Rust Revival Garage
США
Добавлен 29 июн 2011
Welcome to the garage as I try to revive my 68 Pontiac LeMans, restore my rust bucket 85 Chevy C10, and update a 78 Yamaha XS1100 and Jeep TJ Wrangler. And occasionally fix any problems with my daughter’s Acura RDX. I'm no mechanic, but join me on my adventures as I learn how to do what I love... working on cars and motorcycles.

Power Tour Repairs on my '85 Squarebody!
Got a 67 Buick gs and this helps. Thanks.
Awesome! That's why I made it. Needed something like it :)
Thank you very much, your video came as one of the firsts and your solution was spot on. Glad to fix this problem with $20 and 10 minutes of work.
Glad it helped!
So after a while, was this actually the fix? I have the same noise coming out of my 08 rdx.
Oh yeah. I haven’t heard a thing since and my youngest is driving it now.
I have found that if one buys the ---- one gallon can of WD-40 ---- and a plastic spray bottle works best ----- a lot of spray cans are wasted ----- On the crankshaft the pin as you say is called a ---- woodruff key ------ and the slot / groove in the harmonic balancer is called a ---- keyway ------ Thank You sharing with us this video ------ hope to see more from you -------- enjoy the Pontiacs ---- and with that I subscribed to your channel ------- Hope you have a Good Week ------- Rodney
Thanks, Rodney!
👍🏻 working on getting my Pontiac engine replaced. Why don’t you like the fuel filter before the pump? I just installed a filter there, seems like a good place
Mostly because the fuel pump has to pull thru the filter, after pulling from the tank. And I've seen a lot of folks put them after.
Dash pad and cluster look great! 👍🏻
Thanks! Not happy I couldn't fix the tears very well. But I'll survive :)
Is the 400 the same ?
Yep
there's a video on here where a guy coats the underbelly with an oil, I watched it the other day, and he showed that it worked, even when driven in snow and salt Here's the title of the video: Lanolin Undercoating vs Untreated After 7 Years: The ULTIMATE PROOF Lanolin Undercoating Works! and they make a can of that rust reformer you can use with a paintbrush or squirter
I'll check it out - I need to do something to protect the rest of the frame
I think a total frame replacement might have been the better option.
Probably. But I’m not off-roading it, drive maybe 1500 miles a year, and I need to be able to drive it now.
@@Rustrevivalgarage that's what I was thinking, with used car prices like they are (at least out here in california) repairs make more sense... you can get a good frame at a junk yard and swap everything over, then you can try that lanolin underbody coating oil maybe
do not paint it, oil it
Not a bad idea at all
check out this video I saw the other day about the using lanolin oil... Here's the title of the video: Lanolin Undercoating vs Untreated After 7 Years: The ULTIMATE PROOF Lanolin Undercoating Works! and they make a can of that rust reformer you can use with a paintbrush or squirter
Damn, skid plates killing frames. Ray Charles approves them welds, tight areas suck!
Damn Jeeps
TJ's just rust no matter what due to the way the frame drains, I think a certain range of years for the TJ rust more than others
This is not a problem brother cut the old and Weld in the new
Managed to get it taken care of. Damn Jeeps 😂
you should look into kbs coatings tim its a bit cheaper than por and ive had better results.
@@jeffreyrigged I used their paint on the Pontiac 350 engine. I’m still chugging through the Por15 stuff because I have it on hand.
@Rustrevivalgarage yeah id definitely use it up if had it. I remember you did now. My memory sucks.
what is that hose on the rear on tank? i just bought a standard tank for my special and that nipple is in the way i cant put the seat back on
I always thought that this hose was a vent line that runs down through the frame in case it needs to vent fuel.
@@Rustrevivalgarage yup it is. figured it out. bent it a little and bent the seat a little and fits great
Bet it runs way better!
She’s much happier but I still have to get it on the road. Clayton’s doing some welding for me later today 😅
Great job brother I painted the floor to my 67 Firebird nearly 22 years ago and she still looks brand new
Thanks. Yeah luckily it was in really good shape except for a few spots. But I’m happy with the results!
