THE BEST honing guide? Review of Veritas MK 2 vs Hongdui HD29 - chisel and plane sharpening [0102]
In this video we put the two best sharpening jig, or honing guides, on the market against one another. Who will come out as the victor? Is China now producing higher quality tools than the West?

Thank you, May The Vise Be With You.
Let us hope so :-D Thanks for watching and commenting.
This might sound silly Clint, but do you find yourself holding your breath a lot while carving? I, quite honestly, hold my breath while your cutting - I feel very engaged, like I need to be helping you concentrate. I know it's bonkers but it's just how it takes me... Cheers mate.
Thanks mate! I’m glad you find the vidoes and projects engaging :-) Cheers and thanks for stopping by.
Hi, very good explanation, I have bought the same saw after seeing your video. I dont understand how to fix saw blade alignment ! how many screws did you loosen before hitting with the hammer. Thank you for your share ^^
Hi! You loosen 3 screws most of the way, all the corners except 1, leave that one tight-ish. That allows the table to pivot on the screw you left tightish. If you get confused, put a piece of paper on a table and hold one corner with a finger, then try to pivot it around that finger. Cheers and thanks for watching.
You pay 50 euro at this tool and espect to be like one bosh at 200 euro. Really?
I expect any tool I purchase to perform to a certain standard no matter the cost. Specifically what to compare i to is another matter. That being said I have had good experiences with several cheap tools. The problem with this tool is that it doesn’t even perform as a cheap tool. It is basically worthless.
Nice setup
Thanks. It’s quick and dirty, but it works in a small space.
Very informative and balanced review. I have been looking at both of these trying to decide which one to buy. Love your sense of humour👍
Thanks mate! I’m really glad you appreciate the effort.
My guide on mine is not square so pretty much useless, slop in the jaws aswell on the hongdui.
That’s sad to hear. Did you return it?
Hello, what is your experience with the router after 2 years? I'm about to buy one, but I'm a bit discouraged by the one star reviews at Amazon who talk of serious quality issues.
What quality issues are those? A knob fell off on mine due to the vibrations, but I just put it back on and secured it with lock tite. Other than that the router has been fantastic. Mind you, I am a hobby user, so the router doesn’t get as much use as in a professional shop. Also, you get 12mm / half-inch collets for these very powerful machines. If you go for a standard router lift, you’ll need a smaller machine that is less powerful.
It would be interesting to put the chisel back in the guide, blue the end and see if the guide gives good repeatable alignment
Yeah. That would be a cool test. And it should stay the same, even if the chisel is not perfect. By the way, I have received the extension jaws. And it looks like you can use them with normal chisels as well. Super grip :-)
Ill save up and buy the parf jig🙄
Yeah. After going through all of this, that is what I’ll donthe next time as well. Or CNC it.
Nice
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the video. I just ordered this saw last weekend and am really looking forward to it. Any chance you call let me know how easy or difficult it is to move/maneuver with the built in wheels?
I am glad you liked the video. The saw is fairly easy to move on the built in wheels. However, without using a side support, the saw is not that stable. So, you must either fix it some fashion, or have to deal with the accessory legs. I keep mine fixed to a plywood sheet on the floor.
@@NomadMakes Awesome, thanks for the info and the quick reply :)
Happy to help, mate. Thanks for watching.
I watched knowing I'm unlikely to buy either of these higher end tools - hey, anyone who's seen my channel knows I'm nowhere near your level of cabinet-making - but I put time aside to settle down and watch carefully. I really enjoyed watching! This is a very entertaining video for anyone who likes workshop adventures. Cheers Gøran, this is a great job. Cheers mate and love to you both.
Thanls for watching mate! I am really glad you liked the video and found it entertaining.
Very in depth video fella, good stuff!
Thanks mate! Appreciate it. Cheers.
Aren't nice sharp planes the most satisfying thing ever?
Yeah. I love both the feeling and the sound it makes :-)
Make a tapering piece of maple with a soft taper going from 1/2 inch all the way to 2”- over about 2’. This can be used on the side of the vice that is “racking” to make the other side super stable
That sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the advice. And thank you for watching and commenting. Cheers.
Back the pine with maple- soft jaws with hard maple is what I use- best of both worlds. I did this because the maple was marring my pine and my poplar boards. So using just a 1/2 inch board of pine with a 3/4 inch thick piece of maple that were glued together and laminated to my front jaw- the back of the jaw is already red oak- which is soft enough.
Thank you for sharing more good advice. Maple is not that readily available here in Norway. Do you have a suggestion for another species? Will white oak do?
Wow beautiful Amazing wow nice sharing video I really like it keep it up 😊😊❤stay new friend done ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Thanks a alot :-)

Thanks for checking in, Mark! Silk drawers will be comming up next in this series ;-)
A jövő héten vagy talan az után én is meg kapom ezt a kis gépet. Néztem néhány bemutatót róla, nekem egy kisebb ékszernek tűnik! Köszönöm a bemutatót! Romániából!
For the price it is a good saw. If you want to do small detail work with it i suggest using a zero clearance plate.
