so I can reduce the number of menus by re-collecting the cat at the same time.

      @@faddy91 makes some sense. i do get the impression that there's menu saves to be made though but i'd have to try doing a speedrun of it to confirm that. also: how do you do those warp strats and do you think they are applicable to either CPC or C64 version? (i know C64 version was different coder but it's a vague possibility some stuff will work anyway)

      @@JJXB2004 To wrap you have to be walking between vertical screens on stairs. There are 4 locations in the game. Above Dylan, above Dozy and above Excalibur plus the stair in the castle I use. Simply open the menu as you transition the screen and you can drop an item to erase the ground. Hold the button when closing the menu and you can drop more items. If you get the right timing Dizzy will move up or down screens. As for menuing, anything you think is unnecessary is probably setting up a trick.

    I dislike this soundtrack. Disappointing, coming from Lyndon Sharp. I'd much rather have one lengthy good track than a handful of short repetitive jingles. Looks like the game has cool movement for a Dizzy game, though, and I like the incorporation of Dizzy characters in the Alice in Wonderland story. Nice run!

      I never notice the soundtrack because i usually do runs with the sound isolated for recording purposes so I can listen to something else.