Did it work?
Didn’t get a chance to find out. Had an electrical fire with the positive cable and decided to pull the engine and clean it up and re-do the wiring. Going to check soon though!
You can use a heat gun to help relax and flatten the tight corners
Good to know. I wasn't sure if the heat would affect the carpet, too.
You might think about making new ground wires for your head lights and anyplace else you have ground wires. Copper will corrode over time and those 55 plus year old ground wires probably have corrosion in them. I would hate for you to have problems with your wiring because you didn't replace your ground wires. Otherwise, great job and good luck! I will be doing a Painless kit on a 55 Belair soon, so I will be watching closely.
Yeah I learned a lot from doing the entire car, front to back. So now I gotta go back up front again 😂 I already rewired my dimmer switch as I was installing new carpet
Looks great! Thats a lot of work. 👍🏻
Thanks! Yeah, there was a lot going on but managed to get it to all come together!
exhaust holes got mine on my 72 buick. I got to replace that just on pass side.
you should have a extra belt and receiver for a bench car. Also some of the 3 point cars had 2 receivers for the upper and lower belt i think.
A buddy told me it was probably for a bench seat, and they must've only put in 2 on the outside once they knew it wouldn't be a bench seat. But... now I have extra receivers :)
@Rustrevivalgarage they expensive so definitely a plus
Another great video sir! Keep it up!!!
Thank you! Yeah, scary to make cuts on fresh carpet but I think I pulled it off lol
Apparently painless no longer offers the that nice looking book your using for the rewiring all they sent me was a pdf 😢😢
Interesting. It might also depend on the kit you get? Not sure which one you have. I bought the Painless Performance 10102 Harness with 21 Circuits. And that one did come with the book.
Re-wiring my 70GranSport soon… Im glad I found this! Thanks!
There are more videos! Completed the entire car and I’m about to test it out and troubleshoot next
Where did you get the book you are using for a reference?
Painless provides a great book to help you in every kit. I would have been lost without it.
One thing Sir....if the new wheels are a larger diameter it will cause issues with the speedo not reading correctly...might be worth looking into to prevent tickets...other than that, they look great, change the car a lot, and youre right...gettng decent stuff off Marketplace requires perfect timing and a seller thats not an ass
Yep! The affect wasn't terrible at lower speeds and both my daughters, who share the car, hate the highways. And they're like their dad - they don't drive too fast (too often) but they accelerate very fast.
I buy and sell everything there
@@CruisinWithKevin I’ve had some luck but it’s hard to find what you’re looking for in my area sometimes. I’m constantly looking. And I’ve got to be fast.
@ where you from?
@@CruisinWithKevin Columbus, OH
Where did you purchase the extra bag of terminals? I’ve been looking for some of the big head light terminals because I messed some up doing practice crimps
Oh, I messed up so many. I may even go back and do some of the ones from earlier! Got them on Amazon - these are the larger ones: www.amazon.com/dp/B00B460HHK and these are the smaller/regular ones: www.amazon.com/dp/B00A8X35QU
Looking good! Cant wait to see it on the street.
Thanks! Lotsa work to do to get it ready, but I’m one step closer
Good video really helped me get the cluster out of my 68 tempest
Glad it helped!
about to do the same
@@dustinpopovich6664 Good luck!
Sounds amazing man is this the stock cam from blueprint? I am buying one tomorrow and also how is the reliability and performance?
Everything is stock, but of course I've got a unique set-up with headers, exhaust, etc. And I've had a few issues (had to replace the intake gaskets, but they sent them to me) but it's been great overall
@ perfect thanks I’m playing on running hooker headers 3 inch exhaust and flowmaster super 10 hope to have the same amount of chop as you thanks again
I would have sprayed some soapy water on the tires and rims to see if there were any immediate leaks.
Great idea! Thanks
A tube tire if it was flat it will be flat again , the strap way is not needed at all because is not a tubeless wheel. I don't know man , just saying
All I know is... it wouldn't air up without the strap and did with it. So, it worked. Recorded it 2 weeks ago and just checked - still has full tires.
