Who is Traveler and Paimon? Breakdown of Their Role in the Story
Paimon and Traveler have been together on a journey for almost 4 years. But we still know little about them and even less in terms of lore. Is there a way to explain their role? or what they represent? Or maybe is there something I missed there?

Genshin impact had tragic year during its run in Fontaine. As usual it did not escape any controversies. However this time the issues were much more noticeable as players were continuously more and more dissatisfied with the game. Lets see what exactly happened and what was the real reason behind those issues. Videos used are listed below. ruclips.net/video/IpU60E1Br_0/видео.html ruclips.net/vi...

    Interesting video. I like your conclusions, although personally I think I'm so critical of the Traveler it borders on "hate". To simply put, I think the Traveler and Paimon are a case of a gacha game that wants to "have its cake and eat it too." Basically- Traveler TECHNICALLY does have a personality. Both Lumine and Aether have minor differences in facial and physical animations in cutscenes and fighting styles. They also have their own voice lines with Paimon in their character profiles and this is where they have their own opinions. This is most evident in the Dainsleif quests. As you mentioned, the Caribert quest was easily the best quest to showcase the Traveler because they're actually by themselves. It can be argued that this is where you can find the bulk of their "personality" and "character." HOWEVER- absolutely none of this comes through in the actual game and story. None of the Aether or Lumine's personal quirks and opinions influence anything, not even how they treat other characters. They will, by default, treat everyone the same and react to every event the same. And, as you have stated, their personalities/conversations will always be handled by Paimon, who will also treat both of them the same. This is where my point of "have its cake and eat it too" comes in. Genshin's dev team wants a MC who is their own character BUT at the same time they want them to be enough of a blank slate that the player can still project themselves onto them. That kind of MC requires VERY smart writing (eg. Persona and arguably other SMT games) which Genshin doesn't have (yet.) The result (coming from a Genshin player who doesn't play games to self-insert) is an MC who feels so wishy-washy and, frankly, doesn't feel like they deserve half of the praise/affection they get from everyone else. That last statement sounds harsh, I know. But from my personal experience playing the game, that's how I feel and every time I hear a character praise the Traveler I can't help but roll my eyes. I am fine with the Traveler being a "witness/observer" because that ties into the overall themes of "fate vs coincidence" in the game's story. But one of my main problems with Genshin's writing is that the game wants them to be that, but at the same wants them to be deserving of so many characters respect/care/affection. I'd love to dive deeper into why I feel this way, but this is already an essay. TL;DR- good video, I liked your points.

    People who say “genshin is a children’s game” (tectone) are the kids who pretend like they’re adults ,by saying something is for kids and avoid it in order to look “cool” and think that they’re real “adults”. If you’re an adult shouldn’t you have the reading comprehension and patience to learn all about the games hidden lore and not rely on the game to feed up all of it to you with cool cutscenes just to keep up with your goldfish attention span.

