Aurora Storm over North Yorkshire - 10 to 11 October 2024 (Part 1)
Просмотров 56Месяц назад
A G4 level 'severe' geomagnetic storm hit the Earth on 10-11 October 2024. This was produced by a fast-moving coronal mass ejection from sunspot AR3848. The Kp number (the measure of geomagnetic activity in the Earth's atmosphere) was 8 for several hours. There were clear skies over much of the UK so many people got to see a spectacular display of aurora, including myself in North Yorkshire. Th...
Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) from North Yorkshire - 14 October 2024
Просмотров 99Месяц назад
My first sighting of comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) after perihelion, viewed from North Yorkshire on the evening of 14 October 2024. The comet was tricky to spot at first, due to the bright sky. As it got darker though, the comet was revealed. First using binoculars and on camera, and then naked eye. The tail was stunning, at least 15 degrees in length visually. Northern Lights over North Yorkshire on 7 October 2024
Просмотров 34Месяц назад
I caught a display of aurora on 7 October 2024, from 18:48 to 22:07 UT. Most of the time, the display was a low green glow to the north but activity did pick up a couple of times during the evening. The most active aurora was around 21:00 UT (starting at 00:50 in the video). It was quite a cloudy evening but luckily there were sufficient gaps to catch some of the northern lights display. #Auror...
Perseid Meteor Shower from the North York Moors - 6 to 7 August 2024
Просмотров 1262 месяца назад
My first video covering the Perseids meteor shower 2024, from 6-7 August. I was at a dark location on the North York Moors to spot some early Perseids and to do some astrophotography. I wanted to get some targets low down in the Scutum region and the moors are the best place for that due to the unobscured horizon. I wasn't sure how many Perseids I'd be able to see and capture, this being quite ...
Partial Lunar Eclipse from North Yorkshire - 18 September 2024
Просмотров 512 месяца назад
I was lucky with the weather for the partial lunar eclipse visible from North Yorkshire on the morning of 18 September 2024. I was able to capture the majority of the event. The Moon moving behind some trees prevented me from capturing the last hour of the penumbral eclipse. I did capture the whole of the umbral phase though, which is the darkest part of the eclipse. This video shows some image...
Summer Triangle and Satellites Timelapse - 1 to 2 August 2024

North Yorkshire Noctilucent Clouds - 28 to 29 June 2024
Просмотров 194 месяца назад
This display of noctilucent clouds started off quite bright and high in the late evening of 28 June 2024. It became visible earlier than most displays I've observed and was initially quite bright, so I anticipated a good display. Unfortunately, there was lots of low-level cloud this evening and this blocked my view of the display after a few minutes. There were some more NLCs closer to the hori...
North Yorkshire Noctilucent Clouds - 23 to 24 June 2024

A good display of noctilucent clouds visible from 23 to 24 June 2024 from North Yorkshire. This was an interesting display in that it was seen quite early in the evening. I first caught sight of noctilucent clouds from around 21:40 UT. They were visible even though the sky was still quite bright at the time. As the sky darkened, more of the display was seen and it was quite high for a time. It ...
North Yorkshire Noctilucent Clouds - 17 to 18 June 2024

There was a good display of noctilucent clouds visible from 17-18 June 2024 from North Yorkshire. They were visible on the European webcams so I thought there would be a good chance of seeing them in the UK. The display was quite faint and low for a while, as well as being blocked by low-level cloud. It really got going after around 1am though. In the later stages of the display, many wave-like...

The first noctilucent clouds display I've seen in the 2024 season. It started off faint but still noticeable. After a few minutes it became brighter and quite extensive, the clouds being visible to the naked eye from the northwest to the northeast. I observed them from 23:25 to 01:40 UT. The noctilucent clouds were eventually lost to the encroaching dawn and some low level clouds that came over...

Stunning Aurora (Northern Lights) seen over North Yorkshire on 10-11 May 2024

I was lucky enough to see the spectacular display of aurora as the G5 solar storm hit on 10 to 11 May 2024. The view from North Yorkshire was incredible, especially in the late evening. The aurora was right overhead, and I could see rays of various colours streaming down to the horizon. My camera picked up even more detail and I took a series of time lapse sequences that turned out very well. T...
Moonlit Nacreous Clouds (Polar Stratospheric Clouds) seen from North Yorkshire on 24 December 2023

I was observing the 95% lit Moon in Taurus this evening when I noticed some odd-looking clouds. Having just enjoyed the strong display of nacreous clouds during the day, I wondered if they were still around. I took some shots and these confirmed that they were indeed nacreous clouds. They are a rare sight this far south but to see them at night illuminated by the Moon is very rare indeed. I too...

