Glad to have you on the team!
You and your companion add a nice and warm feeling at the end of the video.
Thank you man!
great video!

The F1 is certainly a top camera but you have to to also admire the magnificent Canon A1. It's less "modular", I agree but I've had F1 Canons in the past and sold them - and kept my trusty 47 year old A1. As I've gotten older, I appreciate the benefits of autofocus cameras (ie, Canon EOS 1n, Nikon F100 or F5 for instance). Nonetheless, every so often, I dust off the A1, load it up with TMax 400, and go for a leisurely stroll.....
That might be true. My F1 just stopped working. The film advance lever is kinda stuck and only advanced once I turn the shutter lock on. And even then it stays stuck sometimes. Anyway, I never have had it CLAed which I should probably do and it will be fine for the next ten years.
Cool work! Lovely way to shoot, i feel a bit of regret for selling my 500c...
Thanks a ton. Much love!
Theres something so peaceful shooting relatively mundane landscapes. While cool mountains and waterfalls provide excitement. I find myself slowing down more and becoming more in touch with the process when there are no obvious compositions to distract me
True. Sometimes it’s just not about the motif or even photography itself. And then again at the same time it very much is.
Hi, I have been enjoying the locations you have chosen to take photos at. To be honest I don’t always agree with pov of horizon or placement of subject but I still enjoy the images. What is disappointing is not mentioning the roll of film you are using. I’m in the process of determining which film stock to invest my time with instead of purchasing different films for testing. With this current location my guess is Kodak Gold but please correct if I am wrong. I understand you don’t want to make the video about gear but you do if you mention the lenses. Please consider mentioning the film type so we all can see how the film renders colors. Thank you for sharing.
You’re absolutely right! Will try and do it better in future videos. Also, please consider following my threads or Insta as I sometimes post images from my videos with a bit more info in the description. Also Gold 200 has become my go to film stock. It’s just the best value and very close to Portra imho. If I don’t state otherwise it’s Gold in my videos just so you know.
Nicolas, I enjoyed the video. Exceptional videography - and the photographs are very nice. Keep up the great work…
Comments on this video make me extra happy. Thank you so much. It means a lot!
This was beautiful!! Would love to see more in this style
Thank you so much. It’s been a bit off topic but then again it’s not. The whole point of photography for me is to kond of zone out a bit.
Nice vid brother! Especially like what you said about imperfection. I live in Japan and we have the same concept here: wabi-sabi. In fact the reason for shooting film is the imperfection in it. Then when you digitise, you get all of it - wabi-sabi and all! 😎
Thank you man. Shoutout to Japan!
Thanks for the shout. Great set of photos. I especially liked the ones of the beach chairs. Coincidentally, last week I was on England's Jurassic Coast for a continuing project and was lucky enough to get some similar light. If you are ever over here try to visit St Ives in Cornwall where the light is fantastic!
Heard a lot of good things about Cornwall and especially Jurassic Coast. Would love to go there and a couple of other places in Great Britain like Isle of Skye and many more.
Had me at the alarm spot. Great content, great shots. New subscriber! Cheers from Alberta, Canada.
Hi Canada! Glad you joined the team!
Dope new aesthetic. Soutouts to Peter Mckinnen for saving your lens. The shots really are quite meditative, see you in the next one!
drinking and driving is CRAZY to me as an American. I need a Tesla and a passport to Germany ASAP.
Who was drinking..
@@nicarnold Someone in a different Tesla. ;)
A truly wonderful video. The Classic Canon F1 a joy to see and the images, made by you, steller! Bravo!
Thank you man. That’s too kind.
One can be influenced by another! Your images are beautiful and purely, your very own! Bravo.
Thank you Jason!
Great shots! I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you!
Correction: Photo at 3:25 is Jeff Mermelstein - shame on me!
Wild architecture!
True!
Always love the video… enjoy every bit of this especially and thanks for the kicker
Thanks a ton. Glad you are enjoying this!
man with book in the mouth is Jeff Mermelstein photo. nice video so far, but I have to pause just to comment this, not Joel Meyerowitz that one
Yes! Thank you! JM got me confused!
I love your compositions. You manage to capture the emotion and atmosphere perfectly. Thank you for inspiring the next chapter in my photographic journey.
Awww 🥹
I’m realizing after 25 years of photography I’ve never seen a single Peter McKinnon video or even know what this guy looks like 😂. Enjoyable video by the way.
@@WhoIsSerafin Even more peculiar: you never heard of McKinnon but you are HERE!
@nicarnold I've heard of him, but never had an interest in watching him. The super popular, celebrity types just tend to automatically turn me off. I look for the small channels.
What do you mean small?
I am just kidding.
Beautiful photographs. What is audio at 12:47 ?
Song‘s called In Motion by Adam Bokesch.
@@nicarnold thank you
Having shot digital for so long, the standard 3:2 ratio and all the auto features, taking photos is easy and takes the fun out of photography in my opinion. I love Medium format photography and the 6x6 format. My Hasselblad has me excited about taking photos again. I feel more connected to the images I produce because it takes time to capture them. I love my 1970 500cm.