    Fontaine sucked so much aside from the AQ, yeah the fortress of meropede was ehhhh. Sumeru AQ is still the best, Fontaine is the best for Furina, Neuvillette, and Navia. Arlecchino should have died tbh, or they should have released her as they conceptualised her rather than creating a slop quest that completely invalidates lore from previous WQs and makes them feel completely inconsequential. (Gendou Ringo quest.) I actually think their idea of Lyney et al escaping Arlecchino was a lot better than the schizo slop we got. Dismissing Scaramouche's lines as "rumours" when he distrusts Pulcinella (I could understand Dottore since they have beef and never got along, but Arlecchino?) and Childe misjusging someone (he is so friendly it is very OOC even accounting for his closeness with Pulcinella) is also insane. I'm hoping Natlan will actually be fun. It seems very promising, at least. ❤ I hope we see Dottore in Natlan and he is playable soon. As far as Natlan, it is primarily inspired by Latin America, and it is white US people who are upset about it, not even LatAm (I am Mexican, not -American, but actually Mexican.) Pretty much no one in LatAm Genshin community has any issue with Natlan and we are very excited for it, same with Sumeru, the majority of complaints are from US natives or Europeans who have very stereotypical and even racist notions of what Latin America and the Middle East are. There are people who are light-skinned in Latin America, and in the Middle East/Persia/India. If gringos consumed content from our countries instead of their Hollyweirdised versions of our culture, they would realise that we also are diverse, and not everyone looks like what they believe us to look like. I have zero idea why they keep trying to inject black people into Natlan either, it has always been based on Aztec/Mayan cultures primarily, with some other stuff like Hawaiian/Maui culture added in, but I don't see anyone complaining that Natlan isn't just Hawaii. Even the artefact set we got in Fontaine about Natlan is very clearly NOT remotely African, that is the United States (let's be honest, this isn't a global issue, the majority of the global community also doesn't give a shxt, this is why their "boycotts" always fail, because it's an issue that only interests woke US people, the same kind who use the term "Latinx," and they just want drama, they don't want to listen -- if you try to explain it to them, they will just falsely assume and call you white [further showcasing their ignorance on LatAm, which is a melting pot of people from various backgrounds/cultures, including Middle Eastern, if anything, I would expect to see Sumeru influence in Natlan more than African, if we are going to base it on the real world, we have zero connection to black African culture, but we have a pretty strong connection to Arabic culture, and a lot of mixture with them, even one of Mexico's most famous billionaires is of ME descent, and my own heritage is partly Lebanese because there's a big ME community in Mexico. Black, on the other hand, not so much.... outside of places that border the West Indies and Brazil (due to Portuguese colonialism), you're not going to find black people, they are so rare that I thought as a child that they only lived in Africa until I moved to the US and obviously learned otherwise, but the point of that is to highlight how rare it is to see a black person in most of LatAM, particularly Mexico/Central America, which is where Natlan gets most of its influence from, so why should there be black people there? It is a silly expectation, and always was. Similarly, some person took some fandom fanart of the goddess Mavuika is based off [who is polynesian btw] and tried to claim SHE should be black, when the goddess is Polynesian and the people there are NOT blaack even remotely, they have the same skin tone as Mavuika does lmao. And yeah, Mavuika isn't white, that much is obvious when you compare her to Diluc or even Himeko from HSR/HI3, they DID make her darker and she looks brown, same with Xilonen (looks very Latina), and others. The only one I was shocked to learn was supposed to be Mexican is Chasca, to me she doesn't look Latina at all, but we don't know her story, could be a case like Thoma where she has mixed heritage, wouldn't shock me if she was mixed and somehow related to Rosaria lmao, considering they have similar hair colour. But Chasca aside, everyone else definitely looks the part to anyone who actually is or knows about LatAM, not just Hollywood films that depict derelict border towns where everyone's a narco and the hue is eternally set to a sickly yellow for some reason. If the wokes wanted to complain about bad representation, they should complain about that insteaed, not a game that actually brings out the positive and cool sides of our countries/cultures and has amazing characters that everyone is hyped for. TBH, the Arlecchino story quest controversy would have been a better thing to cover than the Natlan nontroversy, since the bad decisions made re: her story completely ruined/otherwise compromised key parts of the lore and game (previous WQs, Dottore to some extent since it was literally NEVER mentioned even by Freminet that he had any involvement with the HoTH, and it was just quickly put in there as a lazy way to make Arlecchino look better at his expense, which I don't appreciate [though at least he can get out of it easily because it was pretty much certainly a Segment who worked with Crucabena, not Zandik or even Omega, and we know they have distinct personalities, so whatever Segment it was, he is already dead, even if Arlecchino wishes to hold Zandik responsible for what his Segments do, it would be ridiculous IMO, since they are independent individuals, even if they function under a hive mind in terms of moniker, that would be like holding Arlecchino responsible for what Crucabena did because she was also called Arlecchino once. A preposterous premise.] But most of all, it tarnishes the Tsaritsa, as we don't even know Crucabena's motivations for becoming a Harbinger, or why she was given the task of raising orphans when she was actually just making her fight for her own amusement. She was literally just villainous for the sake of being villainous, and there isn't enough about her otherwise to make her anything but a scapegoat where all the past negative lore about Arlecchino could be mounted on and sacrificed, I think that's pretty bad writing. Likewise with Clervie, just one-dimensional, cheap emotional manipulation, to say nothing of the fact they even introduce Arlecchino in the Fontaine AQ livestream as "the Harbinger FROM Fontaine." And given we didn't have Perinheri drop until the patch preceding 4.6, it's obvious this was not because it's a huge lore bomb [it really isn't, and we've had insane lore drops from places like Delphi which are relevant to date, Signora's story since the beginning, possibly Capitano's as well, some of Dottore's backstory though a lot of his story is also under wraps rn, at least we have SOMETHING, though, and there are a bunch of books we've had since day 1 that are extremely relevant to the plot, so there is no reason to hold back Perinheri], but because they didn't know what direction to take Arlecchino in until then.

