35. OFCOM Licence Changes 2024
I explore the new rules around gateways and repeaters. There is still time for changes and consultations are continuing with other primary users but this is a summary of things as they stand in December 2023

Fantastic explanation, well done
Lucky you. Round here its all over the internet using Wires X. There is zero C4FM and hardly any analogue FM either nowadays! You have to admire the efforts to keep VHF alive and its amazing how active 2m can be on 145 alive days and how dead it is the rest of the time. SAD.
Well explained, thank you very much. Salisbury is a bit of an RF black hole but we are lucky enough to have a DMR repeater that's linked to may others via the internet..
Fantastic review, the range on them is superb I find, as for the price, ridiculously cheap for the quality.
Instead of taking out the SD card I just write the program straight to my computer from the radio with cable. And suggestion, lower of get rid of the beeps please.
@@JustLearning thanks for the comment. I prefer to use the card and I also like having the beeps on :)
thank you for the great video. it's been a long time since i used this radio and forgot a lot of stuff
Hi, Quick question. How do you bridge Wires-X to your YSF reflector? I've seen many rooms using Brandmeister to bridge Wires-X to Brandmeister and then Brandmeister to YSF reflector. However, NWFG does not have DMR talkgroup bridged to its network. Hance, my question. How Do you Bridge Wires-X to your YSF reflector?
Thanks for this. Like so many old duffers, I thought most digital required Internet. I appreciate being disabused of that notion.
Hi Ian. Have these changes been finalised yet and if so, are you planning on releasing an updated video?
Hi Ian, what is the issue when my YSF Net is in red (not green). And my reflector is ‘YSF44222 - GB-NWFG2 - Reflector2’. Is this just an update since the video was made? Thanks. Paul.
Great video again. I have to smile each time hear the music on your early videos. It sounds very similar to the music that was used in the classic Bob Ross series, ‘The Joy of painting’! Maybe, I am showing my age! 😊 I had been wondering about the difference between nodes and rooms and so your video was very useful. It is obviously a bit different on the FT70D but very useful nonetheless.
Recently discovered your channel and subscribed. I really appreciate your work and sharing your videos, insights & tutorials I have learned so much from your works. My FTM 400, HRI-200, FT1Ds have been collecting dust in my Shack for a couple of years due 2 Strokes & other medical issues. Now I am looking to clear the dust away and start getting active on YSF Nodes possibly set up a YSF repeater and/or room. I plan to binge watch your videos you have really motivated me thanks, de AA4SH
Hi Ian, great video. Does the hotspot frequency have to be 434.000 or 438.800? Or could it be set to the 2m frequency of my Gateway? Thanks. Paul M7PTH.
Firstly, note that the majority of hotspots do not support VHF, so you may not be able to do this. Secondly, why would you want to do this?
@@NorthWestFusionGroup Thanks for the reply. My Gateway will be an FTM-300 connected to a computer and WiRES-X. I thought if I connected to a hotspot instead, it would free up a computer and I could use YSF via the PI-STAR software instead.
@@PaulThoma5 Your gateway sounds nicely planned. Please do not put a hotspot on a main station aerial. They have poor and unfiltered spectral purity. You will still need a hotspot to use yourself as using your own gateway can be problematical due to the simple conundrum (different video). So keep your gateway setup as planned, then set the hotspot up on one of the 2 hotspot frequencies to use yourself via YSF. This means that you will be transmitted by your gateway and everyone will know it is in use. Ian
@@NorthWestFusionGroup Hi Ian, the plan is to leave the Gateway on it's own, and get another radio for personal use. I will take your advice and leave it setup as the FTM-300/PC/WiRES-X. If I had another radio for personal use, connected to a hotspot and YSF, am I right in saying that radio would need to be connected to an antenna, NOT a dummy load?
@@PaulThoma5 That would depend on distances. If you mean a hand held then just use the aerial on it. If you intend to use a mobile radio, then a dummy load should work within a reasonable distance. I have used dummy loads on 70cm that allow me the use around the house and garden. Ian
A great introduction and glad find this group. I joined in the squirrels net for the first time today and was made to feel very welcome! Linda mentioned the RUclips channel. Thanks for the video. Your video made the process very easy.
Thankyou. I am glad it helped :)

