"Stranger Swings" | Are Ancient Chinese Reproduction Swords Worth Buying??
This video is mainly to point out that, ultimately, the weapon you buy, should be the weapon that suits you, not something you're pressured into.
To that end, we look at some unusual models, and assess if and why they may or may not be worth owning.
As always, thank you all for watching, and if you haven't, please subscribe to our channel for new content every week, sometimes more!

Просмотров 972 месяца назад
Some basic jian/gim cuts, leading up to a horizontal cut from a "5 Ancestor's Boxing" sequence I learned from Sifu Joshua Durham a Master of 5A weapons. I won't lie; it took 3 trys to keep the blade flat enough to make the cut at the end of the sequence. That said, I'm happy it only took 2 failed cuts to re-assess, and get it right. :) #kungfu #chinesemartialarts #sword

love it. everyone seems to love the heng dao. might need to get that one next 😅
@@jeffdoeskungfu It's a very cool model!!
There's all kind of purists out there, on any subject. It usually is good to stay honest about the origins of things for historical accuracys sake. For functionality however there is nothing wrong from cross referencing techniques from hema, or even coming up with your own. It's easy to think old forms as some sacred doctrine, when it is clear that the masters developed the forms over hours and hours of play, testing and exploration. A cool point about the long handles of the "apparently" single handed sabers: Indonesian&Filipino martial arts utilize the long handle to bind and hook with. Maybe it used to be the same with the dao and the katana, but lost emphasis over the years while the technique survived elsewhere.
Great points, thank you for watching!
Fair play, you're very handy with them shinies. I really like the tang heng dao, very cool design and overall aesthetic is very pleasing. I can't justify spending that much money on a new toy, especially when I just got round to buying the Paul Chen Practical jian, but I'll keep it in mind for perhaps a someday
Thank you for your thoughts, and thank you for watching! I'm always available if you have questions about a particular model!
That thrust impressed me. I have a repro Chinese straight sword with a two hand hilt, but the double edge I don't like because I'm used to using a single edge close to my body by pushing with my shoulder against the back of the blade.
Excellent work! Thank you for your kind words and thanks for watching!
@@saberserpent1134 Most welcome, your content is right along the kind of info I need. I particularly appreciate that you're into Fujian boxing and understand how western boxing can contribute to mastery. I do Jook Lum Tong Long myself, but I've done some Bak Mei and Uechi Ryu in the past.
Awesome ❤
@@Pakua4581 Thank you, sir!
Спасибо Мастер!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very well done, sir. Fantastic sword, love it. I'm of the opinion that the jian, particularly examples like this that are a balanced design between cut and thrust, just may very well be the perfect all-around sword.
I'll answer with this: it's my favorite cutting jian, of the 5 I have.
@@saberserpent1134 do you happen to have any blade specs you could share? Like perhaps approximate thickness at base and near tip (distal taper)? What is the cross-section? Is it a rigid blade or is it thin and "whippy?"
I like your content and form! Just that sometimes you are too stiff! Keep up the good work
You nailed me! Relaxation has been my biggest struggle in martial arts.
@@saberserpent1134 The more you practice, the more the forms will become second nature, and your muscles will relax naturally!
I sure hope so. I've been running these forms almost a decade. But, I'll never give up.
@@saberserpent1134 I've grown up practicing Lam Gar Kuen, the art Cheung Lai Chuen learned alongside Lam You Gwai. While I always practiced with ease, my brother and cousins had a tough time relaxing and generating ging!

Very cool stuff, especially the spinning. Nerves of steel doing that so close to the tv. I have always wondered though - why do you think Chinese styles seldom utilize the range of their halberd style weapons? It’s almost treated more as a sword with a really long hilt than it is a spear (at least, in most of the forms I’ve seen). There certainly must be a reason, but it doesn’t seem apparent to me. Anyway, thanks for another great video.
Thank you for watching @davidrodgers6939 ! Yes, it is treated more as a two-handed saber (shuang shou dao) than a polearm. Part of the reason is, it's literally a dao (saber) sitting on top of a staff (gwun). Being so top-heavy, one has to grip closer to the head/blade to control cuts and edge-alignment. This is also true of the Tiger Fork (trident) in Southern Styles; the head is so heavy, one has to retain a higher grip, thus reducing range.
@@saberserpent1134 So, I guess the benefit of this family of weapons lies more in added power from their mass than added range from their length. That makes sense. Thanks!
My pleasure! Thank you for supporting the channel!
Loved this series. Thanks for this insight.
They are all saved to a playlist, if you want to access the entire form sequences/applications. Just look under the Playlist tab!
Shup Ji Kau Da Kuen? 😬
The bare bones, yes. If you're comparing it to a different lineage, this is probably the form that has the most variations across the 13 recognized lineages. Some have Sui Sup Ji, some have Dai Sup Ji, in our lineage (Lam Hung Pak Mei) we simply call it "Sup Ji Kauh Da Kuen" or "Cross-Pattern Knocking Fist".
Nice footwork, having them apart is realy a key :) punching: in 3:40. Power goes only form your hands. To get more power, need to use more hips(like in boxing).
Absolutely agree! It's something I need to continue working on, and be mindful of when I'm on the bag. That and being "overly tense" have been my two largest hurdles in any martial art.
Thanks for the share brother ….. Take care ✝️
Thanks for watching!!