    • @fatuusdottore
      @fatuusdottore 6 дней назад

      Her lack of involvement/relevance in the Fontaine AQ also speaks volumes, and her SQ just made things so much worse. Pretty much the only reason anyone would defend that utter mess is because she has an anti-waifu design that basically is DEI Signora, or they're just immense simps who will overlook even the worst writing for the sake of their waifu [which is at least more understandable.] It is funny to me that she was very quickly forgotten despite how much Hoyo tried to market her and push her on us though, lmao, and they learned from the failures of Fontaine's designs that people want sexy characters. (Natlan cast is looking very beautiful, unlike most of Fontaine's women, the men in Fontaine didn't suffer as much, though appealing to the femcel demographic did NOT pay off for them, considering this has been the most controversial region in all of Genshin's history, and that's taking Inazuma's AQ issues and the censorship there into account, at least Inazuma itself was fun, Ei was well-written in the end [BOTH of her SQs saved her, though, if it had been just her AQ I could understand the criticism she gets, but the same people who think they can say Ei is badly written praise Arlecchino, who actually IS badly written, to such a degree she brings down other major characters with her story as discussed and needed two characters to exist solely for the purpose of making her look good, so something tells me it's not about the writing with them...] Like I said, the biggest problem with Arlecchino's SQ and character is tarnishing the Tsaritsa, because she clearly had to know about Crucabena and we are even given hints that she knew about her. Sure, she pardoned Arlecchino for offing her, but she still allowed that to happen in the first place, so that's far from being merciful when she had the power to simply stop Crucabena all along, lol. Ditto with Arlecchino accepting to become a Harbinger, shouldn't she hate the Fatui for Crucabena alone? And how could she even call the Tsaritsa merciful when everything she whinges about happened under her name/orders? She places more responsibility on Dottore, who had basically no say in what Crucabena did or not, than on her actual boss, but for us as the players, the Tsaritsa's role cannot be ignored if we are to condemn the former HOTH director, since the Tsaritsa clearly has power and it isn't a situation like with Nahida where they just put her away lmao. She is the one who calls the shots and every Harbinger has made this clear, from Dottore to Arlecchino herself, and even Pierro answers to her, so what gives? She doesn't have segments and she is the only Tsaritsa to run the Fatui, so its not like they can say it's the previous Cryo archon or something (which wouldn't make sense either, since her entire gripe is about Khaenriah.) They should have followed their original direction with Arlecchino and left other characters alone, it is not their responsibility to absolve her, and it created a LOT of problems especially for people who actually care about the lore. Hell, it's so bad that the SQ alone made me take the story less seriously as a whole, since they're just going to change something out of the blue or blame some other character every time they want to market some glubshitto, like they also did with Scaramouche (though at least that had more sense, since Dottore and him never got along, there were obvious signs of that since the beginning, the only gripe I have is scapegoating Dottore for things Scaramouche is responsible for doing, and the fact he doesn't really earn a redemption at all, he's just everyone's victim from Ei to Dottore to the Fatui, etc. despite being at least 400 years old, lol. Childish, terrible, petulant character that IMO didn't deserve to be playable, but that's just personal opinion, my point is at least there were some foundations to his backstory, even in artefacts we had prior to it, so it's not as egregious as Arlecchino's case. Also, we knew about Niwa and all that for a long time, due to Kazuha's story, it isn't like characters were made JUST for Scaramouche to be sympathetic [he isn't anyway], so objectively it is MUCH better writing, regardless of how I feel about him personally, it's just his redemption itself that needs work, if we're going off just tragic backstories, pretty much every Harbinger except Crucabena has one, so it's hardly unique. And yes, I expect Zandik to earn his redemption as well, as much injustice as he's been through in-game and outside of it, I would hope that he would earn his own redemption too, and not just be an eternal victim like these losers, though I'm pretty sure that's what's going to happen, he is far too capable and already quite complex, I cannot see him relying only on his backstory like the others, he will do great things as we've seen already in Sumeru's AQ, where, despite being more than capable of beating Nahida and forcefully taking the Gnosis, he is the ONLY Harbinger to never attempt to take a Gnosis by force (whether directly, like Signora -Venti, Childe - Zhongli [exuvia], Arlecchino - Furina, or through coercion, like Scaramouche holding us hostage in the Delusion Factory until Yae gives him the Electro Gnosis.) Dottore could have done the same, or Hell, held US hostage since he did put us to sleep, and threatened Nahida that way, but he isn't a thug who does things just for the sake of doing them and, despite what he is called to do for the Fatui, he isn't someone who likes to needlessly cause harm [the keyword being needlessly -- he tries to mitigate harm where possible, but he will put efficiency above tact for certain, however, he isn't Crucabena who simply likes to see people suffer nor is he Enjou who has no sense of loyalty and just does as he pleases, that concept was more manhua Dottore, who has obviously been retconned completely and could even be said to perhaps be a prototypical Segment, given his appearance and personality wildly differs from Zandik's.] Even considering his grudge against Sumeru and the Akademiya, at the ened of the day what he wanted and still wants is acceptance from them, he even says he chose not to end the traveller because Nahida "would never forgive him" if he did so. Why would he care what she would or wouldn't forgive if he had no emotional investment in Sumeru? Or even return to the Akademiya and prove himself there, to say nothing of signing his letters as 'the outcast,' and not The Doctor, meaning everything that happened to him in Sumeru is still fresh in his mind. Yet, despite that, he did not put anyone in Sumeru at risk, unlike Childe with Liyue Harbor and Scaramouche with Watatsumi Island [that, for some reason, gets blamed on Signora only, when it was both of them who cooperated in distributing the Delusions that would ultimately kill Teppei, not just her.]