Woooooooooooooow nice
Thanks! 😃
Lovely video, nice to see it without the clouds we had down south!
It was lucky the clouds stayed away this time. With solar maximum now here we should be getting strong displays for at least the next few months. Perhaps not as good as this one but I'm sure there will be more displays visible from the south of the UK.
All rather sensational! Those oranges are sublime.
Cheers! Yea, there were a lot of orange colours visible, more so than the previous strong display in May. I saw more later in the night too, which will be in my second video. I just need time to put it all together 😁
More nice captures Steve. Thanks for sharing 😄🔭
Thanks! It was an unbelievable night. More to come in part 2 (when I get the time to create the video) 😄
What an awesome capture Steve... Sadly thick cloud and rain here in Hull or 'Ull as we say it 😭🔭
Thanks! Yea, been cloudy here since then. Hopefully we'll get clear skies in the next few days for another go at the comet.
@@sjbastro Fingers Crossed 🤞
great work Steve, hope you don't mind me asking, what telescope are you using
@@Sbu_Phakathwayo a Celestron NexStar 6SE.
what telescope are you using
Nice. All we had was cloud and rain here in Hull 😢 I did get some great shots and video of the last showing on the Northern Lights in mid Sept. I might have to start a channel and upload my stuff 🤔
An enjoyable video and nice captures. Thanks for sharing
A very respectable haul!
Thanks! More to follow, as soon as I get a chance to put them together 😁
Nicely captured, Steve. The timelapse was very satisfying to watch!
Thanks! I was lucky to have clear sky for the eclipse. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. Just the kind of thing that a timelapse shows really well. I did have a few telescope tracking issues, which led to the odd frame not fully matching the rest. I'll know for next time not to let it drift around too much.
Nice, Steve - lots going on up there!
Incredible footage. I was unable to observe myself but watching this makes up for it. Are you aware that your fantastic work was mentioned by Paul on Episode 146 of the Awesome astronomy Podcast? So glad they mentioned you as your work is a pleasure to observed. Thank you for publishing this! 🕊
Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed the video - it was certainly an unforgettable night. Yea, I heard the AA podcast - always nice to get a mention on that excellent show. 😃
Wow, that display is breathtaking. Thank you for capturing and sharing it :)
Thankyou
Nice! 80 km up and are so lovely! We have them a lot here over Stockholm during the later part of the Summer so I have lots of piccies
That is absolutely beautiful. Just as an aside, we got s superb display of noctilucent clouds here in York on Dec 24th.
Absolutely stunning display, congratulations Steve 👏
Thanks! We'll hopefully get a few more this season. It's shaping up to be a good one.
Brilliant captures and display Steve, congratulations on your first sighting this year. What lenses did you use can I ask please
Thanks! It was a fairly good start to the season. For the wider angle shots I used a 16mm lens (probably too wide for a display that is low down like that one). There is another sequence that used a 24mm lens. The closer shots all used a 50mm lens.
@@sjbastrothank you
Lovely sequences, Steve - looks like a solid display. Thanks for sharing. I’m yet to get off the mark from here this year.
Cheers - hopefully we'll get a few more like that and the sky stays clear for them.
Having missed that spectacular night, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this through your eyes and your lens!! Loved the excitement in your voice!! Thanks for sharing, Steve!! Great job!!
i saw this from a hill in oxfordshire. At first a thick green band was visible to the naked eye across the whole sky and then all hell broke loose.I was shouting oh my god, what the hell...texting people telling them to go look. Went to bed at 12:30 though it seems the display lasted most of the night. Absolutely amazing. Plus a fox i feed came out to say hello while i was watching the storm, so he got some grub:)
Nice one - it must have been great to see from a hill as you'd get a good context with the surrounding countryside. Hopefully your texts meant a few more people got to see it.
Wow! Beautifully captured Steve - especially all the corona displays! Great to see your reaction at the end.
Thanks! I never thought I'd see such a display from the UK. Watching it, I was almost speechless, as you can tell! 😄
Loved that, Steve. Did you ever think you’d be able to put together an 8 minute video of timelapse, stills and real time video of overhead aurora from your own area all from the same night?! Madness. Loved hearing your reaction as well - special times. 👍
