The Enterprise Adopting Modern Steam Tractors
Meet Wilding & Co., who are soon to become one of the first adopters of Mackwell Technology.
An ecologically minded social enterprise based in Central Otago, New Zealand, Wilding & Co. create high value essential oils from invasive Douglas fir pine trees. They seek to use Mackwell Engines to displace Diesel from their operation whilst improving the economic, operational and environmental performance of their business. The Mackwell A35 Engine is a near perfect solution for this enterprise and the global essential oils industry.

Many thanks to you , because it's a very commandable to work for resurrecting steam for modern and post oil peak uses. All of peoples talk of new types of batteries, solar, hydrogen ,... it's all non-sens. Because all of that is high-tec, short timelife, irreaparable ,doesn't need of globalization; etc ... One of the only right ways, for railway , agriculture, ships, is STEAM. Because it's proven, simple , low-tec, durable, reparable, without need of globalization. Of course durable and sustainable developpement will need global decrease to allows sufficient amount of natural combustible fuel for each people on earth in equivalence.

A 40 ton locomotive. What exactly do you intend to pull with this powerful monster. Understand that a locomotive wheel, regardless of diameter, has the contact area the size of a U.S. dime and tractive effort - the ability to pull a load, depends a LOT on the weight of the engine. You are building a year switcher. Short line diesel engines have more tractive effort.

I really love your videos, it is like listening to someone that is on my same wave length. I to built a wood fired boiler but only went as far as building a 1 HP Stuart Turner No1 steam engine.... I went down a similar path with hydrogen as you after being frustrated living on a farm run on solar electricity, as I looked at storing the excess solar power in summer time for winter use... but reached similar conclusions that hydrogen had to many efficiency losses.. I have a partly built steam turbine set up to drive a 12v alternator, so your videos were like s trip down memory lane in that regard. Have you looked into making a gas producer to run your tractor on wood? They can work heaps better now with the newer insulations and higher temperatures than when they were used during WW2... supposedly one kg of nice dry wood has similar energy density to 1lt of petrol.... Most refreshing to see interests in these things still alive and well.. especially with new innovation being applied. Best wishes

Do you know also one of the reasons why water tube boilers were a failure on steam locomotives is that locomotives go through a lot of rough riding on the track specially at high speed you get lots of vibration and harmonics vibrations over time those water tubes will vibrate and start to metal fatigue over time and then the tubes would rupture and send that pressure back into the firebox if you have a tube rupture how are you going to prevent the fire blowing out the firebox door metal fatigue is a real issue with water to boilers I have an invention for you to solve that problem if you're interested peace out into the world have a great day

One thing that I never see in the steam engine channels is the issue of political and environmental disasters on the transportation industry. In this unstable political turmoil all it takes is a series of airborne nuclear blasts to fry all electronics, shutting down all forms of transportation. With the current weakening of the earth's magnetic field, the increasing possibility of a solar coronal mass ejection on the level of the well-known Carrington event will accomplish the same thing thing. Diesel locomotives carry a high majority of our goods across the continents. They are largely controlled by electronics and computers. An EMP blast from either solar or nuclear events will render the locomotive permanently unusable. By contrast, the steam locomotive is essentially a mechanical machine which would be largely immune to these problems and would be able to carry on the transport of goods in a world that may have been blasted back to the 1800s. With the increased efficiency of the steam engines being developed in Australia and other regions, my concern would be putting all efforts to making the transportation field immune to natural and political disasters via the use of steam locomotives and steam tractors .

and has all the issues garrets have where A) consuming fuels reduces the weight over the drivers B) you can't see shit around the boiler C) tractive effort/speed set by wheel/piston size D complex motion that got to be oiled and wheat's out faster than a traction motor. There's a reason every state threw out or sold off the garrets the first chance they got - none of them preformed well. Had the states not been forced into buying them they would have never bought them.

Can we put one into a ship? Maybe 300hp on a coastal freighter. We want to work in the Islands helping remote communities but diesel is increasingly troublesome. Lots of biomass though. Husks and wood etc. Possibly the agloco that can be removed from the ship hold to assist on land and recover biomass. Then replace to provide propulsion. Love your passion. We need a solution. I think the number one issue to solve with steam is how to make it easier to repair and maintain locomotives. If it would be easier to just swap parts like on a diesel locomotives I think they would be more attractive and competative. I've heard from a guy who has worked with both diesel and steam locomotives and he said that in a diesel workshop you swap parts, in a steam workshop you make parts.

is the a.g loco free from cylinder condensation? i drove a lot of steam locos in my early years and they needed constant use of the cylinder drains to spill out all the condensed water;some engines with certain types of valve gears had ther cylinder heads blown off due to the water accumulation in the system. does that also happen with the mackwell locomotives?

I've been saying it for years, steam has HUGE amounts of instant torque AND because of this has zero need for a complex transmission just like EVs, but on top of that doesn't rely on costly and damaging lithium mining and refining. If you can make the boiler compact enough to have good all around visibility without sacrificing efficiency, safety or simplicity you're golden! Best of luck guys!