      Long story short, Hoyo seems to not really know what they're doing with their writing for Fatui Harbingers, which is worrisome. If Arlecchino were someone of less importance than a Harbinger, like a Chiori, I could excuse the messy SQ, but she is kind of part of one of the most important factions in GI. It's inexcusable to have her SQ be completely sloppy, though the fact it was completely spoiled in a 7 minute animation is pretty comical, I won't lie. I get they want to show off animations now [and also, like I said, they had zero idea what to do with her and were trying to convince players into pulling her just in case they didn't play the SQ, if I'd to guess], though also the fight between Arlecchino and Crucabena may have been too graphic for in-game, certainly Clervie's death, so I can sort of understand the animation from that perspective, even if the story is utter slop that insults players' intelligence and tries to cheaply emotionally manipulate to such an audacious extent it'd make Scaramouche blush. I think THAT is a bigger issue than the Natlan nontroversy, personally, considering it actually compromises if not outright ruins a lot of the game's content/lore/drags important characters through the mud needlesssly just to market one forgettable unit who has played no relevant role whatsoever up till this point when she should shine by her own merit, US leftist political beliefs on the other hand have NOTHING to do with Genshin as a story, as it is a work of fiction, and the "boycott" drama has only allowed Beckies to be racist to Latinos who tell them they don't know what they're talking about and by their own political philosophies should be listening to our voices, lol. But they want blood and drama, it's the same thing as the Eula drama, the Hilichurl drama, the Sumeru drama, etc. Just noise and misconceptions, if not entirely malicious interpretations like Eula very clearly rejects her Lawrence heritage, yet they ignore that and call her awful things, learning literally nothing from the story itself. I mean, it's your video so you can choose to cover whatever you please, but don't act like it's Latinos who are behind this nonsense "boycott," or even "the global community." Be honest about it and say who it really is -- teenage beckies on Twitter and their woke ilk. There's a reason it's been such a failure, even by Genshin boycott standards, and that's because the people they're claiming to speak on behalf of don't agree with their fundamental premise, nor their strange idea that a region that represents Latin America with a strong emphasis on Mexico/Central America should have black culture, when we could not be less related, and is in fact an insult to the legacy of slavery that WE suffered (we don't have black people in most of LatAm because the native population were used as slaves, thus, there was no need to import them, unlike the US where the native Americans could not withstand such conditions and also succumbed to diseases brought by the British colonists, thus necessitating both the import of African slaves and European indentured servants, which is why the US has very unique demographics compared to the rest of the Americas, LatAm needed neither African slaves nor European indentured servants [they came from places like Ireland a lot of the time], so it is disrespectful to our own histories to say that a foreign culture should represent us in any way. I do hope that African culture has somewhere to be in Teyvat, perhaps in an area like Delphi/Enkanomiya (Greek), Dragonspine (Scandinavia), or Remuria (ancient Rome), so it can have its own dedicated space, perhaps bordering some areas of Natlan or underneath it to acknowledge the overlap between places like Puerto Rico and Cuba with West Africa, because their culture is very different from continental LatAm, especially Mexico/Central America, where Natlan is primarily based. Though I would add Genshin is absolutely under zero obligation to include that, I am just saying it'd be cool if they did. It IS a work of fiction and it is THEIR work, in the end. Unless it's a decision that negatively impacts the quality of the story (i.e. Inazuma AQ censorship and Signora dying without a proper resolution, Arlecchino slop quest ruining other characters and previous lore), it is their creative liberty to do as they see fit. Dottore better be playable soon though. ❤

      It is unfortunate what they did with Arlecchino, I personally was quite hyped for her. But the SQ was large letdown. I expected more, a lot of people did. Cannot say much to Dottore or Scara as I don't really research these characters so I would presume you know much more about that seeing as you wrote such a long essay about them. About Natlan, I wanted to sound as neutral as possible, but I gotta agree with you. Majority of people who complained about it are ill twitter folks with nothing to do as they usually are poking their fingers into stuff they don't have any connection to. If I were to add some fuel to the fire for people are trying to have dark skinned characters, then I would say, that actually it was long before said that Teyvat has fake sky, thus dark color for the characters could contradict with what was established. Cannot say much else on that matter, as I lack severe knowledge in regards to history of latin america. But ngl i gotta say hats off for writing this long ass comment as it probably took you long time. I respect that!

      I would say it is because of the fear of WuWa, because this is the first time Genshin has some competition and devs could feel afraid that majority of players could switch. Although the way they did it wasn't the best, just resin isn't enough. I believe that some of the endgame features that we have seen during Fontaine is connected to their fear of WuWa. We can also look into the past and we can see that until Fontaine we have seen little additions to endgame, so it wouldn't make sense to just say "Hoyoverse finally listened to us". When it comes to Genshin, Hoyoverse doesn't really listen to players so I doubt that could be the reason for these additions. Meanwhile new competition? thats something that speaks to devs, especially since it could mean money loss for them. I believe the fear of WuWa is making Hoyoverse do some subtle but meaningful changes and might in process make Genshin much better game than it is right now. This is especially significant for players of both games because now instead of having one bellow average game they can have 2 great games.