Cowl is a bad design should be a scoop or side vent lol
I agree. I'm always parked under a tree and I'm pulling crap out of that all the time.
Doesn't the fact that the stem was flopping around in the rim hole indicate it had a tube in it?
Ha! Probably! But it would not inflate so I did what I could to save a few bucks
That is exactly what it means.
I’m at the same point in my wiring replacement. And still waiting on parts…
I know the feeling! Well, keep following along, if you can. I finally finished the rewiring project and all videos are up (except testing everything and troubleshooting any problems!) Thanks for watching
And the rewiring is DONE!!!!
@@ArrowheadGarage Yes! Learned a lot and hopefully I don’t burn the car down…
regular ol bob villa
lol yep... that's me. Carpentry I've been doing a while. Still learning the car stuff!
@Rustrevivalgarage I've done carpentry and such since I was a little kid. Not professionally educated in either. You learn to do things yourself when you are a poor kid in southeastern ky.
@@jeffreyrigged I hear ya. And there's nothing better than looking at the finished product and saying "I did that" instead of paying someone else to do it.
@Rustrevivalgarage something I've tried to explain to my son. Hopefully he gets there one day.
I use the same pens on my 77 Impala face of the dash and they work great
I do like how it turned out - just wish I was better at drawing straight, even lines! lol
You can polish up the old plastic with a fine rubbing compound. I would take the gauges out for that. You can polish up both the inside and outside if you take it all apart and it will look like new.
Thanks! I’ll check it out and give it a try. But I’m not sure I trust myself to take the gauges apart 😂
30 years ago I bought a brand new Mallory distributor stem and installed it with the vacuum advance on the right side. The engine ran fine the whole time but I was just frustrated at the amount of room I didn't have for adjustment having the vacuum advance on that side. I just discovered your video back in them days RUclips didn't exist. And before I looked at your video, I was thinking as long as the rotor is pointing at the same position on the cap, what's the difference? Anyway, thanks for the video. You're a big help
Cool! And yeah just recently I put it in the opposite way you’re supposed to. Just wanted the extra room to adjust timing. And it’s not hitting anything so we’ll see how it goes! Thanks for watching!
Just started checking out your videos. What's the current status of this engine? Are you rebuilding it or is it still disassembled?
I refreshed the original 350 that was in my 68 Lemans. But this 400 is still disassembled because it’ll go to the machine shop for inspection, cleaning and boring… then I’ll rebuild with all new Butler parts. But that’s going to cost a lot. So I got the 350 going and I’m rewiring the car now. That’s were all the money has gone 😂
@@Rustrevivalgarage "That’s were all the money has gone" Lol. That's what I'm starting to experience with my first '69 firebird. Threw a rod the other day so trying to see what options are out there to get it running again. I would go with Butler but that would definitely put a dent in the wallet.
Great job brother looks brand new
Thanks! As long as you don't get too close... it's perfect! lol
And... happy birthday, brother!
@Rustrevivalgarage Thanks brother
68 Firebird 350. Yep! This had me stumped! I noticed when checking TDC the rotor was spinning counterclockwise - WHAT- Reality is stranger than fiction. Thanks for do the research proving Im not crazy

i think it looks great. They do make a film thats chrome might be a cheap fix for that side.
Good to know! Yeah, I'd be worried about trying to spray paint it and have it look weird
@Rustrevivalgarage it's like a vinyl wrap. Never used but I'd imagine if looks bad peel off.
Looks great! I love these pens. I also use them for my model car hobby.
Yeah, I was surprised by how well they did work... once I got the hang of it
Nice, fantastic detail! 👍🏻
Thanks!
i recommend a retro sound unit over the hidden unit. I have one in my 72 and its a great set up and looks oem. Another option there is a marine unit thats just a hidden box and remote. I have that for my 66 and just got a delete panel from a special so it looks like no radio.
I've got a head unit in my Jeep that starts playing music from my phone as soon as I start it up. Don't have to touch anything. And it's only $100. I even control the volume with my phone. I may change and upgrade down the road, but most of my money is going back into the car itself. And the retro radios start at $300 and go up.
