Why Metroid: Other M is MUCH Better in Japan!
Просмотров 12 тыс.21 день назад
Metroid: Other M might just be the most hated game in the Metroid franchise and a lot of that has to do with the portrayal of everyone's favorite bounty hunter Samus Aran. But what if I told you the game never intended to depict her that way at all? A lot of Metroid: Other M was during localization, so much so that I was able to create an entire video talking about it! #metroid #metroidotherm #...

The Miracle of Metroid Prime's Success

Metroid Prime Remastered is considered one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch, but if you thought the success of the game was a guarantee, you're dead wrong. With development troubling Metroid Prime 4 as well, I think it's as good as time as any to look at the development at the original Metroid Prime and how it's an absolute miracle the game, and Retro Studies as a whole, came out as goo...

I’m happy you chose the phazon suit as number 1. Tbh that has always been my favorite. It looks insanely badass. My number 2 would be the light suit.

This post is to clarify some things only, not to discredit the research time and subjetive opinions. The PED suit was not chozo-hybrid tech, it was just slapping on the garbage from the federation, that's why it clashes with her design, it isn't sleek nor really ergonomic it is just an exo-exo-skeleton. Sure it is tailor made for the chozo varia suit but it ISN'T part of the varia suit The base Dread suit is the realized final 3D hi-res version of the Fusion suit, the Fusion suit is a stripped down version of the power suit, that's why it lets Samus hang on ledges instead of requiring the power grip from Zero mission or Prime 3. The Dread suit in the flashbacks is the final Fusion suit with varia+ice invulnerability and the Metroid suit only kills the X parasite on contact, otherwise it needs Samus to claw the being to absorb their energy like she does with Raven Beak. My fave is the Final Dread suit after Samus learns to control the metroid power when she absorbs Quiet Robe X Edit: "X parasite on contact"

There's a whole big story to why Other M ended up as bad as it is. It all started with Sakamoto, the man who directed Super Metroid in 94, was surprised to see his game more popular in America than in Japan. When the N64 came out, other Nintendo franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Star Fox made the jump to 3D, but Sakamoto couldn't figure it out, especially because he wanted make a game that would appeal to a Japanese audience more than an American one. With the GameCube approaching release, Nintendo exec Miyamoto tasked the newly acquired Retro Studios in Texas with making a 3D Metroid game. Sakamoto was not happy about this since he believed he was the leader of Metroid and didn't like foreigners working on what he felt was his IP. He immediately got to work on Metroid Fusion, confident that Metroid fans would be more excited for a sequel to Super than they would be a 3D Metroid game made by a rookie studio; he even made sure Fusion came out the day before Prime to try and sabotage their sales. Much to his dismay, Prime set a franchise record and was sold on over 13% of all GameCubes. Learning that Retro was working on a sequel, he quickly got to work on remaking the original Metroid into Zero Mission and once again intended to release his game right before the next Prime, but Prime 2 ended up getting delayed and went on to sell well enough to greenlight a third game. Sakamoto got to work on Dread for the DS, hoping to have something to challenge Prime 3, but alas the DS couldn't handle his ideas involving the EMMIs, so he had nothing in 07 when Echoes released. He wanted to make a 3D Metroid as an ultimate victory over the Prime Trilogy, but Nintendo didn't have the right kind of devs that could make the game he imagined. Nintendo let him pick a Japanese studio to make it with him, so he picked Team Ninja for their Ninja Gaiden games. Over three years, development was relatively smooth, but even the Team Ninja devs questioned why they weren't using a nunchuck for a 3D game, but Sakamoto insisted on using just the Wii remote to make players feel like they were playing an NES. When asked in an interview if Sakamoto had played the Prime games, he said no, and he said the Prime games weren't canon. Kinda odd that he wouldn't bother touching the games that brought Metroid up to modern standards, don't you think? He wouldn't understand why people liked the Prime games, nor the kind of character that Samus was in those games. Well, we saw how much of a disaster Other M was across the board. The controls were horrible, the gameplay was too simple, and the story was an abomination. Samus was written like a middle schooler thirsty for the approval of an old teacher, and Adam was the most incompetent and abusive leader in recent entertainment, yet the story tried to paint Adam as this great guy. It all ended up being Sakamoto making Adam a self-insert character to represent that Metroid belonged to him and nobody else. The man went nuts in trying to dethrone Retro Studios and their games and ultimately failed HARD, so hard the franchise was put on ice. Thankfully, Nintendo execs have pretty much forced him to acknowledge Prime was canon and to go back to the series' roots when he worked with Mercury Steam to remake Metroid 2, and thankfully Dread ended up being pretty good. Prime 4 is still going to be the best game in the franchise though, and I don't think he's going to let that slide without another fight.

I think this video just shows how insanely good Samus' suits have been over the years, pretty much any suit could be any placement and it's fair, her suits are just good. I personally love the Dark Suit especially since it may contain Chozo + Ing tech as its design seems very similar to Ing Guardians. I'm not a big fan of the Gravity suit as I often feel that it's upgrade could just be inherent to her kit like how Varia gives heat resist in a lot of games and in several games it's just a lazy color swap though Dread Gravity passes the vibe test. I also don't like Zero Suit mostly because of the fan service. Samus is so freaking BA and it just feels wrong to have her in such a sexually suggestive outfit. I'm in Game Design right now and I've always hated how many BA female characters are so heavily sexualized it has bothered me for years now and so I try to not sexualize BA female characters whenever possible.