    agree with your first point, that also my biggest problem with genshin, the main story has no main direction, main character just walking aimlessly between nations that has no important impact to the main plot. Those nations story are just bunch of sidequests but have voice actor and bunch gacha characters, they serve no purpose to mc goal, they just drop some bit of the world lore after finish each nation. some will say but mc goal is not find his sister anymore, just replay we will be reunited quest, but imo that quest not justify mc journey to 7 nations. In that quest mc sister told him just go travel 7 nations to understand true nature of teyvat or something like that without any explanation and mc is like: "oh oke, i desperate want to find you but i gonna do what you asked and you go your way, i go mine after we accidentally met each other lol." But after that in each nations the first thing mc care and asked always where is his sister, who is the godness that seperate them. He never show any actual care to explore the secret of teyvat, his sister is always his first priority, but 4 nations by far has no abyss order involved, unknown god still asleep even after hydro throne destroyed, they are just nations own problem, why waste time to write those archon quest and labeled them as main quest if they are not push the story forward. Not to mention between each "explore teyvat quest" we again meet dain and with him we follow mc sister trace and uncover abyss order plan, these dain quests made nation archon quest even more irrelevance and so contradict with "uncover the truth of teyvat" goal. Imo dain quests are only where the main story actual happen, but some how we still have mc POV in those nation archon quest at the same timeline with dain quest make me think mc is some pepega dude who doesn't even know what his actual goal is. Genshin story remind me of witcher 3 story, that also the story of finding mc daughter in big open world, but in witcher 3 each regions arcs are actual direct involved in finding daughter plot, and they help the mc goal progess, uncover truth of the world and what is the sceret behind always the result of that journey, whereas in genshin nation quest more like for hyv selling more character, so in result we have 5 years with tons of archon quests but the main story no where near its first major plot point, just the same thing happen again and again. Although recent nation quests is better in writting but like i said they have so little impact to main story. Hope things change in natlan, based on recent story leaks its seem they plan to have big change compare to previous nations.

    I agree with a lot of your points (except about Xiao), but I think this is Genshin problem for trying to treat all the playable characters like main characters and Traveler is only an observer of their story I agree very much that the story Traveler witness should give more clearer hints why it is relevant to his journey, because IT IS relevant but Genshin always hide lore, making the importance of an event questionable, only truly observant people and who read all Genshin hidden lore in quest and book can understand the meaning behind it Like Mondstadt story actually reveals a bit about archon and dragons and catalysm, Zhongli story highlights bits about archon war, Inazuma is about what vision is actually is and what effect it has to a person, but all of that are nor clear because of bad storytelling and lore hiding starting Sumeru is start to get more clearer but not clear enough, Sumeru is about Teyvat Irminsul world system, Fontaine is also more about Teyvat system, Celestia, primordial water, outlander Then story quest and hangout quest are just their way to sell characters, this is a gacha game after all, waifu husbando fanservice, having fun with friends/character you like, it is made to show Traveler more about who is that character and if possible add some fanservice so they will pull for them

    We have less cutscene but on the other side I think the visual qualities of the cutscene improved. True that there's too much infodump and confusing dialogues, and things weirdly too straightforward. Genshin doesn't know what show don't tell mean. (As a French it's a bit our fault because we're known for talking too much and Fontaine really, really use that.) I have the feeling most of the story is supposed to unravel past snow country I can't type the name. Like once we reach it we got more substantial content. But it take its time. And that makes everything feels weird and slow-paced. I think it's also what's holding character from developing, it's probably all in pause for The Moment. The characters from the later nations seems more developed in general as helll. Mondstadt is being held back as hell. (We're all waiting its expansion and Venti second quest and Varka to come back with the milk someday.) I think a lot of characters could have interesting interactions but never have them and that ties to a lot of your points, like the lack of purpose or consequences in the quests. (I want to see Wanderer reveal the truth to Kazuha while provoking him to start a fight. Stuff like that. Come on.) We are told about some ties between a few characters or we can see parallels between them but they are never developed. Or will maybe be someday in a temporary event. Last thing I noticed character wise is that Traveler's mood followed the community's one. In Mondstadt and Liyue she was sort of a kind blank state helping people while looking for her brother. Then people start complaining about the lack of information about her brother, and from then Traveler clammed up and got really upset and refused to help people for free and stuff. Then after Inazuma I think a wave of new people came into the game and Traveler sort of reverted to their old self but only half. Traveler and Paimon in general aren't really consistent and that fits with the time bubble problem and lack of development. I disagree with the character's death because death doesn't necessarily means more depth into things. In the current state of things killing any characters would seem pretty plain. Like Signora's death was in some way (and I wanted her dead for personal reasons, but. Still) And that's already a lot

    • @lorgorr
      @lorgorr 23 дня назад

      I believe that death in story can fuel further development, because of certain deaths in the story, the characters may grow and not stay stagnant. If Signora wasn't killed by Raiden Shogun, Raiden would feel much less threatening. For other characters it depends. I like using anime as example, because in many cases you can see how one simple death can start something more than just removing character out of the play.

    • @nocturne_interlude
      @nocturne_interlude 23 дня назад

      @@lorgorr Sure, but it also cuts all potential developpement for the dead character. As much as I don't miss Signora I feel like they could have done more with her. Getting her just wiped out like that isn't even truly satisfying. Like yes, Ei killed her in one shot, but the fact that Ei could do that was already established anyway, with Kazuha's backstory. Showing it has its impact, sure but... I don't know, I just think it could have been handled better. (like most stuff in Inazuma's quest anyway) And sometimes I think the character should be allowed to just retreat in the background and live peacefully. I'm thinking of Xiao here. I've seen it said often, but the point of his character arc is to learn how to live and accept loss and to care of yourself. So doing nothing special in the beackground and learning to open up a little and just enjoy life is what Xiao deserves, even if it doesn't have much narrative impact. Also someone pointed out that the boy is carrying all the evil spirit cleaning of Liyue so if he dies the nation is screwed) That aside sure, they could kill some characters at some point. It's not a necessity to me but it could work. But doing it before they're all outide of their time bubble would feel like a waste to me.