Indeed! Glad you liked my efforts. Everything seemed to fall into place - powerful solar storm hitting at the right time of night for the UK, clear skies, no Moon interfering, negative Bz all night etc. I think it hasn't fully sunk in yet for the community just how special the event was 😃
@@sjbastro 100%! We only lacked a unicorn!!
Beautiful shots Steve! I was under those coronal aurora in Ireland, it was magical!
Nice!!
Nice one! Magical is the perfect word for seeing that corona 😃
Is this APRIL 8-10 ?
Absolutely stunning Steve. Although I wouldn't expect anything less. What interval have you left between each exposure in the timelapses?
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I tried to do justice to the display. With most of my time lapse shots I find it works best to have the long exposure noise reduction on and use this as the interval. So, most of the corona shots were between 1s and 2s long so the interval was the same, plus a second or so for the camera to write the file. So, the very first corona shot was at 1.6s plus the same for the noise reduction. When I look at the files there seems to be 5s between each shot (it was a 550D and so a bit slow at writing the file). The west and east shots were similar but slightly longer exposure times of 1s to 3.2s. Some of the sequences make the aurora look a little 'fast' but in reality it was changing form pretty rapidly anyway so I thought I'd leave it in the video as is.
you need to take photos videos dont show the full spectrum
Those videos are all made up of individual photos put together as a time lapse.
Incredible, Steve!!
Some of the best pictures I’ve seen of these, Steve (and there were lots of pictures before Christmas!!). Very nicely captured. What a show!
Thanks! It was a stunning display and I took so many shots it seemed like a good idea to put a video together. Glad you liked it 😃👍
do you play fortnite?
Io looks really close to Jupiter in these photos. I looked it up and Io is generally about 260,000 miles from Jupiter. To put that in perspective, Earth's moon is generally between 240,000 to 250,000 miles from Earth.
Wow thanks for uploading
Amazing views, I caught a glimpse from where I live in Cheshire and they were epic!! I took some nice photos too.
Thanks! Glad you got to see the display. As we're not even at solar maximum yet there's a good chance we'll get another one or two that good in the next few months. Clear skies!
Well done
Those bright ones look amazingly beautiful. Do they look that bright through your eyes? Or just on camera? I live too far south to have seen any noctilucent clouds in person.
They're so bright! Great timelapse, steve!
Thanks! One of the brighter displays I've seen this season. Overall it has been a bit disappointing this year, with displays reduced in number and intensity. I was glad to have caught this one though.
Very nice Steve - I love watching them! I’ve had no joy o far this season (the late evening shift is the only feasible one for me and so far they’ve been shy until morning) - hopefully they’ll build some more in the coming weeks.
Thanks. It has been a bit difficult this year and now we are pretty much at the end of the season. Did you manage to catch any displays?
@@sjbastro I managed one snap of them between the clouds on my phone one night, but no “proper” images. Just lots of failed outings! C’est la vie - if it was easy, everyone would be doing it!
Fantastic Steve. So pleased for you that they showed up. 👍
Thanks! We're at the end of the season now, pretty much anyway. I managed to catch a few displays but it was a bit hit and miss when they'd appear. It will be interesting to see if things improve next year.
Great video, Steve. There was so much structure in that display, and I think that’s the first time I’ve seen the Pleiades embedded in a display. Marvellous. Looking forward to things kicking off next month 🤞
Great sequences, Steve - I love the longer focal lengths in particular. Not long until this year’s season, although a bit concerned with the sun going nuts over the last 6 months the right conditions might be hard to come by. Got to be in it to win it though!
Thanks! I should make more effort to upload them and not wait months to do so :-) I have another one I think to do from last season that has some close-up shots too. Hopefully we'll get another good season but with the solar activity I'm not so sure. All we can do is keep watching. Clear skies!
Great work!
Thanks!
Thank you. New sub.
Thanks for the sub! :-)
Very very nice, Steve! I love the final picture, looks like a laser piercing through the moon.
Epic footage, thank you very much for sharing!!
Great capture! I filmed the Northern Taurids on the 29th of October and saw an amazing amount of meteors!
Some nice captures there, Steve. If only that house was a little shorter - that one looked like a belter!
Thanks - yea, meteors are seldom cooperative with my camera position! 😄
Great compilation,Steve. 👍
Thanks 👍😃
Wow!! So cool!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :-)