Whatever your opinion on the Light and Dark suits, I feel like future Samus Armour designs official or fan-made should take the risks Prime 2 specifically did in terms of making wholly unique suits because Prime 2’s suits to me just feel the most stand out of the series while also making Prime 2 as a whole into an aesthetically standout entry in the franchise. Of course, I feel any official designs should take into account both the story purpose and environmental aesthetic of each suit. Finding the Gravity Suit underwater just feels oddly perfect due to that purple colour scheme. You get the Dark Suit in the middle of the game where the threats pile up with the Dark Aether air still being toxic to Samus, where the Light suit is a relief from all that and a hope for Samus to defeat her dark counterpart. Then you have the Metroid Suit looking all gnarly because, while it is this source of great power, it is also chaotic and indiscriminately destructive, putting Samus in jeopardy when she wants to use her ship to escape, of which such attributes are reflected in that gnarly design.

Stupid question but does simply switching the language to Japanese and using Ensligh subtitles use the Japanese script or will I have to find a Japanese version of the game because I'm curious to try the game with the original dialouge. I always thought that 90% of the issues I had with Other M was just removing the box that says "Samus has decided not to use missles without Adams authorization."

I did not get to play Metroid Prime until 2005, and that was after I played Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. At that point in time, it was next to impossible to find Metroid Prime in stores, so I had to buy a used copy from online. When I got to play it, I almost felt like my mastery of Metroid Prime 2 dampened the wow factor it could have gotten from me, but since then, I still hold Metroid Prime as the reason why Metroid fans are as amazing as they are today. I cannot wait to get my hands on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. I will not miss it this time.

Been a fan of Metroid since 1989. As far as I am concerned Other M isn’t canon. I tried my best to enjoy it. I hadn’t read any reviews but my god I hated the game so much I couldn’t complete it. I have never hated a game, or movie with the intensity I loathe Other M. There is nothing good about it. It’s boring to play, it doesn’t feel like Metroid, doesn’t play like Metroid and the way the narrative treats Samus is a straight up insult.

I rather believe that the Japanese tried to imagine a Samus with a teenage mentality who never questions herself but who always blames others, they made her like that to please the West where others imagined something more realistic with a mature Samus who takes a step back from her past actions and who learns a lesson from them, it's much better like that I think. The fact that she is more sensitive does not take away her badass side, on the contrary it is her kindness that keeps her on the right path and makes her a fair and good person, strength without values and wisdom makes you a heartless monster who can allow himself the worst unimaginable atrocities possible as with what is currently happening with the Palestinians in Palestine. So yes we have the image of a Samus who never speaks but who rushes into the heap without caring except that it is not real, she is not a machine, she is a person before all and the people who believed the opposite are just irrational, in addition the official mangas also demonstrate the human side of Samus so the problem of the disappointment of many fans is themselves because they created a false image of Samus.

My first impression of Samus was that she was badass, but she definitely hides her vulnerability and kindness from others. In Other M we're getting something very close to what I imagined Samus is like. I never thought Samus as an adult person, because she spared life to the most dangerous life form in the universe and created unnatural bond between human and bioweapon. I felt that was so messed up and adult for Nintendo game. So yeah, Samus in Other M being a child who wears a mask of adult is quite compelling in my opinion and shows complexity of her psychology.

Actions speak louder than words. I never understood why fans claim Samus to not be acting of her own accord when she only had TWO things to turn off in the first place (Missiles and Bombs). Everything else, she left off herself before she even knew Adam was on the ship. You always have to keep an open mind when looking at a script that wasn't originally in English. Being a Mega Man fan who had to correct in his head for such gems as "Reploid Research Lavatory," I so habitually consider tone and emphasis to be flexible that a lot of these translation differences come off as trivial. Even the "Lady" thing, considering that Samus obviously has mixed feelings in both versions, and also faces similar teasing from Anthony, who she is otherwise on good terms with. Besides melodramatic delivery I also had no issue with Ian; I thought the game presented Samus as someone who matured in her perception while still holding to her original principles. In short, her actions communicated to me EXACTLY what this video describes the Japanese script as (and even in English she does assert herself in monologue while reminiscing with Anthony, that if it happened again, she would risk herself to save someone else, because it's who she is). And I love the Ridley battle. Thing about mental anxiety is that there is such a thing as being caught off-guard. The "Pokemon evolution" approach exists specifically to keep Ridley's appearance a surprise, not only to Samus but to Adam and the scientists as well. The Space Pirates in Other M are stated to be no more, so there should be no one left to clone Ridley. Samus thought she'd closed that chapter of her life, only for him to reappear by freak accident. Where the scene faltered was metaphorically shifting Samus's appearance to a child. This is not a common trope in the west (and may be falsely likened to the cartoon image of shrinking in your seat when your boss is chewing you out), and the scene would have been much better served with a full-on flashback, more akin to the commercial.