    ill admit that i'm still doing fontaine's quest rn so i may have a bit of a misconception but i feel like a lot of the quests revolve around npcs. i just got into star rail and i already enjoy the storytelling a lot more because there's virtually no npcs in those quests (atleast not majorly) and the characters actually have some development, whereas in genshin it feels like we're just being dragged along to do random things and no one really changes. the lack of development definitely adds to the feeling of there being no consequences too, since it doesn't make sense that these characters go through such life changing events but don't actually change lmao. i also think paimon is one of the biggest issues with genshin quests. she was helpful in the beginning of the game when the traveller didn't know anything but now that we have experience with the world she just retells everything the characters said as if we don't have brains to comprehend it. i genuinely think the story would be so much better simply by removing her (or just having her shut up sometimes). overall there's a lot of good ideas in the genshin story but the execution is just bad. it's a shame because i do like this game a lot and have been playing since 1.2, and i hate to see it fall short when it has the potential to be great. i'm glad someone mentioned this stuff cause the storytelling is honestly one of my biggest issues with genshin

    I agreed with all of your points, I've been feeling like the Genshin writing is getting worse. My biggest pet peeve is Paimon narrating what you can clearly see on the screen, or characters listing off their character traits, instead of the quests taking their time to show us the character's traits. It really feels at some points like the dialogue is treating the player as if they are dumb and can't see what's in front of them. It's something that's bothered me for a long time and I don't see anyone else talking about it. Your video totally summarizes the current state of Genshin's writing, the low stakes and aimless wandering from place to place with a goal that is constantly forgotten about and pushed to the side is the writing in a nutshell. I especially liked when you touched on the characters not getting any development and being stuck in a time capsule, it's like one of those TV shows that goes out of their way to maintain the status quo without any real changes to the world. I think a lot of these story flaws are tied to the gacha system and the monetization of the game, which is really sad because it works exceptionally well. Great video, well put, liked all of your points. By the way, no offense, your accent is quite thick and I had to rewind a few bits to understand your words, maybe some subtitles at the bottom would help? I love Genshins story but after taking a break to read Umineko and returning to Genshin I just can't help but feel disappointed. I know the story can be better, and I really want it to, but it just seems like the most interesting stuff is the lore and the actual presentation is just, well, kinda shallow. In my opinion, Genshin needs a more cohesive theme. I know that the overall theme is probably revolves around dreams (I mean come on visions, it's pretty obvious) but it just feels like that doesn't come through in the quests. They also need to take more risks and stop trying to play safe all the time. And like, sorry to repeat what everyone says but, I feel like Paimon could talk a little bit less. I'm not a Paimon hater but I have to say she makes the pacing drag soooooooo much. Also they need to do something about their villains. I barely care about the abyss order outside of our sibling and the Fatui could be so much more. Also what's going on with Celestia? At this point we're more than halfway through the story and we still don't have an idea of what we are trying to do besides travel to each nation and solve their issues. We need a more focused goal than find our sibling. Also maybe some character growth for the traveler and paimon. IDK the reason I bothered to waste my time to write this paragraph was because I care about the story and I want to see it become better. At this point though, I'm don't have the time to spend on something that seems like it only ends up disappointing me. (Plus I just read Umineko and now I'm spoiled).

  • @SwanPrncss

    I think it's much more harder to write a good story without killing off characters. A lot of stories in normal books these days (not even anime) have the killing off of characters to get you emotionally invested - heck even in HSR tried that with Tingyun and Firefly. Imo, it's a very cheap trick to make you feel emotional about them, but it should only be used well if you're extremely attached to the chars. Not a lot of people care for Xiao besides the Xiao fans, so his death would be a waste even if they did implement it. Plus, the whole purpose of his character is to live a good life in place of his dead fellow yakshas - that's literally his banner title: Invitation to Mundane Life. The whole chasm story was basically "you need to get over it about sacrificing yourself and learn to be optimistic and live a good life" instead of being emo all the time - that was his character development. So if it's not Xiao, then what would be an actual character's death that would resonate emotionally and very strongly with the audience? Easy. Klee. If Klee dies (since you spent so many good memories with her and she had a lot of screentime especially summer events, and that she's a cute kid) THEN that would work on an emotional level - but you and I know that would never happen. The purpose of the story isn't lost with exploring every nation. It was CORRECTED in the "We Will Be Reunited" quest when the sibling told the traveler to finish his journey to see for himself about the true nature of this world. So it gives you a purpose to be exploring not just the nation's cities, but going to Dragonspine, Enkanomiya, Tsurumi Island, etc. It gives you REASON to go explore every nook and cranny of the world because that's your new purpose. However, it has flaws, and let me present you an actual example where it actually detracted from the story. It was during the Fontaine archon quests when we were sent to the Foretress of Meropide to find clues about Childe. We had no stakes to go to jail to save Childe, but the game makes it like we are friends with Childe when it insinuated this whole time we are more like acquaintances. We risking our health and lives for Childe is out of character because THAT is LOST PURPOSE. It (1) doesn't bring us to discovering the nature of this world, and (2) doesn't help us find our sister. It's not like the reward was talking with Furina since the traveler wanted to talk to each archon because Neuv didn't offer that as a reward. Neuv offered us compensation "highest according to law", but most people think it's just mora. I thought it was extremely out of character for the traveler to go into the foretress of meropide to help in a political struggle since he wasn't offered anything that aligned to their purpose.

