In this video, I’m taking a look at a few clips from the series to see how realistic Emily’s challenges are based on my experiences as an expat / immigrant.

Why the results of the Dutch elections scare me
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Elections were held in the Netherlands last week, and voters awarded a total of 37 seats out of 150 to the far-right party (PVV) led by Geert Wilders. They are anti-EU, anti-immigration, they are pretty radically anti-Muslim, and they plan to abolish the Dutch climate law and leave the Paris Agreement on climate change. Normally, most major parties would stay away from forming a coalition with ...

  • @decnijfkris3706
    @decnijfkris3706 2 дня назад

    Many times I see the east europeans jealous of Belgians. The wealth we have is a result of generations of Belgians saving up money for a house to give through to their children. It did not come falling from the trees you know. We paid for our generous social system you can take part in. After world war 2 the accounts of all Belgians were set on zero. The operation GUTT skimmed off all assets of the Belgians in one stroke. You have to learn about our history instead of ridiculizing it. East europeans tend to play the smart guys, they present themselves as being more rational. Well now you history proofs just the opposite. I have the impression from all people of eastern europe Ukrainians are the most sain and the most adapted to our society. A good advice do not bite all too much the hand that feeds you. It will kick you in the ass. Anyways you are still very welcome.

  • @decnijfkris3706
    @decnijfkris3706 2 дня назад

    I have seen coming many east europeans to Belgium and they all have way too high expectations. For us Belgians you are cheap labour, you can do cleaning jobs or you can work in construction. Jobs that we don't want to do. Then east europeans have a socialist mind. They tend to take advantage of all social amenities and in fact do not contribute financially to it. A low earner does not bring tax money to the state on the contrary average Belgians have to pay for them. We don't search houses on Facebook. We go to a real estate agency and pay the price they ask for a relative good and legal service. The trouble you are experiencing is caused by yourself. By law immigrants get exactly the same job and housing opportunities as Belgians. So the discrimination you are talking of is merely caused by your attitude. I see it takes years before east europeans get integrated in our society. Another thing with east europeans is that they totally mismanage their income. How many times I have seen they spend their money on luxury they just can't afford. So for me you are, just as any other stranger welcome in my country on the condition that you learn our languages (multiple as constitutionally set) and you pay taxes. It is not normal that east europeans can skip all labour rules and set up fake companies that pay zero taxes. We Belgians are limited in entrpreneurship due to all kind of regulations and laws. Just follow the rules. Immatriculate your cars in Belgium and pay taxes to our state. Do not flee to your home country in order to get free health care, buy products in Belgium and not in Hungary. If you do that you will integrate, now you are a citizen of no country. I know you very well. It is all up to you. In no way you are a victim of scamming or of any discrimination.

    Thanks Nora for your feedback about your Belgian experience! I’m born and raised in Liege and speak French. I left my country I was 24 yo to live in Egypt. I stayed 12 years and then I lived 5 years in Los Angeles 🇺🇸. Now I live in New Orleans Louisiana in the 🇺🇸 as well. I share your feelings about being an expat. I’ve been well surrounded when I lived in Cairo but felt very lonely during my LA experience. Now living in New Orleans, things are better but culturally we remain always different whatever you do because your roots are different. However, while being patient I found ways to socialize with locals and even date. The key is flexibility and understanding the local codes. I am a person who enjoys and appreciate all different cultures and traditions. I think it’s a lot about the mindset of being an expat to know where you’re from while embracing your new local codes and culture. It’s not always the most easy thing to do but it’s very entertaining in many aspects. I’m happy you like living in Belgium and I know that all you described as struggles, I faced them myself there and even in the US. I’d be glad to discuss this further with you. Btw I am a French teacher, I could help. And no worries, I am not a scammer or trying to find a new date. See you maybe! 😀

    I’m watching all your vids on Belgium and I’m sorely tempted to scout it out as an alternative to the US, at least for a few years. You’ve got Margaret Atwood on your bookshelf, you highlighted the good beer, and you captured some of the most beautiful shots of the country. It reminds me a bit of my time in Switzerland but even more stunning.

    Good video but... I think your realistic cost price's are litlle low.. appart of your appartement's rent everything ells is allot more exepensife 😅 maybe its just me 🤷 Family with 2 kids we pay monthly: 1500€ down payment on our house. 250€ gas and electricity. 150€ phone and internet. 350€ downpayment car. +-200€ gas for car. 50€ water. 200-300€ food. 200€ kindergarden. 100€ toys. 200€ clothes 500€ saving account. Each kid 100€ x2 safing account. 100€ pension saving account. Whats remains is for fun 🙈. I make around 2.6k and my wife 2.5k after taxes. 160€ food cheques. 1 business car incl free gas. Free health insurance for the family. We are 29 and 31 years old. I think the majority of family's in belguim can relate to this monthly living situation 🤷 But then again i might be wrong.

      @@geldoffhuygelberghs6533 Compared with Italy and France, life in Belgium is indeed less stressful. But it is not easy to compare with my side, the exchange rate is not the same, the price is not the same. Your monthly gas, electricity, telephone and Internet charges are enough for me to last two years, and the monthly gas consumption is the same. My electricity bill is 0.13 euros per kilowatt hour, gas is 0.64 euros per cubic meter and gasoline is 1.1 euros per liter. Of course the same job earns only about 40%

Budapest is one of those European capitals that people don't really have a clue just how amazing the quality of life is there. It will be difficult for you, coming from Budapest, to find anywhere in Belgium that is half as good as there. Magyartól magyarnak. hahah

    Thanks for sharing this, I can really understand the incidents have caused upset which is really not nice. I hope it hasn't put you off living there too much. We lived in the Netherlands for 3 years in the early 1990s and in the space of a couple of weeks I got accosted by a gang on my way home from work and one of them was seriously trying to stab me but I outpaced him and my wife got her purse stolen when she was out shopping. It wasn't the deciding factor but it definitely contributed to our decision to move back to London very soon after. In many ways I wish we had stayed ... we'd have avoided Brexit and all the other rubbish things in UK. We really fancy buying a little base in Flanders for escaping to, we couldn't live there because of Brexit but I have done lot's of research and your warnings will certainly help keep our eyes open.

    You can't be an immigrant in the EU if you're from another EU member state. It's literally impossible to immigrate as a) you can't take the citizenship of another EU country if you already are one in a member state and b) the free movement principle removes any immigration formalities.

    • @hvhvgitaar
      @hvhvgitaar 2 дня назад

      You’re mixing things up. Migration is about changing your residence, which is not the same as taking on citizenship. If you move from your home EU country to another EU country you are still a migrant. You still need to register as a resident, but if it’s within the EU, and you have a job, you can register, and you have access to schools for your kids and to healthcare. Those are the rules for “free movement”.