Boy, that saves a lot of messing about with edge-banding or such. But wait... Window seat? Window seat? Why have I not been informed of this before?
Hehe. It’s all on my insta, dear friend ;-) Thanks for looking in again. Cheers.
thank you for the advice 🎉
Thanks for looking in brother ;-)
Most ingenious. You'll show it in action, of course?
Yes of course! I am, however, so far behind on video editing that it will probably on a friday. :-)
Excellent advice mate. I always had my radial arm saw blades sharpened rather than replaced and it always saved a good chunk of change. Cheers Gøran.
I gather I can get at least 1-2 more sharpenings out if these baldes before the are too worn down. Perhaps the first sharpening takes off a bit much?
@@NomadMakes The blades I had sharpened were old school! Very hefty - they certainly survived a lot more than three sharpenings. Newer products might not have enough beef on them to multiple sharpenings. Sorry I can't be any more helpful than that.
@MarkMcCluney No worries. I’ll just have to see. At this rate I’m only sharpening once every second year. So if the blades can be sharpened a few times, they will last for years. Looks like good value to me :-)
I like the new 'Vader-meets-Woody Allen' look.
I had to re-watch to get this one. But it only took 1 second. LOL!

Brother , God and Saviour Jesus Christ Loves You. And I want to Preach to You About Our eternity when we will leave this Life. We will Go either to Heaven or To Hell . See Brother we have all sinned and live in sin if we examine our life. And a Person really has fear of Death when our Death is near. And Bible Says all Sinners will Go to Hell . So How to Get out of Hell ? The Answer is That We have all Sinned and Condemned to Hell and we need The Saviour who can save us from Hell. The Loving God of Universe Became Man and was Born to Virgin Mary and His Name is Jesus. Jesus lived a Perfect Life that we couldn't live . Many people Know Jesus Died on The Cross to save us but they do know what it means. The wages of Sin is Death . And What Jesus Did was that You and I broke the Law and Jesus Paid the Fine on the CROSS . Means He Took our Death and On Third day Rose from The Death and Says to Everyone and Everywhere To REPENT OF THEIR SINS and BELIVE In Jesus and Get Saved . Brother I love You , But God loves You Infinity More. Humble Yourself to Him and Belive in What He did for You and Be saved from Hell. Our Life is Short in the World but the Gift of God is Eternal Life Through Christ Jesus our God and Saviour. No Other God is there but Only One God , The Triune God of The Bible who can Save You. Repent and Belive in Him. God loves You.
Здравствуйте, подскажите почему лента тормозит при нагрузки
The google translation is a bit strange. But I think you are asking why the blade slows down under load. This is because the motor is very weak. This saw is best suited for lighter work.
@@NomadMakes спасибо за ответ. Google переводит ужасно. Но вы меня поняли правильно. Пила доску толщиной в дюйм пилит очень плохо. Буду решать эту проблему. 🤝
I am glad it helped. Thanks for watching and commenting.
May I also suggest you get a ripping blade. Look for a low TPI number. That relieves some of the stress from the motor.
Hei!
Du kan se meg rippe noe 25mm eik i denne videoen: Scandinavian Furniture Design - Credenza - Cutting and Milling to S4S EP02 [0080] ruclips.net/video/FhfCq8BA45I/видео.html Så kan du tenke deg når du skal resawe.
Do not buy the nuendo earplugs! I'm a musician and have owned 2 pairs. The first pair fell apart in the plastic after using them about 5 times. I got a pair of new ones that was supposed to be upgraded, but the same thing happened to them. The idea is great but they are crap quality i'm afraid (and expensive). But I liked this video for the Metabo :) Thanks.
I’m sad to hear that you had a bad experience with the ear plugs. But of course happy that you liked the video :-) Cheers and thanks for watching.
Seiko SKX009 ? I like a lot. Oh, this is a great install video too.
Yeah! It’s the original J-version on a bond style zulu strap. It’s my beater and daily driver :-) Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers.
@1:38 Dear Lord Vader, I bought this Metabo, watched a few KS/KGS216M reviews, no one mentions that if you remove these extensions @1:38 you can "click" both extension table parts together to put underneath extremely long work pieces. Bet you didn't know that...(feeling chocking in the neck by Lord Vader, gasping for air) Yours Sincerely, an incompetent Imperial Officer. Also, I made this the most important goal in life, to share this handy little hack haha. 😉😂😉 Cheers!
