How To Arrange Music for Concert Band
Just so you know the famous "orchestral hit" sound that is ubiquitous on electronic keyboards is not a fake hit. It is a direct sample of the opening hit of Stravinsky's "Infernal Dance" from The Firebird.
Plus: In the middle section (2 bars before Figure 182) of the Sacrificial Dance, there's a subtle reference to the medieval Dies Irae motive played by Eb and C trumpets. Realising that sent me a shiver.
I am coming back to this video after a while, the amount that Stravinsky carries his motifs is remarkable. There is faint call back to the Bassoon solo at the beginning a little ways into part 2, it follows a similar pattern. I´ve never seen this pointed out by anyone before as most of it is not very obvious, especially in this piece.
this motif is carried around the introduction and mystic circles for a while and is seen in the violin solo
hey bro you cooked with this bro
Such a great video, loving my own work has been the biggest struggle of my journey so far, I really appreciate this
Thanks, needed this for what I’m doing
obrigado:D <3
I might be weird, but I always sort of analyze Mars as being in G minor and sonata form, with the second theme being the chromatic trombone line in C major--and the third theme being the horn calls (though more used as possibly a variation of the original ostinato). Venus too, just without a development section; the Bb minor second theme (notated in D# minor?!) is just repeated in Eb minor instead. The form feels like a favorite of Schubert's slow movements too--listen to the 8th B minor symphony. (i haven't watched the full video yet, but i'll give my thoughts after the full vid)
I love this piece of music. The narration here, though...not so much.
My favourite in the suite by far, an absolute masterpiece. Thanks for the analysis!
16:40 not to be that guy, but those are violas.
Good content, but spoiled heavily for me by the electronic narration; a scourge of many RUclips videos.
I would love to hear your analysis of a piece by Scriabin.
Love some of the harmony
3 hour video "A brief analysis"
So I ended up buying the Berlin sounds for musescore and I used them on this and I actually really like it, would you like to hear it? I was actually pleasantly surprised but I had to do some tweaking because the sound's Dynamics were way different lol
Yes I would LOVE to hear that, sorry for late reply. My email should be in the about section of my channel.
@@The_Xylophone no problem just lemme update the score to unlisted and I'll send it to you within the next 5 minutes
@@The_Xylophone okay I can't find your email lol
@@krysztof6917 should be there now
@@The_Xylophone okay I sent it to you now! sorry I'm feeling sick so I was slow today 😅😅
John Williams was greatly influenced by this piece when he wrote the Star Wars:A New Hope film music score. Two parts in Rite Of Spring in particular sound like Star Wars. The intro to the 2nd part sounds like the Dune Sea Of Tatooine music(when C-3PO is walking alone in the desert) and the Ritual Action Of The Ancestors sounds very much like the music that plays when R2 is captured by the Jawas.
The funny thing the long rest rule doesn't really apply to harp in a large ensemble setting, the instrument is meant to be a really special color But it doesn't always project super far so if you can weave the harp into the orchestral texture seamlessly then it could be fun as long as it's not really hard It's horrible for us when we have a hard part that's not audible.
This piece is to music what the Garden of Earthly Delights is to painting.
Underrated is heck bro! You’ve earned a subscriber!
Can you make more videos please. I love your content and it has been a while
It would be cool to see an analysis of Music For 18 Musicians by steve reich
I'll give it a listen
One of my favorite compositions. I guess it takes a weird introvert and music nerd to love both calm music and dissonant music.
Here’s a suggestion for another analysis series, two actually, either Carmina Burana by Carl orff,or Dvorak’s 9th symphony, both of these are ones I frequently listen to but surprisingly don’t have many in depth analysis series like this. I would binge either of those videos I’m one go,I love them and would love to see how you would do it. Love the work dude 👍✌️
I love Dvorak's 9th! Will consider...
@@The_Xylophone YES!!!
This was my introduction to Stravinsky, even before Firebird, Petrushka, and Pulcinella. Still one of my favourite pieces of all time.
agreed.
12:48 The "tenor tubas" in this piece are not euphoniums as you have pictured. They are actually tenor Wagner tubas. This can be confusing since the term is commonly used for both instruments.
It depends on the performance, of course. Different orchestras have different resources available to them. But you are right, there is a difference between those instruments. :)
@@The_Xylophone No performance that I am aware of uses euphoniums.
I'm obsessed with this piece right now. I may listen to the whole once a day, and I still love it the same as the first time. It's just always giving surprises. Great analysis, especially at helping with the imagery and instrumentation. Not too technical, not to obvious.
This piece is full of little secrets and details. Keep listening my friend, my analysis only scratched the surface 😂
How is your sound quality so good?
I used the MuseScore 4 MuseSounds library which is really good (plus a tiny bit of mixing and mastering)
Fun fact, the bassoon at the beginning reaches the low soprano register. It would be the C (faCe) in the treble clef.
For the time it was an insane note
@@The_Xylophone It was originally for the french bassoon as the older german had only a high a, maybe a high c, but there is still a high d and e in there so it would be impossible back then.
I am very enlightened, thank you!
can you do a deep dive into xruclips.net/video/SydDUDW9vKA/видео.html
I'm currently writing an assignment about this piece, and this video really helped me through my mid-work depression, mainly because of the jokes and memes. Thanks a lot mate!
Awesome analysis. I wish the volume between the voiceover and the music itself was more balanced.
Sorry to hear that. Glad you still enjoyed
Thank you sir, trying to introduce my kids to Stravinsky. They only like the augures printaniers part 😮💨
20:35 ngl this is the song that plays in my head at school when im confused
Great video man.
I just played a celesta for the first time last week, (my main background is percussion but my first instrument was piano). I’m learning Venus from The Planets, and I absolutely loved playing the celesta, it is such a beautiful and underrated instrument. I wish there was more orchestral compositions with the Celesta. This piece sounds so cool, it brings out more of a percussive sound to the celesta without having it sound as bright or articulate as a glockenspiel, great work!
It's horrifying. You die from atonality, you die trying to play it, you die trying to dance it and you totally die if you get it wrong, and that's why I love it. What else is there to say about the Sacrificial Dance form The Rite of Spring?
This piece is actually mostly tonal.
This is an amazing video! I’m glad to have found you before you famous, Keep Going! 🐄
I will never give up
Wow this video is super huge, super massive. But wow what great content, I learned very much
This video is a masterpiece!!! I hope it gets the attention it deserves.
That would be epic
Some about instrument ranges, the Bassoon is perfectly fine the bassoon actually is really good as a tenor instrument thats where it sings super well so i think that's perfectly good for its range despite being high The horn might be high maybe? But my Hornist friend said it's pretty good for its range even though its high but i think Hornists crack no matter the range at times 😂 It just seems to be life as a horn player
Hornists always complain about their upper register 😂
@@The_Xylophone haha very true, also I noticed what's the reason you didn't write an oboe part?
Younger me must have forgotten that oboes existed lol, I have no idea why I didn't decide to add it. Oh well, I can always make another version in the future.
I love this piece! I've been listening to it to fall alseep and also to calm myself down when stressed; thank you so much for such a wonderful piece it's helping me through a tough time, I'd also love to learn the harp part 😊 Have you posted this to musescore as well?
So glad to hear that. I didn't know my music was capable of that, so Thank you! I posted it here on MuseScore: musescore.com/user/47479415/scores/10631341.
HE'S BACK! AND WITH A THREE HOUR BANGER!!!!
I will be keeping track of my various comments here:
The trombones in mars sound so menacing, and you can tell that the conductor totally leans into their trombone-ness.
Unbridled rage mentioned
I need to play at least the last part of mars with a big band.