That‘s the spirit.
Thank you for this video. It's pretty bloody awesome and I'm glad you've kind of rediscovered square photography. I'm new to medium format having bought a Mamiya 645 1000s Gold Lizard special edition and I'm really loving shooting in that format. Then in post production I'm cropping a little - just a little, to the Academy Ratio just to give it that feeling of comfort. But I've just bought a Hasselblad 500C/M and, well, square is a whole other thing isn't it? And I'm so looking forward to the symmetry and the beauty of it!
Thanks a ton and welcome to the fam!
Your video is so warm and hearty! It's pleasure to watch it, it's pleasure to dive into the story and experience you're talking about.
Aww, no YOU are warm and hearty! 🥺🫶🏼
I notice you shoot a lot on FP4 in other videos. Is that what you are using here as well?
No! I shot these on Tri-X 400!
@@nicarnold beautiful, great contrast!
a great video, but what enlarger did you use?, are all enlargers 120 or 4x5" capable?, so how did you get yours, where did you get the paper, Ilford filters?, etc.
Durst M805 BW - it came with two Rodenstock lenses covering everything from 35mm up to 6x7, complete with filters and 10 year old baryta paper.
at 19:30 you forgot the submarine cry of "BATTLE STATIONS" before turning the lights red!!
also for me, Hasselblads are the bokeh monsters, NOT LF Fujinon SWD quality bokeh, of course!, but wow, what a UI and the sound, just makes you want to slow down, do things mechanically, just to hear that WAH AH 🙂
True. Operating this things makes up for all the pain.
at 8:16, that's the reason for modularity, in cameras, so you have TWO backs, and can switch between mid-roll 🙂; so if you wanted b&w or colour, go ahead, switch, get the shot!
That’s correct if you brought color film with you.
fotogenic city, beautiful images! very good exposed
Thank you!
🙏🏻
👌
I will be great if Sony could make a square sensor !
Just put your Sony in 1:1 aspect ratio mode. Or wait for me doing a video about it not too far in the future.
@@nicarnold 🤣 No that I will not do, I will prefer a much larger sensor for that ! But I do sometimes crop into square format. I had a Hasselblad 2000 FC for 16 years, so I know a lot about square format.
Well i see it as a really nice diss for youtube shouty boys.
The F-1 is a hall-of-famer.
Thanks, you made some very clear points. I’ve been shooting square film almost 40 years and it has its own view and creative possibilities, however, in the past much emphasis was placed on shooting for the crop instead of the square. And I can go on and on about this but will save it.. The square is iconic as is!
100%
One of your best videos and super photos! Bravo.
Thank you! Stay tuned for E15!
After 12:44 I lost interest for some reason.
12:44 is the best part.
Hey Nicolas , I’m so glad you mentioned Album covers .. your photo of the two horses is a perfect Album cover for the guy who was in Midlake.. a great band they recently split and he has done a solo Album.. he might like your photo for his next .. maybe try and reach out. I’m almost certain you are a Pink Floyd fan … if and it’s a big if.. you have not yet seen Hipgnosis a documentary you must watch it immediately! Peace ✌️ Tommy.
Will check it out. Big fan of their early work. Not so much of their latest output in terms of political views.
A square sensor, what the 907x should have had.
Something I‘ll never understand.
Finally, a Hasselblad user who actually knows how to load film in properly. All these youtube photographers with Hasselblads take off the whole back to load an i'm not sure why when all you have to do is pop out the film cartridge and pop it back in.
Yeah I‘ll do both ways to cover all personal preferences across my audience tho. 🫶🏼
Hi nicolas, always love the video! Do you mostly shoot on a zeiss 50mm lens?
Nope. I am using 50mm, 80mm, 100mm pretty much en par. Been using the 50 for 90% of this video though!
Hey Nicolas, I’m 5 minutes in and fuck Apple Music and fuck Spotify… Fuck all social media right ! Apart from RUclips. You are getting so much better with the “Hassy” I just recently purchased a Hassy”500cm. It’s so beautiful I can’t take my eyes off of it. Super cool videos. Keep on shooting on. Peace ✌️ Tommy.
Thanks mate!
I shot with different Hasselblads for 15 years and made the square work for me more than it just fell into place. At some point I realized I just let the square groundglass dictate my composition too often and adjusted my habits of using the negative-space accordingly which meant cropping more in the darkroom. On the flipside I wouldn't have discovered some very nice square compositions without the square camera. I now use a 6x7 and also have a groundglass indicating 6x6 for the odd square composition so the Hasselblad definitely left a mark.
Even less images from one roll with 6x7 but stunning resolution. You can truly spend your whole life mastering all formats.
@@nicarnold In my experience it is gear and not film which eats your money even at current prices for both and opportunities to shoot are priceless! Like Ansel said: Use the largest format you are able to carry.
Your videos always make me want to dust off the old hassie and shoot again. But they also make want to shoot videos as well. It's such a pleasure to see you do both so well. Keep up the good work.
Glad these videos do anything to you!