Wow. I never knew or tried that. Mine mostly live in the mobile miter station. Have to check that tidbit now. Fun commet btw. Lol. Perhaps Baby Vader will keep you on :-)
@@NomadMakes Haha! You're welcome. Yeah, Metabo mentions it in the descriptions: "Extendable table width extensions, also removable to put underneath extremely long work pieces" That's it. But I saw, no pun intended, one small picture on the box..THE box as in UNboxing the box, it is all about what is inside the box, not outside the box winkwink, There is one picture where the man is sawing a long work piece with at the end a little "stool" to support the work piece. First thing I thought was "Oh that's handy!" We all know we are using ALL sorts of things with the right hight to support the end of a long work piece!! (Grrrrrr!) Thinking it was a Metabo accessoire i.e extra. But immediatley thought the part looked familiar. Turns out you can click both extensions (left&right) together to create this handy little stool. Now, I bought this saw recently (anno 2024) But from all the video's I watched, Metabo have not updated this mitre saw for the last 8 years. So maybe it doesn't work on all models. Older models you have to use a screw to lock the extensions. Mine works with a little ball you have to push to get it through the holes. It is hard to show you the picture on the Metabo box. Just Google (image) Metabo KGS 216 M images and scroll down, there is one photo of "D&M Tools" that shows you the photo we're talking about. It is a (half of the ) man sitting on his knees with the stool in front of the photo (You're welcome lol) Long story short...😉🤣 From the Netherlands I wish you all the best, thanks for the great review, enjoy your weekend, Cheers mate🍻🍺🍻
@eddiezweers4158 Yeah. Thas was a really cool little tip. I made «the Doomsday box» :-) A litte support for long pieces. But then eventually made a mobile miter station for it. Cheers and thanks for watching.
P.S. Dear Lord Vader, I found my manual, If you still have it, page 2, bottom right: "How to make a Baby Vader Stool" Cheers Anakin mate. (getting choked by the neck again for being to informal) I'm sorry My Lord! hehe
@eddiezweers4158 The manual is written by The Dark Side my young apprentice. Good work. Feed the anger you feel when reading a Metabo manual!
Casually skipping the part of the transport screw and jumping straight to the boring part and shazam you are able to move the blade….
Are you happy with the saw so far?
Wow wood yay
Lots of wood :-)
What to buy? Budget can go up a bit? Researching and researching but difficult! Any recommendation would be highly appreciated
What size of lumber are you looking to joint?

That was a very enjoyable watch. It's fun to have a simple little project with no complications; we can just have fun and larks, enjoy what we're re doing and remember why we have workshops in the first place. Great vid Goran, I enjoyed that a lot.
Thanks a lot Mark! Yeah, I needed this one for my mental health :-) I knid of miss doing small workshop projects as well. I’ll have to make room for that going forward I think. Thanks for checking back in. Cheers.
If you let them know about the missing Acethey will not lose as much money at your gambling house!!😊goodluck
It’s my secret ;-)
Maybe you have the speed of the drill set to high for the drill bit you are using.
Do you mean the forstner bits or the paddle bits?
What made you choose a biscuit jointer instead of a domino? A domino can do alignment as well as other things but a biscuit jointer can only do one?
Well. The price to be honest. I may purchase a Domino at some point, but my next big projects are a window seat and some built-ins. And for that the biscuit jointer will be perfectly adequate. That being said, if I were trying to make money doing this, I would have gotten a Domino.
Looks good. How long has this project taken?
Man. An enternity it feels like. I guess we are looking at almost 3 years now, from the first scribbles on a napkin :-)
That slow-closing hinge is the business! (Does anyone say that anymore?)
You do at least ;-) Yeah. I really like those hinges.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the saw now that you’ve had it for a few years. The F3 is on my short list.
I absolutely love the saw. It is, however, not perfect. And depening on which side of the Atlantic you are on, and on your budget - there may be better alternatives. Pros: - Quick change riving knife/blade guard - Motor brake (required in Europe so may not apply to US models) - Poweful/Heavy etc. Cons: - Dust collection - The fence is adequate, but there are better solutions out there
@@NomadMakes Thank you for your feedback! I’m in Texas and able to score an F3 for about $2200USD after taxes and shipping. The Harvey I’m looking at is $3500. The Sawstop is…well, too expensive. The fence is such a critical feature that your comment is all I need to read, especially with the new Big Eye fenced from Harvey. Appreciate the feedback so much!
Nice to hear you found it helpful. Good luck with your purchase.
Hei.
I bought the 7492 and love it
Nice to hear. That seems like a great saw.
What is your thoughts now I am now torn between this and the Dewalt p35. Obviously the advantage is this machine as you get the shelix cutter instead of spending over 1k on the dewalt. Anyone in the comments please feel free to give me your opinion as well. Great video 👍
I am not familiar with the Dewalt p35 and nothing shows up on a google search. Are you sure about the model? Axminster has a new version of this that they are selling. And the main selling point for this machine, apart for the spiral cutter, is the depth lock. It really is great at preventing snipe.
@NomadMakes Dewalt DW735 Heavy-Duty 13" Three Knife, 2 Speed Planer (Only 220V 60HZ) Sorry no idea where I got p35 from 🤣🤣🤣
That is the 4 poster. Well, I only know the Axminster machine, and is has next to no snipe and the helical head is fantastic - especially when you have grain going every which way. Not an induction motor though, so with a helical head you have to do shallow passes. But that looks like it is the same on the Dewalt. Hard to give a recommendation. But you will have to mod the Dewalt with a bew cutter head. Chip collection looks better on the Dewalt. Let me know what you decide.
Caustic soda is pretty scary stuff, full stop. Take care mate and keep us posted.
It is not really to bleach the wood. It is to prevent it from yellowing with time. I guess the pigments help a bit. But there is a lot of titanoxide in the soap that comes next. Good covering eyeprotection is a no-brainer for this lye at least ;-)