excellent. A big help in claryfying some of the main points.Derek MM0OVD

Hello Ian, I'm new to the hobby having just passed the Foundation Exam. I would like to learn more about C4FM and WIRES-X so intend to watch all of your videos which I find very informative. Could you maybe answer a query for me? If I were to purchase a 'donor' radio (say an FTM-300DE) and connect it to the internet via a HRI-200 and my computer, then use something like a handheld FT3D to connect to the FTM-300DE, would the FTM-300DE need connecting to an antenna? I am thinking it wouldn't because I would be transmitting from the FT3D via the FTM-300DE/HRI-200/Computer/Internet. Am I correct? I'm in Chorley so in the NWFG area. Thanks. Paul. M7PTH.
Great tutorial. Wish I were there right now as it is 20 degrees F in Nashville.
Great information Ian you managed to avoid all the blur Cheers Chris 2e0mow
Clear and to the point, as usual. I do hope that experienced and knowledgeable operators do their best to aid and educate Foundation License holders who are looking to experiment with gateways. I’ve already seen some resentment to the idea from Full License holders on the internet. 73, Tom, M7MCQ.
It is a complete mess Tom. I do hope that OFCOM give some clarity around this. There are not even notes to point people at the relevant sections!
It would be interesting to see if I could enable AMS on the existing repeater [GB7TM running on a DR-2X]. A 70 cm repeater so already frequency cleared for unattended use. It has been on the air for 5 plus years and is running in digital only mode. The output power is 3.6 W.
Personally I really don't like AMS. It can be a real pain and is open to abuse. Just my 2d :)
Tom i have no issue with AMS , the problem experienced in the past is when told NOT to use VW because certain "Mickey Mouse" users cannot hear the conversation but as AMS and VW are part of Fusion I don't see a problem. At the end of the day this video is greatly appreciated and further evidence that NWFG are only in the infancy of experimentation and I look orward to more of the same. 2M0JVR.@@NorthWestFusionGroup t
Interesting useful video, thank you Ian.
Cheers Ray!
Interesting that it comes with 5 meters of ribbon cable to use as radials, but 1/4 wave for 40 meter band should ideally be 10 meter radials.
It's a policy at our repeater that's worth sharing: "before disconnecting your radio from WiRES-X, please return the repeater's node back to its own room. Press and hold the * until you hear a beep. Then you can disconnect WiRES-X at your radio. It's a courtesy thing. Like returning a wrench to it's owner, not leaving it on your workbench."
Well presented Ian followed 100%, now to video 2 😉- M7JVH John
Thanks John :)
I am using a tablet and downloaded wires-x software, but it's not working properly. in android, it shows errors how to extract data from gip files. Please help me
Wires-X will only run under Windows
I have a ftm100dr into the hri 200 and am using my ft5dr handheld to get into wires x. My external antenna should be plugged into the ftm100dr correct? My handheld should be hitting my antenna plugged into the "donor" radio right?
“Even Yorkshire” 😂
Thanks Ian. just confirming i watched this video 😂
Splendid clear explanation, thanks
Hey Ian great info mate on the video....I want to ask you your interpretation or view of the cross band repeat function that can be found on many a radio eg the ft400 and a tyt mobile rig i have....I'm a M7 licence holder and fancy using a ht in and around the house communicating to a radio in the shack thats on cross band repeat transmitting through a bigger better higher antenna....many thanks mate for your views...speak soon on the air. 73's
Hi there. No, you can't I'm sorry. Even a full licensee cannot without a NoV. This is simply because you are, in effect, creating a repeater that others can use.
Hi everone, just a question I have the FTM400 Connected to my PC and use it as a hotspot for my FT3D. But I have the 400 connected to an external antenna and the question is can I do this.
Currently, the answer to this is no. You could put it on a dummy load so that you could use it around the house but it cannot be used in such a way that could allow other amateurs to use it.
Thanks Ian 👍
Superb Video Ian thank you. It's good to know that my Friday Night AllStar net operating practices are in check but still I found this video interesting and I'm happy that I do what is in the topic :) Keep up the great work 2e0wfl
Yikes - Firm ERR when powering up after Main firmware upgrade FTM-400XDR (AUS) from ver 2.2 to 4.5. Radio makes the usual three tones but remains on YAESU Firm ERR screen. Turns off in usual manner but does nothing else. Used the correct file, followed correct procedure, including pre-loading supplied USB-Serial driver for SCU-20 on Windows 10 laptop. Laptop and radio both supplied from fully charged batteries. Everything went as expected, including receiving firmware update is complete dialogue box. I thought maybe a corrupt download or unzip, so downloaded again and started from scratch but same result. The radio is bricked?
Oh dear! Did you make sure to use the correct firmware for your radio? They do vary
@@NorthWestFusionGroup Says AUS on the FTM-400XDR box label, loaded the appropriate AUS file, twice. No other file was used. Not looking good.
@@BentConrod you remembered to throw the switch back?
@@bayamateurradiogroup Yes, both times.
@@NorthWestFusionGroup Good news! I contacted the local (Australian) Yaesu service technician. The problem was known to the him, he advised me to load the USA firmware instead. The radio is working again!! 👍
This is an outstanding video. It's clear, concise and free from a lot of extraneous fluff. I was able to upgrade my 400 - and it was the easiest upgrade I've ever done thanks to the video. 73. Gavin K6GAV
Thankyou so much Gavin! It makes it all worthwhile if someone is helped by the videos. 73 Ian
I am not againts digital modes, I simply don't like when we have the internet in the middle
Very informative this Ian thanks for the video. My HRI200 arrived today and there would have been a lot of frustration at my shack if I had not first seen this. Keep up the good work :) Dan 2E0WFL
I'm glad it helped Dan :)
Good video Ian. Good reminder. I'll test the 70cm hotspot on lowest setting and its supplied aerial again. XYL's Ford Fiesta doors can't be opened when TG91 is busy and thats 6m away through a wall but on the drive. Can't blame the Ford as we are also non-primary users. Hotspot TX may need a bit of attenuation. That's what Amateur Radio is about, you can experiment to make sure your equipment complies. G7UAY
Thanks Dave, I hope you sort it!
Well produced video. It does us no harm to be reminded about good operational practice from time to time. Thank you Ian.
Thanks Ray
Great show thanks for the information keep up the great work de 2e0ree
Much appreciated Andy.. Thanks :)
Excellent video Ian, I don't recall getting a copy of the bandplan with the old BR68, certainly there was a copy of the schedule with BR68, that indicated what bands, and power levels and the geographical restrictions we were permitted and not permitted to use. The oddity about Simplex Internet Gateway NoV's is that the wording for an Intermediate doesn't change, it still says 'Full Licence' on the cover letter. Ofcom decided to leave it that way!
Meh! Picky picky :)
Very informative and professional presentation. I hope this helps to dispel all the myths - it's a very common question. Keep up the good work. -Dave M0LMN
Thanks a lot Dave :)
Excellent Ian absolutely excellent. Albert EI7II.
Glad you enjoyed it Albert :)
Why do rx only igates require an nov. Surely there is no tx, so you can install an igate without any form of licence?
It's useful to know. The last thing you want is a TX iGate right next to you. If you have a NoV, that can be avoided
