Astrophotography Adventure in Flagstaff's Cool Night Sky
I shot Sh2-129, the Flying Bat Nebula, and OU4, the Squid Nebula, from just south of Flagstaff, Arizona. The night was cool, and I got a neat shot of these nebulae. However, I need about twice as much integration time to really get the shot I want . . . but it is a great start!

Astrophotography Planning. . . What to Shoot!
Просмотров 4683 месяца назад
I used to go out to a dark site, set up, and then try to figure out what I was going to shoot that evening. Scrambling, I often played wack-a-mole as I went from DSO to DSO. Now, I am doing serious planning, exploring various DSOs, checking framing, matching them to my telescopes and cameras, and keeping a master list of objects to shoot. I then plan out my year, so I have DSOs selected for eac...

Great video. Best view of Horsehead I have seen. Lots of detail. One question I have is with the auto focuser you have. How is it programmed to keep the proper focus through the night as the ambient temperature is changing. Does it check the focus when the temperature changes a degree or so or is it on a timer?

Interesting video … I’m not sure that old one even makes a good visual focuser. How do you think this new one would work for visual use? The knobs look like gear teeth - are they comfortable? And is there any backlash? Seems attractive to retain the tilt mechanism and original base.

Great Video, having that set in North instead of Auto will mean it will only send corrections on DEC in one direction, so normally for that to work well you need a bit of misalignment, so it only needs pulses in the north direction, normally you would have that set in Auto, that would be the correct setting really….

Nice! I was hoping to capture the bat and squid at a star party last weekend in August, but was positioned too close to the tree line. A couple of others were trying to image the squid and bat as well, but weren't having much luck with it. It's not an easy target. I think those images turned out well! Check your focal length settings in PHD2 - you need to enter your focal length in order to show the measurements in arcseconds. Clear skies!

I already watched your video about a year ago already. But I did not comment. I just watched the video again. I have an 8" RC and I love it. Unfortunately I am also struggeling with the collimation but I usually get it to an ok collimation. As a camera I also have a 3.76 pixel size camera which is a bit too small. So I am thinking about to afford a 294 monochrome camera that I can make use of the 4.6 pixel size with the RC8 and the 2.8 pixel size with my shorter focal length telescopes. As you have mentioned that you were very familiar with collimation of Newtonian telescopes and that they are easy to collimate I need to say that I have less problems getting my RC to an ok-ish collimation compared to my Newtonian telescope. Greetings from Germany and Clear skies to you Dave!

Dave, greetings from NZ. Thoroughly enjoyed your video - you have clearly demonstrated a methodology that is very worthy of following. Being based well placed into the Southern Hemisphere I find most books to be focused on the NH audience. I too have taken on a task of developing an extensive spreadsheet using the four volume "Night Aky Observer's Guide" by Cooper, Kay, and Keeple. I use the WO GT 102 triple refractor with a ZWO294 MC. To filter out unsuitable potential targets I too used the tool in Telescopius to ensure the target fitted camera/scope. The time spent will be a great time saver in the future - so important for a 72 year old just getting started into this fantastic hobby. Keep up the good work. Kind regards, Charlie.

This is something I've always wondered about. In Japan we can see 100F easy during the day in August and into Sept and probably much higher humidity than you see. In the past I packed up for this period, but this summer, I tried doing AP anyway by setting up every night (still 90F at night + high humidity) but I experienced frequent disconnects of the mount and auto focuser. I thought the heat might be the cause, but I was also worried about the sensitive camera components. I can cool to 0 but the cooler runs at 80% or more. Frustrating...

Hello, Pretty much the same here ins Western France and this summer end quickly shitted very early to autumn... Temperatures close to 10/15°C and almost all nights cloudy... Rain very often, and few nights available for our hobby... But, frankly, I prefer my temperatures and the rain, when you see what's happening to Dave ! And it ain't gonna improve, as pollution is very high in the USA and the El Nino/Nina phenomenon doesn't make things any better! Many places in India, Pakistan have become hostile to human life, but I just wonder if it's not getting the same in the hottest U.S states! I don't know how they manage to live days, weeks, mnths and years like that! No other choice I guess... The worst is that we cannot say "courage it's just a bad moment to pass”, no, it's a trend that will continue and amplify as long as no serious action is taken by the planet's most polluting countries... In any case, the effects are set in stone, there's no longer any possibility of reversing them, that's a fact, but we can still limit the consequences a little. Let's be clear, this is not a judgement against ordinary Americans, who are suffering more and more of the consequences on a daily basis, but simply against politicians in denial, and above all businessmen who only see the future in terms of their own short-term interests... I'm really sorry Dave for all these constraints, which I imagine you'd be happy to do without ;-) Looking forward to seeing you again in better conditions and continuing to share your experience and advice! Philippe

As long as there is a slight breeze the Mele Mini PC seems Ok. The only struggle is cooling the camera's but normally possible to get it in the ball park of useful cooling. I wouldnt worry about the grease - unless its REALLY poor stuff it should hold up with those sort of temps. Do hope it cools down for you though.

I have a new DSD flat panel that I will be using remotely so I am setting it up here at home to use my LRGB filters and an ASI2600MM camera with my Epsilon. So far I have followed your video on the flat wizard in NINA. But do I not have the current NINA version? Because I have a blank on each filter setup for "flat step size". You don't seem to have that on your version.