      @@silverhawkscape2677 That's the point. Why does traveler even care? It has nothing to do with him or his goals. He's not responsible for childe's wellbeing; traveler is not his parent or works for the fatui. I think the funniest part of that jail arc in the Fontaine storyline is that they found out Childe is somewhere in the primordial sea, annnnd....nobody cares what happens to him afterwards. It's not consistent at all from a plot writing perspective. First, the traveler calls Childe their friend in one of their lines and that's why they're going to the foretress of meropide to find out what happened to him. Yes, canonically the traveler now thinks Childe is a friend is already weird. And next nobody gives af bout him floating somewhere in the primordial sea like that was just glossed over. If your friend is floating out in the middle of the ocean, you would think "hey! Lets get an emergency rescue plan to help him!". If Childe is now canonically a friend to the traveler, then it's inconsistent writing that the traveler didn't bring up wanting to rescue Childe after finding out he's in the sea or even asking what happened to him to Skirk after she threw him into a portal. Remember, traveler doesn't want to have anything to do with the fatui. Do you know how many times Paimon goes in the game "Ugh! Not the fatui again!". They don't want to be involved; traveler just wants to discover the truth of the world and find their sibling. For once, the traveler could CHOOSE to not be involved when Neuv asked traveler to go to jail to find out what happened to Childe. And yet they wrote it that traveler CHOOSES to go to jail for Childe is weird considering that Childe is NOT on your side, works in an organization that hates you, and has tried to kill you before.

You can sympathize with people, but it's unrealistic to go to jail for many of them unless they did something life-changing for you that you feel indebted or appreciative of. Anyway, I see it out of character in writing that part of the fontaine archon quests because the traveler at one point cared enough to go to jail for Childe, but then didn't bother doing anything after learning Childe was in the primordial sea. It feels inconsistent to me. Honestly, this could be easily fixed as easily as just having Neuvillette say that part of the reward is being able to talk to Furina in private and letting traveler ask questions - that would align with the traveler's goals and motivations, and I could then be more convinced the traveler is willing to go so far as going to jail for that opportunity.

    After reading "The lord of the rings" written by Tolkien I realized how much the movie trilogy put action scenes at the centre of the storytelling, while in the book most action happens but is not the focus of the story. The story of "The lord of the rings" shows every single detail about the setting of Arda, even those that are not relevant to the story, especially those that are not relevant to the story. Starting from this I would say that Genshin impact story have many things in common with it. When a character starts to talk about his everyday life people most of the times don't care about it, but that is what makes the difference. If a character only appear because the story requires him to be there, it's not a character, it's a plot device. Focusing on the everyday aspect of a character creates a type of depht that makes a character feel "alive". They are people, they have a life, a job, some hobbies, some skills and some flaws. I dislike when a character is part of the story but doesn't have anything outside of being strong in combat, or being so focused on his objective that you don't even know where he sleeps during the night. I prefer characters that are part of the world instead of character that are there only to fulfill their main objective (which is, for some reasons, always related to the main plot). The reason why many people don't like this type of storytelling is because they are used to stories with only action and character development that happen because of a major flaw in the character itself. But when the story uses a realistic approach to the storytelling, people don't like it, because fantasy should be different from reality and the main characters should always appear only when the plot needs them, but that is a mistake. That's also one of the reasons why i like Genshin impact story more than many other stories (like Penacony), it's different from the cliches that is the type of storytelling the audience is used to read and watch and play.

      @@lorgorr Glad you liked it, but I would like to point out that my explanation doesn't invalidate some of the points that you explained in the vid. For example the stories tied to old events that people can't play anymore is just bad and they need to fix it (I don't know how but they should) The archon quest related to the traveler being once in the entire year is also not that great, because while it builds some hype for the next chapter it makes it difficult to follow the story overall. Another point that I think is completely valid is the consequences of what is happening in the story, which most of the time feels like are not relevant. But to this I would say that everything that happened in the story up until now that seem to not have consequences is because it will be used later on. Genshin impact story is far from finished (it will move on for atleast another 2 years) so they have both time and build up for the final chapters of the story, which I expect to complete what they started. I think this is the reason why the story feels without consequences for the characters, because is not over and they are still building up to something else (maybe some major plot at the end, after the traveler finished exploring all 7 nations)

    I'm not sure killing off characters like Xiao and Freminet are exactly great. It may be okay for the development for others, but it would be a unexpected and unnecessary end to their own stories and possible future development. Xiao was a character who was willing to sacrifice himself but Zhongli saving him showed that it didn't need to happen and he could continue living. etc.

    • @lorgorr
      @lorgorr 25 дней назад

      Freminet i agree could be harmful in the longterm, but Xiao i dont think so. Xiaos arc in chasm felt like it is completed, like it had everything it needed. Even now Xiao is doing literally nothing, he is just existing. Imagine if we had in Latern rite one small quest where we would honor his sacrifice that others could live. It would be just selfless sacrifice that could say, that the characters are mortal and not those super heroes as they seem at the moment

      @@lorgorrIt would break the whole poont of his character. To live. You think he has nothing to do but honestly. Its clear his goal now is just to live. To live a good life. Xiao has officially entered his retirement let the guy enjoy it.

    • @lorgorr
      @lorgorr 24 дня назад

      Thats fair, i considered him just as a character not as living breathing person, that was mostly reason why i thought that his death could be good for surrounding characters

      @@lorgorr You don't understand Xiao's character. All his character arc is about appreciating normal life, his story is not complete yet, that's why his banner is "Invitation to Mundane Life", he's a person with PTSD from war and can't adapt to peaceful life and keeps coming back to a never ending war But this is also flaw in Genshin's storytelling, because a lot of his development hidden behind limited time events. After the chasm quest he starts trying normal daily people things, he starts to interact more with other people, starts trying poetry, and at the last Lantern Rite it's the first time he's trying to participate by his own volition, his development mostly hidden in events like this

      Now I understand his character at least more than before. I never really dabbled into Xiao as to me he didn't appear interesting. I just viewed him as, "oh damn he could have died, that could help characters grow", but i never considered true purpose behind his saving. Which now I know is to have him retire and enjoy life in its beauty, without worries of having to deal with constant threats. Thank you, I really appreciate it for letting me know that.

    The lore in the game is interesting, and I mean Very interesting. However the storytelling really is trash. I don't pay any attention to the world quests because they aren't voiced, the story quests revolve around NPCs in need of help from the character and the archon quests feel very slow.

    • @AF_frfr
      @AF_frfr 24 дня назад

      I personally hate how there is so much interesting lore in the game, but the developers never actually do anything with it and never actually involve the deeper lore in the major story, but instead lock it all behind walls of text and side quests

    I love how alhaitham's team got SUPER buffed(alhaitham+kuki+nahida+furina). I pulled for him on his release and his hyperbloom team with yelan was already quite OP and now he's more OP and he can run MH set for even more damage. Hoping the pyro archon buffs tartaglia as well. Love him sm

    I hate that we only get one Dainsleif quest a year. They are so far apart from one another that by the time the next Dain quest comes around I'll have already forgotten what happened in the last one.

    Nice video i don't have any major gripes with anything you said and i would agree most units fall off eventually but characters like nilou that are the only major thing for an extremely good niche won't be going anywhere

    • @lorgorr
      @lorgorr Месяц назад

      Thank you, I appreciate it It probably depends mostly on how the abyss fits that archetype. If it would fit well bloom then yep Nilou will shine again. There might be return of her teams soon, since its been quite some time since Nilou was available to us. I would also guess that more endgame will now be focused on Burgeon and Burning because of Emillie and in Natlan, Kinich.

    • @trollar8810
      @trollar8810 Месяц назад

      The thing is, a lot of niches have kinda disappeared tho, people dont really play Taser nearly as often as they used to(and even then it's popularity was about 1 region long), physical and mono geo teams are practically dead, people barely play teams that use Raiden as a battery anymore, etc.

    • @Evitzeoshowerthoughts
      @Evitzeoshowerthoughts 27 дней назад

      @@trollar88101) good niches... 2) we're counting physical and Taser as niches? They're archetypes. it's like saying xingqiu nahida kuki hyperbloom is a niche. Either way terminology aside. Taser was never good. It was only "good" because fischl needed a reaction to trigger her passive. I can see in the future that taser will become a burning. Meaning you use it as a catalyst for other reactions, it's already used as a double swirl helper in raiden yelan furina Jean. And overvape where pyro dps vape and overload at the same time. Hek a shatter superconduct team is possible too, just need to the right character. Mono geo was never good really, it's just a raw damage check. Nilou bloom will consistently get better just from em and Nilou's hp, Mono geo is capped at itto's level. Of course just a teamwide healer to use furina will save mono geo. Physical is just white geo. As for raiden, her energy is still good, but tbh who used raiden as a battery....... Even back on her first release nobody actually wanted her er. Xiangling was 1 but only for casuals since just Bennett has always been fine. Eula is physical. Yae was 1 but only because she didn't have good teams and once dendro came, she can on-field more often to use basic attacks and get energy that way. The modern version is furina yelan Jean. All energy hungry and love raiden. Otherwise, eh. Mihoyoverse hasn't released any energy hungry sub dps to actually want raiden.

    I would like to see more characters there, or at least some regular rotations. I was about thinking to level up my Qiqi, but level 90 is very resource demanding, so why should I do it, when I don't use her at all? To have some nice sparkles behind her which I even will not enjoy when I don't use her 😂

    Sounds boring to me. The effect is minor. Not sure why they choose to just drip feed these things either. I would have much preferred skins, but at this rate, how will they even manage to make skins for every character within 3 years time?

  • @lorgorr
    @lorgorr Месяц назад

    I was talking about it rotating, but it wasn't exactly true as we dont know it yet, so might have just these 5 characters and more will be added later on. But its not 100% confirmed how it will be in the future.
